Since 1982, The Dental Foundation of Oregon, the charitable arm of the Oregon Dental Association, has been working to improve the oral health of Oregonians.

Our mission: Improving oral health for Oregon’s children. We believe every child in Oregon deserves to receive quality dental care and that children and their parents should understand the importance of good oral hygiene.

To achieve our vision, we invest in these primary strategies:

� Eliminate the economic, cultural and geographic barriers to dental care by taking care and education directly to children with the Tooth Taxi mobile dental clinic.

� Support non-profit dental programs that provide oral health education and dental care through DFO Community Grants.

� Educate the public about the oral health crisis in Oregon, promote the importance of good oral health and encourage volunteerism in the dental community.

We are pleased to present the 2009 Annual Report with our “Taking it to the Streets” theme that recognizes the first full-year of service for the Tooth Taxi mobile dental clinic.

An innovative partnership with OEA Choice Trust and ODS, the Tooth Taxi exceeded our expectations in 2009 helping over 4,700 students and delivering $1,158,675 in donated dental care. The Tooth Taxi was front page news in many communities, helping to raise awareness of the dental crisis in Oregon and promoting a positive message about the importance of good oral hygiene.

We were able to do this important work because of our outstanding dental team, led by Dr. Weston W. Heringer, Jr., and the support of over 200 volunteers. We are pleased to share some Tooth Taxi stories and photos of volunteers in this report.

DFO also achieved a milestone in 2009 passing the one million dollar mark in our Community Grant program. We were pleased to provide grants to fifteen non-profit dental programs that helped address serious dental needs of children in communities across the state.

We are very thankful for our donors and volunteers whose support made it possible for us to do this work in 2009, and we remain committed to “taking it to the streets” in 2010 so that one day all Oregon children will have a healthy smile.

2009 Annual Report

2009 was a remarkable year of achievement for the Tooth Taxi, completing its first full year of operation taking dental care and oral health education to underserved children throughout Oregon.

The result of a unique partnership with the Dental Foundation of Oregon, OEA Choice Trust and ODS, the Tooth Taxi visited 52 schools/communities, helped over 4,700 students and smashed the million dollar milestone by delivering $1,158,675 in donated dental services.

Spending up to a week at a school, the incomparable Tooth Taxi team of Dr. Weston Heringer, Jr., DMD, Mary Daly, program manager, and dental assistants James

Olcott and Stephanie Vogl, EFDA, provided comprehensive and preventive dental services such as screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, fillings, crowns and minor oral surgery, and they delivered in-classroom oral health education.

With two dental chairs on the van, there were ample opportunities for volunteer dental professionals to serve, and they did, along with many members from the community. Turn the page to read some stories of Tooth Taxi visits during the year and to see our list of community volunteers.

with a badly infected tooth. “Sunshine” is

kid-friendly code for the need to extract

a tooth. Unaware she even had a tooth

pulled, the child left with a happy smile.

dentists from the Southwestern Oregon

Dental Society we screened 116 students

and provided comprehensive care to

44 students delivering $32,038 in free

services.

for the most diverse

encompassing 39

different languages.

With the help of

our school partners

and many dental volunteers, including a group of

hygiene students from Pacific University, we screened

348 students, treated 55 students on the van and

delivered $29,309 in donated dental services.

lOCateD in the valleY between the rugged Elkhorn

Mountains and the jagged, snowy Wallowa Mountains, Baker City

is on the historic Oregon Trail. The Tooth Taxi parked at Brooklyn

Elementary and with students coming from several schools in the

area, we screened 132 children, provided oral health education to

over 200 and treated 78 children on the van delivering $35,663

in donated dental services.

low birth weight because the child’s mother was fighting

periodontal infection during her pregnancy. With support

from a DFO grant, the Virginia Garcia Dental Clinic in

Cornelius, Oregon developed the OB

Baby Dental Project to provide dental

screenings, treatment and education

to at-risk, uninsured pregnant women

and their families. The program has

been an outstanding

success, reducing the

number of low weight

and premature babies delivered at the

clinic. “Through our valued partnership

with The Dental Foundation of Oregon,

we are able to help women improve

their own oral health, the overall health

of their newborn infants and the oral

health of their other children,” said

SalemBOYs & girls CluB OF salem, mariOn anD POlk COuntiesBarriers to care can be economic, cultural

and geographic. That is why the Salem area

Boys & Girls Club wanted to purchase a

van for their Health & Dental Service Clinic.

Their new 2010 Toyota Sienna is brightly

decorated with smiling faces of children, and

it has already helped transport over 2,000

children to the clinic for dental sealants,

cleanings, fluoride treatments and dental education. “Many of our parents just

can’t get their children to the clinic, so we really needed a van to make sure

that children who really needed care the

most are getting it,” said Jodi Loper, Dental

Center Director, “Thanks to support from

DFO we were able to get additional funds

and secure the van.”

MedfordCOmmunitY health Center Thirteen-year-old James had never seen

a dentist. When he was screened through

a school-based visit sponsored by the Community

Health Center his family was stunned to learn he had

more teeth infected with caries than he had sound

teeth. He was referred for a comprehensive physical

exam because his oral infections could have led to

other more serious problems. With support from DFO,

the program has helped over 2,000 students in Eagle

Point, Butte Falls and Prospect School District.

In 2009, DFO provided Community Grants totaling $56,300 to 15 non-profit organizations to help over 16,000 children receive needed dental care and oral health education. Since 1982, DFO has given over one million dollars to dental programs and helped over 250,000 individuals in communities across Oregon.

We saw improvement in our investment fund during the year consistent with the overall returns in the market and finished the year with a $584,082 gain in the fund. DFO invests in a fund under management of the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF).

DFO revenue including contributions, special events and the annual campaign was $335,450 and administrative expenses for fund-raising, marketing, investment expenses and foundation management were $255,410.

Our Children

Tooth Taxi program funds are held in a restricted fund separate from the DFO Endowment and DFO takes no fees for the program. Annual operating expenses excluding depreciation were $390,186 in 2009, our first full-year of operation. 2009 revenue including grants, donations, fund interest and insurance reimbursement was $294,096.

We were pleased to receive many first-time donations and grants from the dental community, individuals and Oregon’s leading foundations and companies who are all recognized in the donor section of this report.
