2G-SGSN Reporting Suite Component

Purpose

Flexible Reporting Suite provides ready-made on-demand or scheduled reports for analysing the performance of the network. There are close to 300 predefined reports for different technologies including over 3,000 Nokia-specified Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in total to fulfil the information needed on traffic, mobility, resources, quality, charging, and Quality of Service. Detailed KPI matrices support optimisation & troubleshooting tasks.

Flexible Reporting Suite is divided into technology based report components, which can be ordered and installed separately. In this way an operator can build a report combination that best suits their purposes.

The 2G SGSN Reporting Suite component includes reports, for example, about

• SGSN traffic, SGSN SMS traffic, BSSGP traffic and NSVC traffic

• SGSN resources, SGSN PDP resources and BSSGP resources

• SGSN mobility, attach failures, PDP activation failures, CPU load and paging

• SGSN overload and NSVC data

Reporting Suite Platform Features

The Reporting Suite contents – i.e. the KPIs and reports - is defined in XML-configuration files. This provides support for fast content updates from Nokia Siemens Networks. At the same time it offers full flexibility for implementing own tailor made reports to suit customers own reporting specifications.

The Reporting Suites processing part of the NetAct Reporting Suite consists of the flexible processing engine which ensures the correct linking to the table structure and adaptation object layer information of the performance measurements in the NetAct database. The Flexible engine makes use of multi-pass database queries to ensure optimum performance when calculating the KPIs – based on the performance counters in the NetAct database. A caching functionality is available to ensure that report data is loaded from cache the 2nd time it is run, thus improving performance and reducing load on the NetAct database server.

Functionality

To run a report, you define a specific network area, time period and time aggregation level, after which the tool generates a detailed tabular report. The KPI values are presented in a matrix that enables you to:

• sort the values by any column

• drill down to lower level matrices for more detailed information (both lower network element levels and lower time aggregation levels supported)

• presenting the KPI values in multiple graphs

• drill-down on a KPI to see a graphical presentation of the KPI and a table detailing the contribution of each counter element of the KPI

• export the data in native Excel format – keeps formatting, color mark-ups and freeze panes

• open an online help for more information on the report and KPI in question (descriptions, formulas, related counters, measurement table names)

Example of a 2G-SGSN report:

The scheduling of reports can be used to automate tasks and balance the load to the system by running reports at night, for example. The scheduler is configured using XML files. Scheduled output is automatically saved into folders on the server.

• Scheduler can be setup to generate native Excel output files

• Scheduler supports automatic creation and update of ZIP files

• Scheduler supports automatic e-mail forwarding

• Scheduler supports automatic creation of a manual or criteria based working set

You can view and analyze the saved reports in Excel format with Report Download Browser. When necessary, for a more detailed analysis you can open the Excel report in a Web UI from a link in the Excel sheet, for example, to drill down to other object or time levels.

An additional way of distributing scheduled reports is by using the e-mail forwarding functionality. One or more e-mail addresses can be defined for distribution and the e-mail will contain an Excel sheet from each report scheduled.

XML – file based configuration definitions of Flexible Reporting Suite reports includes e.g. easy KPI & report customization/configuration, report scheduling, web download of scheduled reports, e-mailing of scheduled reports and working set generation.

Implementation

Reports run on the GUI Server of Nokia NetAct. Reports are easily accessible via web browser in both regional and global cluster.
