NEWSLETTER10 AUGUST 2018 | VOLUME 42 NO. 24 TERM 3 - WEEK 3 - 2018
Year 9 Camp: The “Tradition” continues and from all reports all students were in good spirits and thoroughly enjoyed their Southern Highlands and ski-field adventure. I was fortunate to spend some time with them at the farm, near Picton, last Wednesday evening. I would have to say that they were really enjoying their time and have entered the entire trip with good spirits. It has been a most worthwhile and interesting educative experience for them. No doubt they were very tired when they arrived home yesterday. I‘d like to thank Mr Grant Eirth, Fr Pete and staff for all the work and energy they have put into this event.
Year 12 Trials: The HSC Trials began this week and staff members have indicated that our Year 12 students have started confidently. The exam period continues through next week. It is great to see students working together in small groups sharing their learning with each other, and I have been amazed at the level of focus and energy our Year 12 students are displaying at present. We wish them the very best as they continue through this exam period.
Rest in Peace: It is with great sadness that we pray for the repose of the soul of Mr Paul Carroll, younger brother of our College Chaplain Fr Pete Carroll, who passed away last weekend after a long battle with cancer. Paul was 56 years old. We pray for Paul, his wife Deanne and their two sons and the wider Carroll family in this time of deep grief. May Paul rest in the peace of Christ.
Reminder: Please be reminded that we are celebrating our 40 years with a Mass and BBQ on Sunday 9 September. Please refer to page 11 for more details on this special event.
The Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillopMary MacKillop was born in 1842 in (Fitzroy) Melbourne (Australia) and died on 8 August 1909. Mary MacKillop at the age of 25 took her vows and the religious name, “Mary of the Cross”. In doing so, she founded the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Soon after taking her religious vows, Mary MacKillop established schools. Within 5 years of taking her vows and founding the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Mary had established over 30 schools in South Australia and over 100 women had joined the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Mary MacKillop was very conscious of the plight of the poor and needy. She worked with families who lived in isolated areas of Australia. As a result, Mary MacKillop pioneered a new form of religious life in Australia and commenced a “system” of “Josephite” schools that would provide education, especially for the children of the poor. In 1873, Pope Pius IX gave Papal approval for the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Even today, many Australians can say that they too have felt the impact of the enormous work started by St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop), having been educated or cared for by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. She was noted for her trust in the providence of God and miracles of healing have been attributed to her. She was declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI on 17 October 2010. Mary MacKillop is also one of our College House Patrons!
URGENT HELP STILL NEEDED – COLLEGE CANTEENDear Parents and Caregivers – we have experienced a significant drop in the amount of parent support in the canteen this year as the result of some long term families leaving the College, so we are struggling to meet the student canteen demands on a daily basis. I therefore appeal to any parent, grandparent or caregiver who has some time and is willing to help out in the canteen to help alleviate this situation. It is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in the College and it would be a great support to our Canteen Manager, Cathy Rogan, and the students. Please contact Julie Fletcher at [email protected] if you would like to help.

Students Leaving College Premises
In recent times, there has been an increase in the number of students leaving
the College grounds after school and going to the Engadine Shopping Centre
before returning to catch their bus. Students are not permitted to do this.
The exception is Friday afternoon when students finish school at 2.30 pm.
From Monday - Thursday, all students who catch buses home are expected to
remain on the College premises, under the supervision of staff, until their bus
arrives. Students will be reminded next week of this expectation, and that the
consequence of not meeting this expectation has always been, and will continue
to be, a Tuesday afternoon detention.
Term 3 Staff Day
A reminder that the Staff Development Day for Term 3 is being conducted on
Friday 28 September. As stated in the previous newsletter, this day will provide
a wonderful opportunity for staff to enhance their own faith and spirituality, so
that we can better guide your children on their journey.
Please mark this date in your calendars and make any necessary arrangements
for the supervision of your children, as it is a pupil free day.

Dance Eisteddfod | Mrs Grainne Harris
This week St John Bosco College attended the St George
Education Eisteddfod at Hurstville. It was an early start with
twenty five girls showing great enthusiasm for the day ahead.
We entered six routines - junior jazz, junior lyrical, junior
contemporary, senior jazz, senior lyrical and senior
contemporary. The girls received two second places, one third
place and two highly commended awards. These results were
fantastic amongst some amazing competition from other
schools.
Thank you to Ms Lauren from Engadine Dance Academy who
has been running dance during Friday afternoon sport; you are
a kind, sincere and inspirational dance teacher. Thank you to all
the students and dance schools that loaned costumes to our
girls to use, particularly KRS dance. A huge thank you must go
to Erin Gannon and Katarina Papadakis for coming with us to
help the students with hair and makeup, giving up one of their
study days during the trials. Finally, thank you to the many
parents who came to watch their girls dance, I know they really
appreciated it and to Mrs Jordan for helping out on the day.
Congratulations girls!

IMPROVING HANDWRITINGDespite the increasing use of technology, legible handwriting is still an important skill. It is not impossible to
improve the legibility of your handwriting. In order to do so, however, regular practice is required.
There are four elements to legible handwriting:
1. letter formation
2. size of letters
3. alignment of letters
4. spacing between words.
An effective way to begin improving your handwriting is to initially concentrate on individual letters. You need
to practise writing the letters of the alphabet each day, taking care to form the letters properly. Start with
lower case letters and write each letter at least six times. The number of letters you are able to practise each
day will depend on the time available to you. Writing every letter in the alphabet six times should take less
than five minutes.
While practising each letter, it is necessary to concentrate on letter formation and size, and aligning the letters
correctly.
The correct formation of letters is shown on this website http://hooverclass.weebly.com/letter-formation.html

Sutherland Shire Public Speaking News | Mrs Grainne Harris
On Tuesday 7 August, Emma Mills (Year 10)
represented the College in the final of the Sutherland
Shire Schools’ Public Speaking Competition at
Sutherland Entertainment Centre. Students are
required to present a prepared 4-5 minute speech
and a 3 minute impromptu speech, after having
only 3 minutes preparation. We have some amazing
speakers at the College who attended several rounds
of heats in this competition, with congratulations
going to Emma, as she did a remarkable job of
representing the College in what is a quite difficult
event. The adjudicating panel made special mention
of Emma’s speech in their feedback, noting that it had
positively impacted the audience in a meaningful way,
prompting them to think about our actions in society
and our ever increasing global community.
Well done Emma Mills!
