“Neglect is a harsh word, but if you understand the implications it’s having on the oral health stand-ards and the obesity issue, I think we need to be aware of what we’re subconsciously giving our chil-dren,” he says.“When you see the photos of young kids and their teeth, it’s just appall-ing and completely unnecessary.”Chris says he’d like to see all schools ban sugary drinks on their

premises and for the top of the south to take the lead on the issue.Birchwood School principal, Chris Herrick, says he would not look to bring a ban on the drinks to his school because very few students bring sugary drinks to school. “We promote healthy lifestyles and healthy options and would rather educate than put a ban in place.”But, he says, the school did recent-ly ban sugary drinks at its school disco, which is held twice a year, in favour of healthier options.

“I think it’s complicated. I grew up with fireworks but I would need more time to think about the pros and the cons.”

are helping promote Movem-ber in Nelson and they say it’s easy to get involved.“There are three ways to get involved,” says Shawn Stor-mann, from Stormy’s. “Sponsor a collection gum-boot in your store, donate your coffee or beer change to any Movember gumboot, or grow a mo and make a com-mitment to get a health check soon.”The collection gumboots have been donated by The Ware-house and will be put in Nel-son businesses. People can drop money in the gumboots at participating stores and the money raised

will go to the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust. At the end of the month, the Vic Brew Bar will host a Mo-vember Stache Bash where there will be prizes for the best mos.Shawn says Movember is a proven winner when it comes to getting men to talk about their health. “It’s really effective and really important. One in eight Kiwi men will deal with some form of depression in their life-time, and one in three New Zealanders are overweight or obese. Prevention is every-thing.”To request a collection gumboot for your business email shawn [email protected]

Airport to be expandedNelson Airport is planning an extension of its current termi-nal on the back of studies that show the region is in for more growth. The airport has started adver-tising for an architect to join the Nelson Airport team and airport design consultants, to develop a design for the exten-sion. The project will aim to

Arts festival attracts 30,000, costs $632,550Around 11,400 tickets were bought to 77 different shows – 47 of them sell-outs – at this year’s Nelson Arts Festival, making it one of the most popular in its 20 year history.Ticket sales accounted for $180,000 of the arts festival budget, with an-other $240,000 coming from rate-payers, $147,000 from sponsorship and grants and $65,550 from ad-vertising and bar revenue. All up the festival cost $632,550.Nelson City Council, organisers of the festival, say around 30,000 people attended at least one event during the festival. The most popular event was the masked pa-rade, where around 20,000 either watched or took part. The council says nearly 3000 chil-dren experienced a festival show through the schools’ programme and another 1500 performed on Stage One.The festival closed last Monday after 12 jam-packed days of thea-tre, music, writers’ talks, commu-nity events, art installations, school performances and workshops, in venues across the region. Ticket sales are still being counted

but figures are tracking at around 11,400 sales, up on about 10,500 last year.Community Services deputy chair Gaile Noonan says, through its free and ticketed events, the festival touches a broad cross-section of Nelsonians like no other event. “The Nelson Arts Festival is a sig-nificant Council investment that sets our city apart from others as it’s the only annual regional arts festival. The support it continues to receive every year is testament to a region that embraces arts, creativ-ity and has a strong sense of com-munity. “I want to thank the community for their ongoing support and par-ticipation in this year’s festival, and the generous sponsorship from lo-cal businesses, which is essential for running the event.“With 77 ticketed shows and a raft of free events packed into the pro-gramme, a huge effort was required by the festival team and crew.” This was the last festival for Nelson Arts festival director Sophie Kelly, who says she’s thrilled her final programme was well received.

Nelson will come alive with the sound of music this Thursday, when musicians tickle the ivo-ries of two new street pianos that will become permanent fixtures in the city.Street pianos are found on streets in cities and towns throughout the world, where they are available to be played by members of the public. Ear-lier this year, a street piano was rolled out in Richmond’s Sun-dial Square, and this Thursday Nelson follows suit with two new street pianos being offi-cially rolled out beside the Nel-son Provincial Museum and the Hardy Street Sprig & Fern.Nelson musicians, Pete Rainey, Neville Claughton and Joe Rifi-ci, will play at the official launch of the pianos which have been permanently gifted to the city. They were purchased by a Nel-son business that wishes to re-

main anonymous and provided by Neville Claughton’s Selwyn Place music store, Mr Music.Neville, Joe and music enthusi-ast, Joe Gibbons, are the prime movers behind the project.

“The idea is to make Nelson more fun,” Neville says. “Music speaks to the kid in everyone. “The pianos are there for any-one to use, beginner or profes-sional, serious or casual, doesn’t matter.” Joe Rifici, who initiated the pro-ject to get street pianos in Nel-son, says so many people have had piano lessons and the street piano will give them a chance “to inspire and be inspired”. “It’s great to be involved in this. It’s very heart-warming.” One of the pianos has also been brightly painted by Nelson art-ist, Rebecca Wilson, while both are mounted on trolleys, made by Newport Engineering, so they can be moved indoors at night or when it is wet. The museum piano will roll out at midday followed by the Sprig & Fern piano at 6:30 pm.Everyone is welcome to attend.

Hundreds of locals picked up a total of 3.93 tonnes of rubbish from Cable Bay to Tonga Marine Reserve, during the annual Big Beach Clean-up on Saturday. The biggest community conservation project in the region is organised by the Department of Conservation in partnership with Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nelmac. It includes the clean-up of approximately 50 beaches within the Nelson and Tasman area. Last year, over 350 volunteers collected 3.5 tonnes of rubbish from an astounding 293 kilometres of beach between Cable Bay and Abel Tasman. The amount of rubbish picked up has decreased since 2010, when 10.489 tonnes was collected.Nelson and Tasman individuals, businesses, sports clubs and community groups were encouraged to get involved in the event, with each group responsible for organising their team’s rubbish collection. The clean-up allows the community to come together and

many groups involved enjoy the social aspect of the day.Stoke Tahunanui Rotary Club has been involved in the Big Beach Clean Up for five years, looking after the Monaco area.“We’ve always done this beach in that time, we just keep doing it because it’s one of our annual events we do as the Rotary Club in the community. It’s important to keep our beaches clean, it happens right across the area and we just want to do our bit to help keep the area clean,” says Michael Fox from Stoke Tahunanui Rotary Club.Rubbish-free beaches enhance the lifestyle of people and help protect our wildlife. Rope, packing strap, fishing line and netting can tangle seabirds and sea life, making it difficult for them to feed. Plastic bags and wrapping can be ingested by birds and whales, mistaking them for food, and can cause them slow and painful deaths.

Members of the Nelson Musical Theatre, Keith Marshall, Chris Hyman, Richard Tidmarsh, Neil Deans and Doug Nottage, surprised shoppers at Richmond Mall on Saturday with a performance from their upcoming show “Oh, What A Lovely War!”, which will be playing at the Theatre Royal, November 11 to 22. Photo: Monique Bergman.

Shop ‘n Win is underwayShop ‘n Win – the competition that gives $5000 to one lucky shopper – is now open.Nelson Weekly advertising man-ager, Sue Davies, says there has al-ready been a great response from the public. “Last year there were over 70,000 entries, and judging by the enthusiasm with which it’s been received, we wouldn’t be surprised if it exceeds that this year,” she says. Shop ‘n Win is run by Waimea Weekly, Richmond Mall and the participating businesses, and gives one lucky shopper a chance to win $5000 for Christmas, a wel-come addition to the festive season

funds. All shoppers need to do is purchase something from one of the participating stores and fill out an entry form. The business also has a chance to win with $2000 up for grabs, and the icing on the cake, $2500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers, set to be given away half-way through the five week promotion. Selected stores in Richmond and the Rich-mond Mall are taking part, a full list of the retailers can be found in this issue. Shop ‘n Win will be running until November 30, so there is plenty of opportunity to go into the draw.

The president of Grey Power, Neville Male, says he will continue in the role, despite pressure from the organisation’s volunteers for him to step down.Three weeks ago, Nelson Weekly received a phone call saying there was unrest at Grey Power and that Neville should step down. This came after a staff member in the Grey Power office was told her job was no longer needed. Since then, volunteers of the organisation say they are not valued by

the president. This week, Neville issued a statement saying those claims are “simply not correct”.“Since I have been president there has been a major emphasis on bringing this organisation into the modern world and we are moving into the last phase of this now. It was the unanimous decisions of the Associations Management Committee that have paved the way for change to take place. “As president I am the front person for

the association and accept that I have to take criticism from time to time. It goes with the job and with over 9000 members I can’t be seen to be right in the eyes of all of them,” he says.He says at a meeting of the management committee last week it was decided to write to each of the volunteers and covey the committee’s apologies for any “misunderstanding”, and to invite them to meet with the management committee.

Getting a close-up look at SPCA’s animalsThe SPCA delighted both adults and children with some of the cutest animals around at its open day on Saturday. From pony rides, llamas, a pig called Muck and a goat named Hazel, to the more unusual, including a baby brushtailed possum and a blue tongue lizard, their annual open day was the perfect chance for the public to see why the organisation is so important. The event wasn’t about adoptions or raising money, it was simply a chance for people to come along, meet the animals and learn more about the local SPCA staff and how they operate in our community. It was also the lead-in to the SPCA’s annual Paws Appeal Week. For those who enjoyed the SPCA open day and want to help keep their good work going, donate to one of their stands when you see them this week.

Grace Wiegand loves art. She loves to sketch, loves to paint and especially loves to design. So it’s rather fortunate that she’s exceptionally good at it.So good in fact, she’s been picked from hundreds of applicants from around New Zealand, as a finalist in the Pinna-cle Programme, and is in with a chance of winning a unique scholarship to make a career from her art.Grace, 15, will now head to the Spirit of Adventure and Outward Bound courses with some of the other 20 finalists, be-fore the group gets whittled down to just four. Those four will get a scholar-ship, tailored to help them succeed in their chosen discipline.A modest Grace says she is delighted to have had her application picked and hopes that the experience will help her grow in confidence and ability.“I’ve always loved art and over the years its developed into something that is more than a hobby, it’s a passion, and I’d love to have someone who can teach me more about it.”The Pinnacle Programme started in 2005 by Hyundai New Zealand and is open to people aged from 15 to 18. It started as a sports foundation and its aim was to help the country’s most talented young people. But it has since been opened up to talented teens from arts, academics, science, business and sport.Although Grace has already been se-lected as a finalist, there are opportuni-ties for other young Nelsonians to apply

to the foundation, and Bowater Hyun-dai is hosting an information evening on the programme at its showroom on Rutherford St. There to speak will be Grace, former Silver Fern Bernice Mene and Mike Allsop.Jayne Collier from Bowater Hyundai says the information evening is a great opportunity for those who want to get some help realising their dreams, and

she says Grace is proof that locals can foot it with the best in the country. “It’s a fantastic programme and it’s great that it really is for our most talented. It’s really for those who have the passion, determination, potential and talent,” says Jayne. The information evening is being held from 5.30pm to 7pm, on November 13. Local chef behind latest food trend

Nelson College student Kyle Ormsby leads Monro House during the House Haka competition, which could be heard all around the Nelson College area, on Friday. Rutherford House won the competition, which gives it points in the overall house competition, held throughout the year. Photo: Andrew Board.

Known for their health benefits, naturally fermented foods are making a comeback as more people are turning away from a diet of high-sugar and high-refined foods.Long before probiotics became popular, naturally fermented foods were an essential part of the diet in many cultures throughout history. Nelson-based chef and nutrition consultant, Nicola Galloway, is an advocate and believes there is a food trend towards people going back to using old

cooking techniques for their well-being. Lactic acid fermentation is a traditional method of fermenting vegetables for long storage with the assistance of lactic acid. It is among the most common methods of fermenting and one of the easiest to do at home. More well-known fermented foods are Kimchi, a traditional fermented Korean delicacy made from vegetables and cabbage dish Sauerkraut.“The word ferment can put people off but

these foods taste good, pro-biotic pills are one way to improve your health but being a foodie, I like getting the benefits through food. The process is easier than you think, it takes time for the foods to ferment but not

much time to cook and prepare,” Nicola says.Fermented foods are known to aid the

digestibility of vegetables such as cabbage, and increase vitamin levels. The process also produces enzymes which encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Nicola is currently running natural fermentation workshops and is looking to hold future workshops in Nelson early next year. For further information on workshop dates, please refer to her website www.homegrown-kitchen.co.nz

Bridge Club turns 60 Nelson Bridge Club secretary Judy Rickard-Hall plays a hand during one of the club’s games last week. Photo: Andrew Board.

For decades the Nelson Bridge Club has been a hub for fierce but friendly competition and it will celebrate that this Sunday when the club reaches its 60th anniversary. The club was founded in 1954 and originally occupied Mabin House on Nile St before the club moved to its current, purpose-built, premises on Haven Rd, opposite Anzac Park, in 1993.The club has around 200 members who meet up to five times a week to play bridge, a popular card game.To celebrate 60 years, the club will

host an afternoon tea and unveil a new garden built for the occasion this Sunday, November 9.President Ruth Allison says in the early days playing bridge was quite a formal affair with men wearing dinner suits and the women in an evening dress. “Bridge is a fiercely competitive game but our club promote positive partnerships and pleasant playing among its members,” she says.At the afternoon tea will be Richard Harris, the son of the first president of the club, life members and past member Hastings Bullock, who is 100.

Victory Community has a new drinking fountain. The Victory Community Association fundraised for the new fountain at Victory Square, which also has with a filling nozzle for drink bottles or dog bowls. The association also received a grant from Nelson City Council and the fountain was installed by Nelmac.VCA coordinator Trish Walshe says the fountain was a popular choice.“The Association felt, with the community feedback they had received through canvassing, and with the sports teams, cyclists, and events being held regularly in the park, free filtered water would be appreciated by everyone especially in the coming summer months.”

Speed zones around schools:I hear the city council is talk-ing about a single lane going

past Auckland Point School, but I am puzzled why the school does not have speed signs there during the times chil-dren arrive and depart. We seem to have these signs in most of Nelson but not on this busy part of Nelson's highway. Maybe our councillors can tell Nelson people why this school, on one of the Nelson busiest roads has missed out? G Barker.

Should fireworks be banned?Yes, or at least restricted. Was on phone to police/fire last night

with some inconsiderate people letting off between 11pm and mid night in very blustery conditions! We're restricted to two weeks for buying, so why is it that there are no restrictions on when we can let off. Should need a permit if hav-ing for a birthday or special occasion and none let off after 11pm, especially in built-up areas. Jacinda Stevenson.

Yes, unfortunately, as a small minority have ruined it for the

responsible people. Around our area fireworks go off all hours of the night, 12 months of the year. John Sauer.

No, I think public should be allowed to use them but they

should only be for sale for one day or two, and more restrictions, so they only get used on the one day. If they get banned it would be great to have some nice firework displays on the day. Eva Stryder.

It's a hard one as there is always the minority who can't fol-

low the rules. As an owner of dogs, I'd like to see them banned from personal use. As a mother, I think if you really want your kids to experience fireworks take them to an arranged event. They are usually much more dramatic, and hopefully, much safer. Holland-Potts Property.

Yes we have someone in the Wood who lets them off all year

and always at around 2 a.m, waking everybody who is a light sleeper. Brenda Kenny.

Definite YES! We lost our beau-tiful cat two years ago on Guy

Fawkes night. Wendy Thomas.

I think designated areas, nights and times should be manda-

tory for public use of fireworks with, perhaps, a fireman or other appointed safety person to supervise. Anything or anytime other than that should be ille-gal. There are so many stupid idiots who have no idea how to use them safely and

even less idea on how to model to their children to be safe around fireworks. Sharon Tarapipi Pi.

Yes yes yes!!! Have organised displays. Then, hopefully, less

accidents. And kinder to animals!! Laschelle Walker.

Yes, organised public events, one on Guy Fawkes night out at

sea. Donna Jan.

Sadly, there are too many idiots ruining it for everyone else and

I think the time has come for organised public displays only. Heard some being let off last night in the strong wind and all I could think was "brain-dead idiots" (to put it mildly)!!! Tania Preston Brunell.

Late night shopping:Come out and enjoy the sum-mer evening tomorrow night,

with Late Night on Hardy and Art By Night. From 5pm - 8pm you can visit many boutique stores, restaurants and cafes, art galleries and artist studios around the city.Uniquely Nelson.

A new stock effluent disposal facility is be-ing constructed at Three Brothers Corner near Richmond, in a joint initiative be-tween Nelson City Council and New Zea-land Transport Agency.Stock effluent disposal facilities are re-quired around the country because of the hazards posed by effluent spilling onto roads from stock trucks. NZTA's Mark Owen says there weren't any suitable sites around Nelson, so they approached the Tasman District Council about locating

the facility on the former scrap metal site near Richmond.Mark says a number of sites in Nelson were considered but then discounted due either to their location, the need to acquire land or the cost of disposing of effluent. He says the preferred site at Three Brothers corner is already owned by NZTA and it is on the route from Golden Bay to Marlborough which is extensively used by stock trucks. The TDC operates a stock effluent dispos-al facility just outside Murchison which ca-

ters for stock movements from the south. The effluent will be trucked regularly from the transfer station to the Fittal Street dis-

posal station.Mark says the region's roads need to be kept clean because hitting spilled efflu-ent on the road "can be like hitting an oil slick—especially for cyclists and people on motorbikes".“Getting this new facility in place will greatly reduce the risk of spilled effluent for everyone using Nelson’s roads."The facility, which is being built by Fulton Hogan and is expected to cost $500,000, is due to be completed around February.

It’s not spring without a good gala and St Joseph’s have a celebration of the warm weather, school tal-ent and old school tradi-tions that will make your weekend. This year St Joseph’s School have really tried to go back to their roots and put on a spectacular, traditional gala with all the trimmings.

They have also made it their priority to create a family friendly event that will en-tertain everyone, no matter how old or young. There are so many great stalls and activities to enjoy at St Joseph’s Gala; you won’t know where to start. Don’t miss out on the pony rides and plate smashing, funky hair, the Noddy Train,

treasure dig, haunted house, obstacle course, and chocolate wheel. Plus plenty for the adults with food stalls including some deli-cious Italian pizza, the famous St Joseph gar-den stall, white elephant and of course, quality coffee. That is by no means all of what’s on offer but you’ll have to

come and see for yourself what else is available. The intermediate children will have their own stalls too as part of a class unit on cre-ating a business. Come and see the hard work that has gone in to planning, creat-ing and marketing their fun games and activities. The

entertainment will also be a display of the local talent, almost like St Joseph’s got talent, with performances by syndicates and solo acts from the school and com-munity. They have some amazing raffles up for grabs with first prize featuring a family trip

Charity auction raises $13,000 for school kids

Discover NZ Campervan owner, Tony Terrell, donated the use of a campervan for ten days around the South Island to the Walk with Us charity auction. Getting the keys is winner of the auction, June Ferguson, as trustees from Walk with Us watch on. Photo: Andrew Board.

Spurred on by a stirring speech from Stoke School principal Pete Mitchener, June Ferguson was happily the highest bid-der for a campervan trip at the Walk with Us charity auction last week. The auction raised $13,000 in total for the trust, which gives school or sports shoes to needy students from various local schools. The main auction item was a ten day trip around the South Island in a camper-

van from Discover NZ. June, of Stoke, bid $1500 for it as a surprise 60th birthday present for her husband. But having a photo in the paper meant she had to confess to the auction win and ruin the surprise. "He was happy, though," she says.Trust president Carole Shirley says the auction was a huge success and the trust wanted to thank Nelson for supporting it."We were pretty impressed with how much we raised, and

we're now looking at widen-ing the number of schools that we go to because we now have enough money to go further."Currently, the trust will ac-cept applications for shoes from Auckland Point, Victory, Birchwood, Stoke, Henley and Wakefield schools.Stoke School principal Pete Mitchener spoke emotionally at the auction about the joy and pride the shoes give the stu-dents.

Proud to support Nelson College for Girls Gateway programme

Ph: 546 [email protected]

The Nelson College for Girls Gateway pro-gram is a great opportunity for the school’s students to gain vital skills in preparation for life after school. It also allows them to decide whether their chosen industry is something they want to continue studying towards. Gateway has been operating in the college for six years now and has helped many students sort out their plans for a future career. The first term of the programme fo-cuses on general skills required for the workplace, including communi-cating with the public and learning how to approach interviews, while terms two and three are spent com-pleting specific industry unit stand-ards with half-day work placements once a week. This can be anything they are inter-ested in, from early child care and teaching to equine work, graphic de-sign, business management, gaming and websites. “The students have an idea of what they think they would like to do when they leave school, and then we try and set up a work placement as close as possible to what they have chosen,” says Gateway Co-ordinator Alex Coombs-King. “They either love it and think, 'yes, this is definitely my career pathway', or they’ll decide they don’t want to do it, which is also positive.”

Nelson College for Girls student Shelby Winter was one of this year’s Gateway par-ticipants who received a successful result from her placement at Health Kids. Her interest in the early child care industry has been cemented thanks to her work place experience, and has helped her make the decision to work specifically with young

children who have autism. The Gateway programme is not only an option for those looking to start in the workplace straight after school, but is suitable for students who are unsure of a career path, have already chosen to go to

university or to NMIT. “It gives them an idea of what is out there, as well as job opportunities if they want to leave school, and it’s important because it gives them an understanding of the big wide world and what the job actually en-tails,” says Alex. Students have to apply for the program

and go through an interview process before a certain number are selected. “It is very successful in helping stu-dents. Probably two-thirds of this year’s intake are either going on to study in that industry, or are going to university or NMIT, with some of the others returning because they were year 12.” Gateway is also a great opportunity for businesses. Not only can they pass on their knowledge to students looking to join their industry, there is the added bonus of future employ-ees and having someone who can perform jobs around the workplace that are often neglected. Their time and effort towards the programme are greatly appreciated by the school and the students.

Businesses who are interested in being a part of the Nelson College for Girls Gate-way program can contact Alec Coombs-King on 548 3104, ext 858 or email her at [email protected].

Shelby Winter found a successful placement with Health Kids preschool to complete her Gateway course, and has decided to further her career in early childhood education.

Marchfest is Nel-son and New Zealand's unique craft beer festival - a celebra-tion of music, food, fun and of course, proper beer. The 8th MarchFest will take place at Founders Park on Saturday March 21st, 2015, with an amazing lineup of brand new lo-cal beers and live music from Sola Rosa, Brockaflowersau-rus Rex, Jordie Lane, California Dreamers, The Saints and The Radtones.Every year around 15 regional craft breweries sign up to produce a brand new beer especially for the event. The Nelson region is New Zealand’s sole hop-growing area – and has more craft breweries per head of the population than anywhere else in the country. Top of the South brewer-ies include Dale's, Dead Good, Founders, Golden Bear, Hop

Federation, Lighthouse, McCashins, Moa, Mussel Inn, Re-naissance, Sprig and Fern, Totara, Townshends, West Coast, 8Wired and more. Unlike other beer festivals, MarchFest is not just about beer. It’s also about local wines, ciders, regional cuisine (including a beer and food matching lunch), amazing music acts and a family-friendly day out. A winning combi-nation that attracts thousands of people each year! Tickets on sale from 1 Dec at www.marchfest.com (U18s free entry with a parent/guardian)

Located in Riwaka, in the idyllic Top Of The South, Hop Federation is surrounded by hop growers and orchards, and also just a stone’s throw from our beaches, national parks and

lots of great recreational destinations that the re-gion is famous for. Hop federation is still in its infancy, having only been established in 2013, but they are seriously dedicated to the art and craft of brewing, and this has paid dividends with their recent Bronze Medal in the US Ales category at the 2014 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards, for their Golden. The friendly staff would love to help you appreciate the subtleties and complexities of their craft beers by offer-ing free tastings of everything in their range, and they enjoy chatting with you about them and hearing your feedback. Feel free to pop in or give them a call 03-5280486, they are open 7 days a week, 11am to 6pm.

Founders Heritage Parks’ newest attrac-tion is the Hop & Beer Museum that tells a tale of regional significance, featuring brewers and hop growers dating as far

back as the 1840s.The museum is set out in three rooms: The Hop Kiln: The raised Hop Kiln-shaped roof creates a landmark for the park. Visitors feel as though they are en-tering an actual kiln as they step inside and gaze up at the impressive dome of the fully sarked raised ceiling. This room shows how the hops are dried ready for processing and Nel-son hop-picking stories are told.

The Brew House: As visitors walk into this room, objects from the park’s collection dem-onstrate early brewing pro-cesses, including original vats, bottle labellers and cooling systems. The Office: This room tells of the history of Nelson’s local brewing companies. The sto-ries include the roots of our region’s brewing families, the

related soda siphon industry, and the impact of Nelson hops on national and international markets.Free for locals, including Tasman residents. Opens from No-vember 26th, 2014.

Blacksticks to play in NelsonThe New Zealand men's hockey team is coming to Nelson to play two test matches against Canada in early December. The games were confirmed by Hockey New Zealand yesterday afternoon and will see the Blacksticks play on December 9 and 10 at Saxton Field, before heading to Christchurch for the third and fourth tests in the four match series.

It is the first time a full international hock-ey test will be played at Saxton Field and the first time the men's side have played in Nelson since 1952.

That game was played at Trafalgar Park against India and featured Nelson player Fred (Ted) Gribble. The Blacksticks women's side played at Saxton Field in 2009 but it was against an Indian Invitational side and was not classed as a test match.John Whiting from Hockey New Zealand says it's nice to be able to give test match-

es to the regions and, in this case, they've been able to do it because of support from Nelson City Council. "Definitely over the past few years the smaller communities are the ones that really get behind it and we're hoping that will be the case in Nelson with some big crowds."The two tests will start at 6pm and ticket prices will be released later this week.

Nelson's top road cyclist, George Bennett, is back home for his annual summer break after a season that produced a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows both on and off the road. The season started full of promise after George signed with one of the top teams on the professional tour, Cannondale, at a time when many teams were cutting budg-ets and riders. George was also looking ahead to Commonwealth Games selection and the distinct possibility of racing in his first Tour de France after making his grand tour debut in the Giro Italia last year. But things didn't go to plan with crashes,

illness and contractual issues making 2014 his "toughest season" in six years of profes-sional cycling. "I didn’t get the big breakthrough I had dreamed about in January," George says. "I made some big gains but the things that could have gone either way never fell in my direction."The Vuelta (Espana) was a perfect exam-ple. I couldn't believe I was in the top 10 af-ter four stages and then it all came undone with three miserable days."I got caught in the cross-wind one day, tried to make up for it with some loose tactics the next and then crashed the fol-

lowing day and lost 15 minutes. My gen-eral classification ambitions dissolved very quickly - that race summed up my whole season really."George says pulling out of the Common-wealth Games due to illness and missing out on a place in next year's Cannondale team after it merged with Garmin Sharp were also low points of the season. However, the season did include some highlights and George says the team time trial in the Vuelta, when Cannondale fin-ished second, was at the top of the list. He also enjoyed a good start to the season, im-pressing in the Tour of California where he

was placed in the top 10 before crashing in the final stage.Securing a new contract with Dutch team, LottoNL, also ensured the season had a happy ending. George says Lotto is "one of the most progressive teams in world cy-cling and has some super-strong GC riders there for me to ride for and learn from."George's first race for his new team will be the Tour Down Under in Australia from January 17 to 25. He also plans to line up in the Tour de Vineyards around the Tasman district starting on December 30 and the national championships in Christchurch on January 9.

George Bennett is back in Nelson after a tough season on the road in the Pro Tour.

Top road cyclist back in town

From the beginning of last week the Tasman District Commander Superintendent Richard Chambers took up a new position as Auck-land City District Commander, putting him in charge of one of the busiest Police Districts in the country. Superintendent Chambers came to Tasman in January 2012 and guided the District through a period of significant change, not least of which was the introduc-tion of mobile technology. Today the sight of a Police Officer doing their work on an iPad or iPhone has become common place, but it brought a significant change in the way we do our business. Officers can now stay out on the streets and still complete their administrative work, checks on vehicles and checks on mem-bers of the public. It's hard to imagine Policing without ready access to information via mo-bile technology now. The appointment process for Superintendent Chambers' replacement is now under way and in the interim we have De-tective Inspector Karyn Malthus as the Acting District Commander.

Downhill mountainbikers go big on Broken Axe trackKieran Bennett showed he still knows the fastest way down Nel-son's downhill tracks, Broken Axe and Kaka, when he domi-nated the Nelson Mountainbike Club's Top of the South downhill double-header at the weekend.Kieran, who was Nelson's fast-

est downhiller before moving to Christchurch several years ago, smoked down Broken Axe on Saturday in two minutes 57 sec-onds, before clocking 3mins flat on Kaka on Sunday for a com-bined time of 5min 57sec. That was 13 seconds faster than

second-placed Nathan Hewetson and 20 faster than third-placed Ethan Helliwell. "These are his home tracks really and he was streets ahead of everybody else," one of the event organisers, Ol-ivia Johnston, says. Nelson's Raewyn Morrison was

the fastest woman recording 4min 2sec on Broken Axe and 4min 9sec on Kaka to finish two seconds ahead of Jo Perrott and four clear of Olivia. Master 1 men was won by Hayden Mckay in 6min 2sec, masters 2 was won by Damon Trenwith in

3min 36sec (one run), Sam Gale won the under-15 in 7min 3sec, Maliena Grey won the girls un-der-17 in 5min 6sec (one run), Oscar Perks won the boys un-der-17 in 6min 20sec while Sam Todd won the under-19 boys in 6min 25sec.
