Gooch began his career at the University of Central Florida (UCF) as a defensive back in 1981. He went on to spend 22 seasons as a member of the coaching staff. He started his coaching career in 1983 as a graduate assistant, quickly moving thru the ranks and becoming UCF’s recruiting coordinator.

During his eight years as the recruiting coordinator, he aided the program’s transition from Division II through I-AA and into I-A status. He was named assistant head coach in 1998 and took over as interim head coach at the end of the 2003 season. Gooch and Gary Gibbs of University of Oklahoma are the only two coaches in Division I football to rise from player to head coach without leaving their alma mater.

At a White House ceremony in April 1998, Gooch and former UCF tailback Dwight Collins (who is deaf and received ESPN’s 1997 National Spirit Award) were recognized by President Bill Clinton and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. Gooch was a finalist for the National Student-Athlete Day GIANT STEPS Award in the category of Collegiate Coach joining Dean Smith of North Carolina and Eddie Robinson of Grambling. He finished runner-up to Robinson, but was honored as the inaugural NCAA Division I-A Assistant Football Coach of the Year at the 1998 AFCA National Convention in Dallas.

NCAA All-Americans and UCF Hall of Fame members Willie English, Marquette Smith, Elgin Davis and Dee Brown are running backs who played for Gooch. Others who went on to play in the NFL include Aaron Sam, Terrance Williams and Alex Haynes.

Upon leaving coaching in 2004, Gooch accepted a position as the Executive Director of the UCF Athletic Association’s Golden Knights Club. In 2005 after 25 years of service to the university, he left UCF and entered into private business opening Florida operations for an Atlanta commercial real estate firm. In 2007, Gooch opened his own commercial real estate firm, Tizon Commercial, LLC.

Gooch was inducted into the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. The following year he was named “Educator of the Decade” by the UCF College of Education.

Prior to the 2007 season, Gooch accepted a position as President and General Manager of the Arena Football League’s (AFL) Orlando Predators. Gooch led the two-time AFL World Champions to their 20th straight playoff appearance during 2008.

Gooch, who received his bachelors and masters degrees at UCF, continues as the Managing Partner/Broker of Tizon Commercial and an adjunct professor at UCF teaching Coaching Methods. He is married to Linda Gooch, UCF’s longtime Cheerleading coach of 35 years, who has won national championships in 2003, 2007 and 2018. Alan and Linda have two sons, Zachary and Noah.

Alan Gooch has committed his life to one thing…helping others. His primary vehicle for doing this has been his work for more than 25 years in college athletics and, primarily, football. Alan is the Executive Director of the Orlando Sports Foundation and the CEO of the Cure Bowl. In December 2015, the organization’s goal of bringing a new and different college football bowl game experience to Orlando, Florida came to fruition. The bowl’s goal is to create awareness and additional financial resources for cancer research.

In Fall 2007, college football in Orlando experienced a surge of support thanks to the completion of a new, on-campus stadium at the University of Central Florida. The community enthusiasm inspired a group of Orlando leaders and philanthropists — many of who were UCF alums — to bring a new college bowl game to Orlando and to make it unique by directly tying it to a charitable cause.

That goal became a reality in December 2015 with the inaugural AutoNation Cure Bowl kicking off between Georgia State and San Jose State. The game featured a bounty of big plays on special teams, which was only appropriate on a night dedicated to raising money for a special cause.

During the game a spotlight was shined on the fight against breast cancer with survivors of the disease and family members included in pregame and halftime ceremonies.

In addition, AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson and his wife Alice, who is a breast cancer survivor, presented a check for $1 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The Orlando Sports Foundation, led by executive director Alan Gooch and president Megan Dowdy, also presented a check to Myra Bibblowit, CEO of the BCRF and Dr. Annette Khaled of the UCF College of Medicine, for $150,000, which was the largest single donation ever made by a bowl game to a charitable cause.

Following the fourth installment of the AutoNation Cure Bowl in 2017, Orlando Sports Foundation and AutoNation have teamed up to provide donations totaling $3.7 million. BCRF has also awarded local researcher Dr. Khaled over $1.1 million in funding grants.

Unfortunately, Laura Goldstein will not be able

to experience the bowl game that she helped

inspire. She lost her long and hard fought battle

with breast cancer on April 20, 2011. On March

24, 2005, Board CFO Sandi Breitenstein passed

away from Stage IV liver cancer. The loss of

Laura, Sandi and others who will lose their

battle today, tomorrow, and the days to come

against the cancer, will continue to motivate us

to make the Cure Bowl a success.

The American Athletic Conference consists of 12 prestigious institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the U.S. Naval Academy (football only), the University of South Florida, Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University, University of Tulsa and Wichita State University (non-football).

In 2018, The American once again saw a member school claim a spot in a New Year’s Six bowl as UCF capped a 12-win season in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. It was the the fourth time in six seasons that The American placed its champion in a New Year’s bowl. UCF was ranked No. 11 in the final Associated Press poll, while Cincinnati was No. 23 in the final coaches’ poll.

The 2017 football season saw The American enjoy unprecedented success as UCF finished as the only undefeated team in the nation, and the first in the previous four college football seasons, capping a 13-0 campaign with a win against Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. UCF claimed a national championship as the No. 1-ranked team in the Colley Matrix and was ranked No. 6 in the final Associated Press poll.

Individual teams in The American have enjoyed some of their best seasons in program history as members of the conference. UCF has finished in the national top 10 twice in six seasons as a conference member – in 2013 and 2017. Houston went 13-1 in the 2015 football season, setting a school record for wins, while Navy won a program-record 11 games in its first season in the conference, also in 2015. Memphis, which had not won 10 games in a season since 1938, has registered two 10-win seasons in the last four years (2015, 2017), while Temple enjoyed its first 10-win season in school history in 2015. USF finished in the top 25 for the first two times in program history (2016, 2017). Cincinnati registered its third 11-win season in program history in 2018.The American holds media rights partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which give the conference outstanding national exposure on the two industry leaders in sports television.

American Athletic Conference teams have access to the pinnacle of college football’s postseason structure. An American representative would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams in the CFP selection committee’s final ranking. Otherwise, the league would place its champion in a New Year’s Bowl if it is ranked higher than the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference.

Additionally, The American holds primary or secondary partnerships with nine bowls for the final year of its current six-year cycle, ensuring multiple annual matchups against the nation’s top conferences and providing desirable postseason destinations to member institutions.

CONFERENCE PROFILE

SUNBELT CONFERENCEWith each passing season, the Sun Belt Conference continues to challenge itself, and its competitors, in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Not content with being simply the youngest football conference in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the conference has shown that it can rise each and every season that comes along. And since the birth of the league as a FBS member in 2001, the evidence is clear that the conference is indeed rising above competitors and peer conferences.

The league features 12 teams - Appalachian State University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Arkansas State University, Coastal Carolina University, Georgia Southern University, Georgia State University, University of Louisiana, University of Louisiana-Monroe, University of South Alabama, University of Texas Arlington, Texas State University and Troy University.

The Sun Belt has earned due respect in the FBS over the last several years by consistently beating teams from peer conferences, winning bowl games and upsetting Power Five teams. In fact, the 2018 football season is direct evidence of the Sun Belt’s success as the conference broke its record for non-conference wins in a single season. The 24 total wins eclipsed the previous mark of 22 set in 2016. Additionally, the Sun Belt’s 21 regular season non-conference wins broke

the record of 19 that was set in 2013. The Sun Belt also had the best non-conference win percentage of any Group of Five Conference this past season.

Individual opportunities also extend beyond the league. The Sun Belt had 40 players on active NFL rosters during the past season, with representation on 23 of 32 NFL clubs. The league recently became one of seven conferences nationwide to have back-to-back first-round selections in the NBA Draft when Louisiana’s Elfrid Payton went No. 10 overall to the Orlando Magic and Georgia State’s R. J. Hunter was the No. 28 pick of the Boston Celtics the following year. The Sun Belt has gone 11-6 in bowl games the past three years, which makes the Sun Belt’s winning percentage the best among all conferences. In fact, over the past four years no one ranks higher in bowl winning percentage than the Sun Belt.

Just as important as on-field success, the Sun Belt’s commitment to academic excellence remains a league symbol. The league’s record book for grade point averages and academic honors is a constantly-changing document, seemingly with each year’s success outdoing the previous year. This past spring, a record 23 league programs were recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom, with those teams earning NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR scores in the top 10 percent nationally. It was the fourth consecutive year the Sun Belt has broken or tied its record for teams honored.

With the departing of longtime commissioner Karl Benson, the Sun Belt is now being guided by Keith Gill. Gill is an Orlando, Fla., native and has earned a tremendous reputation throughout his athletics career. He was also tabbed as the 2015 Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by NACDA, while at the University of Richmond.

EXPLORIA STADIUM

INAUGURAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME

Exploria Stadium is the new home of the Cure Bowl. The 2019 Cure Bowl will be the first non-soccer event to be held at Exploria Stadium since it opened in March 2017.

Exploria Stadium is home to Orlando City of Major League Soccer (MLS), Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The 25,500 seat soccer-specific stadium is located in the heart of Downtown Orlando and was the first MLS stadium to open with five consecutive victories.

Exploria Stadium was 100 percent privately funded at a cost of $155 million. It features a 360-degree lower bowl, North America’s first safe-standing supporters’ section – dubbed “The Wall” – and a four-sided canopy roof to keep the noise in and weather out. In Section 12, there are 49 rainbow-colored seats to memorialize the victims of the tragedy at Pulse Night Club. The stadium also houses the Club’s Front Office.

To date, the stadium has hosted the U.S. Men’s National Team, 2017 NWSL Championship, NCAA Women’s College Cup, 2018 MLS Combine, Florida Cup and 2018 SheBelieves Cup. The venue is set to host its first non-soccer event, the Cure Bowl, on December 21, 2019.

INTERVIEWS Participating schools are asked to make their players and coaches available to the media throughout bowl week. Interview availability and practice schedules for players and coaches will be supplied by each school’s media relations department. Orlando Sports Foundation (OSF) will do its best to provide updated practice information, but please utilize each school’s media contacts as your definitive source for this information.

POST GAME INTERVIEWS Each team will receive a 10-minute cooling off period. Following the 10-minute cooling off period, the head coach and at least one player from the runner-up team will be made available in the Media Interview Room (located in the south end of the stadium). After the runner-up team’s appearance, the winning head coach and at least two (2) players will be available. One (1) of the players will be the game’s Most Valuable Player. No interviews are permitted on the field after the game, with the exception of the CBS Sports Network broadcast and live radio with contracted broadcast rights.

Each school’s media relations director should notify Nate Blythe of their school’s post-game interview policy as it pertains to locker rooms. If a team’s locker room is not open for post-game interviews, school and bowl officials will work to determine the best location for breakout interviews.

CREDENTIALS, PRESS & TV / PHOTO Members of the media who wish to cover the Cure Bowl may apply for credentials by visiting the Media page at CureBowl.com or going to SportsSystems.com/curebowl. Since media workspace is tight at Exploria Stadium, OSF will ask the media relations directors of the participating schools to review the list of applicants on all credentials requests with applications subject to final approval by the OSF Staff. The deadline to apply is date Friday, December 13.

If you do not pick up your credential prior to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, they will be available at Media Will Call at the stadium starting at 11:00 a.m. If you have been approved for a parking pass, then you MUST pick it up prior to arriving at Exploria Stadium.

WILL CALL/MEDIA ENTRY Credentials not picked up from media registration will be available at Media Will Call located at Exploria Stadium. The booth will open three hours before kickoff at 11:00 a.m.

PARKING A limited number of parking passes are available. Parking passes may be applied for during the credential application process.

FREQUENCY COORDINATION It is a policy for the Cure Bowl that you must frequency coordinate all wireless devices used anywhere on the stadium property whether it be pregame, during the game or postgame. Coordination includes all microwave transmissions, wireless microphones, IFB, two-way radios, etc., exclusive of cell phones. An email reminder will be sent to all credentialed media with the information of the GDC.

MEDIA HOTEL The media hotel for the Cure Bowl is the Lowes Sapphire Falls Resort. The room rate for approved media staying at the hotel is $130/night. For reservation information please contact Nate Blythe at [email protected]. Deadline to reserve a room in the media block is Friday, December 13.

LOEWS SAPPHIRE FALLS RESORT 6601 Adventure Way Orlando, FL 32819 (407) 503-5000

INTERNET/STATISTICS The press box at the Exploria Stadium is equipped with wireless internet and wired ethernet connections at each seat. Media will be given a passcode for wireless use on gameday. If a hardline connection is required please contact Nate Blythe at [email protected]. Statistics will also be accessible from any laptop in the pressbox. A website will be distributed prior to the game for those interested.

TELEVISION The Orlando Sports Foundation has partnered with CBS Sports Network to broadcast the Cure Bowl. CBS Sports holds the national television broadcast rights for the contest.

RADIO Each participating institution may originate a non-exclusive broadcast of the bowl game for distribution to its regular season terrestrial network. Space has been reserved and as a courtesy, phone lines (ISDN, Dry, Pair, etc.) for the network’s broadcast will be offered. Billing will be at the current AT&T rate. The exclusive contractual rights to national live radio, satellite and internet broadcasts of the bowl game outside of the local markets has yet to be determined.

MEDIA GUIDES It is requested that the sports information department ship 50 regular season media guides and 125 post season media guides to Orlando Sports Foundation / UCF EDC, 36 West Pine St., Orlando, FL 32801

MEDIA ATTENDING TEAM THEME PARK VISITS Media members are often eager to cover team theme park visits, however, all three of Orlando’s major theme parks require each media member to have an assigned escort before entering the parks. Please contact the park(s) in advance through their media relations person for access. OSF involvement with these visits at bowl time is very limited.

TEAM PRACTICE SITES Leading up to the game, teams will be designated to practice at one of three locations that will be determined and announced during bowl week:

THE CANCERASSASSIN91 CENTS ON EVERY DOLLAR RAISED GOES TO FIGHT CANCER.

That’s what the Breast Cancer Research Foundation calls doing what’s right. There’s no time to lose in the battle with breast cancer. Delivering funding to the researchers on the front lines of the battle is critical. Local Research Team Leader, Annette Khaled, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences College of Medicine, University of Central Florida. Her team is already putting funds to work right here in Central Florida on cutting edge research for curative therapy.
