DENTISTRY IN THE OROFACIAL PAIN ERA

From toothache to chronic pain

Congress Presentation

In recent years, the topic of orofacial pain has been often matter of debates and inflamed discussions within

the scientific communities. Most international academies advocate the creation of a professional figure, viz.,

the orofacial pain specialist, with combined neurological, dental, psychological, and more in general multidisci-

plinary competences that are needed to manage patients with such very complex conditons.

From toothache to neuralgias and neuropathic pain, via temporomandibular disorders, and up to the most di-

sabling chronic pain conditions, the diagnostic pathway requires a deep know-how of the differential diagno-

ses. A multidisciplinary approach involving several specialists is surely the most suitable approach. Notwith-

standing, the dentist keeps a primary role, being the only healthcare provider that is licensed to diagnose and

manage dental/intraoral pathologies, which are the most common cause of orofacial pain and should thus

often be considered as a first-step diagnostic hypothesis.

Thanks to the very comprehensive topics, this year’s GSID National Congress is going to be an unmissable occa-

sion for an interactive discussion on all orofacial pain issues. The wonderful seaside location will surely help

creating a familiar and relaxing environment for all participants and accompanying persons. The keynote spea-

kers (Antoon De Laat, Gary Klasser, Luca Guarda-Nardini, Daniele Manfredini) are, once again, international

renowned lecturers who have been chosen by virtue of their teaching skills and familiarity with interactive

congress platforms.

Such an approach is based on several moments of open debate during the two-day event, which is fundamen-

tal to upgrade passive to active learning. This format warranted an extraordinary success during last year’s

event on bruxism, and promises to be the most suitable strategy to get deeper into the full comprehension of

the different orofacial pain conditions and to help dentists approaching this difficult challenge.

In short, the 2017 GSID congress is a wonderful opportunity to achieve an evidence-based update on orofacial

pain, from toothache to chronic pain. Nothing better to confirm the old joke that “those with a hammer only

see nails”: getting out of the occlusally-focused dentistry one could easily realize the amount of neurological

and psychological knowledge that is actually needed to manage the dental profession at best!

We’ll be looking forward to see you in Marina di Carrara!
