Let’s do less DIY
Do It Yourself projects are all the rage. Thanks in large part to YouTube, you can learn how to turn your pickup truck into a camper, install a toilet or remodel your kitchen! But are videos the best way to learn? There’s also a lot of blooper reels of epic DIY failures! Independence is one of the four essential elements of 4-H, but that doesn’t mean we al-ways have to figure things out on our own. The other three elements – Mastery, Belong-ing and Generosity – involve teamwork. Mentoring, being mentored, and partnering with each other can help us Make the Best Better. Within the next few months we will start offer-ing tools for those who prefer to interact more, as well as DIY projects:
Club Leader Resource Binder. Wisconsin 4-H has great materials but most of them are online and often hard to find. I’ve searched them out and organized them into a binder for leaders so they’re easier to access. It will also be available on a flash drive so pages can be printed off.
Updated Douglas County Handbook. This is the Reader’s Digest of the leader’s binder, and all our families and volunteers will have one sent to them, hopefully before January.
Updated Cloverbuds Project Books. Burnett County 4-H has shared with us a new set of Cloverbuds books that help kids rotate through projects over a 3-year span. These are not required but they do offer volunteers and families a way to sample different projects in an organized fashion, and they also are a good introduction to record keeping because worksheets are included.
Cloverbuds Project Nights. Various leaders will offer county-wide meetings to do one of the Cloverbuds book activities together. These will occur at various times and places to accommodate different schedules. It’s a fun way for kids and adults to connect with friends outside of their club!
Volunteer Mentoring. We have a lot of new volunteers and it’s always fun and en-couraging to share ideas anyway, so this winter we will begin offering mentoring sessions. If you have topics you’d like to cover or help lead, please contact the office.
These tools are coming in response to conversations we’ve had with numerous parents, youth and volunteers. As always, my door is open if you have more ideas! Many thanks to those who have worked on these tools, and to all of you for getting involved in 4-H! With great appreciation,
Sharon Krause 4-H Youth Development Educator

ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT 2017 ~ Key Award Winner
Kevin Garland Earns Wisconsin 4-H Key Award
Kevin Garland has been selected as Douglas County’s Wisconsin 4-H
Key Award winner for this year.
The prestigious Key Award, one of the highest recognitions a 4-H member can receive, honors a select group of 4-H participants annu-ally. The youth receiving this award are ones who have demonstrated consistent growth in their 4-H involvement, developed and applied their leadership skills, and actively participated in their club and com-munity. According to Douglas County 4-H Youth Development Agent Sha-ron Krause, this year’s winner exemplifies the goals and values of the Wisconsin 4-H Program: “Kevin has been a 4-H member since he was 5 years old and developed organization, communication, and leadership skills while learning various projects. As part of the Clover Country 4-H Club he has volunteered in area communities by ringing bells for the Salvation Army, stocking food pantries and par-ticipating in fundraisers such as the Relay for Life. He has worked as a camp counselor for three summer camps and during 4-H’s Space Camp in Alabama. Kevin is also a lifeguard, volunteer firefighter and working on getting his certification to be an EMT. In addition to all his 4-H activities, Kevin is very active at Northwestern High School as a member of various sports teams, band, choir, forensics, and as a youth delegate for Superior Days. He is a prime example of the 4-H motto, “Making the Best Better.” Key Award recipients are high school students with at least three years of experience in 4-H and one year as a youth leader. The Wis-consin Farm Bureau and Rural Mutual Insurance Company sponsor the Wisconsin 4-H Key Award program. They have sponsored these awards for over 25 years, helping 4-H to honor some of Wisconsin’s finest youth. Kevin also received the Mabel Luostari Scholarship Award. Photo courtesy Aria Wright.

GO GLOBAL WITH 4-H INTERNATIONAL IMMERSION PROGRAMS IN 2018 Interested in exploring all the world has to offer? If so, Wisconsin 4-H International Programs are for you! This is your chance to learn about the world by immersing yourself in daily life as a member of a family in a different country. By participating in a homestay instead of traveling as a tourist, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the country’s culture from an insider’s perspective, evolve as a global citizen, quickly adapt to new situations and ways of communication, and develop friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. One delegate from 2016 says, “One of my favorite parts of my exchange was learning how to make homemade tortillas with my host mother!” She also says that she gained soft skills like communication, both the Spanish language and nonverbal communication skills. Another valuable part of the experience was interacting with different people, which increased her ability to make connections with others. If you’re a 4-H youth 12 years old or older, you can apply to participate with other 4-H’ers from around the U.S. to live for a month next summer in Costa Rica, Norway, South Korea, or Japan. Wisconsin 4-H partners with States’ 4-H International Exchange Programs where advance preparation and safety are top priorities. All 4-H international delegations are accompanied by carefully selected and trained 4-H volunteers or staff Adult Advisors who support youth delegates to ensure that they have a positive experience. Visit http://wi4hinternational.org/ for additional information and an application. Applications are due to the Wisconsin 4-H International Programs Office November 20, 2017. Questions? Contact [email protected] or call 608-262-2491 or 608-262-1557. Equity Cooperative Livestock Association Scholarships Equity Cooperative Livestock announces the 2018 scholarship program. 2018 Space Camp 4HOnline Registration Date Change
The 4HOnline registration window for Space Camp changed from October 7-Dec. 31st to November 7th, 2017 - January 10th, 2018. This will also push back the last day for cancellation without financial penalty to January 20th.
We thought that this would be best in order to give all delegates a fair chance at registering when the window opens since we are tak-ing a limited number of youth this year. You can find an updated version of our calendar and quick reference guide posted on our website here: http://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4hedopp/.
