Narendra Modi...governing and diplomacy."The strength of social media is it can tell

government where they are going wrong,"Modi said. "We used to have elections everyfive years. Now we have them every fiveminutes."

Modi's visit to Facebook came halfwaythrough his weekend tour of Silicon Valley, where he has been meeting with technologyexecutives and seeking their ideas and assis-tance in bringing India fully into the digitalworld.

Silicon Valley has been eager to assist.India is the world's fastest-growing majoreconomy, and Internet and smartphone useare growing rapidly, providing new marketsfor U.S. companies.

In addition, tens of thousands of SiliconValley technology workers are of Indiandescent and eager to give something back totheir country of origin.

The prime minister, an avid user of Twitterand Facebook, sees technology as a way tolift India out of poverty.

"In this digital age, we have an opportunityto transform the lives of people in ways thatwere hard to imagine just a couple of decadesago," Modi said in San Jose on Saturday in adinnertime speech to about 500 technologyleaders, including the chief executives ofMicrosoft, Google, Adobe and Uber.

Naren Gupta, a founder of the SiliconValley investment firm Nexus VenturePartners, who helped organize Modi's visit, said the prime minister wants tech companiesto help him bring about that transformation.

"Innovation is a state of mind, and he issaying, help him bring that state of mind toIndia," Gupta said. "Big changes are prettymuch impossible to make. What you need todo in a democracy is take a thousand littlesteps."

Modi's message of partnership with U.S.technology companies has been carefullychoreographed to appeal to his constituents inIndia, a country that is rapidly discoveringthe Internet and the startup culture. The primeminister's Bharatiya Janata Party has encoun-tered setbacks in its legislative agenda andwill soon face state elections.

A group of academics raised concernsabout the free speech and privacy policies ofModi's government in an open letter beforehis visit. Outside Facebook headquarters,Sikh separatists also protested his visit.

On Saturday, Modi stopped by TeslaMotors, the electric-car maker, and held pri-vate meetings with three of the technologyworld's most powerful executives: Tim Cookof Apple, Sundar Pichai of Google and SatyaNadella of Microsoft.

At the subsequent dinner, the tight connec-tions between U.S. companies and the Indiangovernment were apparent.

Modi announced that Google had agreed toprovide free public Wi-Fi in hundreds ofIndian railroad stations, which are major tran-sit and social hubs for their communities.

Recalling his childhood in India, Nadellapledged that Microsoft would help Indiabring wireless Internet to its 500,000 villages, but offered no details. "What opportunitiescan we unlock, what changes can we spark?"he said.

Qualcomm, a chipmaker with thousands ofemployees in India, promised $150 million tofinance Indian startups.

After the Facebook visit Sunday, Modiplanned to visit Google and StanfordUniversity, and to drop by a meeting ofIndian tech entrepreneurs. In the evening, hewas scheduled to address a sold-out crowd ofabout 18,000 people, mostly Indo-Americans, at an arena in San Jose.

What Bengaluru...Prime Minister Narendra Modi dropped in

at Silicon Valley, the global hub for innova-tion and technology, over the weekend.

CEO Sundar Pichai said Google would tieup with the government to provide free Wi-Fiat 500 railway stations across the country.Microsoft's Satya Nadela said his companywould take broadband connectivity to fivelakh villages across the country.

And that its cloud services would operateout of India's data centres.

Some smaller companies in Bengaluruhope they will get some business when thesegiant projects are implemented. "Smallercompanies like ours would be hoping we geta share of the pie when it comes to implemen-tation. The government should ensure that,"said Soujanya Prakash, a General Manager atVee Technologies, to NDTV. Vee one of thecompanies assigned to implement part of themassive Aadhar identity card project.

Ms Prakash said companies like Microsoftand Google bring great technological expert-ise with them.

Pranesh Prakash, Policy Director for theCentre for Internet and Technology, had aword of caution as he voiced concern aboutthe privacy policies of some big global com-panies. "The government should push for astrong data protection regime in India andforce these companies to abide by that," hesaid.

Mr Prakash also said, "These companiesneed India more than we need them sincethere are more than one billion customers

here. The Indian government must be wise inusing this bargaining power."

Shouldn't Act ...Shakeel Ahmed said when asked about the

video.The incident reportedly occurred before

the start of the Townhall event in SiliconValley on Sunday.

In the video, Mr Zuckerberg and the COOof Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg are seen pre-senting a memento to PM Modi, who thenholds Mr Zuckerberg by his arm and pullshim by his side.

Mr Ahmed said that the Prime Minister isknown for "photo-ops and event managementas also packaging and repackaging" and for"spending much time" abroad.

PM Modi, who was on a two-nation tour ofIreland, and the US, also travelled to WestCoast where he visited FacebookHeadquarters for a Townhall question andanswer session with its CEO, MarkZuckerberg. He also visited Google campusand Tesla Motors.

He spent 50 minutes on stage with MrZuckerberg, when he also talked about theimportance of social media and his "DigitalIndia" initiative, which seeks to connect thou-sands more Indian villages to the Internet andboost technology investments.

The Prime Minister has an image of aninternet-savvy leader and is even keen onselfies.

"Amit Shah wants to ensure that the entireparty apparatus is solidly behind the goal towin the assembly elections as the last leg ofcampaign starts. Whatever tactical changes incampaign or toning up of management atlocal and booth level are required will bedone by him," a party source said.

The 50-year-old will hold meetings atBegusarai, Aurangabad, Patna, Muzaffarpurand Supaul besides other places from tomor-row till October 5.

He will also hold rallies at Kishanganj,Katihar and Purnia, the BJP had lost on theseseats during the 2014 general elections. MrShah's decision to hold rallies here, under-lines the importance he has attached to theseplaces where the Muslim concentration is atits most in the state.

On October 2, Prime Minister NarendraModi will also return to the Bihar campaignwith a rally in Banka, another parliamentaryseat that the BJP lost.

Bihar goes to polls in five phases betweenOctober 12 and November 5.

Almost all opinion polls have predicted aneck and neck fight between the BJP-ledNDA and the grand alliance spearheaded byChief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD chiefLalu Prasad.

Effect of Dengue ...told reporters. He said: "Due to people's alertness and

health personnel's seriousness, the death dueto dengue is insignificant in the northeasternregion."

In the presence of Tripura Health MinisterBadal Choudhury, Mr Chatterjee said so far15 people have been affected by dengue inthe state, but none of them has died so far.

"Dengue is an infection disease caused bythe mosquito, Aedes aegypti, which is the pri-mary epidemic vector. Dengue infection mayoccur in the form of classical dengue fever ordengue haemorrhagic fever with bleedingmanifestations or with or without shock(decreased blood pressure), and then thepatient might expire in that situation," headded.

To check the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) inTripura, last year the state government withthe advice of the union health and family wel-fare ministry targeted to administer JE vac-cine to 513,800 children up to the age of 15years. But due to negative campaign by a sec-tion of media, only 226,500 JE vaccinescould be given, the Health Minister said.

The Minister said last year around 51,300people, mostly children, fell ill to malaria andof them around 100 people died. This year sofar, 22,562 people have suffered from malar-ia and 16 people have succumbed to the dis-ease.

On his part, Nepal's Ambassador to IndiaDeep Kumar Upadhyaya said he hoped thatthere would be ease in supply of essentialcommodities from India soon as efforts arebeing made at diplomatic and political levelin this regard.

Asking people from both countries toobserve tolerance and have a positive attitudetowards dealing with the issue, the Nepaleseenvoy said, "India has always played animportant role during the hardship faced byNepal in the past which was evident during

the recent earthquakes. Let's not speak irre-sponsible things and develop negative atti-tude towards each other at this sensitive timewhich might damage the centuries old friend-ly relations."

Another Big...Welcoming the RBI's decision, BJP said it

was a reflection of a growing economy underPrime Minister Narendra Modi and FinanceMinister Arun Jaitley. "The reduction in inter-est rate will bring down EMI and help thedreams of many to have their own homes. Itwill give a boost to real sector and that in turnwill give a fillip to cement and steel industries.Another big promise of BJP of bringing theinterest rate down has been fulfilled," partysecretary Siddharth Nath Singh said.

Crediting the Modi government's policies,he said the RBI has been able to cut ratesbecause inflation was low and stable over thelast few months.

The RBI has also acknowledged that foodgrain output is expected to be higher than lastyear despite poor monsoon because of timelyadvisories and regular monitoring of seed andfertilizer availability by the government, hesaid. "There are clear signs of a pick up in con-sumer demand as reflected by increase in theindirect tax revenues, which again is reflectiveof appropriate policies of the government," hesaid. Noting that the government's and theRBI's reading of the economic situation is sim-ilar, he said it was in contrast to the previousUPA dispensation when the Finance Ministerand the RBI governor were seen walking inopposite directions.

Home and corporate loans will cost less asthe RBI today lowered the key interest rate by0.50 per cent - the biggest cut in over threeyears - to bolster the economy.

Poll Promise ...reduction in short-term lending rate by the

Reserve Bank of India Governor (RaghuramRajan) by 50 basis points. This is the fourthreduction in interest rate in a year. The mon-etary policy accommodation is a reflection ofa growing, robust economy under PrimeMinister Narendra Modi and FinanceMinister Arun Jaitley," Bharatiya Janata Partynational secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said ina statement in New Delhi.

"The fundamentals of the Indian economyare strong as reflected by the growing forexreserves, increased foreign direct investment, control over fiscal deficit as well as currentaccount deficit," he added.

The BJP leader said the RBI was able to cutlending rate primarily because inflation waslow and stable over the last few months.

"This is reflective of the government'smeasures to keep prices of most commoditiesunder check. The RBI has also acknowledgedthat food grain output is expected to be high-er than last year, despite poor monsoon, dueto timely advisories and regular monitoringof seed and fertiliser availability by the gov-ernment," he said. Taking a dig at earlierCongress-led United Progressive Alliancegovernment at the Centre, he said, "The gov-ernment and the RBI's reading of the eco-nomic situation is similar, in contrast to theprevious government when the then FinanceMinister and the RBI Governor were seenspeaking in contrasting terms."
