Welcome to the Pilbeam Theatre’s 2020 See It Live Theatre Season.
Over the years, theatregoers have enjoyed many superb shows at the Pilbeam Theatre as part of the See it Live Season.
It is great to be able to see these shows in our region, but hand in hand with that comes the ability for locals to be directly involved. We have many talented performers here and Council is very proud to offer them opportunities to be involved with many of the productions in the Season, whether it be in workshops for school students or opportunities to perform on stage.
One of the highlights each year is our musical. In 2020, Council will produce Mamma Mia, this time with an entirely local artistic team. Since their inception, Council’s musicals have been led by professional directors, so I think it is fitting
that members of our own local community, who are very experienced in their own right, now take the reins.
Also this year we welcome the Rockhampton Symphony Orchestra to the See It Live Season. This orchestra is a community-driven initiative and Council is pleased to be able to give these performers an opportunity to showcase their talent to the wider community.
This is my last See It live Season foreword, as I plan to retire from local government at the next election. I sincerely wish you well and I will hopefully see you at the theatre in future years.

People around the world have fallen in love with the music of ABBA. Now you can experience Mamma Mia, the worldwide hit based on the supergroup’s music, produced and performed live on stage here in Rockhampton.
Following on the success of Kinky Boots, We Will Rock You and Wicked, Mamma Mia is Rockhampton Regional Council’s 2020 musical.
The show, which premiered in 1999 and has since become a long running worldwide hit, features Abba hits including Dancing Queen, Knowing me Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, Money Money Money, SOS, and Mamma Mia, just to name a few.
Set on a Greek island paradise and inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s heart-warming tale centres around Sophie, a young bride-to-be. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

Health professionals are with us when we’re born, and they’re with us when we die. They devote their lives to caring for us, but how do we care for them? Can a doctor or nurse give a patient the best possible care if he or she hasn’t slept for days? What if they also being bullied or sexually harassed at work? What if they complain about having to work excessive hours, but are told to stop whinging and suck it up? How do they cope with the pressure?
Based on hours of in-depth interviews with doctors and nurses about their experiences of training and working in hospitals, Grace Under Pressure is a surprising, intimate, and deeply moving theatre experience that reveals these hidden stories of health professionals in their own words. Ranging from wildly funny to utterly heartbreaking, the stories within Grace Under Pressure will leave no audience member unaffected. Beautifully staged and disarmingly performed, Grace Under Pressure is a truly unique theatre experience.

Searching for the secular songs that were sung after church, Mission Songs Project looks to explore the day to day life of the mission days, from cultural identity to love and loss. These unique songs performed by an extraordinary trio of Indigenous musicians consist of almost forgotten stories that illuminate the history of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait elders, families and communities.
Presented as an acoustic trio, Jessie takes audiences on a musical journey across Australia. She engages through intimate storytelling, moving harmonies and historical insights. Using humour and truth to share the voices of elders as they would around a warm campfire or kitchen table.

Sydney Dance Company will explode the everyday and take you into the sublime with an electrifying double bill featuring Rafael Bonachela’s newest creation Impermanence and Melanie Lane’s critically acclaimed WOOF.
Impermanence sees Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela join forces with Bryce Dessner of iconic American rock band The National who will compose a world premiere score that explores the ephemeral nature of all things. Completing the double bill is Melanie Lane’s smash-hit WOOF. Set to a bold electronic score by UK musician Clark, WOOF imagines a futuristic, apocalyptic fantasy with choreography that is ‘witty and fresh’ (The Sydney Morning Herald).
2020 is the year to experience dance that will make your heart beat fast and your blood run hot. Don’t miss Sydney Dance Company in all their quicksilver brilliance.

Often described as the greatest opera of them all, Tosca embraces the grand themes of the human spirit brought to life by the Italian master, Giacomo Puccini.
Set in 1970s Italy, step back to a world of iconic style and lush glamour at a time of dramatic political and social change. Tosca, a famous opera singer, is devoted to the painter Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the tyrannical Chief of Police, has his own plans for her. What ensues is a gripping tale of lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder that careens at breakneck pace.
Opera Queensland stars Antoinette Halloran, Rosario La Spina, and José Carbó shine alongside the OQ’s Community Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble as conducted by Vanessa Scammell.
In a world of political tyranny and widespread intolerance, Tosca offers a timeless plea for artistic and political freedom. This is opera where women are not afraid to fight for their right to be equal.

Edward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun.
Meanwhile the keepers are in hot pursuit, hunting high and low to relocate their crowd-pleasing, much-loved feathered attraction. Edward stays one step ahead until he’s ready to head home; concluding that being an emu might be just right after all. Back at HIS pen, a very shocking but welcome surprise awaits... he’s been replaced by the rather wonderful Edwina the Emu!
The award-winning Monkey Baa team brings to the stage the classic Australian tale of two emus searching for their identity. The emus’ journey of hilarity and tenderness leads them to discover that the best thing you can be is …you!
