A diverse cross-section of jazz royalty and the stars of a rising generation converge on Melbourne from all points of the globe to celebrate life, as it should be – a complete immersion in the joys of music – for the 2012 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Artistic Director Michael Tortoni has drawn on the rich legacy of jazz as inspiration for its future in crafting the 2012 Festival – from living legends like McCoy Tyner (USA), Dr Lonnie Smith (USA), Patti Austin (USA) and The Fringe (USA), to shapers of the contemporary scene like Terence Blanchard (USA), Chris Potter (USA) and Renaud Garcia-Fons (France), to the next wave in jazz powerhouses like Hiromi (Japan), Robert Glasper (USA), Eli Degibri (Israel) and Samuel Yirga (Ethiopia).

“Like the great cities of New York, London and Paris that are remembered for their music, architecture and culture, Melbourne has also become an international destination, particularly for jazz musicians. Melbourne’s rich pool of home grown talent, more than ever, is attracting collaborative peers from all over the world”, said Artistic Director Michael Tortoni.

The Festival will be bookended by two formidable displays of vocal mastery: José James (USA) who will be honouring one of the most

underappreciated singers in jazz history, the late Johnny Hartman; and the leading lady of American stage, Dee Dee Bridgewater.

With over 300 performers, more than 100 events – including 30 free events, 11 world premieres, 13 Australian premieres, eight Festival exclusives and eight Australian/international collaborations – the 2012 Melbourne International Jazz Festival is the largest and most diverse festival of its kind in Australia.

In a Festival fi rst at the Hi-Fi Bar, younger music fans will be initiated into the world of jazz with a high-voltage under-18s gig featuring Australian funksters The Cactus Channel (fresh from their high school graduation) and Saskwatch.

For the even younger, children’s television icon, Play School, and old friends like Big Ted, Little Ted and Jemima return to introduce the little ones to the wonder of jazz in Play School’s Big Jazz Adventure. Artplay Jazz for Kids: LifeBoat gets kids clicking their fi ngers and tapping their feet to the rhythm of some catchy music in a free family event.

The MIJF has something for everyone and is an iconic event on our city’s calendar – be involved and start tapping your toes!

$23.5 MILLION TRANSPORT CONGRESS TO BE HELD IN MELBOURNE IN 2016 Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher and Minister for Public Transport and Roads Terry Mulder recently announced that Melbourne had won the right to host the prestigious Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress in October 2016.

Expected to attract more than 5000 delegates to the city and generate more than $23.5 million for Victoria, the large-scale trade exhibition and conference will be held over fi ve days at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Ms Asher said it was a big win for Victoria and once again proves the state’s credentials in hosting congresses and conferences. “Hosting the Congress here in Melbourne will provide an opportunity to showcase the latest technical developments to a global audience, with delegates including private corporations, public agencies and academic institutions involved in the research, design and implementation of new technologies across all modes of transport.” Ms Asher said.

Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technologies include communication, data processing and electronic technologies for in-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and mode-to-mode systems that increase transport safety and mobility, improve the sustainability of travel, reduce congestion, and improve the performance and competitiveness of all modes of transport.

Mr Mulder said the large Congress would give Melbourne the chance to

showcase some of its advanced ITS initiatives, including the radio break-in railway level crossing safety program, adaptive traffi c control systems, priority signalling for road-based public transport vehicles, electronic tolling and freeway management and information systems to reduce delays due to traffi c incidents.

A new literary landmark has been unveiled when a previously unnamed Melbourne laneway near the State Library was brought to life.

The Lord Mayor was joined by Melbourne based poet Alia Gabres and comedy duo Elbow Skin, to launch Literature Lane as Melbourne’s lasting legacy of the National Year of Reading and Melbourne’s UNESCO City of Literature status.

“Melbourne was awarded UNESCO City of Literature status in 2008, as part of the creative cities network and this year, we celebrate the National Year of reading. We are a city rich in literary diversity and the home to many writers, publishers and literary festivals” said the Lord Mayor.

Sue McKerracher, Director of the National Year of Reading said: “We have seen some amazing initiatives happening

around the country during the National Year of Reading, but naming a laneway - that’s very special. It’s something that will have a lasting impact and will really put books and reading on the map.”

Melbourne’s reputation as a prosperous and progressive city is expected to grow with millions of dollars proposed in the draft 2012-13 budget for initiatives that will help the city retain its competitive edge into the future.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said prosperity and sustainability were inextricably linked in all successful cities of the 21st century and Melbourne was an acknowledged leader. “Sustainability is no longer only relevant to the environment. It is radically changing the way we design cities, do business and live our

lives. Sustainability is at the core of all thriving cities around the world.

“Four years ago, we were recycling 98 million litres of water annually. The projects we have implemented since mean we now recycle 282 million litres of water every year. This saves both water and money, with a reduction in costs of around $558,000 every year – an impressive outcome for the budget and the environment” added the Lord Mayor.

Councillor Cathy Oke, responsible for the Eco-City portfolio, said this commitment

would continue with exciting new projects planned for the next 12 months.

“We are putting a further $10.2 million allocated to stormwater projects in this year’s budget to the Fitzroy Gardens project which is currently underway. New stormwater projects in Birrarung Marr and Queen Victoria Gardens will harvest a further 50 million litres a year to keep Melbourne green and inviting for residents and visitors,” Councillor Oke said.

Economic Development and Knowledge City Councillor Kevin Louey, said the future of the retail sector would also be strengthened with the release of a new retail strategy next year.

“We know that retail is doing it tough in some parts, but we are committed to protecting Melbourne’s reputation as a shopping and dining capital. Since 2009, the City of Melbourne has put $900,000 into the retail sector through initiatives such as the Great Melbourne Treasure Hunt and Look.Stop.Shop. Funding has also gone towards the Melbourne Retail Advisory Board and into research

tools including the Retail Report Card and Melbourne Retail Monitor.

“Council’s investment in its premier events, including Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, in 2011-12 generated a $76.6 million impact to retailers in the local economy.

“For 2012-13, we are proposing a further $435,000 to continue this support. In 2013 we will release a new strategy to promote Melbourne’s unique assets including its distinct laneways and vibrant street life and culture. The strategy will be aligned with the business community to better meet the needs of retail in the city as we all embrace the consumer shift to new ways of shopping” said Cr Louey.

The draft budget is open for public consultation until 5pm Friday 8 June 2012. A fi nal version will be considered by Council on Tuesday 28 June 2012.

The internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre returns to Melbourne this June with a new work TERRAIN by celebrated Aboriginal choreographer Frances Rings. This powerful fusion of contemporary dance and storytelling is commissioned by Bangarra’s Artistic Director Stephen Page.

Described as a hymn to country, TERRAIN transports us to Lake Eyre, the place of Australia’s inland sea: one of the few untouched natural waterways in the world.

Through dynamic contemporary dance, design and music, Frances and Bangarra’s 14 Aboriginal and Torres Strait dancers explore the relationship of Indigenous people to country and how landscape becomes a second skin.

Bangarra’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of Indigenous storytellers is further advanced through its strong association with Frances Rings. In 2002 she made her choreographic debut for Bangarra Dance Theatre to outstanding critical acclaim with Rations in the program Walkabout.

With the world premiere of TERRAIN in Melbourne, Bangarra continues to play an important role in Australia’s creative and cultural future.

AFL’s star studded alumni including Wayne Carey, Anthony Koutoufi des and 2012 rookies Peter Everitt, Steven Baker, David Wirrpanda and Tadhg Kennelly are set to strap on the boots for another chance at footy glory when they line up for the State-of-Origin showdown between Victoria and the All Stars in the annual Ray White EJ Whitten Legends Game.

Joining the honour roll of over 50 former AFL greats is self-professed Collingwood legend Strauchanie, a smattering of celebrities, two local footy heroes, comedic runners and jesting umps to raise money for prostate cancer research and awareness - the disease that claimed the late, great AFL hero Teddy Whitten.

With Fitzy’s goal on the siren controversially disallowed, the All Stars will be looking to avenge last year’s 2 point loss to the Vics.

The Ray White EJ Whitten Legends Game is an affordable family friendly event with the chance to meet some of the players at the pre-game fan fest, fantastic half time entertainment and a guarantee of four quarters of entertaining footy.
