A MESSAGE FROM FR. ROBERT: ADD CONFESSION TO LENTEN PLANS
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:“Peace be with you!” With these words, the Risen Lord greeted his frightened Apostles in the Upper Room on the day of his Resurrection. They were troubled, anxious, and fearful—much like each one of us at some point in our lives. Christ repeated the words, “Peace be with you.” But then he added, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (Jn 20:19-23).
What an extraordinary gift! The Risen Lord was proclaiming that all the suffering he had just endured was in order to make available the gifts of salvation and forgiveness. He wanted the Apostles to receive these gifts. He wanted them to become apostles of this forgiveness to others.
In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also called confession, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sacrament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacri- cial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year.1 The Church also encourages fre-quent confession in order to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns
of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conver-sion. Since the graces of the sac-rament are so similar to the pur-pose of the New Evangelization, Pope Benedict XVI has said, “The New Evangelization . . . begins in the confessional!”2
We bishops and priests are eager to help you if you experience dif culty, hesitation, or uncer-tainty about approaching the Lord in this sacrament. If you have not received this healing sacrament in a long time, we are ready to
welcome you. We, whom Christ has ordained to min-ister this forgiveness in his name, are also approach-ing this sacrament, as both penitents and ministers, throughout our lives and at this special moment of grace during Lent. We want to offer ourselves to you as forgiven sinners seeking to serve in the Lord’s name.
During Lent—in addition to the various peniten-tial services during which individual confession takes place—we bishops and priests will be making ourselves available often for the individual celebration of this sacrament. We pray that through the work of the Holy Spirit, all Catholics—clergy and laity—will respond to the call of the New Evangelization to encounter Christ in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Come to the Lord and experience the extraordinary grace of his forgiveness!

WEEKLY REFLECTION ON THE READINGSMARCH 8, 2020 | SECOND SUNDAY OF LENTCALL TO PRAYER: We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.FIRST READING: Gn 12:1-4RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22SECOND READING: 2 Tm 1:8-10GOSPEL: Mt 17:1-9 | Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
REFLECTION:Adults/Teens: This week, our Gospel message takes us to the Transfiguration of Jesus. We meet Peter, James, and John with Christ on the mountain. As Jesus prayed, an incredible miracle occurs, Jesus is Transfigured and the men get a glimpse of His Glorified Body. This event scared the Apostles that were there, in fact, Jesus had to assure them that things were alright. Peter declares that because this event is so amazing, they should make tents and live there! This response is so human, so logical; “things are great, lets do what we can to keep them that way.” What Peter does not realize is that this is not the end of Jesus journey, in fact, what Jesus must endure for the forgiveness of our sins is only beginning. What is true, though, is that this experience transformed the hearts of Peter, James, and John. They saw things differently because they saw Christ differently. If we are willing to see Jesus for all He truly is, how would that affect our outlook? How has our faith in Jesus transformed our lives? How has the example of Jesus helped us to become a better community of individuals? Children: Name some times when your belief in Jesus helped make you stronger. When can others see the light of Jesus in you? What can you do this week to show your love for Jesus?
Take a moment to reflect on Jesus and His presence in your life.
Pray together, aloud, the Our Father.

HAND-CARVED GIFTS FROM BETHLEHEMTHIS WEEKEND, after all MassesIn the CourtyardCome browse the beautiful hand-carved articles, made from wood of the sacred Olive tree. This workmanship has been the tradition for about 180 families living in Bethlehem for hundreds of years. It is hoped that through the efforts of Mr. Ayman Khair, these families can supplement their income and are able to stay living in the Holy Land.Unfortunately, the Christian population in the Holy Land has dropped from 22% to less than 2% in the last 30 years. Your support will go a long way in assisting these families in sharing the Gospel through art.
