Founded to promote, educate, and encourage artistic excellence in watercolor painting among members and within the community.

"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." – Albert Einstein

Isn't it wonderful when we learn something new? When someone teaches us something that we haven't tried before, or in some new way, with skills we already have. Doesn't it make us all want to experiment in new ways and take more risks with our art? Our March meeting demonstration with Shelley Hitz was a great example of taking something we know, watercolor, and using it in a way we have probably not thought about, lettering. This was an instance, whereas in Einstein’s quote above, the teacher awakened new joy in the thought of creative expression and knowledge. I know many of us wanted the demonstration to keep going, we were all taking in as much as we could and eager to embrace new skills and new ways to bring watercolor lettering into our art.

In thinking ahead to our June 20 meeting on the lawn at the Pioneers Museum, what a great opportunity

for so many members of the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society to become the teacher for the evening. Engaging the public in a paint-out will be a great way to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge within our community. We already have fifteen members signed up to set up on the lawn in various places around the museum grounds and paint and chat with passersby about watercolor. I can't think of a better way to help fulfill part of our mission statement as a society: to promote, educate, and encourage artistic excellence in watercolor painting among members and within the community.

Thank you to all the members who have signed up to teach and demonstrate in June, and I welcome many more who haven't had the opportunity to sign up, to either sign up at our next meeting or contact me directly. Also, we will need many more hands that evening to set up, take down and bring tables, etc. Please consider volunteering to help with what should be the most fun meeting and event we are having this year!

Board Meeting: A Board Meeting was held on Monday, March 19, 2018, at 6:00 PM at Il Vicino downtown. In attendance were:

Board Members: Nancy Neale, President Mary Piche, Vice President John Martin, Treasurer Rob Grishow, Secretary

Committee Member: Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair Lou Ann Sosalla, Hosts/Supplies Chair Jean Forsyth, Food Chair Joan Judge, Webmaster

Meeting came to order at 6:12 PM.

Website: Since our PPWS website was infected with malware a few years ago, we will be looking at new hosting sites that will provide security so that it doesn’t happen again, and if it does, the hosting company will fix it for us. Joan Judge and new member, Stephanie Beardslee, will be taking care of that.

Members' Show: Nancy said that 48 people participated in the Members' Show with 70 paintings. She will ask at Wednesday’s meeting why the participation was a bit lower than expected.

Meetings: Regarding the June 20 meeting at the Pioneers Museum, Nancy will pass around a signup sheet for members who want to do painting demos on the lawn during the meeting promoting the art of watercolor. Nancy has also asked to have local food trucks show up as well, adding to the community atmosphere. We will promote this as much as possible through marketing to get the public to join us.

Programs: April’s meeting presentation will be given by David Alvarez. August’s meeting will be a rummage sale.

Education Fund: We discussed possible recipients and uses for our new Education Fund.

Bylaws: Nancy would like to form a bylaws committee and would like to discuss changing the membership term/renewal time to reset at the beginning of the calendar year, starting in January instead of September. One idea is to

advertise PPWS memberships as holiday gifts, further promoting new memberships.

International Watermedia 2019: Mary discussed the 2019 Watermedia juror, Martha Mans, her fees, the need to nail down some details in getting a final contract drawn up, and establishing a final budget.

Marketing: The board approved Stephanie Beardslee to be our new Marketing Chairperson.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:10 PM.

Respectfully Submitted, Rob Grishow, Secretary

General Meeting: The General Meeting was called to order at 6:15 PM by Nancy Neale, President, on March 21, 2018, at Catalyst Campus, Harvey House Room.

Guests: None

Hosts & Chefs: Jean Forsyth organized the evening's salad bar and passed around a signup sheet for next month's sandwich bar. Hosts were Kang Lee Sheppard and John and Sally McGraw. Thank you to all who organized and also brought the ingredients.

Minutes: February's General Meeting Minutes were approved as they appeared in the March 2018 newsletter. A motion was made to approve minutes from the February 21 meeting, Sally McGraw seconded, the minutes were approved by the membership.

Treasurer’s Report: John Martin gave the treasurer's report: operating checking account had a beginning balance of $4,174.00 and ending balance $4,215.13. The expenses for the month were the audio/visual equipment and supplies. The savings account had no activity, and $638.50 was added to the education fund from the February auction proceeds.

Committee Reports

Marketing: Stephanie Beardslee has volunteered to be our new Marketing Chairperson, and she is also working with Joan Judge to take over as webmaster and to build a new website. Our current website is listed as "under construction" and partially down.

Membership: Everyone is to keep their name tags and bring them to meetings from now on. If you don't have a name tag, please let Sam Newcomb know.

International Watermedia: No Report

Members’ Show: The Members' Show is currently hanging at the Plaza of the Rockies. We have 48 members represented displaying a total of 70 pieces. Pickup is on Tuesday, April 3, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Everyone was encouraged to visit the show between now and April 2.

Library: Myra Patin and Becky Plack held an open library with magazines for sale and DVDs for rent.

Program: The demonstrator for the evening was Shelley Hitz teaching watercolor lettering and calligraphy. (See Page 5)

Old Business: The February auction was a great success: $1,277.00 was raised to be split between the education fund and the library. Myra and Nancy thanked those involved both for their donations of items as well as everyone's purchases and all the efforts that went into organizing the auction. The August meeting will have a silent auction and rummage sale of the remaining items that were donated, and Myra is still collecting donation items through June.

Congratulations to the winner of the “workshop for a new member of two years or less” for March, Norah Roscamp. (See Page 7)

New Business: The June 20 meeting is being planned as a "paint out" event on the lawn of the Pioneers Museum. Tentative plans include demonstrations, food trucks, and catering our meeting's meal. The purpose is to educate the public about art and watermedia, and

members are encouraged to signup and paint live on the grounds of the museum that evening and engage the public in the art of watercolor. The theme will be "A Midsummer Night's Dream." More details to follow as they are determined.

The Board is considering changing the membership renewal date to coincide with the calendar year and not be due at the same time as board elections. Committee Chairs will be asked to review the bylaws for any necessary changes, and it will be put to the membership for vote after the review and changes are completed.

Jean Forsyth spoke about Kid Power of Colorado, their upcoming event "Chocoholic Frolic," and their request for small painting contributions that could be part of the silent auction. The monies benefit educating kids how not to be victims. The event is May 5. Please contact Jean Forsyth with your donations.

Boulder Street Gallery has small frames at reasonable prices to benefit the gallery space. Stop by Boulder Street Gallery and ask about the frames in the backroom.

Sheppard Arts Institute has new classes forming; please contact www.sheppardartsinstitute.org for more information.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:45 PM.

Respectfully Submitted, Carole Sebben, Acting Secretary

March Program:

We utilized our new video system and the screens on both sides of the room to project the demonstration on watercolor lettering by our member, Shelley Hitz.

Shelley conducted a well-prepared and interesting program on how she got started, introduced us to the types of lettering and the tools and mediums she employs. She prefers to work in "modern calligraphy." It does take practice, but she suggested we start with our own handwriting/printing. There are basically three types of lettering, serif, sans serif and script. She prefers using round watercolor brushes in small sizes, i.e., #1 and #2, and brush pens, which allow for applying paint with pressure to achieve thick and thin strokes. There is a vast array of tools that can be found in hobby stores and through art suppliers.

Shelley recommended the following:

Finetec metallic watercolor pans in golds and silvers; Jane Davenport liquid watercolor filled brushes; Ecoline watercolor filled brushes; Brea Reefe watercolor/ink filled brushes; Zebra superfine brush pens; Tombow hard pens; Fudenosuke hard pens; Brea Reefe watermedia metallics; Dr. PH Martin liquid watercolor; Pentel small water brushes; Lightbox; Canson XL 140lb. watercolor paper; CP, 90 lb. watercolor cards; and Card stock paper.

Shelley offers three free classes on lettering through a teaching site called Skillshare https://www.skillshare.com.

She will be teaching a workshop on May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Mesa Hill Church. You can learn more and sign up for her free classes at www.yourcreativeadventure.com/free.

Shelley held everyone's interest and we all appreciated learning something new. Thank you Shelley!

Join us as Dave Alvarez reveals the highlights of our city’s past as an early beacon to the explorers and artists from

around the country who first came to paint our natural wonders, and then remain here to shape our culture into one of artistic sophistication, culminating with the Broadmoor Art Academy.

Members' Show

I'd like to thank all those members who participated in the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society's Members' Show at the Plaza of the Rockies in March.

We had 4 sales and lots of positive comments. I think exposure such as this helps our visibility in the community and perpetuates our mission of providing members a quality place to show their art work. Thanks to all of you too for your adherence to our "miniature" size limitations and your willingness to work hanging and take down of the show. I appreciate you all. It was a show I was quite proud to be in with all of you.

The PPWS Members' Miniature Show was held at the Plaza of the Rockies in downtown Colorado Springs from March 2 to April 2, 2018.

Thanks to Karen Standridge, our Members' Show Chair. Thank you also to Karen, Nancy Neale, Jean Forsyth and John Martin for handling intake on March 1. The show opened on First Friday, March 2, with a Reception from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. As a "small works" show, the paintings were varied and truly outstanding. Thanks to all our members who participated in the show and the opening. A special thanks to Shelley Hitz for creating our fabulous watercolor hand-lettered show poster.
