IamjoinedwiththeAreaBishopsinbringingyougreetingsandassuranceofourprayersasyougather intheannualVestryMeetingtosetparishprioritiesandbudgetandchoosechurchwardensandofficerstoleadyourministrytogether.IamsogratefulforthecommitmentandcontributionsthatthesepeoplemaketothelifeoftheChurchandthemissionofChristinthecommunityyouserve.Thankyou,especially,tothosewhoarefinishing their termsofofficeormoving intodifferent responsibilities.Myprayersareofferedforthoseofyouwhoaretakingonnewministriestoday.
Today,ashasbeenthecustomforseveralyears,IaskyoutoconsideraVestrymotionadvocatingforaffordablehousinganddealingwithhomelessness.We,asachurch,havealongandeffectivehistoryofprovidingbothtemporaryandemergencyhousing,
longtermhousingprojectsandcounsellingandsupportfortheunderhoused.Theseprogramsarevitalforprovidingreliefonaday-to-daybasisformanywhodonothaveaccesstoaffordablehousing.However,anyefforttoaddressthelong-termneedsunderlyingthiscrisisrequiresmoreresourcesthanchurchesandcommunityagenciescanprovidealone.Thechurchhasanadvocacyroleaswellasprovidingfront-lineservice.Thetwogotogether;bothmakeadifference.Whateveryoudecidetodotoday,Ithinkitisimportantthatwediscussinourmeetingstoconductthe“business”ofourparishes,theissuesthataffectthewell-beingofourwholecommunity.
Akeypriorityinourdiocesanstrategicplan,GrowinginChrist,isleadershipdevelopmentandformation.InmyChargetoSynod,Iaskedeveryparishtoparticipateinatleastoneintentionalformationprogrammeduringtheyear.MayIinviteyoutojoinmethisLentinMeetingJesusintheGospelofJohn.Resourcesareavailableon-lineandcanbeusedbyindividualsandgroups.Icommendseveralotherprogrammes—somedevelopedintheDiocese—thatwillhelpyoutobemoreintentionalandconfidentinyourChristiandiscipleship.Suggestionswillbealsoavailableon-line.
Iwillretireattheendofthisyear.Ithasbeenanincrediblehonourtohaveservedforsomefifteenyearsasyourbishopandoverfortyyearsinordainedministryinthisdiocese.Whatajoyithasbeentobeinvitedintopeople’slivesatthemostprofoundlevel—atmomentsofdeepjoyorsorrow,attimesofvocationaldiscernment,attimesofchallengingcrisisorproductivestability.Inallthis,towitnessthefaithandcompassionandengagementofAnglicanshasstrengthenedmyfaith,expandedmyhorizonsandconfirmedmyloveofChristandhisChurch.ThisJune,Synodwillchooseacoadjutorbishopwhowillautomaticallysucceedmeonmyretirement,becomingthe12thBishopofToronto.IposedsomequestionsatSynodforpeopletoconsiderinpreparationfortheelection:
• Fromyourownexperienceofbishop(s),whataretwoqualitiesyouhaveadmiredinabishop?• WhataretwocriticalissuesaffectingthelifeandmissionofthisDiocesetoday?• Consideringthat,whattwoqualities(maybethesameordifferentfrom#1)doesthenextbishopneedtohave
toleadthisDioceseinitsmissionintothenextdecade?
PleaseprayforthemembersofSynodthattheymaydiscernwiselyandfaithfullyforthischallengingandcomplexroleofleadingthelargestandmostdiversedioceseinNorthAmerica.

A ChApter Comes to A CloseWhenyoufinishreadingachapterofafavouritenovel,itisgoodtopauseandabsorballthatyouhaveread.Witheachturnofthepage,theplotthickens,thecharacterschange,theemotionsdeepenasdoesthesuspenseandanticipationforwhatistocome.Comingtothecloseof2017islikefinishingachapterofabeloved,wellwornpaperbackthatsitsonthebedsidetable.Thekindofbookyoucan’tquiteputdown.
In2017,wecelebratedtheministryofTheRev’dCanonDavidBrintonwhoservedasVicarandSub-Deanfor17years.Heleftanindeliblemarkofcompassion,care,andfaithonsomanyofus. ItwasfittingthatwenamedtheVestry inhishonour.OurOutreachandChildren’sCoordinator,BrianRaneyandourassistantPropertyManag-er,FrankCormierdepartedSt.Jamestotakeupnewopportunitiesafterservingourcommunitysofaithfully.WealsobadefarewelltoDavidBriggsourartist-in-residencewhonowservesatSt.JohntheDivineinNewYorkCity.WearedelightedthatDavidwillbebacktoplaythreeconcerts,threeSundaysandthreeTuesdayrecitalsin2018.
A ChApter beginsWhiletherewereendingstherehavealsobeennewbeginnings.WewelcomedourVicar,TheRev’dLouisePeters;AndrewKuhl,ourChildrenandYouthCoordinator;NathanMcNeil,aSiteEventsCoordinator(contract—maternityleave),KathyBiasi,ourOutreachCoordinator;JimKotsifas,ourPropertyManager;ManuelPiazzaourOrganScholar;Jessie-AnnBaines,ourCommunicationsManager;andJenniferWang,ourBookkeeper.Somanychanges.Andyeteachofthemisbringingtheirrichexperience,passionandknowledgetobearinoursharedministryofSt.JamesCathedral.
2017wasayearofdeepeningourministry.OurDrop-Inprogramcontinuedtoofferaplaceofrefugeandsustenanceforalmost200peopleeveryTuesday,andtheFaith+Hubcalledus togodeeperwithourstreet involvedcommunity.OurChristianEducationlecturesinvitedustodialogueonmultifaithissues,learnaboutJohnStrachan,theReformation,nucleardisarmamentandmore.TheTruthandReconciliationeventsinvitedustowalkwithourIndigenousbrothersandsisters.Cathedral101,Anglican101,andMission101invitedvisitorstosettleandbecomemembers.OurMusicprograminspiredoursoulstotakeflight.TheHealthCounciltrainedlaypastoralvisitors,conductedagriefgroupandaretirementvisioningevent.OurRentalsdepartmentinvitedlocalbusinessesandnot-for-profitorganizationstomeetunderourroof.TheYorkGroupgatheredeachmonthtolistentospeakersandsupporttheCathedralMinistry.TheBellringershostedtheNorthAmericanGuildofChangeRingers’annualgeneralmeeting.Thelistofministryinitiativesgoesonandonandon.Behindeacheventwasadedicatedgroupoflayleaders,communitymembers,clergyandstaffmakingitallhappen.AndeachministryimbuedwithGod’slove,compassionandmercy.
IammovedbyallthatweofferanddotoshowtheLightofChristintheheartofthecityandintheDioceseofToronto.Iamgratefulforourclergy,staffandlayleaderswhoweekbyweektendtotheministrythatchangeslives.Iamespeciallythankful for thededicationofourwardensBobHart,DonSolomon, JayneHobbs,andAngelaDavidwho impartedsomuch.

THECHURCHWARDENS’REPORTDearFriends,
2017continuedtobeatimeof transition.Webadefarewell toFatherDavidBrintonattheendofMay inabeautifulsend-offinwhichweexpressedourheartfeltappreciationforhisministry.Asmuchaswemisshim,hisretirementisrichlydeserved.Wearegratefultoourpastoralassociatesandourassistantcurate,TheRev’dLeighKern,forsteppingintoassistDeanAsbiloverthesummer.
InAugust,wewelcomedTheRev’dLouisePeters,ournewVicar.TheformerDeanandRectorofSt.Paul’sCathedral,Kamloops,B.C.,LouisebringsgreatpersonalwarmthandanopenstyletoherministryatSt.James.Shehasbeenabsorbedingettingtoknowusandhasmadeanenergeticstarttocoordinatingworshipandherotherresponsibilities.
InJanuary,manyofushadthepleasureofattendingtheordinationtothepriesthoodofTheReverendJamesLiu,assistantcuratefortheMandarinMinistry.TheintroductionofaregularSundaycelebrationoftheEucharistinMandarininthenaveisamilestoneintheintegrationofourMandarin-speakingcommunityintothelifeoftheCathedral.
TheChildren’sandYouthMinistryhasbeenentrusted toanewcoordinator,AndrewKuhl, andKathyBiasihas takenoverasOutreachProgramCoordinator.Thesenewstaffmembersareresponsibleforthedeliveryoftwoministriesthatarecentraltothe lifeofSt.James.Late intheyearwewelcomedJessie-AnnBainesasourCommunicationsManager.BothAndrew’sandJessie-Ann’srolesarefocusedoncongregationaldevelopmentasweseektoattractandnurturenewmembers,particularlyyoungfamilies,toreinvigorateparishlife.KathyhasusedhercontactstobringadditionalresourcesfromoutsidetheparishtobearonourTuesdayDrop-In.
InOctober,wecommemoratedthe500thanniversaryoftheReformationandinNovember,the150thanniversaryofthedeathofBishopStrachaninaneveningofthoughtfulreflectionsandfellowship.Weareblessedtostandontheshouldersofgiants.
Now220-yearsold,St.Jamesremainsavibrantcommunity.OverthelasttwoyearswehavebeeninvitedbyDeanAsbilto renewedstewardship to sustain theCathedralasaplaceof continuingworshipat theheartofourdioceseandofadynamic andprosperous city.We relyon four sourcesof income:offerings, investment income, rental incomeandcemeteryincome.Afterseveralyearsasasterlingperformer,theCathedralCentrecontributedlessin2017thaninthepreviousyear,asnewcompetitionenteredthemarket.Stepsarebeingtakentomakethevenuemoreattractivetorent,andforanindustryre-launch.Thecemeteryrequiresupto$1millionofearthworktostabilizearavineedge.AloanhasbeensecuredfromtheDioceseofToronto,ongenerousterms,tofinancethiswork.However,payingdowntheloanwilldivertcemeteryincome.Despitechallengesinbalancingourbudgets,maintenanceofferingsareup20percentovertwoyears,evidenceofthedepthofcommitmentofourparishioners.
TheleadershipofSt.James’sbelievesthatwecannotcutourwaytosuccess.Ournewstaffhiresareaninvestmentinthelong-termstabilizationofourbudget,andthesustainabilityofourcommunitythroughmembershiprenewal.Attendancecontinuestoedgeupward.Welookforwardtoanotheryearofbuildingourcongregationtogetherin2018.

sTRaTeGIC pLaN upDaTeintroDUCtionTheDioceseofTorontohasbeenengagedintheworkofsettingastrategicplanthatwillguidethevision,missionandministryofourDiocese.GrowinginChrist:StrategicPlan,2016-2021setsourcourseforthenextfiveyears.Theframe-workfortheplanistheresultofengagingwithstakeholders,completinganenvironmentalscan,andconductingstrategicplanningsessions.Theplanhighlightsfiveareasoffocusforministryinordertosuccessfullyliveintothevision.Thesefivefociare:LeadershipandFormation,TrustandCulture,InnovationBasedonEvidence,Governance&DecisionMaking,andStewardshipofResources.
Inthespringof2017,DeanAsbilinvitedtheCathedralCounciltoembraceasimilarprocesstodevelopathreetofiveyearstrategicplanthatwouldgivebearingsforthevision,ministryandmissionofSt.JamesCathedral.TheCouncilhasbegunthisworkwiththeassistanceofJohnWhincup,ExecutiveDirectorofOptimusSBR,aTorontobasedconsultingfirm.Opti-musSBRwasalsoengagedtocreatetheDiocesanPlan.JohnandHildaWhincuparealsomembersofSt.JamesCathedral.
Twomeetingswereheld,August23andOctober12tobegintheprocessofdevelopingtheplanwithacohortofCouncilmembers.Twoquestionswereasked;WhatdoweastheCathedralofSt.Jameswanttoberecognizedas(Vision)?Whatdoweneedtofocusoninordertomakeourvisioncometofruition?
Thememberswrotedowntheiranswersonstickynotesandplacedthemingroupingsaccordingtocommonthemes.Someofthoseresponsesandemergingpriorityareasarelistedhere.Pleasenotethattheideasrecordedarenotdefinitiveasmuchastheyareastepalongthewaytodevelopingtheplan.

Altar GuildTheAltarGuildofTheCathedralChurchofSt.Jamesisagreatgroupofmemberswhosemissionis:“Tocareful-lyandreverentlyattendtoGod’shousewithdedicationand loving attention to detail.” Members ensure thatsilverchalicesandtrays,brasscollectionplatesandcan-dlesnuffers,pewplaquesandthechancelaltarrailareallcleanandshinyeachSunday.Linensonallfouraltarsarecheckedforspillsorwaxmarks,andthesmalllinensusedateveryEucharistaretakenhomeforlaundering.
Thiswork is carried out by a group of volunteers; Vil-maSharpe,SisterBeulahPrimus,SheilaGoulet,Barba-ra Hirst,Minette vonBieberstein, Yvonne Joseph, LucyBayo, Miho Nakazawa, Rosemary Eversley, and PitraJowohtwoFridaysandtwoSaturdaysofthemonth(onfor two weeks of the six-week schedule). In addition,Vanessa Rottner andDorothyMacDonald take care ofthecemeteryaltaratSt. James-the-Lesschapel. (Theirreportfollows.)
Oursmallbuthard-workingteamsofthreetofourmem-bers faithfullymaintain thisbehind-the-scenes service.However,oneteamisdowntojustonemember,makingithardtocoverthatshift.Tothis,wearecurrentlyandconstantly in need of more volunteers; women, men,girlsandboys.
In November 2017 David Grant and Gordon RobisonjoinedtheSt.JamesCathedralAltarGuildandasofDe-cemberalsobecamepartoftheSt.James-the-Lesschapelteamcompliment.Howeverwelostonemember,DianeBradshawwhoretiredaftermanyyearsoffaithfulservice.
MembersoftheAltarGuildhelda“meet-and-greet”withthenewvicar,onNovember12,2017.Wediscussedwayforward for our guild and she sharedmany aspirationswithus. Thankyou for your supportandguidance,TheRev’dLouise;welookforwardtoworkingcloselywithyou.
Alinenauditwasrecentlyconductedtodeterminethestate/level of inventory; itwas concluded thatwe arewellpositionedforsuppliesallaround(fornow).ThankyouMinetteV,greatjob.
SpecialthankstoSheilaGouletasshestepsdownfrombe-ingchairoftheAltarGuildforsomanyyears,yourservicewasappreciatedandyouareablessing.
Wealsothankthesextonsforbeingavailable–helpingtolocatebrass,crosses,etc.whenevertheyarewronglystoredandforprovidingaccesstothevestryandvaultsweekafterweek.
SpecialmentiontotheDiocesanNeedleworkCommitteefor voluntarily offering their service to provide sewingand repairs to fair linen and any frontals’ that requiredelicatework.Thankyou.

JaMes-the-Less chaPeL ThesanctuaryoftheChapelofSt.James-the-Lesscon-tinues to be maintained, monitored and cared for atregularintervalsduring2017.WeprepareforAllSouls’,Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and funerals on anas-neededbasis.MyfunctionsunderthedirectionoftheVicararetooverseeandreportanyissuesinrelationtothe above and the following; tomaintain inventory oflinen,palls,brass,chapelsnuffers,candlesandschedul-ingduringtheyear.Thetwopallsaredry-cleanedandrepairedastheneedarisesbyDelRayCleanerslocally.Bothwere repaired in2017andwill be re-assessed infutureorastheneedsarise.
InDecemberweaddedtwonewmemberstoourteamcompliment;DavidGrantandGordonRobison.DorothyMcDonaldandIcaredforthevestrylinen,(thedustcov-er,protector, credence cloths)brass, andmaintain theinventoryofthelinenpress.Wehaveanadequatesupplyoflinenthatiscleanedandrotatedonaregularbasis.WehaveatourdisposaltheDiocesanNeedleWorkCommit-teeshouldweneedanyrepairsdoneasapprovedbytheVicar.Wealsolookafterthesanctuaryproperwithcareofthecross,candles,cleaningofthefollowersandbobe-ches(dripcatchers).Wehaveafullcomplementoflinenswhicharerotatedonaregularbasis.
WhenthereisaneedforaEucharistatthechapeltheclergyandserverstakethenecessaryelementsandpre-parefortheservice.Thevestryisadjacenttothechapelproper.TheSt.James-the-Lessservesbothasanhistor-ic chapel and crematorium, and lends itself to uniqueand interesting opportunities in the urban downtowncommunity.

InFebruary2017theActionCircleheldahave a heart Day insupportofFirstNationsChildrenandofmakingcontributionsto theireducationequal to thatofotherchildreninCanada.About100peoplesignedaValentinewith thatmessagewhichwas thensent to the federalgovernment.
Oneofourmainfocusesduringtheyearwasonjournal-ists. InMexico, forexample,morethan106 journalistshavebeenmurderedsincetheyear2000.InRussiaandEgypt,journalistswritingaboutgayrightshavebeentar-geted.Wealsohavesupportedindigenouslanddefend-ersinHondurasandGuatemalabysigningpetitionsandwritingletters.Oneofthemajorcrisesthisyearwas,ofcourse, the Rohingya. Amnesty International has beenactive inurgingMyanmartostopthecampaignofvio-lenceandhumanrightsabusesagainstthesepeople.
ThetenthanniversaryofCitiesforLife,CitiesagainsttheDeath penaltywasheldatSt. JamesonNovember24,whenTorontojoinedmorethan2000citiesfromaroundtheworldthathaveabolishedthedeathpenalty.
On December 10, the International Day of HumanRights,weheldtheannualWriteforRights event, asking peopletosign letterstoprotect individuals inJamaica,China,Madagascar,andChad;364 lettersweresigned
andmailed to governmentofficials in those countries.WeappreciatethesupportofparishionersfortheworkofAmnestyInternational.

Cemetery2017wasanexcitingyearforourhistoricSt.JamesCem-eteryandCrematorium.AsCanadacelebratedits150thbirthdaywemarkedour173rdyearofprovidingserviceandsupporttoTorontoandoursurroundingcommuni-ties.Wehadtheprivilegeofwelcomingmanyvisitorstowalkourgroundsandexploretherichhistorythat lieswithin our gates.Many visitors took advantage of ourself-tour historical gravesitemaps while others joinedformaltoursprovidedbythelocalCabbagetownHistor-icalSocietyorjoinedtourssponsoredbytheRoyalOn-tarioMuseum.
Moving into 2018 we look forward to finally engag-ing with the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority(TRCA)andourvariousprojectpartnerstoresolveourerosionissuealongthehillside.
This is ahugeundertaking that involves clearing scrubtrees,securingthehillsideslopewithpillarsandcurbs,thenbuildingupthesoiltoregradetheareaandrestruc-turedrainage.Theproject is sensitive toourhallowedgrounds.Existinggravespacewillnotbedisturbed;onlyrefurbished and enhanced. A further benefit providedbythisworkwillseeourleafcanopyopenuptoensuremore sunshine reaches into our ravine sections and agreener,healthierenvironmentwillresult.
2018alsomarksthebeginningofanewlandscapede-velopment that began with our new Chapel GardenColumbarium that features 64 double niches for cre-matedremains.ThisnewcolumbariumislocatedbythestepstoourhistoricSt.James-the-LessChapel(built in1861).Futureplansforthisareaincludearosescatter-inggardenanddevelopmentforfuturecolumbariaandgardens.ThesenewprojectswillensurethatSt.JamesCemeteryispositionedtoprovidefinalrestingplacesforgenerationstocome.

We continueourmonument restorationprogram thaton an annual basis cleans and restores many monu-mentsthatovertimehaveweatheredanddeclined.WeareproudofourhistoricsignificancewithinthecityofTorontoandinviteandwelcomeeveryonetocomeandvisitusandenjoythepeace,solaceandcharmthatwecallSt.JamesCemetery.

Change Ringers GuildTheSt. JamesCathedralGuildofChangeRingers cele-bratedits20thyearofringing,andmovingforward,wecontinuetoenjoythemarvellousinstrumentthatisthetwelve change ringing bells.We continue to welcomenew recruits to the tower, and are currently teachingsomewhovisitedusduringDoorsOpen2017.
Wecontinue toensure theupkeepof thebellswithapreventivemaintenance program; covering the frame,bearings,wheels,ropes, lighting,etc.TherelocationofthetelevisioninthenarthexmayprovideusadditionalopportunitiestoteleviseSundayserviceandspecialoc-casion ringing.
This year, four peals and thirteen quarter peals weresuccessfullyrung.Oneofthequarterswasontheminiring. Three pealswere by visiting bands, andonewascelebrating the 20th anniversary of the installation ofthebells.Twoquarterswere rung tohonourFr.DavidBrinton’s retirement, and one to welcome The Rev’dLouisePeters.Atotalof142quarterpealsand46pealshavebeenrunginthetowersincetheinstallationofthebellsin1997.Plansareinhandforapealweekendinthespringof2018,andifsuccessful,onewillbededicatedto Archbishop Johnson for his pending retirement. Aswell,wewill certainlybe schedulingaquarterpealonNovember11,2018,celebratingthe100thanniversaryoftheendofWWI.
The ringers hosted the North American Guild’s AGMovertheLabourDayweekendtogetherwithatrainingsessionpriortotheweekend.WewelcomedoverfortyvisitorsfromthroughoutCanada,theUnitedStatesandthe United Kingdom, who all enjoyed the ringing andsocialactivities.Fivesuccessfulquarterpealswererung
duringthistime.Aswell,wewerepleasedtoseetwentyringerswhowere eitherworkingor vacationing in To-rontoandchosetojoinusforringing.
Wecontinuetowelcomevisitorsandringforspecialoc-casions,bothsecularandliturgical,suchasDoorsOpen,the LOFT concert, and the AshWednesday Childrens’Group.Parishionersarealwayswelcometovisitthering-ing roomon Sundays, andduringpracticeonMonday(byappointment).
It isbothanhonourandaspecialcallingtobeabletoringtheCathedralbells,andIofferourgratefulthankstotheCathedralstaffandclergyforthesupportanden-couragementthatisprovidedtous.

Children & Youth MinistriesOver 2017 there havebeen significant changes to theChildrenandYouthministries.WiththedepartureofBri-anRaneyat thestartof theyear,weweregiftedwithgreat volunteers, and people who continued to loveandsupporttheparticipationoffamiliesinthelifeofStJamesCathedral.
MaryAsbilandJohnFraserhelpedleadtheSundaySchoolforthewinterandspringof2017.Duringtheirtimetheyexploredscripturethroughcrafts,andstories,andhelpedto grow the children’s understanding of faith throughwritingprayersandlearningthecreed.Agiftofmusicalinstrumentsbyoneofthechoirmembersbroughtanewvibrantenergytothegroup,andhelpedustomakealoudandjoyfulnoiseaswesingandworship.InJunetheycel-ebratedtheendoftheschoolyearwithaSundaeSundayby serving ice cream to the congregation following the11:00amservice.Theirpatienceandlovefortheseyoung-estmembersofourcommunitybroughtthemtogetherintoacohesivegroupwhereallwerewelcome,withchil-drenfromthenurseryjoininginthestoriesandsongs.Iamdeeplygratefulfortheirwork.
InSeptember,Icontinuedthegoodworktheyhadbeendoing.Wehavehadaverysteadycommunityofanav-erageoftenparticipantsmostSundaymornings,withagrowinggroupofchildrenjustundertheageofsixwhoarebeginningtoparticipateandengage.Intotalwehaveapproximately16familiesthatareinvolvedinourSun-daySchool.
We have had great occasional help with our SundaySchool fromPauline Ray,who provides and leads cre-ative crafts. I greatly appreciateNancyMalletopeningthearchivesforustoexplorethenativitysetsthispastEpiphany.Thevarietyofgiftswehaveheregreatlyben-efitsusallasacommunity.

Beyond Sunday School,we have had families assistinginlightingtheAdventwreath,helpingassidespersons,children assisting as servers during the 11:00am Eu-charist,aswellasworshippingalongsidethewholeSt.Jamescommunity.OnAshWednesdayAlisonHari-Singhstepped in to help coordinate – alongside additionalvolunteers–awonderfuldayoflearningandexploringforchildrenaroundtheDiocese.InNovemberwehadagreatSundaySchoolwelcomebrunchwherewegottoknoweachotherover foodand funtimes together. InDecemberwespentanafternoonmaking53ChristmascardstogiveoutwiththegiftbagsfortheDrop-InChrist-mas lunch.At thestartofAdvent, Idistributed16Ad-ventkitstofamiliestohelpthemuseanAdventwreathat home and journey through the Christmas season.During special services; at the baptism in the fall andduring Christmas, worship booklets helped encouragechildrentoworshipwiththeirfamiliesbyengagingwiththe readings and themes of the day through activitiesandquestions.
AsIlookbackonmyshorttimehere,ithasbeenawon-derful fall of growing relationships, increasing connec-tion,andofwelcomingfamilies.As I reflectonthepastmonths, there are wonderful moments of intergenera-tionalconnectionthatmakemesmile,slightbumpsintheroadwhichwillimprovewithtime,andlotsofthingsthatcausedmetowonderandimagine.AsIlookaheadtothecomingministryyear,Iamexcitedtocontinuetoconnectwithfamiliesandyouth;todreamandplanoutnewwaystogrowandconnectwithourcommunity.

Our ten members and two full-time trained mentorscome from both St. James and other parishes. Thebroad age range of 20s through 60s this year exem-plifies an equally broad range of perspectives and lifecircumstancesofourmembers. Inourorientationses-sioninSeptemberthegroupsetagoalforthemselvesto experience significant differences of opinion in ourdiscussionsandwehavebeenverymuchenjoyingtherespectful,life-giving,andsometimeseye-openingshar-ingofthoseviews.
EFMisoneoftheprogramsusedtotrainlayleadersanddeacons.Thisyearwehavetwoindividualsdiscerningacall to thedeaconateandone fourth-year studentor-daineddeaconlastyear.ButEFMisprimarilyaprogramforthelaityandourmembersarediscerningministryinawide range of activities fromnature conservancy tohospitalvisiting,youth leadership,contemplativeprac-tices, leadingyouthvisitsbetweenTorontoandnorth-ern indigenous communities,workingwith the home-lessinToronto,andthemomentbymomentservicetofamilyandcommunitythatrequiresalertness,commit-mentandimagination.

EFMisa4-yeareducationbyextensionprogramwhosepurpose is to providemembers with a background inScripture,Christianhistory,andtheology.Thedevelop-mentofbothspiritualandhistoricalunderstandingsoftheChristiantraditionisintendedtopromoteindividualministriesbythestudentsandgraduates.Theprogramwas developed at the University of the South at Se-wanee,Tennessee.TheCanadianbranchisadministeredthroughtheDioceseofKootenayinBritishColumbia.
The Cathedral EFM group meets alternate Saturdaymornings September through June in the CathedralCentreforfourhours.AninformationsessionisplannedforMayforany interested inknowingmoreabouttheprogram.

Education: Dialogues for LivingThemissionofDialoguesforLiving(DFL)istostimulatetheimaginationinthemovementtowardsjustice,heal-ing,andunderstanding.DFLboldlylivedintothiscallingthis year, aswe took risks,broughtourpublicwitnessto a new level, and engaged diverse communities. Intheyearof2017DFLorganized,hosted,promoted,andshared33freeandpubliceducationalevents.Ofthese33events,ninelectureswerepartofourongoing“TruthandReconciliation”(TRC)series.
TheTRCseriesbeganinJune2016,asweundertookatwo-year commitment to highlight stories and experi-ences of Indigenous peoples, the TRC process, and is-suesofcolonization.Thisseriesisaresponsetothe59th“CalltoAction”oftheTRCreport,whichaskschurchestooffereducationintheirroleincolonizationanditsef-fectonIndigenouscommunities.Atremendousaccom-plishmentof2017washosting the “Niigaani-gichigamiWater Festival” with the Niigaani-gichigami Collective,Toronto Urban Native Ministry, and Biidaaban at 40Oaks. The Festival had several events that highlightedthe importance and healing presence of the Spirit ofGod inand throughwater, fromChristian, Indigenous,andotherperspectives.Thiswidelyadvertisedandam-bitious project brought together diverse communities,cumulatingintheGratitudeWalkandFestivalonahotFriday in June when over a hundred people gatheredat the shores of Lake Ontario for a traditional water
ceremony, andmarched up to King St, shutting downtrafficandholdingcelebratorysigns tohonourandre-spect thewaterswedependon.TheWaterCeremonyfeaturedprayers from IndigenousKnowledgeKeepers,and representative from various Churches, Mosques,andother faith traditions. The “GratitudeWalk”up totheCathedralwasledbyEasternWoodlandSingers(In-digenouswomens’drumgroup)andwasconcludedwithlivefolkmusicandafreeBBQontheWestLawn.Near-ly threehundredpeople joinedusonthe lawnfor theFestival,includingfamiliesfromtheneighbourhood.Thecentralgoalof themultipleeventsof theWaterFesti-valwastobringtogetherdiversecommunitiestolearnabout,prayfor,andexpressourgratitudeforthewaterswedependon.Thevisiblewitnessinourneighbourhoodthat theWaterFestivalembodieddemonstratesan in-tentionofDFLtoprovidecelebratoryandsacredoppor-tunitiesforengagementwithpeoplebeyondthewallsoftheCathedral.
Within our community, we held a three-month longCatechismclass,wherein17peopleenteredintoacom-mittedandintensivedevelopmentoftheirfaiththroughstudy and fellowship. This group consisted of mostlynewcomers and peoplewanting to go deeper in theirspiritualformation,andconcludedwiththeirbaptisms,reaffirmationoffaith,andconfirmations.
Therehasbeen incredible support from theCathedralCommunityfortheworkofDFL.Onaverage,attendanceat our lectures tends to be around seventy people.Thoughmany of our attendees are parishioners at St.JamesCathedral,peoplecontinuetoparticipate inoureventsthatdonotattendworshipservices.Ourconsis-tentstreetleveladvertisements,webpresence,andso-cialmediaprofile,continuetobeavenuesfornewfolkstoreachandbereachedbyus.ThehiringofJessie-AnnBaines, our new Communications Officer at SJC, hasgreatlyincreasedthepossibilityofourcontinueddesiretomeetthespiritualneedsofourcommunity,reachouttoothers,andinvitepeopleintothelivelydialogueswearehavingatSt.James.

Health & Foot Care Clinic TheHealthandFootCareClinic,aCathedralOutreachProgram,isavitallinkinourmissiontohelpthevul-nerable and needy in our neighbourhood, includingthe homeless, under-housed, socially isolated, thoselivinginpoverty,andthosewithuntreatedmentalill-nessandaddictions.Theseconditionsdeterminethequalityoftheirhealthandwellbeing.Becauseofthisinstabilityandlifestyle,theyareunabletoaccessourpublic health care system. The Cathedral’s TuesdayDrop-Inistheirentréetohealthcareinasafeandwel-comingsetting.
DuringDrop-InhoursonTuesdays, theStreetHealthNurses andNurse Practitioner are ready to addresstheir healthcare needs with a health assessment,nursing treatment and management, and if neces-sary,areferralformedicalcareorotherservices.OurguestscanalsoseethenursesatStreetHealthDundasand Sherburne location, aswell as access amentalhealth worker, peer support worker, or for ID ser-vices.Eachafternoon,thestaffmemberswillinteractwitharound15to20guests.
OnTuesdayafternoonandFridaymornings,twoRNsgivefootcare,cuttoenails,treatcornsandcalluses,infections, blisters and leg ulcers. This is followingbyafootwash,andcleansocks.Oftenthesourceoftheirfootproblemsisimproperfootwear,sowerelyonanydonatedshoesorthenewshoesweareabletopurchasewithadditionalfundingfromtheEduca-tionforMinistryHotCrossBunfundraisingevent. Itisveryrewardingtowitnessthepositiveoutcomesofthecaretotheiroverallwell-beingandabilitytocopewiththeirotherproblems.
OurpartnershipwithStreetHealthisbasictothesuc-cessoftheseclinics.St.Jamescontributestheinfra-structure, nursing supplies andmaterials, and they,theprofessionalnursing service,which is consistentwithourChristianmodel;compassionate,caring,andwithoutprejudice.TheRegisteredNursesareAllanaSullivan, Wanda Menzies, Ahnita Sabti, and NursePractitionerMichelleStern.

Mandarin MinistryI’m honoured and privileged to summarize the workof theMandarinMinistry in 2017. Time flies, and wehavenowbeenatSt. JamesCathedral for threeyears.Wehavehadlotsoflaughsandtears;throughitall,westillbelievethatwearecaredforandlovedbyGod.Hisblessinghandhasbeenguidingus,sothatwemaybe-comeHistestimony.
Inthepastthreeyears,theMandarinMinistryhasgrownintoaveryhealthyministryandaministryfullofbless-ings.We initially focusedonone-on-oneBiblestudy inthekitchenandlaterdevelopedaweeklySundayMan-darinFellowshipserviceattheLectureRoomintheCa-thedralCentrewithattendanceof20-30people.Begin-ning thefirstSundayofSeptember2017,weusedtheCathedral sanctuary for our weekly service. Currentlyourweeklyworshipserviceattendanceisover40peo-pleaswegrow,whichenhancesandourexperiencesinGod’sfaithfulnessandguidance.
WebelievethattraditionalChristianliturgyisourAngli-cantreasure.WecontinuedourBasicCatechismCourse,consistingof25lessonstoexplaintheliturgy.WehavealsostartedaChristianEducationDepartmentofMan-darinMinistry, and focusing on training two new Cat-echism teaching assistants, so that theymay continuetoteachtheAnglicanfaithtoothers,understandingthesignificanceofthetheologyandthefaith.ItistruethattheCatechismisthecoreofourministry,forwebelievethatpeopleshallbuildtheirlivesontheWordsofGod.Andonlygrowingfromthisfoundation,ourlivescanbemoreabundant.Therefore,ChristianEducationisoneofthemostemphasizedpartsintheMandarinMinistry.

We continue to use the BCP Morning Prayer liturgyforourMandarinservice.WealsocontinuedtoofferaLentenRetreat,whichreceivedgreatfeedbackfromourMandarinpeople.Afterparticipating in theBasicCate-chismCourseandtheRetreat,fifteenpeoplewerebap-tizedandconfirmedattheEasterVigilattheCathedral.
Startingfrom2017,ourmonthlyTaizéservicechangedfrom the third to thefirstweekof themonth.On thefirstTuesdayofeachmonth,at7:00pm,wehaveabilin-gualTaizéService.Withmanycandlesandpeacefullightandsinging,EnglishisinterwovenwithChinese,echoingeachotherfromdistance,offeringourcordialprayer.Ev-eryTaizéisaveryserenemoment,ofwhichpeoplecantemporarilyretreatfromthenoisyworldintoourbeau-tifulCathedral,meetingGodinperson.
In lastyear, therehavebeen lotsofexcitingnewmin-istries under development. The most distinguishableoneisourMandarinMinistryChoir.Ourchoirmembersareparishionerswithoutanymusiceducationorback-ground.SincetheyenjoyedpraisingtheLordwithmusic,wedecidedtoteachthemsingingskills,suchasreadingmusic.Eventhoughtheyhavebeenlumberinginsinging,everyoneofushasbeenenjoyinga lot in serving theLord.Atthesametime,wealsohaveourfirstorganist,whomakesour servicemore formal, leading eachpa-rishionerdeeperintheSundayservice.
DuringHolyWeek,weorganizedaMandarin“StationsofCross”.WeinvitedourpeopletoattendaseriesofHolyWeekservices–MaundyThursday,GoodFriday,EasterVigil, and the Resurrection Sunday.On Easter Sunday,weheldaResurrectionTaizéPrayerMeetingwithtesti-mony,wherewesharedourownspiritualexperiencesofmeetingtheLord.Uponhearingeachothers’stories,weareencouragedtowalkaheadwithhopeuponourownspiritualjourney.
AstheMandarinFellowshipgrew,somechildrencameintoourmidst.Asitisimportanttonurturefaithinthedailylifeoftheyoung,weestablishedaMandarinSun-daySchoolandGodhasprovideduswithgiftedteach-erstoinstillBibleknowledge.GodhasprovidedIvyDu,aSundaySchoolteacherwhoisverypassionateinChildEducation.IvyhasactivelyplannedSundaySchoolactivi-ties,andgreatlyencouragedchildrentobeinvolvedintotheCathedralserviceasaserver.WeexpectourSundaySchooltobeexpandedandmoreestablishedinthecom-ing year.
TheMandarinYouthMinistryhasalwaysbeenoneofourfocalpoints.Onthefoundationofpaststudentfellow-ships,wecontinuetoreachouttoMandarinstudents.Wegavea“GospelTour”showcasingtheCathedral’sar-chitectureandorganizedotheractivitiesontheUniver-sityofTorontocampus.WeheldBBQsinthesummerfortheyoungpeopleasagroup,meetingwiththemboth
individuallyandingroups.WestartedthetrainingofouryouthasAltarServersinboththeMandarinServiceandtheEnglishService.TheseyoungpeoplenotonlydevotethemselvestotheAltarserving,butalsohaveshoneintheirprofessionalfieldthroughhelpingthechurch.WeiXu,an ITstudentofGeorgeBrown,afterhis research-ingandtesting,hasachievedthefullautomatizationoftheprintingofourservicebulletin;LeoWangisactivelyinvolved in theconstructionofourwebsite;StephanieTang, has not only performed duty as a Sidespersonin the Cathedral, but also has brought her experiencefrom the English side to theMandarin side.We orga-nizedsomeachievablevolunteerwork,trainedsometobebasicaltarserversorAltarGuildmembers,fosteredthehabitofscripturereadingandpraying,andofferedthemlotsofcarebothinspiritualandindailylife.Fur-thermore,wehaveestablishedaregularSaturdayYouthGroup, which attracts more youth to walk into thechurch, learningGod’sWord togethereveryweek.Ev-erymonth,wealsohaveayouthevent,suchasThanks-giving,Christmas, and theChineseNewYear. Throughtheseactivitiesandevents,moreyoutharedrawntoourfaith,andguidedbythefaith,sothattheirindividuallifecanbeestablishedmoreabundantly.
WeofferourthankstoDeanAsbilforhissupport,andtonewvicar,TheRev’dLouisePetersforhercareandteachingasoursupervisorandtheirlivingexamplesforourMandarinparishioners.Andwealsoofferourappre-ciation toallour co-workersat theCathedral for theirdiligentwork.Andwethankeveryparishionerfortheircareandsupport.OnSundayswhenChinesenewcom-ersworshippedattheEnglishservices,notonlydidthemembers of the congregationwelcome and sit besidetheChinesenewcomers,buttheyeventurnedthepagesofthebulletinsforthem.WhenIfirstsawthis,myeyeswerefilledwithtearsofjoy.Eventhoughwecomefromdifferent cultural backgrounds,we are still walking onthesamespiritualpath,forweworshipthesameGodinharmony,despitethelanguagebarriers.

Planning themusic for the funeral of themuch lovedArchbishopTerryFinlaywasadistinctprivilegein2017.In the week before his death, he spoke to us of his

favouritechoralpieces,throughrequestswhichwereallhonouredonthe25thofMarch.Drumming,Taizé,Pop,SpiritualsandtheClassicalcanonwerealloffered.ItwasatestamenttotheremarkableversatilityoftheCathe-dral’smusiciansthatalloftheseweretakenwellwithintheirstride.
DavidBriggsjoinedthemusicdepartmentin2012andinhisfiveyearsonstaffhehasdelighted,thrilled,anden-thusedmanycongregationswithhis remarkableorganplayingandcomposition. InAugusthetookupthepo-sitionofArtist-in-ResidenceattheCathedralofSt.JohntheDivineinNewYorkCity.Amongthefarewelleventsinhonourofhisministry,thechoirsangoneofhisfavou-rite anthems at his final evensong: C.H.H Parry’sblest PairofSirens.Despitemovingsouthoftheborder,Davidisgoingtobereturningforthreeseparateweekendsthisyear, to givemajor concertswith theCathedral Choir,play for the liturgiesand togive soloTuesday recitals.Hisnexthighly-anticipatedengagementswithusareinthelastweekofAprilandthefirstweekofNovember.
InFebruary,theCathedral’s inauguralAnglican101se-riesincludedalecturefromtheDirectorofMusiconourmusicalhistory:anewcomer’sguideset tobereincar-natedannually.Othermusiceducationeventsincludeda lectureaspartoftheReformationExhibiton itsMu-sic. The choirwas also invited to sing for theexhibit’sopeningwithintheFisherRareBooksLibrary,hostedbyPearceJ.Carefoote.
HolyWeek,asalways,representsanenormousmusicalundertaking.Yourchoirssang73differentpiecesofmu-sicinthosesevendays,includingsomeofthemostin-tenselychallengingscoreswehaveeverattemptedsuchas Levine’s A Prayer For TheGiftOfWisdom, allegri’s Miserere,Caldara’smonumentalCrucifixus in16parts,deLeeuw’sMiserere,andDove’sMissaBrevis to name butafewmilestones.AfterarestfulEasterMonday,ourCathedralChoirjumpedbackintoconcertactiontoper-formMahler’s 2nd Symphony ‘The Resurrection’ withDavidBriggsattheconsole,leadinganelectrifyingper-formanceofhismind-bogglingtranscriptionfororgan.
Eight singers from St. James gave a water-themedconcertatTrinityCollegeaspartoftheCathedral’sNi-igaani-Gitchigami Water Festival in May, which wasquicklyfollowedbyourannualLastNightofthePromsconcertwiththeBandoftheRoyalRegimentandbothour choirs. The merry month of May ended with thebittersweetfondfarewellpartytoourmuchrespectedvicar, David Brinton, where the choir sang a speciallyparodiedpsalm,askingtheLordto‘rememberthyser-vantDavid,andallhistrouble.’DavidBriggsdedicatedabeautifulnewcompositiontohimentitled‘LetUsLoveInDeedAndTruth’whichwassungasanintroitatthevicar’sfinalEvensong.
PentecostandAscension represented significantmusi-calmilestones for theCathedralChoir as, for the veryfirsttime,theysangJohnTavener’sdizzyingMissaWel-lensis,PatrickGowers’Viri Galilaeiandoneofthemostchallengingmassesinthewholerepertoire,FrancisPou-lenc’s MesseEnSol.
TheannualJazzMasswasaccompaniedbyBrianBarlowandhisbandattheendofJune,whichwasquicklyfol-lowedbyaconcertbythechoirofTrinityCollegefromtheUniversity of Cambridge. This completely sold outeventisausefulbarometerforgaugingourcity’sappe-titeforexcellentchoralmusicandconcerts,eveninthesummermonths.
Upstairsintheofficeouradministrativeassistant,Chris-tina Stelmacovich passed on the baton to ElizabethGroskorth who took on the role in July. The smoothweekly running of the music department remains inhighlycapablehandsandthesehiddenheroesofCathe-dralmusiccancertainlynotbethankedenough.
September was a particularly busy month, beginningwith the long-plannedMulti-FaithCelebration tomarktheopeningoftheInvictusGames.TheCathedralChoirsang alongside the Toronto Mass Choir during a poi-gnantceremonywhichwasattendedbymanyhundredsofmilitary personnel, athletes, and their families. TheChoir premièred a new mass by Montreal composer,LunaPearlWoolfwhojoinedusforourfinalrehearsals.HertrulyuniqueandetherealMissainFinesOrbisTerrae wasnamedaftertheCathedral’smotto,‘totheendsoftheearth’andispublishedbyOxingalemusic,dedicatedtoSt.James.Thefollowingweek,theChoirfilmedthreeepisodesof ‘PeopleWhoSingTogether’ forVisionTV.Wesangawidevarietyofhymns,motetsanddescantsallinaLibertyVillageZoomerTVstudiowithoutaircon-ditioning.Theseepisodesshouldbecomeavailableagainsoononline,followingtheendoftheseries.ThemonthwasroundedoffbyamusicalofferingattheBlessingoftheAnimalsservice.ThedepartmentwelcomedourfirstnewOrganScholarinoveradecade,ManuelPiazza.Thisstudentpositionwillbeauditionedeveryyear,offeringyoungpeopleachancetodivedeeperintotheAnglicanmusical tradition and learn about themany treasuresandidiosyncrasiestobefoundwithin.
InOctoberwewelcomedtheOxfordandCambridgeSo-ciety to Evensong, highlighting some interestingmusicthathascomefromthoseinstitutions.OurannualSer-viceofRemembranceincludedanotheracappellamas-terpiece which took around two months preparation:parry’s inimitable SongsofFarewell.
InNovember,amemberoftheCathedraldonatedalargepracticeorgantothemusicdepartmentinmemoryofherlate husband,Norman. Roma Page Lynde studiedwith

Theorgan committee continues to argue andplan forthe serious consideration of our instrument’s health.Theweeklyofferingtoourcongregationsandvisitorsofthecypheringdiapasons,shot1930sleather-work,andcumbersome1970sconsoleareakintotakingyourbe-lovedfamilyout foradrive inabeautifulheritagecar,butwithouta reliable steeringwheel,engineor seats.Yesitalllooksfinefromtheoutside,butcloserinspec-tion reveals that the journey ahead is not straightfor-wardorworthyofanhonouredguest.
TheChristmasperiod, likeHolyWeek, requiresa greatdealofmusicalaccompaniment.Itisduringthosehecticdays that I ammost grateful for theworkof the inde-fatigableIanSadler,ourorganist,whoisresponsibleforeither playing or organising over 100 recitals every year, and for countless stimulatingpreludesandpostludes. The Newcomers Series; Cathedral 101, Anglican 101andMission101,wasdevelopedtopromoteagreaterunderstandingofthehistory,theliturgy,themusic,themission,theprogramming,andthefaithcommunitythatbringsustogetheratSt.James,notjustonSunday,butsevendaysaweek.Mostimportantly,it’sanopportunitytoshareameal,aconversation,andgetbetteracquaint-edwithfellowparishionersaswellasclergyandstaff.
For three consecutive Mondays, three times a year,over 40 participants shared nine meals together,learnedaboutthehistoryandarchitectureofSt.James,
examinedtheliturgy,exploredthedevelopmentoftheAnglican faith and itsmusic, stepped into the chanceland its rituals,heardwonderful testimonialsof serviceand devotion, learned of itsmission in this communi-ty and reflected together on how our gathering, ourprayer,andourprogrammingmovesthroughthiscity.
Wehaveseenour‘newcomers’inthepews,thechoir,the chancel, volunteer at the Drop-In, serve pancakesandhotdogsatspecialevents,engagein lectureseriesandenjoyaconversationatcoffeehourafterservice.

OutreachIwould like to introducemyself; I amKathyBiasi, theOutreachProgramCoordinatoratSt.JamesCathedral.IstartedinthispositioninlateMayof2017.Iwouldliketothanktheotherstaffmembersthatoversawtheout-reachprogramming,whichincludestheDrop-Inandtheservices it provides,while itwas in transition. ShaniceViner, with the assistance ofMark Raab, planned andpreparedthemealsandShanicesupervisedtheTuesdayDrop-In and the volunteers. The dedicated volunteerswho include both parishioners and community mem-bers,andstaffweretheretosupporttheongoingworkthathappenedduringthattime.Theywerealsotremen-douscollaboratorsinthetransitionthathappenedwhenIwaswelcomedonboard.
So many new experiences have happened over thelastsixmonthsof2017thatsharingthemwithyouisapleasure.TheDrop-Inhascontinues theministryworkwith the surrounding community and individuals thatarestrugglingand inneedofsupportandcare. Itpro-videsnutritiousmeals,music,hand-knithats,theGoodFoodBox,haircuts,andapriesttospeakwithifsome-onefeelstheneedto.Althoughfindingpeoplewhocancuthairhasbeenastruggle,wehavebeenabletofind

TheDrop-InisnowanactivememberofSecondHarvestFoodRescueandTheTorontoDrop-InNetwork(TDIN).SecondHarvestwillassistwithsupplementingthemealstheDrop-Inmakesweekly.Wearewaitingtohearwhentheywill startdelivering,butuntil thattimetheDrop-Inwillarrangetopickupfoodattheirsiteonaweeklybasis.TheTDIN isagroupof54Drop-Ins thatprovidetrainingorfundsfortraining,information,andmeetingswheretheDrop-Inscansharetrendstheyareseeingandanysurplusresourcestheymighthave.
OnDecember8th,2017theDrop-InarrangedafulldayFoodHandlersCertificationTrainingprovidedbytheDailyBreadFoodBank.FourteenvolunteersandstaffmembersattendedandbecameCertified FoodHandlers. Iwouldliketocongratulateeveryoneoftheparticipantsfortheirhardworkandsuccessfulcertification.TheirpreparationoffoodforourguestsandtheparishionerswillbedonesafelywithintheGuidelinesofTorontoPublicHealth.
The Drop-In presently has volunteers coming in at9:00amtopreparehealthy,heartysoupsthatareservedeveryTuesdayexceptwhentheCathedralCentre’sca-terersprovide themeal.TheSoupGroup is stillonhi-atusbut ishoping tocontinue tomakingsoup for theDrop-IngueststoenjoyintheNewYear.Iwouldliketothank Vinci for making 300 traditional turkey dinnersforourguestsonBoxingDayandourin-housecaterer,MarkRaab,forsupplyingthewealthofdessertstoendthemeal.Everyoneenjoyedthegiftofmusicbyvolun-teers.WehadanabundanceofvolunteerstoassistfortheeventandagiftforeachofourgueststhatwereacontributedbyTheKnightTemplar.
July1stBBQwasalovelydayfullofgoodfood,goodmu-sicandwonderfulvolunteersthathelpedmakethedayasuccess.Thecommunityshowedupandenjoyedthecelebration.
It’sexcitingtothinkthatthenextyearisalsofullofnewpossibilitiesfortheOutreachProgram,whichhopefullyhavemanyofyouintriguedandwantingtoparticipate.

TheChristmasFoodDrivewasonceagain ledbyLarryEnfieldandCherylRichman,withmuchassistancefromWendyPappas,ourCathedralreceptionist.Over$3,525wasraisedforSt.Bartholomew’s,RegentPark,withallfooditemsgoingtotheirFoodBank.DuetochangesatAllSaints’SherbourneStreet,theMen’sCookingClasseswehadwishedtohelpdevelopwereunsuccessful thisyear.We hope to continue our support for food pro-gramsatAllSaintsatsomefuturedate.
Ric Hillyer continues to be an active member of theBoardofVictoria ShuterNon-ProfitCorporation.How-ever,theCathedralnolongerhasrepresentationontheBoardofMaryLambertSwale.
St. JamesCathedraloutreachextendsbeyondourbor-dersaswesupporttwoschoolsfordisadvantagedchil-dren–oneinManila(ThePatriciaMcAuliffeEducationalOrganization)andoneinSanMigueldeAllende,Mexico(CentroInfantildelosAngeles).CentroInfantilmergedthisyearwithCasadelosAngeleswhichisadaycarecen-treclosebyandsonowprovidescarefromsixmonthstosixyears.Thesepreschoolsprovideahealthystartforyoungchildrenandtheresultswhentheyenterthereg-ularschoolsystembearthisout.Bothschoolsaremostgratefulforourcontinuingsupport.

Refugee Response CommitteeThe Cathedral-Community Refugee Response Commit-teewas formed inNovember2015 in response to theSyrianhumanitarianandrefugeecrisis.Fromthebegin-ning,thecommitteehasbeenacollaborationbetweenthe Cathedral and the community. Our original goalwas tosponsor two families,oneSyrianandtheothera ‘named case’ (in which a group names the specificindividualstheywanttobringtoCanada),whichcouldbeSyrianoranothernationality.WeworkwiththeAn-glican-UnitedRefugeeAlliance(AURA),whoactsasourSponsorship AgreementHolder, provides training, andensures thatweareprepared tosupport the refugeeswithwhomwearematched.
In2017,thecommitteedevelopedagovernancestruc-tureandbecameastandingcommitteeofSt.JamesCa-thedral.Weare grateful forCouncil’s support anden-couragementofourwork.
BecauseNovember2017markedourtwo-yearanniver-saryandthetermofacommitteememberistwoyears,some committee members retired and several morehavejoined.Bytheendof2017,therewere16commit-teemembers;eightfromthecommunityandeightfromtheCathedral.
Likemanysponsorshipgroups,weexperiencedadelayinbeingmatchedwithaSyrianfamily.However,wearehappytoreportthattheJoukayerfamilyoffivearrivedfromSyriaviaBeirutonJune1;thethreeboysaread-justingwelltoschoolandlearningEnglishatanastonish-ingrate.MomistakingESLandexploringemploymentopportunities as a skilled seamstress. Dad combinespart-time work in his field as a welder/metal workerwithpart-timeESL.Thefamilyrecentlymovedfromtheirtemporaryhousingintoathree-bedroomapartment.
Kambiz, thefirstpersonwesponsored,celebrated theone-yearanniversaryofhisarrivalinmid-July.Kambiz’sapplication to bring his daughter from Iran under theOne YearWindowprogramwas successful, and she isexpectedtoarrivebyMarch2018.Wewillserveashersponsorshipgroup.
Thus,wehavemetouroriginalgoalofsponsoringtwofamilies,thoughnotinthewayweexpected.Butwearelearning that refugeesponsorshipnever followsapre-dictablecourse.
Unfortunately, the sponsorship of a named case – amotherandson fromEritrea–provedunfeasibleand,afterconsultationswithAURA,wereluctantlyendedourworkonthis.
TheabsenceofESLclasses inAugust continues tobeachallengeandwearestillworkingwithotherstoadvocatewiththefederalgovernmentformoreESLresources.
Onbehalfofthecommittee,Iextenddeepgratitudetoallwhohelpedwithfundraising,tothemanyvolunteerswhoassistedusinseveraldifferentareas,andtotheCa-thedralstaffwhohavebeenunstintingintheirsupportofourwork.

ReGeneration (20s & 30s)ReGenerationistheCathedral’sministrytoyoungadultsintheir20sand30s.ThisgroupiscomprisedofyoungerChristianpeoplewhoreflectthetransitorynatureofur-banlifeinToronto.Despiteourrespectivecommitmentsat St. James, TheRev’d Leigh Kern and I haveworkedhardthispastyeartoprovideaconsistenttimefortheseyoungadults–peoplewhoareconstantly intransition–tomeettogetherinordercultivateasenseofstabilityandcommunity.
Throughout 2017, the ReGeneration Bible Study andSpiritualityDiscussionGrouphasmetinthesecond-floorkitchen of the Cathedral Centre after the 11:00amservice.Wemeet every otherweek to read the Bibletogetherinatypeofcommunallectiodivina(prayerfulreadingoftheBible).Duringthistime,thegroupsharesameal,readsoneofthelectionaryreadingsfortheday,andthenpraystogethertoendthemeeting.
Whilethereisacoregroupoffiveorsixmembers,thegroup often welcomes newcomers. Sometimes 10-12people attend andwe are always amazed at how oursimplemeal extends like the five loaves and two fish-es. TheBible study also casts awidenet. I amalwayssurprisedtoseethetrulydiversemixofyoungeradultsthatcomestogetheratthesebi-weeklymeetings–folksfrom completely different walks of life and differentnationalities,whohappilymeettoshareameal,discusstheScriptures,andprayforeachotherastheygrowinfriendship.BothLeighandIhavebeenblessedbylead-ing these younger adults into deeper faith and morenuancedtheologyandspirituality.
Thispastyear,LeighandIwerevery intentionalaboutencouraging members of ReGeneration to participatemorefullyinthemanyministriesalreadytakingplaceattheCathedral.Ourgoalwasto integrateourmembersmoredeliberatelyintothelifeandworshipofSt.James.IamhappytoreportthatwenowhavemembersofRe-Generationparticipatingassidespersons,readingatthe9:00and11:00amservices,singing in theparishchoir,and serving at the altar on Sundaymornings. This hasbeenasignificantandwelcomechange intheministryofReGeneration.
Itiswithsadness,butalsojoyfulexpectation,thatIsub-mit this report. InMay 2018 Iwill be ordained to thetransitionaldiaconateandwillbemovingonfrommin-istryattheCathedral.IbelievethiswillbeanimportanttimeforthegrouptoprayanddiscernwhatisnextforReGeneration. The group has already requestedmore
events,activities,andsocialtime.Meetingthisfeltneedwillrequireagreaterinvestmentbothfinanciallyandinregardtostaffing.Inthelastnumberofyears,wehavemadeaconcertedefforttobuildacoregroupofyoung-er adults within the ReGeneration community. Thereisenergyinthisgroupformoreministry.ThefutureofReGenerationisfullofpossibilities.

Filmingcanbequitelucrativeifamajorproductionfilmsonsite.Thesegroupshaveinterestinallofourspaces,includingtheCathedral.Wealsorentspaceforfilmpro-ductionstohostlunchandbackgroundholdingspaces.OurvenueislistedontheOMDC(OntarioMediaDevel-opment Corporation)website that film groups use forsourcing venues for filming.Most of the film locationscoutsareveryfamiliarwithourvenuesandtheymovefromonefilmprojecttoanotheroverthecourseoftheircareer.

Servers and Sacristans GuildWhoweareandwhatwedo:Thededicatedgroupofvolunteers who make up the Servers and SacristansGuildwork each Sunday throughout the year to assisttheclergy,andtoensurethesmoothoperationofeachservice.InadditiontoregularSundayliturgies,theyalsoassistatweekdayliturgies,seasonalliturgies,andallDi-ocesanliturgiespresidedoverbytheBishopofToronto.
The Guild provides Sacristans, who set up the sacredvessels,vestments,andbookspriortotheservice,andensurethesanctuary,chancel,vestry,andsacristy,andtheircontents,aremaintained ingoodorder.AServerassists the clergyduring the service, actingas aCruci-fer,anAcolyte,anEpistle-Server,aGospel-Server,Duty
Server and Thurifer (who also rings the Sanctus Bellsduring the Eucharist) or a combination of these roles.MostmembersarebothSacristansandServers.
The Guild also provides a Scheduler, who coordinatesthe team monthly; a Duty Server, who oversees theteamateachserviceandorchestratestheirmovements;aSubdeacon,whendeemednecessary,whoassiststheattending Priest and the Deacon, at the altar, as oneofthethreeSacredMinisters;ChaliceBearersforHolyCommunion,whoarelicensedbytheBishopofTorontoforaperiodof threeyearsat the requestof theDeanand Wardens; and the leaders of Morning Prayer onSundayat10:15am.
Servers are needed at five Sunday services – typicallysevenserverseachSunday–plusmorethanfourdoz-enspecialservicesincludingholidays,eveninglectures,Diocesan services and funerals. As you can see, thereis a need for a largemembership in the ServersGuildtocoveralltheseservicesandwealwayswelcomenewmembersofanyage.
Wewelcometoourranks,universitystudentsfromvari-ouscollegesinTheological/Divinitystudies,whoareas-sistinguswhilelearningthebasicsoftheroleswetakeduring the services. Our junior members continue toserveasBoatBoy/Girlwithdignityandgrace.

Several liturgical events deserve special mention. WehadaveryfullHolyWeekagainthisyear,withafullTri-duum,including,foronlythesecondtimeinmanyyears,theGreatVigilofEaster.Themajoradditiontoourcal-endarwastheGoodFridayProcessionofWitness,whichhadnotbeenseen in theparishsinceFatherPashler’sdeathin1959.TheWayoftheCrosswasfollowedalongthestreetsofRegentPark,notonlybymembersofourowncongregation,butbyasizeablenumberofpersonsfrom neighbouring churches, including 614 SalvationArmyCorps.Twostationsthatwereespeciallypoignant:“JesusMeetshisBlessedMother”occurredatthePeaceGarden,whichwasplantedbymothersofourcommuni-tywholosttheirsonstogunviolence,and“TheWomenofJerusalemWeepforOurLord”occurredonthecorneracross from the siteatwhichan18-year-oldmanwasshottodeath infrontofhisownmotherearlier intheyear.Participantsfoundthistobeverymeaningful.
OurPatronalFestivalinAugustwasagreatsuccessagainthisyear.DeanStoutepreachedtoacongregationof88.Theservicewasfollowedbyamarvellousmealpreparedbymembersoftheparish.
OntheThirteenthSundayafterTrinity (September10)Archbishop JohnsoncameforhisannualvisitationandcelebratedPontificalSungMasswithconfirmations.Last
year had been the first confirmation since 2008, withjustoneconfirmand;thisyearsixwereconfirmed,andlastyear’sconfirmandwasMCoftheMass!Thecongre-gation—110souls—wasarecordattendanceinmytime.
Perhapsourmostimportantliturgicalwitness,however,hasbeenourresponsetoseveralviolentdeaths inthecommunity.InearlyJulyayoungmanknownbymeandveryclosetoothermembersoftheparishdiedsudden-ly of an apparent drug overdose. Although the imme-diate family are not parishioners, it seemedpastorallyappropriatetovisitbothhismotherandgrandparents.ARequiemMasswasoffered,andgratefullyaccepted.Justovertwenty-fivefamilymembersandclosefriendsattended.Severalongoingpastoral relationships in theneighbourhood have either emerged from or beenstrengthenedfromthis.Anotherdevelopingresponsetoviolence inourmidsthasbeenour ‘emergencyprayerwalks’.Twicethissummersmallgroupsoffiveorsixpa-rishionersarrangedwithafewhours’noticetopraytherosaryat the sitesof shootings in thePark. Such swiftreactionandorganisationwouldhavebeen impossibleatStBart’sevenayearago.Althoughthegroupsweresmall,theseactsdidnotgounnoticed,andtheyprovid-ed an important witness to our parish’s commitment(andindeedtheCathedral’sandDiocese’scommitment)toRegentPark,notjustinthebestoftimes,butalsointheworst.
For threemonths this summer we were privileged tohave a full-time Wycliffe student, Alexandra Pohlod,working in theparishundermysupervision.Alexandraundertookseveralnewinitiatives.Oneofthesewasdo-ingherdeskworkinthechurchbuildingattimeswhenitwouldotherwisebeclosed.Throughthisextrapasto-ralpresenceintheworshipspaceshewasabletoformpastoralrelationshipswithseveralpeoplewhowerenotregularattendeesoftheparish.AlexandraalsocreatedanextensionofourThursdaybreakfastprogrammebygatheringagroupofvolunteerstostartabreakfastclubat the seniors’ residenceat252SackvilleStreet.Over-sightoftheclubwastakenoverbyanotheryoungpa-rishionerwhenAlexandrawenton vacation inAugust,andcontinueswithanever-growinggroupofvolunteers.Throughthisoutreachwehavemademanymorecon-tactsinthebuilding.
DuringtheChristmasseasontheparishhostedtwonewoutreach initiatives,alongwithourusualfoodvoucherprogrammeandmyannualpastoralvisitsandarrange-mentofassistancetocommunitymembersidentifiedtomeas standing inparticularneed. Thefirstwasa tur-keysupperhostedbymembersoftheparishandfriendsfromotherChristianfaithcommunitiesaroundtheCity.
ThefollowingdaythechildrenofourChildren’sCentreperformed aChristmasPageant immediately followingthe ParishMass. In the afternoon the parish hosted a

WewereunabletohosttheStBart’sYoungAdultsGroupChristmasDinnerat252SackvilleStreetthisyear,duetoa scheduling conflictwith our partner, Preserve Indul-genceCatering(althoughwe’vealreadybegunplanningnextyear’seventwiththem).Wedid,however,hostacoffeeandcookieseventintheafternoonofChristmasDaywithDeaconJamesLiuandmembersofSt. JamesMandarinMinistry.Themembersof the fellowshipat-tendedourMassof theDayat11:00am,atwhich theEpistleandGospelwerereadinMandarin,andtheser-mon translated by MorningWang. Then in the after-noonwe setup the commonareaat ‘252’ andvolun-teersfrombothparishesknockedondoorsthroughoutthe building. Approximately twenty residents (most ofwhomwereunilingualMandarinspeakers)cameouttocelebratewithus.One residentplayedpiano through-outtheevent.ChristmassongsandcarolsandtraditionalChinesefolksongsweresung,andtheeventconcludedwithabilingualversionof theAmerican folk standard,theRedRiverValley!
Theparishcontinuestogrowinnumbersandfinancial-ly.Ourfastest-growingdemographic iscurrentlyunder45.Wenowhavefouryoungfamilieswithsmallchildrenwhoattendonaregularbasis.Inthefallwere-openedthechildren’scornerintheLadyChapel(anothergifttousfromthepreservedwritingsofFatherPashler!).Eachweek following Saturday Evensong, two pews are re-movedfromthechapel,aPersianrugisputdown,andthespaceisfilledwithtoysandcolouringbooks.Thephi-losophybehindthisareaistomakethechurchthechil-dren’s home, tomake them feel natural and comfort-ableinthespaceasearlyastheycan.Anearlyindicatorofthecorner’ssuccesshasbeentwonine-year-oldswhohave‘graduated’andjoinedtheservers’guild!
Theparishagainended theyearwitha surplus,aswehavesinceat least2013.The increasedbudgetforun-designateddonations (from$95,000 to$100,000)wasmetbythelastSundayinDecember,despitethedeathsofseveralregularandlargedonors,andthelossofabout$5,000duetothediminishedmeansofoneortwooth-ers.Thisisanenormousincreasefromjustover$53,000that theparishhadmanaged to raise in2013.This in-comelinehasbeenincreasedto$110,000for2018.

WehadguestspeakersinMarchandApril,andinMaywe held our 15th annual Mooreland’s Baby Shower.Weprovideda light lunch,andmanyattended.Contri-butionswerereceivedfromtheParishandfromHappyHandsKnitting,theco-sponsorsofthegroup.Weplantoholdthe16thAnnualShoweronMay10,2018.
June is Seniors Month in Ontario, so the York GrouphostedaCelebrationofSeniorsMonth.Ourguestspeak-erwasTheRev’dDavidNeelandswhowastheDeanofDivinityandMargaretE.Fleck,ChairofAnglicanStudiesatTrinityCollege.TheirtopicwasHistoryoftheCathe-dralinTorontoasthiswasCanada’s150th.
InSeptember,theYorkGrouphadlunchwithTheRev’dWalterHannamfromSt.Bartholomew’sChurch.Hewasan excellent motivational speaker and told us aboutthe outreach that St. Bartholomew’s is doing in theneighbourhood.
InOctoberwetouredtheAgaKhanMuseumandpro-videdbustransportationtoandfromtheChurch.About19wereinattendance.TheMuseumhasArtandworksfromalmostalltheMiddleEasterncountriesandwefeltitwas educational in our spiritual life to see this. Thegrouparelookingforwardtoanothertourin2018.
November,weheldourRemembranceDayevent.ThreemembersoftheRoyalCanadianLegionattendedandtoldusabouttheirgoodworks,recruitment,andtheirhistory.Weprovidedalightlunchwhichwasenjoyedbyall.
On December 14 our final event for 2017, we held a“MeettheVicar”lunchwithTheRev’dLouisePeters.Alunch of “Christmas” tourtiere pie and potatoes wereserved.Someonebroughtbubblytocelebratethesea-son.Itwasaniceclosingto2017.

Wediddecidethatoneofourmaturing$5000 invest-ments be contributed to installing an accessible bath-room door to thewomen’s washroom on the groundfloor,andthisrequesthasbeensenttoRobSaffrey.IdidconsiderwhetherYorkGroupwaseligibleforanOntarioSeniorsGrantandwastoldthatwewereeligibleforupto$3000.Agrantfortakingseniorstoeventswascovered;howevermyideaofatriptoStratfordwouldexceedthetotalallowedthistime.Butgrantspopupquiteregularlyforseniors,Aboriginals,andothergroupsandweshouldkeepabreastofanyopportunitiesthatareavailable.

Angela Carroll gave theWardens’ Report. She stated it has been a year of dynamic growth with someoutstandingspecialserviceswithattendance inrecordnumbers.Clergyhavebeenencouragingmemberstobecomemoreengagedandinvolvedwiththemanyactivitiestakingplace.TheRev’dLeighKernhasbeenleadingtheyoungadultsReGenerationbiblestudy,wehavehadtoaddchairsfornewcomersforthat,whichisaproblemweliketohave.WelookforwardtoMay28,adayofbothsadnessandcelebrationwhenwesaygoodbyetoCanonBrintonafter17yearsasVicarand,morerecently,alsoSub-Dean.Angelaofferedourthankstohimandsaidthat,althoughwecan’tbegrudgehimhisretirement,wehopehewillalwaysconsidertheCathedraltobehishome.LosingaVicarleadstoaVicarSearchCommittee.Thecommitteeiscomprisedof theDean,AngelaplusAyeshaDavid,SusanGrahamWalker,RobertHart,SarahMcDonaldandGeorgeMcNeillie.AnynamestobeputforwardforVicaroranyideasforthecommitteemaybesentbyemailtoinfo@stjamescathedral.cawith“VicarSearchCommittee” inthesubject lineandwillbeforwardedtothecommittee.Thereismuchforwhichtogivethanks,thecongregationisgrowing,thrivingandblessed.

Don Solomon introduced the Financial Statements.He said hewouldnot goover it line by line butgivehighlights.Heaskedpeopletopleasesavetheirquestionsuntiltheend.HedrewattentiontotheAuditor’sReport,preparedbyGrantThornton,LLPonpage1.TheAuditor’sopinionwasunqualifiedasusual,nottypicalwithcharitableorganizations,atestamenttoourgoodaccountingpractices.Therewasa$60Kdeficitin2016butmostlyoffsetbydesignateddonations.Therewasareductionintheoperatingfunddeficit, it isshrinking.Rentalsexceededexpectationsandthecemeterymetitstarget.Henotedthatthe$500,000bequestonpage4wasadifferentbequestthanthe$499,282oneonpage5.ChangesinFundBalancesareshownonpage6.$423,003incapitalassetswerepurchasedforthefabricoftheCathedral.

WinstonWrightsaidhenoticedareductionfrom2015intheoperatingfundlinefortheorganist,choirandmusiclinepage4andaskedifwewerepayingthechoirlessthisyear.RobSaffreyansweredthatour2017commitmenttothemusicprogramisincreasing,notdecreasing.In2015,weheldanumberofconcertsthatdidnotoccurin2016,accountingforthediscrepancy.

This budget provides for a new position, CommunicationsManager.2016wasayearoftransitionwelcomingthenewDean,AndrewAsbil.2017willalsobeayearoftransitionwiththenewVicar.WearethankfulfortheleadershipofourAssistantCurate,LeighKern,withthenewDialoguesforLivingeducationalseries.DirectorofMusic,RobertBusiakiewiczhasmovedtofulltime.WiththedepartureofDavidBriggs,wewillbetakingonanOrganScholarforthefirsttimeineightyears.WewillhaveanewSundaySchoolDirectorandanewDrop-InCoordinator.OurannualallotmenttoDiocesanSynodmaychange;asignificantincreasetothecost.A13%increaseinofferingsissought,aswellascontinuedgrowthinSundayattendance.Membersareaskedtoprayerfullyconsiderthisrequesttohelpusreachourgoals.
JudithMillsaskedabouttheincreaseinSynodcostsandsaidshewasdistressedtoseesomuchlessgoing tooutreach.RobSaffrey spokeabout thedifficultyof representingoutreachexpenses.OnceamonthwehaveoneofourvenuecatererscontributelunchtotheDrop-In.Theybillusandthendonatethemoneybacktoouroutreachprogram.TherewillbeanincreaseinworkhoursforournewSundaySchooldirectorandfortheDrop-InCoordinator.Synodcostsarebasedonaformulaaveragingoverthreeyears.Thisassessmentisbasedon2013,2014and2015.DeanAsbilsaiditisausuallyagoodthingforparisheswithmoreresourcestopaymoretotheDiocesetosupportthoseparishesthatarenotthriving.HisfantasyinhislastparishwastobethebiggestdonortotheDiocese.HesaidtheCathedralshouldbethenumberonedonor,aswehaveresourcesmostparishescanneverdreamof.
