Care Packages

for the Homeless The Middle School Youth Group is partnering with

the Bread & Roses Ministry to create care packages

for the homeless. We are in need of travel�sized �

shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, �

deodorant, lo�on, �ssues, chaps�ck, gum, wet

wipes, and Band�Aids. If you have hotel�sized �

toiletries in your home, please consider dona�ng

those as well. A basket has been placed in the

Gathering Space for your dona�ons. The MSYG will

deliver assembled packages on December 11. �

Stewardship: Parishioner’s Answering God’s Call in Service Recently a small group of young women from Prince of Peace organized an outreach field trip to Mary’s House, a Catholic

worker house that provides emergency shelter for families in addi�on to community educa�on and support. �

They spent the morning weeding and pruning the grounds. �Please submit your stewardship story examples to cathy.yarbrough@popcatholic.org. �

They may be edited for space considera�on. �

Sock and Underwear Drive!�The Weekender Backpack Program provides food for the

weekend to needy students a#ending Simmons, Holy �

Family and Our Lady of Fa�ma Schools. This has been a �

win�win program, appreciated so much by the students, �

faculty and parents. Members of POP are making a �

difference for local families. O)en, the basic necessi�es �

are overlooked in these families. Therefore, we are �

collec�ng socks and underwear to deliver to these schools

over the winter. If you would like to par�cipate, most sizes

are acceptable (K � 8th grade, male and female students). �

Socks must be SOLID white or black with no logos �

(no stripes). Look for the bin labeled “Sock and Underwear

Drive” in the Gathering Space. Dona5ons will be accepted

from present thru December 14. Thank you for making a

difference in these young children’s lives. �

Weekender Backpack Program

Expanding! Thanks to your generous dona�ons, the Weekender Backpack

Program has been feeding 50 needy students at Simmons �

Middle School on the weekends. In addi�on, Prince of Peace

will soon be providing weekend food for students at Holy �

Family and Our Lady of Fa�ma Schools. If you would like to

volunteer to feed the hungry in this year of mercy, help is

needed packing food on the first Thursday of every month �

at 6:00 pm in the St. Jude Room. We are also in need of a �

Hospitality Coordinator to make phone calls reminding �

volunteers of their du5es. Please contact Marsha Hernandez,

Religious Education Children Need Quiet Time, Too!�

�

Personal Reflec5on can lead to Prayer�

Quiet, reflec�ve �me is an endangered species in our culture. For many families, every moment of life is filled with noise and

ac�vity, and “down �me” is seen as empty rather than rich and full.��

“The importance of quiet �me is something that our culture fails to respect,” says author Polly Berrien Berends. She sees an

overemphasis on compe��on and social interac�on that leads to children’s lives being over�scheduled. “We teach our children

to fear silence and solitude,” says Berends. We also distract them from becoming acquainted with the voice of God within them. ��

Berends says, “The child whose private, quiet �me is respected and protected benefits in many ways. She has a chance to �

develop her own individuality and sense of self, to follow her own crea�ve passions, to learn that she is good company (if for

herself, then also for others), to develop her imagina�on, and to discover deep inner resources for healing and inspira�on. Such

quiet �me is also very good prepara�on for prayer.”��

You can help your children to learn how to pray by teaching them tradi�onal prayers, by praying with them, by leLng them see

you pray, and by protec�ng their �mes of quiet. Silence is an acquired taste � especially if we’ve been on a steady diet of noise

and ac�vity. But once again, quiet �me will feed your child for a life�me. (Loyola Press)�

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24) End the Epidemic

In the last 10 years, the United States has seen the number of heroin�related overdoses nearly quadruple. According to the

American Society of Addic�on Medicine, in 2014 more than 10,000 people died from heroin overdoses and more than 18,000

from prescrip�on opioids, together accoun�ng for nearly two�thirds of the accidental drug overdoses in the country. The �

greatest increases in the death rates have occurred in the Midwest and the Northeast, and in young adults ages 25 to 34. Four

out of five heroin users first became addicted to prescrip�on opioids before moving on to heroin, o)en because it is cheaper

and easier to obtain.�

Around the country, local and state governments, health care workers, law enforcement, families and faith communi�es are

struggling with how to end this epidemic of addic�on. Some strategies have proved effec�ve in countering addic�on. �

Physicians have begun issuing short�term prescrip�ons for opioids following medical procedures so that the drugs will last only

un�l a recovering pa�ent can visit a physician. Needle drop�off programs, more comprehensive prescrip�on monitoring �

programs to discourage individuals from reques�ng prescrip�ons from mul�ple doctors and increased numbers of and access

to treatment centers have also helped. Addi�onal evidence�based strategies also can benefit the wider community, including

the expansion of good Samaritan laws, so that drug users are not prosecuted when repor�ng an overdose, and increased �

access to drugs such as naloxone that counteract overdoses. These strategies recognize that drug abuse is a community issue

with community solu�ons. (America Magazine, October 31, 2016 issue)�

Auxiliary Ladies of the Knights of Columbus Scholarship The Alabama State Council of Auxiliary Ladies of the Knights of Columbus is offering two $500.00 college scholarships to be

awarded to a woman who is a prac�cing Catholic and resident of Alabama. This would also apply to someone who is a high

school senior, someone already in college, or a woman wan�ng to return to college to further herself with a graduate degree.�
