SWEDEN VS. RUSSIA PREVIEWSweden enters its matchup with Russia after winning its first game of the tournament on Friday, 4-1, over Czech Republic.

Team Sweden has lost both of its previous matches to USA and Finland by 5-1 and 5-3, respectively.

In their win over Czech Republic Friday, goals were scored by Jonatan Berggren, Nils Lundkvist, Linus Nassen and Samuel Fagemo. Goaltender Jesper Eliasson recorded 15 saves for the win.

Thirteen seconds into the second period, Svechnikov shot the puck on the backhand top-shelf on a breakaway to give Russia a 3-0 lead.

K’Andre Miller scored shorthanded from the point for Team USA at the 19:00 mark of the second period to make it 3-1. Miller fired a quick wrist shot into the net after a face-off win from Trevor Janicke.

Fifty-four seconds into the third period, Jack Hughes scored off a pass from Miller to put Team USA within one of Russia. Wahlstrom also assisted on the goal.

Danila Galenuk scored off a deflection in front at 10:24 in the third to give Russia a 4-2 lead. Daniil Zhuravlev and Svechnikov tallied assists on the goal.

Joel Farabee scored at 11:04 of the third to make it 4-3. Hughes stickhandled around the defender in front and passed to Farabee who shot the puck past the Amir Miftakhof’s stick. Wahlstrom also assisted on the goal.

Wahlstrom scored a goal at 13:13 of the third to tie the game, 4-4. Hughes picked up his third point of the night with the assist on the goal.

At 18:34 of the third, Tyler Weiss scored for Team USA to give the U.S. its first lead, 5-4. Jake Wise assisted on the goal.

Drew DeRidder made 15 saves, including a Russian penalty shot during the third period. Miftakhof recorded 38 for the night.

SWEDEN VS. CZECH REPUBLIC REWINDSweden opened scoring at 7:57 of the first period when Jonatan Berggren backhanded the puck past the Czech goaltender, Lukas Dostal.

Michal Kvasnica sent the puck in from the left circle to tie the game, 1-1 for the Czech Republic at 8:21 of the first period.

Nils Lundkvist put home a rebound and

gave Sweden a 2-1 lead at 6:15 of the second period.

Linus Nässén extended the Sweden lead to 3-1 at the 11:28 mark of the third period off a cross-ice pass from Marcus Westfält.

Samuel Fagemo scored the final Sweden goal in the last two minutes of play to bring the score to 4-1.

Sweden goaltender Jesper Eliasson made 15 saves to pick up his first win of the tournament while Czech goaltender Lukas Dostal tallied 39 saves.

Sweden will face Russia Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET at USA Hockey Arena.

TOURNAMENT REWINDFinland defeated the Czech Republic, 3-2 in the opening game of the 2018 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament at USA Hockey Arena.

Jesse Moilanen scored the eventual game winner for Finland at the 14:01 of the second period. After a series of passes from Niklas Nordgren, Moilanen sent the puck in over the glove of the Czech Republic’s Lukáš Dostál.

The Czech Republic pulled within one at 5:45 of the third period but eventually fell short. Adam Gajarsky netted the Czech Republic's second goal on the power play, on a shot from the point.

Dostál finished the game with 23 saves for the Czech Republic while Finland’s Justus Annunen finished the game with 22 saves.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated Sweden, 5-1 in its opening game of the Under-18 Five Nations Tournament at USA Hockey Arena behind three point nights from Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.), Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) and Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.).

saves in the win while Sweden’s Jesper Eliasson recorded 28 saves.

In the third game of the tournament, Russia claimed its first victory with a 4-0 shutout of Finland on Wednesday afternoon. Russian goaltender Amir Miftakhof made 28 saves to earn the tournament’s first shutout performance while Vasili Podkolzin Ruslan Iskhakov, Andrei Svechnikov and Ivan Morozov scored in the win.

The Czech Republic earned a 6-2 victory against Team USA in the tournament's fourth game. Matej Blumel netted four goals for the Czech Republic and goaltender Daniel Dvorak made 44 saves to propel the Czech Republic past Team USA. Joel Farabee and Erik Middendorf scored the Team USA goals.

In Thursday’s matinee game, Russia defeated the Czech Republic, 9-2. Andrei Svechnikov and Grigory Denisenko had two goals a piece in the win.

Finland beat Sweden on Thursday night, 5-3. Jesperi Kotkaniemi led the way for Finland with a four-point showing with two goals and two assists.

TOURNAMENT DETAILSEach team will compete in four games, with points awarded for wins (3), overtime wins (2) and overtime losses (1). The first-place team will be determined based on final point standings.

TOP NHL-ELIGIBLE TALENT Of the 112 players in the tournament, 72 are rated by NHL's Central Scouting Bureau for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.Thirty-one players in the tournament are rated in the Top 40 of the North American or International skaters.

Team USA has the most players on the Central Scouting list with 18.

U18 FIVE NATIONS HISTORYThe Under-18 Five Nations and Four Nations tournaments are held twice a season. The U.S. has placed first in at least one of the two yearly events dating back to the 2007-08 season. In total, the U.S. has won the event 19 times since the U.S. began participating in 1997-1998.

The U.S. has won both of the yearly tournaments five times (2003-04, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2016-17).

NOVEMBER'S FIVE NATIONSIn the November U18 Five Nations

tournament in Finland, the U18s went 1-0-2-1 (W-OTW-OTL, L) in the tournament to tie the Czech Republic for third place. Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) led Team USA in the tournament with three points (1-2-3) in their three games.

LAST YEAR...Last year, the U.S. National Under-18 Team won both Under-18 Five Nations tournaments.

In November 2016, the U.S. (1999 birth year) earned victories against Switzerland (7-2), the Czech Republic (5-3) and Finland (3-2) and fell to Sweden (2-1) to earn nine points, two more than any other team in the tournament to finish first.

The U.S. clinched first place in the final game of the tournament against Finland where Scott Reedy (2015-17/University of Minnesota) scored the game-winner at the 6:16 mark of the third period and St. Cyr stopped 23 shots. With that tournament victory, the U.S. National Under-18 Team has won nine of the last ten international events held each November.

USA HOCKEY ARENA NOTESABOUT USA HOCKEY ARENABuilt in 1996 by Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, Jr. and purchased in March of 2015 by The USA Hockey Foundation, USA Hockey Arena is the home for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

Located in Plymouth, Michigan (20 miles west of Detroit and 15 miles east of Ann Arbor, Michigan), USA Hockey Arena encompasses close to 190,000 square feet with two ice surfaces. The main arena seats 3,400 (4,000 for standing room) and is a regulation National Hockey League ice surface (85 X 200). Four private suites are available with media facilities to accommodate live television broadcasts.

The second rink seats 900 with an Olympic-sized ice surface (100 X 200).

LEARN TO PLAY AND LEARN TO SKATE OFFERED AT USA HOCKEY ARENAThe Learn to Skate (LTS) and Learn to Play Hockey (LTP) programs at USA Hockey Arena follows specialized curriculum that offers something for everyone. LTS offers a progressive system that, upon completion of the program, allows skaters to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.

Registration for both programs are available at USAHockeyArena.com.

USA HOCKEY ARENA TO HOST 15 NATIONALS USA Hockey Arena will serve as host for the 2018 USA Hockey Youth Tier I National Championship Tournament for 15-year-olds. The tournament will

run from April 5-10, 2018, bringing the nation’s top youth players to the home of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.

In all, 16 teams representing each USA Hockey district will skate in the national championship tournament for 15-year-olds. The first three days will include 24 round-robin games. The top two teams from each of the four divisions will advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played Sunday, April 8. Semifinal games will be played Monday, April 9, and the championship game will be held Tuesday, April 10.

Qualifying teams and a specific game schedule will be announced at a later date. More information can be found at nationals.usahockey.com.

The 2016-17 U.S. National Under-18 Team followed November's performance by claiming its second international tournament victory of the season by earning 11 points and posting a 3-1-0-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) record in Sundsvall, Sweden in February 2017.

In the deciding game against tournament-host Sweden, Josh Norris (2015-17/University of Michigan) scored a short-handed goal with three seconds remaining in regulation and then tallied two shootout goals in a 5-4 victory at Sundsvall Energi Arena. St. Cyr tallied 25 saves in the game.

ABOUT THE NTDPThe pinnacle of amateur player development in the U.S., the NTDP scouts and selects the top 22 players in two age groups (Under-17 and Under-18) to train and develop in a highly competitive two-year program.

The teams (Under-17 and Under-18) face a rigorous domestic schedule including competition against older, more developed players. The U17s play a majority of a 60- game junior schedule in the USHL, while the U18s face USHL, NCAA Division I and III opponents. Both squads also compete in several international events each season.

Additionally, the players face a daily routine of off-ice development that includes strength training, cross-training, cognitive skill testing and academics.

COACHING STAFF AT U18 5 NATIONSSeth Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.) will lead the U.S. in the event for the second time this season. Joining Appert behind the bench will be associate coach Nick Fohr (Grand Forks, N.D.) and intern assistant coach Mason Graddock (Stowe, Vt.).

TEAM USA CAPTAINS: Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) will serve as team captain for the duration of the Five Nations Tournament. Partick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) will serve as alternate captains.

UNDER-17 TEAM FIVE NATIONS RECAP: The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated tournament-host, Finland Saturday morning, 3-1. The team closes out its international schedule tomorrow (Feb. 18) at 10 a.m. ET against the Czech Republic.

The U17s defeated Sweden Friday (Feb. 16) morning, 10-2. After falling behind 2-0 after the first period, the U17s scored 10 unanswered goals. Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) netted four goals in the win.

The U17s are currently 13-0-0 (W-L-T) in international play.

NTDP AT THE OLYMPICS: The U.S. fell in its third game of the Olympics Saturday morning to the Olympic Athletes from Russia, 4-0.

The U.S. defeated Slovakia, 2-0 Thursday night (Feb. 15) in its second game of the Games.

They fell to Slovenia Wednesday morning (Feb. 14) in overtime, 3-2 in Gangneugn, South Korea as it opened Olympic play. Alum Jordan Greenway (2013-15/Boston University) netted a goal for Team USA in the loss.

Five NTDP alumni were named to the U.S. Men’s Olympic roster: Troy Terry (2014-15/University of Denver), Chad Kolarik (2002-04/Adler Mannheim), Ryan Stoa (2003-05/Spartak Moskva) and Brandon Maxwell (2007-09/BK Mlada Boleslav).

NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING MID-SEASON RANKINGS: Seventeen current Under-18 Team players and eight former NTDP players were named on the NHL Central Scouting’s Mid-Season Rankings for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Topping the list are alumni Brady Tkachuk (2015-17/ Boston University) and Quinn Hughes (2015-17/University of Michigan) at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) is the highest rated current skater for the NTDP at No. 7. He is followed by: Joel

Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) at No. 11, Mattias Samuelsson (Vorhees, N.J.) at No. 17 and Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, M.D.) at No. 19.
