24 Mill RoadSituated just a few hundred yards from the golden sands of Dymchurch is Dry Syns, an extremely attractive, 17th Century property that gets its rather unusual name from the famous book by Russell Thorndike. “It was the look of the house that initially attracted me,” says Debbie. “It has all the charm of a 17th Century property from the front, but the back it looks almost Tudor. And inside it’s also hugely characterful and awash with lovely period features. It’s so impressive that on my initial viewing it took me only a matter of minutes to put in an offer.”

One enters this lovely home into a large and welcoming reception hall, which provides a wonderful introduction to the style and character that permeates almost every room of the house. “As well as the look of the house, another aspect that I absolutely love is the space throughout,” continues Debbie. “The huge reception room is at the front, and then that flows into the grand dining room with its beautiful inglenook fireplace, which in turn leads into the very spacious conservatory. Because the house is so large I’ve been able to run a B&B business throughout the summer months. All of the bedrooms are en suite, which is ideal, and the fact that both the beach and the open countryside are so close means that I can earn a nice little income.”

“The house was just perfect when I bought it, but the garden was in desperate need of a great deal of TLC,” says Debbie. “It took an awful lot of work to sort it out, but it’s now really lovely. It consists of around half an acre, which is sizeable for a village location, and at the back of the house, leading straight out from the conservatory is a lovely decked sun terrace and a large expanse of lawn. Because Dymchurch is situated in a bay, we have a microclimate so most of the time it’s lovely and sunny. Towards the back of the property is a huge area that I use for parking, but it has the potential to be developed as at one time planning permission was granted for a large doctors surgery.”

“I’ve love living Dymchurch,” says Debbie. “There’s a wonderful sense of community here, so everyone says ‘hello’, and there’s so much to get involved in. It also has three very nice pubs, an Indian restaurant and lots of really lovely little shops. Everything you could possibly need on a day-to-day basis is here. And if you need to go further, the M20 is just 15 minutes away and Ashford has the high-speed rail service. However, during the winter months in particular I rarely venture out of Dymchurch because all that I need is just a stroll away.”

“When you live in a property like this you are merely the custodian of the building, and I feel that I have done my very best to look after it,” says Debbie. “I have loved the space, the character and the roaring fires in the depths of winter, but it’s now time for someone else to enjoy it.”*
