    People rely on fire and

    smoke detectors to help

    keep them safe in their

    homes. Though fire and smoke

alarms are effective, a firm fire

safety plan that will keep every-

one calm should a fire occur

could mean the differencebetween life and death.

    The U.S. Fire Administra

tion says that more than 3,500

Americans die each year in fires,

    while roughly 18,300 more men,

    women, and children are injured

    each year. Cooking accounts for

    the greatest percentage of resi-

    dential fires, followed by arson.

Dryer vent fires are also a big

    concern. FEMA says that smoke,

rather than the fire's flames, isresponsible for 75 percent of all

    deaths by fire.

    In addition to physical

    injury and material damage, fires

can cause a host of other prob-

    lems. Psychological distress,

    monetary damages, and loss of

pets may come with fires. Loss of

    irreplaceable personal items is

    also a concern. Although fires

    can be devastating, they're also

    highly preventable, and smoke

alarms and a home fire safety

    plan are two precautionary

    measures everyone should

    take.Creating an evacuation plan

    doesn't have to be complicat-

ed. Such a plan can be estab-

lished in a few minutes and

    then reinforced through prac-

tice every so often to keep

everyone fresh on what to do.

Begin by assessing the layout of

the home. Figure out the two

    best exits from the home.

If your home doesn't have two

doors, invest in a fire ladder sothat one of the windows can be a

    point of exit.

Know how to gain access to the

exits, including the best path to

take to avoid injury. It's a good

idea to consider a few different

    scenarios. A kitchen adjacent

    to the upstairs staircase may

    become engulfed in flames and

make exit by way of staircase

    impossible. Just because you have

    doors to the outside doesn't

mean they'll present the besttype of exit.

Sketch out the layout of the

    home and the escape plan.

Smoke can make it difficult to

know up from down. Be sure

    everyone can reach the exits

even if vision is obstructed. Try it

    with your eyes closed.

    Check fire alarms routinely,

    and change batteries at least

    every year.

Make sure windows can be eas-

ily opened if they are an exitpoint.

Make note of who will be help-

ing children or the elderly out of

    the home.

    Establish a place where the

    family will meet outdoors. This

area should be far enough away

Establish a home fire safety plan

Keeping family members safe from fire involves establishing a fire safety plan.

If you dont have an IRA, I

can only think of a few rea-

    sons why you dont. First,

    maybe you couldnt afford to

fund one each year. Or theopposite, you made too much

    money and you participated in

    an employer-based retirement

    plan, rendering you ineligible

for an IRA. Perhaps you didnt

want to tie up your money

until age 59 , or you really

    didnt need the tax deduction.

A Roth IRA would be a good

alternative if you were to forgo

    the deduction, still allowing

    you to enjoy the tax-deferred

    growth with no mandatory dis-

tribution at age 70. Thereare Spousal IRAs and Spousal

Roth IRAs, and in the past

    some people took advantage of

    Educational IRAs. Maybe you

    rolled-over your 401K plan

into an IRA, aptly named a

    Rollover IRA. Maybe some-

one died and left you an inher-

    ited IRA? Some self-employed

    people and their employees

take part in a SEP (Simplified

    Employee Pension) IRA or a

    SAR (Salary Reduction) SEP

IRA. The bottom line is thatIRA is an abbreviation for

    Individual Retirement

    Account and as the headline

asks, if you have one, why not

    a JRA?

    Id like to examine the

    question a little further, assum-

ing that the IRA holder is

    married. What happens to

your IRA after you die? If you

leave it to your spouse, he or

she can roll it over into his or

her own IRA if the decedent is

under 70 . If the minimumdistributions were already ini-

    tiated, the surviving spouse

would roll it into an Inherited

    IRA and continue taking the

    minimum required distribu-

tions. If left to a child, then

    the term Stretch IRA comes

    into effect, allowing taxes to

    be postponed while the mini-

    mum distributions continue

    with the childs life expectan-

    cy calculation. Of course, that

child gets to name its own

beneficiary for the IRA and ifit is to its own child, the IRA

    can be stretched-out over the

    next generation, as well.

However, in my 31 years in

    this business, I cant remember

    a single child stretching the

    IRA to the grandchildren of

    the original owner. No, out-

side of the spouses, the kids

    usually cash-out the IRA and

    pay the taxes because they

have their own bills, car pay-ments, mortgages, or college

    tuition for their own children

    to pay for.

But, might there be a bet-

ter way to handle your IRA?

    Answer: Yes! Why not modify

your IRA into a JRA? Thats

    right; modify your Individual

    Retirement Account into a

    Joint Retirement Account as

    soon as possible! Let me

explain Your IRA doesntneed to provide benefits to

    only you, the account holder.

Lets think about this for a

    moment. What would happen

to you or your spouse if he or

she survived you and your IRA

    was exhausted? It appears to

me that you might be out of

    income before youve even

    died and your spouse would

    definitely be out of income

    after your death, regardless of

    his or her longevity!

    But wait. If you could

    guarantee that the income

would never run dry or be

diminished in any way for the

rest of your life and your

    spouses lifetime, in essence

    youve just created a JRA!

Thats right one IRA andtwo incomes guaranteed for

    both the husbands and wifes

    entire lifetimes! So the hus-

    bands IRA could be protected

    for the wifes ultimate benefit

and the wifes IRA could be

    protected for the husbands

    lifetime benefit, simultaneous-

    ly! This is particularly attrac-

tive when one spouses IRA is

    significantly larger than the

others IRA. Imagine creatinga pension-like income for

joint lives from a single IRA,

    while still retaining access to

    the principal! Everyone needs

to learn how to do this!

    And there is more! Lets

    assume that the husband

    worked for 40 years, amassing

a $1 million IRA while his

wife worked in the home rais-

    Recently a patient

    referred me to Dr.

    Michael F. Roizen, MD,

who wrote a book called RealAge. The book provides

    insight into how to calculate

    ones lifespan according to

    lifestyle, eating, exercising, etc.

    The Centers for Disease

    Control conducted a study at

    Emory University that showed

    that people with gingivitis

    (bleeding, swollen, or inflamed

    gums) and periodontitis (gum

disease that causes loss of jaw-

bone around teeth) had a 23 to46 percent higher mortality

rate than those who did not

    have these problems. These

    conditions are linked to

    increased rates of cardiovascu-

    lar disease, stroke, and infec-tions.

    Dr. Roizens book states:

    Flossing your teeth can make

    your arteries stronger and helps

    keep your immune system

    young. The same bacteria that

    cause gum disease also trigger

    the immune response

    inflammation that causes

    arteries to swell. The swelling

    of arteries results in constric-

tion (narrowing) and decreasedblood flow that in turn leads to

    cardiovascular disease. Other

    studies have shown that gum

    disease leads to higher white

    blood cell counts, indicating

    that the immune system is

    under high stress. Poor oral

    hygiene and increased tooth

loss are important signs of this

risk. It is calculated that lifes-

pan can increase by over six

    years by maintaining oralhygiene!

    Xylitol is a sugar alco-

    hol that is commonly

    used as an artificial

    sweetener and is created from

    birch, raspberries, plums and

    corn. Xylitol is similar in

    sweetness to sugar but half

    the calories and with-

    out the common

    effects of sugar such as

    dental cavities and

    diabetes. Therefore,

    this sweetener is

    found in many human

    sugar free products,

    such as gum, candies

    or other sweets. In

    humans, this additive

    has no serious side

    effects but in dogs,

    ingestion could be

    fatal. Xylitol has also

    been suspected of

    causing toxicity in ferrets.

    Xylitol toxicity is one of

    the newer culprits for toxic

episodes in our dogs. A com-

    mon scenario is finding your

    pooch stealing a pack of

    sugar free gum. While previ-

    ously it was thought that

    only large concentrations of

    xylitol could result in prob-

lems, this may no longer be

the case. Just a few sticks of

gum ingested by a small dog

    could cause severe problems.

    The main and initial

toxic event in dogs with xyl-

    itol ingestion is hypo-

    glycemia (low blood sugar).

    What the xylitol does is

cause a rapid release of the

    hormone insulin, resulting in

    a sudden decrease in blood

    glucose. There also appears

to be a strong link between

    xylitol ingestions and the

    development of liver failure

    in dogs, which can develop

    after the initial toxic phase.

    Signs of toxicity can be

seen as quickly as 30 minutes

    after xylitol ingestion. You

    may see clinical signs of

    hypoglycemia such as: vomit-

    ing, weakness, ataxia or

    uncoordinated movements,

    depression, seizures, coma,

    and later, liver dysfunction

    and/or failure. Your dog

    could also see problems from

    ingesting just small amounts

    of xylitol. Therefore do not

    base toxicity on see-

    ing clinical signs in a

    half hour. You may

    not be in the clear

    because with smaller

    concentrations of

    xylitol, the onset of

    clinical signs could

    be delayed as much

    as 12 hours after

    ingestion.

    Since these signs can

    develop quite rapidly it is

    crucial that pet owners

    seek veterinary treatment

    immediately or contact the

    Animal Poison Control

Center. If it is soon after

your pet has eaten a xylitol-

    containing sweet or food

    and before clinical signs

    develop, your veterinarian

    may advise inducing vomit-

ing to expel the toxin and

    supportive care to monitor

    and treat the resultant low

    blood glucose and possible

    low potassium levels.

    Prevention is very

    important. Therefore be

    especially diligent in keeping

    candy, gum or other foods

    containing xylitol out of the

reach of pets. As with any

    potentially toxic substance,

    should accidental exposures

occur, be sure to contact your

    veterinarian or Animal

    Poison Control for immedi-

    ate assistance.

What is Xylitol? By Dr. Matthew KrupnickAn estimated 80 percent

    of the U.S. population has

    some form of gum disease,

    from gingivitis to advanced

    periodontal disease. So, one

of the keys to longevity is to

    floss more often. In addition,

it is recommended to get a

    dental cleaning at least every

    six months!

    Incidentally, according

to Dr. Roizen, men who have

    regular sex, a happy monoga-

    mous heterosexual relation-

ship, and who eat plenty (not

    overeating) of pizza, marinara

    sauce, and spaghetti can add

    an additional five years to

their lives. Just floss after eat-

ing and don't smoke after sex.

    Between the Health Care

    Reform being upheld by

    the Supreme Court and

the Bush tax cuts set to expire

on December 31, 2012 we are

looking at higher taxes in 2013.

    Here are some significant

    changes coming our way.

Nearly all tax brackets will be

    increasing. The lowest bracket

from 10% to 15%. The highest

    bracket from 35% to 39.6%.

    Additional 0.9% Medicare sur-

tax on earned income for taxpay-

    ers with income as follows:

    Single income over

    $200,000

Married Filing Joint - income over

    $250,000

    Married Filing Separately

    income over $125,000

    Additional 3.8% Medicare sur-

    tax on investment income

    for individuals with income above

    the same thresholds listed above.

    Investment income includes

    interest, dividends, capital gains,

    rental and royalty income, passive

    income, and net gain over

    $250,000 for single taxpayers or

    $500,000 for married taxpayers

    filing jointly of qualified personal

    residence. (The IRS will issue

    more guidance on specifically

    what income is included.)

    Preferential tax rates on

    Dividends eliminated. In 2012

individuals in the 10 and 15% tax

    bracket are taxed at 0%.

Taxpayers in the 25% bracket and

higher are taxed at 15%. Starting

in 2013 taxpayers will pay from

    10% to 39.6% on dividends,

whatever tax bracket they are in

that is the tax rate they will pay on

    their dividends.

    Long Term Capital Gains Tax

Rates will increase to from 15 to

    20%.

    The floor for deducting Medical

    expenses will increase from 7.5%

of your Adjusted Gross Income to

10%. This wont apply to seniors

    65 and older until 2017.

    The federally subsidized drug

plan costs for retirees will be non

    deductible.

    Health Spending Accounts will

    be capped at $2500.

    Starting in 2014 individuals who

do not have health coverage will

owe a penalty tax anywhere from

    $95 to $285 in 2014. But in

2016 the penalty increases to as

    much as $2085.

    Businesses with more than 50

employees will have to provide at

    least minimum essential health

    coverage beginning after

December 31, 2013 or they will

be subject to an excise tax of

$2000 per employee, and the tax

    is not deductible.

    Federal Estate Tax is currently

at five million dollars but set to

revert back to one million on

January 1, 2013. Also the Estate

tax Rate will increase from 35%

    to 55%.

    To prepare for the 2013

    income tax increases you might

    want to shift expected 2013

    income into 2012, so the

money can be taxed at todays

lower rates. For example, if you

    were expecting a bonus early

2013, you may ask for it to be

paid a few weeks earlier at the

    end of 2012.

    Are you satisfied with

    the appearance of

    the fence that sur-

    rounds your home? It's a

    question not often asked as

    fences tend to be considered

a utility for the protection of

    owed by practicality, Anello

    Fence has proven time and

again that there is indeed a

    happy medium. With dozens

    of varieties available made of

    box you currently

    have. Maybe your fence just

    needs some accenting.

Whatever the case, if you are

looking to add value to your

home, don't just stop at a

    fence. There are so many

    ornamental structures and

    fixtures that can truly make

    an impression on your home.

    Traditionally, taxpayers

    are encouraged to maximize

    their deductible expenses at the

end of the year. However in

    order to reduce their taxable

2013 in might make sense to

    hold off on some deductions

this year and save them for

    2013. For example many peo-

    ple make charitable contribu-

tions at the end of the year or

    make their January mortgage

    payment in December. It may

make sense not to do this year

so you can use the deductions

    for 2012.

It is doubtful that any sig-

    nificant tax legislation will get

signed into law until after the

    November elections. The cur-

    rent administration wants to

extend the tax cuts to taxpayers

    with income less than 250,000

    and the Republicans want to

    extend tax cuts to everyone.

    Even if the Republicans win

    the White House President

Obama would still be in office

through the end of 2012 and

    therefore most likely taxpayers

    with incomes over $250,000

will be looking at higher taxes

    in 2013.

    Everyones tax situation is

unique so make sure to consult

your CPA or tax advisor about

    your specific circumstances.

    Thanks to many customers

    and employees the food drive

    this spring was a success.

    Donations collected in the

    Lincoln Park branch were

    donated to Lincoln Park Food

    Pantry located at the

    Community Center. The dona-

    tions collected at the Montville

    office were donated to the

    Montville Kiwanis Food Pantry

    located in the Montville

    United Methodist Church.

    Monetary donations were also

    collected and were donated to

the food pantries as well. Each

    Food Pantry services residents

    from their respective town.

    During the spring and summer

    months there are fewer dona-

tions to the Food Pantries and

    with increased requests for

    assistance the shelves are

empty. Here is a small sample of

    food that was collected during

the food drive. Thank you to

    everyone who donated for

making this food drive a suc-

    cess, and for helping your

    neighbors!

    The G.F.W.C Montville

    Township Womens Club held

    its installation of new officers

Monday, May 21, 2012 at the

    Hanover Manor in East

    Hanover, NJ. The new officers

from the home so that every-

one will be safe from smoke,

    flames and falling debris. Fires

    may ignite fuel explosions, so

be sure the meeting spot is a

    good deal away.

    Children should be instructed

to run to the meeting spot

    immediately without waiting

behind for anyone to catch up.

    No one should re-enter the

    home after arriving at the

    meeting spot.

Do a few practice runs so

    everyone will be accustomed to

    getting out quickly.

While in most cases it is better

to escape and let the fire

    department extinguish a fire, in

the event of a small fire, occu-

pants may be able to stanch it

    with a personal fire extinguish-

    er. Follow the acronym PASS

to properly put out the fire:

PULL the pin in the extin-

    guisher.

AIM the nozzle or hose at the

    base of the flames.

    SQUEEZE the trigger.

    SWEEP the foam across the

fire base; do not just aim in one

    place.

    Fire safety is very impor-

    tant. In conjunction with

    smoke alarms, a fire safety

    plan can help everyone get

    out alive.

    Im always on the lookout

    for good food. Sometimes I

can find it right in my

    neighborhood, while other

times it requires a bit of travel.

But frankly, as long as the food

is up to par, a few extra miles

    means nothing to me. Thats

why when I was contacted by

Brix Tapas Bar & Grill in

    Belleville, I had no problem

    jumping on the Parkway to

    experience its unique style of

    dining.

    As its name would sug-

gest, Brix Tapas Bar & Grill is

    centered around the classical-

    ly Spanish method of dining

    called tapas. Designed to

    encourage conversation, tapas

    are small portions of delicious

foods prepared in such a way

that would make it easy for

    dinner guests to move around

    and fellowship without the

    inconvenience of a full plate

of food. Playing on this classic

    style, Brix has enhanced the

idea of tapas and created a

    menu with both large and

    small portioned dishes whose

    outstanding flavors encourage

    conversation of their own.

    Appetizers come in a

similar form to that of classic

tapas and include a wide array

    of Italian, Spanish, and

    American varieties. Our table

was served a mixture of moz-

    zarella in carrozza (essentially

    a fried mozzarella sandwich),

    stuffed clams oreganata, a

Spanish take on rice balls, and

    the ever-popular coconut

shrimp. Each had its own taste

unique to others of its kind.

The rice balls were a delicious

    surprise to me, made with

    Spanish rice and peppers

    rather than the mozzarella and

ground beef Im used to. I

    found the consistency of the

yellow rice to be an excellent

    replacement for white rice

and very well suited to the

dish. The starters were truly afantastic beginning to our

meal, and frankly, it was all I

could do not to fill up!

    As dishes were cleared

    they were replaced by larger

    entre dishes. The Brix menu

    features staples including

    pasta, pizza, chicken, and

    steak that are like the

    appetizers brought into a

    unique light. Coming from an

    Italian family, we know

    Bolognese sauce. We know it

to a degree that we would

    almost never order it outside

moms kitchen. Well, I took a

leap of faith that day and was

floored by the integrity of the

sauce. Im not saying mom has

    competition necessarily, but

    she ought to watch out

    because Brix does it right!

    What really impressed

me, however, was the fig pizza.

    Rather than a tomato based

pizza sauce, Brix uses a home-

    made creamy fig paste as

    a base sprinkled with

    caramelized onions and

Gorgonzola cheese to make apizza more exquisite than I

    have ever tasted before. The

fig pizza is truly the champion

of Brix Tapas Bar & Grill and

    most certainly worth the

drive! Also offered is full serv-

ice bar with tap and micro

    beers, along with fine wine

    and cocktails.

Brix Tapas Bar & Grill is

    located at 371 Franklin Ave.

in Belleville. Call the restau-rant for more information:

    973-751-7001. Come and

    experience a warm, friendly

    ambiance where the conversa-

tion flows and the food is fab-

    ulous.

ing their children so she neverhad the chance to build a large

IRA for herself. With a stroke

of the pen on the proper docu-

    ment, both husband and wife

    would be guaranteed a lifetime

of income that would never be

    exhausted! Further, one pro-

    gram exists in the marketplace

    today that states if either

    spouse entered a nursing

    home, the income that was

guaranteed for life would sim-ply double! Thats right! 4.5

percent for life becomes 9 per-

cent if either party enters a

    nursing home. When they

return to their own home, or

    unfortunately the funeral

    home, the monthly check

reverts back to the 4.5 percent

    minimum amount that was

    guaranteed for life initially

until, when and if, the surviv-

ing spouse enters a nursinghome and the income jumps

    back up to double again!

So you see, if you have an

old style IRA, you need to

    examine the features and ben-

efits of upgrading to a JRA! If

you would like to explore this

    concept further, please call my

office for a no cost or obliga-

    tion appointment and an

    opportunity for us to shake

hands. It is my belief thateveryone needs to examine

    the possibilities of upgrading
