Im sure many of you are familiar with the most famous Narnia book; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but how many of you realise that there are actually 7 books in the series? C.S. Lewis wrote the stories over a period of several years, the idea came from tales he made up to entertain 4 young evacuees, who were billeted in his house during WW2. In each book the children meet many characters including Mr Tum- nus the faun, Mr & Mrs Beaver and of course Aslan the lion, who helps them defeat the Queen and restore Narnia. If you want to be transported into a wonderful world where animals talk, you can fly on the back of an owl or glide on the breath of a lion, take part in fierce battles and travel with a Prince, then I definitely recommend the Chronicles of Narnia. Welcome back to our final term this academic year! We understand that times are tough at the moment but I strongly feel that with everyone in our community sticking together to support each other has made things a lot easier. I have been on-line looking at all of the learning being uploaded onto Class Dojo and I am really impressed in the quality and the quantity of learning that is happening it home. I must say it looks like you are all having fun doing the activities as well. This week the Leadership team and I met to discuss how things were progressing with regard to the children’s virtual learning- taking into consideration the feedback from parents and carers. As a result, we will be slightly adjusting the learning set on Dojos. Each class teacher has posted a letter explaining the changes on their class story but basically each subject that is set for the day will have their own PowerPoint clearly labelled with the day and subject. In each PowerPoint, the children will have a starter activity, then the main teaching with examples on how to do the skill being taught fol-lowed by a task and/or a set of challenges for the children to complete. Where it is relevant, you will also be given the answers so you can mark your child’s work or they can mark their own. This will be the usual set up of a lesson but may vary slightly de-pending on the age of your child and subject being taught. This is also how the school will take the register of the children at home. If children are not engaging by posting then we will be making phone calls to find out why. The school is still responsible for the safety and well-being of our children and we will need your help to keep us informed.

This half term our value is ‘Responsibility’ and over the course of this half term we will be looking at what responsibility is, the difference between obedience and responsibil-ity, how does confidence lead to responsibility, how to overcome barriers that might stop us from carrying out our responsibility and being independent by taking on respon-sibility without being asked! Each week I will upload a discussion or an ’assembly’ with a story for you to read and discuss with your child on Class Dojo.

We wanted to make you aware that Croydon Council have started working with ‘Peddle My Wheels’ who are based in the borough to operate their ‘Try Before You Bike’ scheme for Croydon residents and employ-ees. https://www.peddlemywheels.com/

The scheme means residents or em-ployees in the borough can try out a variety of types of bike by hiring it for a monthly fee. There is no depos-it, no fixed contract and the user just pays the monthly fee until they own it, or they cancel and return at any time with nothing more to pay. The bike is delivered directly to their door with a free cycle skills session to increase confidence. Maintenance and theft cover are available for peace of mind. Children’s bikes can be exchanged for the next size up and ‘Peddle My Wheels’ col-lect, service and sell the old bike free of charge.

In the current situation with re-strictions on public transport usage the Council feel it is appropriate to make people aware of the project and enable those who still need to get to work to do so. It also allows those who are considering getting a bike for their exercise opportunity to try one out.

Government has categorised bike shops as an essential service alongside supermarkets and pharmacies. ‘Peddle My Wheels’ continues to operate and deliver bikes to interested users with infection control process-es in place to ensure people don’t come into contact with each other. The free training session can be held at a later date.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the lunar year of the Islamic calendar. It fulfils the fourth requirement of the Five Pillars of Islam, which is ‘Sawm’ (fasting). Adult Muslims, if healthy and strong, around the world are obligated to fast for up to 30 days. They are not allowed to eat or drink during daylight hours. Fasting begins from the start of the early morning prayer before sunrise (Fajr) and car-ries on for daylight hours. Muslims will break their fast at the start of the after sunset prayer (Maghrib) with some dates and water, and then a family meal. Some

older children also choose to take part to get into the habit of fasting.

Ramadan marks the month the holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is also a time where Muslims remember the poor. Feeling hungry and thirsty helps them to understand what it is like for the people who do not have enough to eat or drink all the time. They set aside money to give to the poor.

Ramadan is also a very spiritual and reflective month for Muslims. During these 30 days, Muslims will make the effort to do more good deeds and pray more often to God. It is also an opportunity to develop self-control, as Muslims tend to leave behind and work on ridding any bad habits they may have.

To all the families in our community celebrating, Downsview Primary and Nursery School wish all you a very happy, blessed and safe Ramadan.

Keep an eye out on Dojo for some activities that we will be doing over the course of the next month.

Earth Day 2020 was held on Wednesday 22nd April. It marked 50 years of Earth Day. It first started in 1970 with twenty million people in the US (10% at the time of the then US population) taking part in street rallies to demand greater attention to the protection of the planet. It has become the world’s largest civic event and is has become a worldwide phenomenon with more than 75,000 partners in 190 countries. Over the years, this movement has led to many changes in laws to protect the environment. However, there is so much more that needs to be done to save the planet. Earth Day should be celebrated every day and every day we should take small individual actions to save our “common home”. During this difficult confinement we all have sought solace in our nearby parks, our gardens, the blooming trees of our roads, the flowers in our balcony… in nature. We all have seen beautiful encouraging signs of na-ture trying to come back to our towns and cities. Maybe nature is reaching out to help humans to get out of this mess we have created. I hope this time of enclosure will give us time to reflect and realise that we can’t go back to “business as usu-al”, and that will give us the strength and the clarity of mind to make those little changes that can save our planet and our future. We will be able to tackle climate change in exactly the same way we will beat the coro-navirus, with a collective effort and a collective will.

Six Dinner Sid My favourite book as a child was ‘Six Dinner Sid’. I still remember my teacher reading this book to me in Primary school, and now I get the pleasure of reading it to my class each year. Six Dinner Sid is about a black cat who lives with six different peo-ple on the same street. By doing so, he's able to get six different dinners every night. However, each owner thinks Sid is only their cat. All is per-fect for Sid, until the day he catches a dreadful cough. Then it is off to the vet not once, but six times. This is when Sid gets caught out, and the importance of telling the truth can become a dis-cussion. It is definitely a must read! Miss Rathod– Reception teacher & Art/DT Leader

New figures revealed on the 7th April by the Department of Transport show that only a very small proportion of people in the UK are still travelling during the lockdown period that the government have imposed during the COVID-19 outbreak. Visits to shops, museums and cafes in the UK have fallen by 85% since the coronavirus outbreak, according to data shared by Google. The government has supported Google in using data in this way. Things to talk about at home…

Have you used technology to communicate with friends or family outside of your home? If so, do you think you will con-tinue to use this after the lockdown period has ended?

What changes have your fami-ly made to reduce the amount you leave your home? Do you think you will continue with any when the restrictions are lifted?

Two things really made me smile this week... We set Year 6's a challenge to create a COVID-capsule filled with mem-ories of their time in lockdown and agreed to hide our time capsules safely away after we had finished. We laughed about how the children might come across their capsules in 20 years time (they would be 30 years old by then!!) and how amazing it would be to see what we were up to during this strange time and how much life as changed since then. I loved seeing all the different art work, leaflets, letters to themselves and even the interviews with parents they included! They are always making me proud; even via a computer screen!

Being in school has also made me smile a LOT this week! I love watching the new bonds and friendships the children are forming in school. It must be strange having lots of different year groups altogether but they have surprised me how well they have adapted and enjoy their new routines. The children have constant smiles on their faces and while I'm with them, they make me forget about everything that's happening in the world! The chil-dren have really grouped together to form a great team and I hope that the friendships they've made stay as strong when school is back to normal! They have thoroughly cheered me up!

I really miss my class and the hustle and bustle of normal everyday life. However, Lockdown has forced life to slow down, meaning there is more time to self-reflect and take care of ourselves. Not only have I made a real effort to eat healthily and do some form of exercise daily, I have had the time to pick up some old hobbies! I used to love cross stitching and have found an old pattern I had started years ago. I have also completed a few jigsaw puzzles. These activities have been great for relaxing, de-stressing and unwinding - perhaps you could give them a go?

Nursery: We think Ruby would make a fabulous Illustrator. Her artwork is always so creative and very eye catching. She pays fantastic attention to detail and produces beautiful pictures. We think Noah would be an amazing Palaeontologist. He knows so many interesting facts about dinosaurs and impresses us as he can identify lots of them by name! McKee: Ellis N is most likely to be a Palaeontologist because of his passion and knowledge for dinosaurs. He enjoys sharing information and educating other children about the facts he knows on dinosaurs. I think Cataleya JK will most likely become a teacher just like her 'Nana' because she enjoys role playing in the classroom 'teachers' and incorporates the knowledge and experience that her Grandmother has shared with her. Murphy: Nia O is most likely going to be a famous chef because she has been baking some lovely things at home such as banana bread that looked absolutely delicious. Safiya B is most likely to be a doctor or nurse for the hard working NHS because she is so good at being kind and caring for others. Butterworth: I think Elijah K will become a Palaeontologist as he knows the names of LOADS of dinosaurs and he is very good at pronouncing all their names correctly. He has even corrected me a few times! He also knows lots of facts about dinosaurs and he really enjoyed sharing his knowledge about dinosaurs during our Dinosaur topic with the rest of the class. I think Norah will become a Fashion Stylist because she enjoys dressing the bears in different outfits and really thinks about what she will dress them in. I remember her telling me that "the bear needs to wear white shoes to match her white dress". Donaldson: I know Jasmine would like to be an Actress or Jewellery Designer, and she definitely has the skills to be both. She’s a fantastic artist who pays a lot of attention to the detail which is a skill she’d need to act, as it’s the detail that separates the good from the great! Lili O has such a broad range of interests and skills that I can’t decided between Scientist, Gymnast or Illustrator. She is more than capable of being all those things at the same time! She has boundless energy, natural curiosity, she’s creative and loves learning new things. She wrote a brilliant story recently and read it so beautifully that I suspect she could add Author to her list as well! Browne: Khalil has the most incredible mathematical skills and always amazes me with his rapid responses to ques-tions in our Maths lessons, which I am sure has been continuing at home too! Keeping on top of his numeracy skills as well as all other subjects means that he will have the opportunity to pursue whatever job he desires to do when he is older! I know at the moment he would love to be a Police Officer when he is older and I think he will make the most amazing one! Khalil has the upmost respect for everyone around him and he al-ways knows the difference between right and wrong! Well done Khalil you are a superstar! Juno has the most amazing creativity in all that she does! Whether this is in her wonderful stories that she writes or her beautiful pictures that she draws! She has a keen eye for detail and enjoys challeng-ing herself with adventurous vocabulary in her writing. She has been making the most delicious looking food since being at home so I think she would be brilliant at opening her own restaurant when she is older and cre-ating delicious new recipes for all her customers. I know she is passionate to become an Architect when she grows up and I think she would be fabulous at doing this too. Perhaps she could design the building that the restaurant will be in? Keep up all the incredible work, I am loving seeing it each day! Ross: I think Islam S would be an amazing Architect. He loves maths, pays phenomenal attention to detail and is so creative with a fantastic vision. He is also hard working and focused. All strengths setting him up for success in many possible fields. I think Louis I would be a fabulous Football Player. He is a fantastic leader but also works so well on a team. He always comes back from PE with an amazing amount of Dojo’s and shows a real affinity for sports. He could also be a Business Professional with his problem solving skills. He works so hard and never gives up and is so focused! Dahl: Tristan is most likely be a Palaeontologist when he grows up because he is very clever and also very adventurous. Tristan absolutely loves everything to do with dinosaurs, he is always reading non-fiction books about dinosaurs and they often appear as characters in his stories as well. I think that because Tristan knows so many facts about dinosaurs, he would be a very successful Palaeontologist! One day, he might even travel around the world teaching children fun facts about them! When Martina grows up, I think she will make a fabulous Ballerina! She is determined and always pushes her-self to achieve her goals, she is disciplined and is always making the right choices and she is hard-working- all skills that a ballerina must have. Most importantly, Martina absolutely loves to dance and get active. She loves a GoNoodle dance or a Zumba video. However, because she is so gentle and sweet, a Ballerina is a perfect type of dancer for her!

Page 10: 23rd April 2020 · more that needs to be done to save the planet. Earth Day should be celebrated every day and every day we should take small individual actions to save our “common

Wilson: Rohan would make an incredible Architect who owns his own building firm. He always puts 1 1 0% into his 3D projects and is very creative! I am always exited to see what he designs. This year alone, he has made a giant 3D recycled material spider, an impressive Viking long boat and creative costumes for theme days! I think that Amaan would make an amazing TV host! He is so animated and excited when he tells stories. He loves to talk to people and is very entertaining. All that creative energy would make you a star! Rosen: I think Lucia would make an outstanding Author. Not only does she pay great attention to detail, she knows exactly how to use vocabulary and sentence structure to create an exciting, engaging and creative story! She always is in pursuit of the most effective language and is always thinking of what would be the best adjective, adverb or verb to use for the most effect on the reader! Additionally, she often chooses her Friday ‘Golden Time’ to continue to write, constantly sharpening her skills! I think Salem is most likely to be an Explorer or an Adventurer when he grows up. His knowledge of geography, countries, maps and places is excellent. I always enjoy when he tells me facts about a place he has been to or places he has read about! When the kids are given time to read quietly to themselves, Salem often goes to the atlas section of the book corner and brushes up on his knowledge! Hamilton: I can imagine this person to be a wonderful Teacher, her thirst for knowledge is extremely impressive. She enjoys teaching others the things she has learnt and how they can overcome problems too. She is very smiley and loves to spread her joy amongst her peers. This wonderful person is…Farah. When I picture this person I imagine her to be on the West end stage. She loves to read and dive deep into a story. Plus, her dressing up is superb! This World Book Day she came dressed as the Ice Queen from Narnia, she was dressed to the nines but also told us all about who her character was and why she loved this story. I will definitely by a ticket to see this performer…Mary! Farah: Ms Ali thinks Erin is most likely to be a top Scientist when she's older. Her breadth of knowledge for all science top-ics are exceptional. Two characteristics that Erin has is curiosity and patience. She is curious about the world around her and yearns to learn what makes everything work. Her unfaltering patience, is an asset to be a suc-cessful scientist because she will be required to make discoveries, which takes time, and explain to others the process and the results. Ethan has to be the rapper - he will most definitely be in the music industry. Ethan loves to entertain others and enjoys being creative with his dance moves, his lyrics and acting skills. He is definitely a triple threat. Ethan oozes confidence in this field and I can definitely see him being famous one day and on my television screen! Ennis: Mia Chantel is most likely to be a Creative Designer. She always manages to make something incredible with paper in her free time and it always baffles me as to how she even thought of the idea. I can see Eze being a Comedian in the future. He has such a great sense of humour, I sometimes struggle to keep my composure. Bolt: I think that Macey will become a Nursery Teacher. She has first hand experience at home helping look after the twins and she has a loving and kind spirit, always willing to go that extra mile to help someone. She doesn't shy away from a challenge and always gives 100%. These are all vital skills to survive teaching. I think that Musab will be an I.T. Consultant when he grows up. He has excellent computer skills and knows how to fix any technical issues at the press of a button. Musab has been sharing his Dojo work with me via, power point and word, always putting his skills to good use. He has the will and determination to succeed in the fast paced technology world that we live in. Kenny: Billie will be a great Chef. I have had the pleasure of seeing (not yet tasted!) many of her delicious deserts and mouth watering meals. I have been impressed with the amount of love, effort and dedication she has put into her cooking. I would definitely pay to eat at your restaurant Billie! Elias will be a great professional Computer Expert. He shows a great interest in all things technological. He is often called upon, not just by his peers, but also by Ms. Lewis to fix computer problems. He takes great pride in being the class computer expert of 4Kenny. Murray: Piers will become the next Usain Bolt, if not BETTER. He has the drive, the determination and the will-ingness to persevere under difficult circumstances. He is willing to train hard and listen to instructions in or-der to better his own performance. As many athletes become positive social advocates, I believe that Piers would take this route too. Piers often can spot things that are wrong and he often tries to find a solution. He also has a kind heart for coaching and teaching others. Kainen is already an AMAZING Maths Teacher. Kainen is certainly most likely to take the route of being a Maths teacher, if not a Head Teacher. Kainen is extremely studious, yet he loves to help others learn. Wit-nessing Kainen teaching the children, I have seen him show ample patience and he always has an encouraging spirit. Hoy: I think Angel will most likely be a Teacher. She is kind, caring and so helpful to me and all of her friends. I think Yusuf will most likely be a Philanthropist with his caring attitude towards others and selflessness. In the Easter holiday, he raised money for two families, in other countries, to survive the month of Ramadan. How amazing!

Simmonds: Luisa is most likely to become an Artist. She spent much of her time during the Easter holidays drawing and painting some magnificent pieces of art work. She eloquently designed and painted her parents new co-vers for their phones, which are fabulous and her fathers was even 3D!! Ammar is most likely to become a Mathematician; either a Maths Lecturer or an Accountant because he is very quick with numbers and loves solving mathematical problems! Zaha: I think Rihan would make an excellent Astrologer or Scientist like Brian Cox because he is eager to learn all he can about the Solar System and has a brilliant scientific mind! I think Mariam would make a brilliant Artist because she is very creative and would hold amazing exhibitions all around the world! Storey: I think that Ashaaz is definitely going to be an expert Computer Programmer, when he grows up. On numerous occasions, he used his expertise and knowledge to help sort out IT issues in year 6. I especially remember when he participated in the Whitgift Project and how impressed the coordinator was with his programming skills. Ashaaaz has always said he wants to be working in the area of cyber security and we would like to wish him best of luck! Sameer has demonstrated an outstanding ability to solve the Rubix cube. Solving the Rubix cube has been a huge competition across year 6 and Sameer is the reigning champion. He can solve the cube with speed and accuracy in under a minute. I think if he continues to develop this skill he will definitely be a future Rubix Cube champion! Holmes: I am fully expecting Grace to be representing team G,B, in gymnastics, at the Olympics, when she grows up. I'll be watching out for her! She is incredibly talented and has even tried to teach me a few moves. Unfortu-nately, my limit is a cartwheel so I'll stick to teaching and leave the flips and twists to Grace! I think Jai would make an incredible Author who could illustrate his own stories/comics. He has fabulous storylines and really knows how to build suspense and be creative with language. I LOVE reading his stories (although not when he leaves me hanging at the end of a chapter!). Yet, he is great at the drawing side too... so why not just do both?! Redgrave: When Lybah grows up, I believe she could bring together lots of her amazing qualities into an exciting but ed-ucational career path. Lybah has a real love of animals and Australia! We have spent many afternoons chatting about our favourite animals and where to find them in Oz so I can imagine Lybah taking herself on lots of adventures overseas to research into exotic animals. After years in the Outback, I can see Lybah using her incredible writing skills to create some David Attenborough-’esque’ books about endangered animals and how to save them. Lybah is such a caring child and I know that she would flourish doing anything that also helps others, even our furry friends! David - Everyone in our school community knows... and loves David G. I can only imagine that David could be the future Prime Minister of this country! He has taken his Headie role very seriously and even continues to check in with me regularly through Dojos; like the true leader he is. David is the most enthusiastic child and is always eager to put suggestions forward to help those around him. Public speaking is something that David revels in and he will always throw himself at the chance to speak in assemblies and in class. In years to come, I'm sure we'll see David G's name plastered all over ballot papers... He's definitely got my vote!
