Did you know?Achievement Training Limited is a private training organisation located in the city centre and offering a wide range of flexible educational and vocational training courses to young people and adults since 1996. The Head Office is based in Norwich Union House with additional training rooms in the Lloyds Bank Building in the city centre.

ATL currently employs around 100 staff, all of whom support learners and customers in a wide variety of ways. We hold enhanced MATRIX accreditation for both internal and external Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) and are Disability Confident employers.

Message from Kathy BarnesI am delighted that you have taken this opportunity to look at the course offerAchievement Training have for 2020/21. We are incredibly proud of our centre and take great pleasure from witnessing all that students and staff achieve throughout the year. During the course we will provide qualified and experienced staff, assess learners fairly and regularly, provide encouragement and feedback on progress. Help is available to identify learning support needs and to ensure where practicable we provide additional support to help students succeed. We will build employability and life skills into the course, to ensure that learners have the best chance of progressing to employment and/or further study. Students can access learner support services if they need them, such ascareers guidance, student funding advice and counselling. Achievement Training will keep schools, parents/carers informed of progress.I look forward to working with your students next year.

It is one of the main reasons learners give when they explain why they enjoy and make good progress in learning.Just under half of all learners at ATL go on to achieve at successively higher levels of ATL courses or elsewhere.

ATL’s apprentices benefit from a curriculum that is built on close and productive relationships with public-and private-sector employers in the region. Adult learners and trainees also benefit from good contact with employers, such as additional opportunities for industry-specific training and/or work experience. ATL learners feel safe and are treated fairly by college staff. They are attentive and keen to learn. They are consistently respectful of others and behave well.”

Learner SupportATL’s focus is aimed at providing a learning environment where learners feelsafe and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Our Learner Support Manager supports the health and well-being of all ourlearners throughout their time with us and our designated safeguarding teamensures all colleagues are appropriately trained with specialist knowledgeincluding Prevent, mental health, substance misuse and safeguarding. As wellas offering first line support to help keep our learners safe, we provide pastoralsupport for any difficulties learners may be experiencing in or outside of theireducation. Working in partnership with multi-agency organisations throughoutthe Devon & Cornwall area, we have over 20 years of experience dealing withthe kind of difficulties that can have a negative effect on learners and proventrack record in supporting them to overcome obstacles to success.

What you will learn This qualification has been specifically designed to develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment within an Animal Care setting. The programme covers a wide range of skills, including: promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals, deliver basic treatments to animals, select and prepare accommodation for animals, control and restrain animals, prepare andprovide feed and water to animals and provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals.

Ideal if You wish to gain a practical qualification in Animal Care through vocational study and have an interest in moving into employment in one of the following sectors; kennels and catteries, breeding, training, preservation or retail of animals and related care products. The structure of this qualification provides learners with the flexibility to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway.

What to expect You will learn in our training centre within one of our fully equipped classrooms with access to our many onsite animals, including ferrets, hamsters, degus, geckos, stick insects and many many more. For each unit your assessor observes and asks questions as you perform tasks to assess your practical, animal handling skills. Your understanding of theory will be carried out within the classroom.

What next On completion of this qualification, you can progress onto a Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care. Or you could move into employment as an Animal Care Worker within a range of settings, including Kennels or Catteries, Pet shops, Zoos, Veterinary Practices, Welfare centres and Riding stables.

Animal Care Field tripsEvery year we go on a number of trips throughout your course, including visiting places such as Dartmoor Zoological Park, The National Marine Aquarium as well as a number of local farms. Wider curriculum activities visitors come from organisations such as the RSPCA, Animal Shelters and Birds of Prey Specialists. These visits will inspire you to explore the many different types of job roles in the sector as well as supporting your study.

Work Placement and Hours Students are required to complete 150 hours at a good quality work placement, to enhance their knowledge and skills across the variety of vocational roles such as animal care assistants, zoo keeper assistants, pet retail assistants and to develop employability skills.

What it feels like to be a student Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

“I just completed a Level 2 Animal Care course and can’t recommend everyone enough! Tutors are amazing, the facilities are brilliant and the support system in place is outstanding! I can’t wait to start Level 3 next month”.

Students come from a variety of schools across Plymouth, they all help each other out and develop a really good bond over the year, encouraging each other to achieve. Most students never want to leave, and move onto higher-level courses.

Salary and Career expectationsAs a qualified Animal Care Worker, you can expect, on average, a starting salary of £13,500 and can go up to £22,000, when you have gained experience within your specific sector. Professional careers can exceed salaries of £50,000 or more. Students have opportunities to progress into employment or to move onto the advanced level qualifications, such as the Diploma in Work Based Animal Care Level 3 or the Advanced Technical Certificate in Animal Management Level 3.

You could study a course such as an Animal Management Foundation Degree at University. On completion, With experience, you could become a supervisor or manager or work self-employed. Jake Furze from Vospers of Plymouth, came into the centre and spoke to the group about progressing into a career in the Business sector, talking about the huge variety of different roles and the range of salaries we can expect as well as roles within Vospers including typical work duties. Vospers recruit apprentices’ and we were able to find out how and when to apply.

Work placementsAll learners are encouraged to complete a number of hours at a good quality work placement, to enhance their knowledge and skills in the business industry. The tutor will support you to find a placement as we have very good established links with lots of local businesses.

What it feels like to be a student Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students with a dedicated tutor. Employability Skills at Entry 2, Entry 3 and Level 1 Students will work towards a level which is most appropriate for them, we aim to stretch and challenge our students to get the best from them over the year.Employability Skills will help to develop personal and work-related skills which will enable students to progress into further learning or supported employment as well as enhancing independent living skills. Throughout the course we steadily develop students’ knowledge, understanding and awareness of the need to operate safely in the work environment. We provide opportunities for experiential learning and provide a basic understanding of industrial practice through performing routine tasks.

Foundation LearningEntry LevelFoundation Learning is specifically aimed at young people with mild ormoderate learning difficulties and or disabilities

There are 3 optional pathways to choose from:

Animal Care Practical small animal care skills Level 1

Ideal if you have an interest in animal care as an area of employment and want to develop practical skills in this area. For learners interested in working in animal care, this qualification provides a practical introduction. Learners will gain work-related skills in the area of farm animal care, gain insight into core activities within the sector, and prepare for further training. Learners will complete this qualification with a good understanding of, how to assist with the care of animals, including relevant animal welfare legislation, minimising stress and injury to the animals, and keeping people and animals safe whilst working. The principles of animal care, including monitoring the health of animals, providing feed and water, and workplace health and safety requirements.

Child CareCaring for a children Entry 3 and Level 1

Ideal if you wish to develop the basic skills needed to care for a baby or young child. This qualification gives you skills in the following areas: setting a routine, healthy lifestyles and the importance of play and learning. Introduction to Health and Social Care Level 1 is ideal if you’re hoping for a career in health and social care or children settings and are new to this subject. This course covers the basic knowledge you’ll need and can build upon to give you a really good foundation to build upon. This qualification can help you get started in a wide range of health and social care roles.

ICT Level 1 Ideal if you require a basic level of skills and knowledge that could lead to further education in IT or related areas and can provide the confidence to work effectively with ICT and deal with tasks that are straightforward or routine. This qualification will give you some basic IT and computer skills required to progress onto higher IT courses. You will have the opportunity to learn: basic Word processing, basic Presentations and basic Spreadsheets.

Wider Curriculum activitiesWider curriculum activities take place including independent living skills, cooking, shopping and using public transport. Learners are encouraged and supported to complete a number of hours at a good quality work placement, to enhance their knowledge, skills and experience. We have a wide range of local businesses and organiastion’s who support our students.

What it feels like to be a student Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students, with a dedicated tutor. Class group sizes average 10 students, with a dedicated tutor and additional support, the staff to student ratio is very high. Additional support staff are on site such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

National Express and Megabus coaches travel to Plymouth coach station from many areas of the UK. ATL is less than five minutes from the Brettonside coach station.

By Car:If you are travelling via car, enter the postcode PL1 2AD into your SatNav. This will take you to a public car park near to ATL. We are located on the other side of Royal Parade just on the roundabout next to H.Samuel. Should this car park be full there is ample parking in Drake Circus Shopping Centre, this is located on St Andrew St, Plymouth PL1 1EA, if you park there and walk through the shopping centre and head towards Old Town Street we will be on your right just on St Andrews Cross roundabout.
