3 rd Grade Curriculum Night Welcome to Third Grade!! Were so excited to welcome your childand you to third grade. Your childs success is our top priority. Here are some things that we think will help. Mary Evans Elementary Mission Statement All students, with support of staff, parents, and community will be provided a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that empowers them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be lifelong learners and citizens of good character who are prepared to contribute to an ever- changing, global society. Mary Evans Elementary Vision Mary Evans students will be able to think critically and creatively, solve problems, and will learn to communicate effectively. Our students will learn to work effectively as individuals and as group members, develop self- confidence, self-discipline, and respect for others, recognize the contributions of individuals, groups and cultures in society, and demonstrate civic responsibility. Introductions TEAM 1 Sandra Mitchell Keri Laney Brandi Crawford TEAM 2 Katie Tsutsumi Cheryl Mena Punctuality Please make sure your child is at school in the cafeteria by 7:45. Teachers will pick them up promptly at 7:50. If students are eating breakfast, they will need to be in the cafeteria in time to get and finish eating before pick up time. Breakfast service ends at 7:45. Toys Please do not bring toys or stuffed animals unless requested. EXCEPTION 1Balls and jump ropes may be brought for playground use (no footballs) EXCEPTION 2board or card games for rainy day recess. Please label all of your childs items. Water Bottles Your child is encouraged to bring a water bottle especially during hot weather. Please label their water bottles with a paint pen or permanent marker. If students want to drink water at lunch they need to bring their own reusable water bottle to the cafeteria. Birthdays Non-food treats such as pencils, stickers, etc. may be brought to help celebrate your childs special day. Your child will be recognized by the office and by his/her teacher. Invitations may be passed out at school with teacher supervision if there is one for every child or one for every same gender child in the classroom. Teachers may not give out personal information for parties. Wednesday Folders Students will bring home a folder on Wednesdays. It will have communication from the office, PTA, etc. This is one of our primary methods of school-to-home communication. Please make sure you see the papers in this folder each Wednesday evening. Please sign and return papers if appropriate. Homework Please expect math homework on Mondays and Thursdays each week. Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes each night. There will occasionally be additional homework in other subject areas. Conferences Third grades conference time is 9:50-10:35 am. Please feel free to schedule an appointment with your childs teacher during this time. Parent conferences will be scheduled by your childs homeroom teacher during the first semester, if necessary. Schedule Healthy Snack: 9:30 Specials: 9:50-10:35 Lunch: 11:45-12:15 Recess: 12:15-12:45 Projects Graded projects will be accompanied by a parent letter and a grading rubric. Students will only be asked to work on one home project at a time. Agendas & Binders The purpose of an agenda is to help students better communicate to parents about their day at school. Homework will be listed in the agenda Please initial in the appropriate place every night and return to school daily It is your childs responsibility to remind you to sign their agenda Please check the front of your childs agenda for the Specials schedule. Athletic shoes must be worn on P.E. days. Grades Graded papers will be labeled and sent home in their Wednesday Folders on Wednesdays. A circle around the grade indicates that it has been entered in the grade book. Skyward Grades will now be accessible for you to view on Family Access. Skyward/Family Access is accessible under Quick Links for Parents on the Evans website. You must have a currentupdated in the office in order to access Skyward. Grading Policy Grade Average- 60% of your child's average comes from daily work and homework; 40% comes from tests, quizzes, and projects. Late work - For each day an assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted. Make up work - For each day of an excused absence, one day will be given to complete the assignment(s). Absences- If your child is absent for any reason, please send a note of explanation within three days or the absence is considered unexcused. Absences without notes are also considered unexcused. Grading Period- Report cards will be sent home every 9 weeks. Please sign and return report cards to your homeroom teacher. A copy will be provided for you. Please let us know if you need more than one copy. Assessment Third grade students are involved in the following standardized testing: Benchmarks Nov Simulations Feb Math STAAR May 9 Reading STAAR May 10 *Please try to avoid appointments on these days Third Grade Curriculum We encourage you to check out the following websites for information about state and local curriculum requirements.
