27th September 2012 - Week 11 Term 3
Bike /scooter ramps
A huge thanks go to Richard Green who has made ramps for the children to use as
jumps on their scooters and bikes. They are very popular and it is great to see the
growth in skill and confidence among the children.
Shake Out- Earthquake Drill
Yesterday we took part in “Shake Out”, which was an earthquake awareness
exercise held throughout NZ at 9.26am .
The children have been taught the Drop, Cover, Hold response to an earthquake and
all the classes except Rm 2 watched a couple of YouTube clips of what to do in an
earthquake. If you want to check out the clips look up – NZ Get Thru – Kids know

We also held a fire drill last week.
School Production
This year we will not be having an all school production due to the Pohara Hall being
closed as they are awaiting an earthquake assessment.
Room 2 & 3 will hold their items in the Motupipi Hall and Room 1, 4 & 5 will use The
Playhouse. Both concerts will be held later in the term. Dates will be confirmed at
the beginning of term 4.
Bay Lit
Helen and Jude attended the Bay Lit awards night at the Mussel Inn last week. They
reported that the judges were delighted with the quantity and quality of entries from
Motupipi School’s year 5 & 6 students. ( we made up 95% of the entries) They were
impressed by the imagination of the children and their advanced understanding of what
makes a good short story effective, and the high standard of proofreading and
editing. They praised the teachers and guides who had helped the children get to this
level.
Linda Kelly, who was the judge, said she had worked
in “Writers in Schools Programmes” all over New
Zealand and she had never seen such a consistently
high standard of writing. Steve was 1st, Bonnie and
Rosie 2nd equal and Chrystal Highly Commended.
It was also great to see other winners, Laila, Gina
and Izzy, who were ex Motupipi pupils.
Tim Jones, Poet and judge of the Poetry at Bay Lit
came to school on Friday for a workshop with the
Room 1 children, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Chris Fortune: Cooking in Schools
Next term on Wednesday 24th October, we will have a visit from Chris Fortune, a
Marlborough chef, who travels around schools using a purpose built Mobile Learning
Kitchen.
Students will be involved in cooking and preparation of food, with the focus being trying
something new to their taste buds that comes from locally grown food.
Miniball
Tuesday was the last night of miniball for our yr 3-6 children.
The Kungfu Coconuts came second in the Yr 5/6 grade and the
Rockstars won their last game to take third place.

Yesterday Rosie, Chrystal, Mason and Hamish went over the hill for the B.P
Challenge. The B.P Challenge is a science challenge.
The first task was to make a Grabber, (to pick up table tennis balls),
something that we had practised at school. The Grabber had to be able to pick
up table tennis balls over a gap of two metres. We were allowed to use 12 full
sheets of newspaper, 2 cotton buds, 4 straws, 10m of tape, 4m string and 2
paper clips. Our idea was to roll the newspaper into rods, and stick them
together. To grab the ball we taped straws into a tepee shape and made a rim
out of bent paper clips. Unfortunately our Grabber on the day was too floppy
and we didn't pick up any balls.
Our second challenge was a marble tower that we had to make at school and take
to the venue. The tower had to contain two or more drops, and roll the
marble for 1m through holes worth certain points, all within 5 seconds.
The equipment we had was unlimited newspaper and tape. Our tower was working
perfectly for the week leading up to the event,
but on our first run with a judge watching, the
marble got stuck!!!
Our chances of winning were suddenly dashed.
The final mystery challenge was to create a fishing rod to catch paper fish
with little hoops on them. Each fish had point values, depending on the size
and number written on it. We scored 180 points capturing two fish, coming
fifth out of 28 teams. We all felt strongly that the day was a worthwhile
success. We definitely want to do it again next year!
B.P Science Challenge with Mason, Rosie, Chrystal and Hamish BP Science Challenge
Jodie took a team to the BP Science
Challenge at Waimea College this
Tuesday. The BP Science Challenge is a
hands-on competition where students
work as a team, using simple materials
to solve problems.
The team was selected after a series of
team challenges in class. As well as
having innovative ideas, the children
also had to be able to listen to the
ideas of others and be able to
compromise and work as part of a
team.

Well Done to Motupipi School’s Bay Lit Winners! Steve was first with his story ‘Lift Off’, Bonnie was second equal with her story ‘At Full Moon’ and Rosie was also
second equal with her story ‘The Revenge. Chrystal placed Highly Commended with her story ‘Swunk’. Well done Room One children!!! I hope you all enjoy reading them as much as the judges did.
The Revenge (Second equal) By Rosie
“Mr Smith?” I was brought back to earth by the sound of my
teacher, Mr Johnson’s loud voice.
“Yes sir,” I answered my heart sinking.
“May I ask you what the time is?”
“Two o’clock sir,” I replied.
“And what time does school finish?”
“Three o’clock sir.”
“So can you please concentrate on your work?”
“Yes sir,” I said, aware that the class’s attention was fixed on me.
It was a boiling hot day in January and the minutes were ticking by
until three. I couldn’t wait to get home. At last, after what seemed
like years, the bell rang.
I ran out of the room with my bag on my back. I got there with
moments to spare before Sarah arrived. Today was the day that I
set about scaring my older sister, Sarah. Sarah was a fifteen year
old who was very annoying. That was why I was doing it.
I went over to my cupboard and pulled out my brand new monster
costume that I had got especially for the occasion. It was a kind of
black cloak that hung about me like a black cloud. But the scariest
thing about it was its mouth. It hung open like a gaping hole in its
head.
I was sure Sarah would fall for it. I quickly checked to see if she
had come home yet. Good. She hadn’t. I put it on and checked my
reflection in the mirror. I looked very convincing. She was going to
be so scared!
Just then out of the corner of my eye I saw Sarah coming up the
drive. I raced down the stairs and hid just out of sight. I waited in
silence for about ten minutes. She still hadn’t come. I decided to go
and look outside for her. I’d only taken a couple of steps before I
heard a sound. It was a kind of groaning noise. Suddenly a thing
jumped out from behind a tree! It was greyish coloured and it looked
like a wet dishcloth. Then it happened. It looked straight at me and
I noticed that it had no eyes. I screamed in sheer horror and start-
ed shouting for Mum. My feet were glued to the ground. Then the
thing seemed to take off its head.
Underneath was…Sarah. She was laughing and laughing.
“Got you!” She said and ran inside. I groaned. Next time my
revenge would have to be better!
Lift Off! By Steve (First place getter!)
My name is Bob. I live in a house on Maple Street. It’s big, it’s scary, and creaks all the time. Sometimes even I get scared!
I’m telling you a secret that you must not tell anyone. The house is a rocket! Nobody knows this except you and me. My family doesn’t even know!
In my room there is a hidden trapdoor in the floor that leads to a secret control Room with Rocket Fuel and rockets underneath it. I had planned my trip into space very carefully. My family still doesn’t know, so that’s good. We were to leave at midnight 23rd of July, this year, and it’s the 1st already!
I woke up, feeling ready for the day ahead. I looked at the calender….. and nearly jumped out of my pants!!! 6th of July!!! Throughout that day I was itching for school to end.
I ran through the front door, puffing. “Why did you run home, Bob?” “My science class is working on an awesome project! I couldn’t wait to tell you.
It was 5:00pm when I ran up to my room and took a map of space out from under my bed. I, for about the fiftieth time, checked my route through space.
6HR 58MIN LATER
Two minutes until midnight. It felt like two years! Earlier I had taken my Mum, Dad, and little sister Amber out of their beds and laid them on the pavement in front of our house as they would have panicked to wake up and find themselves in space.
60 seconds to go. I started warming up the engines with special heating devices. I primed fuel into the engines. I also sealed up the house, locking oxygen in with it.
20 seconds!! I ignited the engines and revved them up a bit…. 5,4,3,2,1, BLAST OFF!!!
Then I woke up, feeling really funny inside. Swunk (Highly Commended)

I woke up triple pumped to kneel down beside the Christmas tree.
Zina strutted past in her belly button high shirt avoiding the
Christmas tree approaching her laptop beside the fire.
“Zina why don’t you sit down and open presents with me?”
“Because I’m scared of Christmas.” She said while typing.
“Why?”
“Because there is a curse.”
“A curse?!”
“Yes of the swunk-a-dunk.” She began to place her head phones on.
“Yeah, right, stop trying to scare me.” I whispered to myself.
I kneeled down beside the Christmas tree and gathered all of my
presents. I unwrapped all of them in a hyper active chirp with a
triumphant feeling.
I sunk under the tree to find unfound presents, to find myself
holding a rather small box spread with a dust over-layer with pitch,
black tattered wrapping paper and a faint name scribbled on a
piece of card. I read aloud my sister Zina’s name.
She just ignored me. I pulled the plug to her computer and threw
the present at her.
“Oww why did you do that?”
“There’s a present for you.”
“If I open it will you go away?”
“Yes.”
I retreated to play with the new toys I got when Zina yelled, “Help
Valerie please help!”
“No way I’m not falling for it.”
I refused to look and faced the tree until an absurd SWUNK noise
came directly form Zina’s seat. I turned around and could not see
Zina anywhere.
“Stop trying to scare me.” I chanted.
I scanned the fire and her seat. It was when I checked her chair a
lump of soggy, black fur lay there.
I lifted it up slowly then…… SWUNK!!!!!!!!
Protecting a Child’s Online Identity Thanks go to Taryn Cosgrove for organising the “Protecting a Childs Online Identity” workshop presented by
John Parsons at the Village theatre on Tuesday evening.
John covered topics such as inappropriate use of social media and the consequences, parent responsibilities,
safety and child protection and support for the future world of the cyber world.
Parents and staff who attended found the presentation really informative but also a bit scary as to how
children can put themselves at risk.
He stressed the importance of parents to staying involved with their children’s cyber life.
As a parent do you know what your child is accessing on your home computer? Do you ever check?
Is your computer screen in a place that can be easily seen by you?
Interesting information gathered from our Motupipi Yr 5/6 (9-11 year old students):
30% have their own facebook page even though legal age is 13, which means a false identity has
been given.
34% can access whatever they want on their computer without parents checking what sites they
are accessing.
40% can take computers anywhere in the house to work on
70% have no filters blocking access to offensive or inappropriate sites.
80% felt they knew more about accessing information than their parents
35% had I-pods with internet access with 5% having what they are looking at checked by a par-
ent once a month.

At Full Moon (Second equal) By Bonnie
I looked around, the place was deserted, suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw… BLOOD RED EYES through a bush then a
nose as black as the night sky poked out and sniffed. While the nose sniffed the eyes just stared at me. My hands shook with
fear, my teeth chattered with coldness. On my left white teeth with SPOTS OF BLOOD shimmered in the moonlight. The things
crept closer and closer but ever so slowly it crept.
Grey fur started to emerge as well. Ears as pointed as a knife appeared, my knees started to bang together. All of a sudden the
creature pounced, I bolted, the thing ran after me! I could make out what the creature was now… it was a…WOLF!
“OROOOOW” it howled as it chased me.
Slowing gradually the wolf disappeared. As I caught my breath I heard small barks and yelps from behind me, maybe it was a
mother wolf protecting her babies or she had just hunted down some puppies!
I quietly walked back to the place where I saw the wolf. The yelps got louder and louder. I realized a hole in the hedge that might
be a short cut so I went though it. I stopped to admire the full moon, who knows what the full moon does to animals?
I continued my journey trying not to make a sound. Then I heard a stampede of paws, I wasn’t sure in which direction but I hid
anyway. I was barely breathing, then a pack of wolves ran past without noticing me! At the back of the pack was the wolf that was
chasing me before!
As the pack disappeared from sight I breathed calmly then started walking back down the hedge. I started to hear something
like little barks and yaps. The noises got louder and louder
“GRRRRRRRRR!” my tummy growled but I continued.
Then a cave appeared and sounds like pups came to me. But the noises were conimg from in a cold dark cave… GULP !
“HELLO PUPS ARE YOU IN THERE?”I yelled.
Yap! Yap! That sounded like a “yep” to me. Ha, ha, ha! GULP!
I tipped toed in slowly, I think the pups were jumping around because I heard “Thud, Thud, Thud”. Something furry rubbed
against my leg. I thought it was a tarantula, so I screamed and ran out but, as the full moon shone I noticed a dogs nose, it was
the pups. I kneeled down calling. “Come on, come here!” Clicking my fingers, then number 1 pup, 2 pup, 3 wolf , 4 …. hang on just a
minute? 3 wolf ?4? GULP! They had baby sitters! I ran, being chased by one babysitter! Oh no! There’s the pack from earlier on, in
front of me… I was doomed.
So I fell to my knees praying to God, “Oh, help me, please!”
