PetroVietnam Domestic Exploration Production Operating Company Ltd. (PVEP POC), working in offshore Vietnam, deployed the FASTrak™ logging-while-drilling (LWD) fluid analysis sampling and testing service while drilling a deviated S-profile well offshore Vietnam. Ordinarily, a well of this type would require pipe-conveyed wireline fluid sampling, adding rig days and increasing the risk of stuck pipe.

Challenges included establishing individual pressure gradients and collecting formation fluid samples over thin bed successions (centimeter to meter scale), with variable mobility, and potentially different reservoir fluids days after the well had initially been drilled. Additionally, inherent depth uncertainties in the measurements could affect the fluid gradient.

The excellent repeatability of the pressures enabled adjusting formation tops by reconciliation to pressure profiles. The reconciliation process could only be achieved by taking several pressure tests in a single run. Sixty tests were taken during the single run—an industry record among competing technologies in the marketplace.

The process enabled high-quality grading and a selection of representative sampling locations. The Baker Hughes SmartPad™ closed loop sealing system prevented lost seals during the pressure testing and sampling operation, enabling the acquisition of 6 oil samples. Lab analysis indicated approximately 15% water-based mud filtrate contamination, which was comparable to wireline runs in the same formation.

The operational efficiency and excellent sample quality achieved by this first deployment of the FASTrak service in the Southeast Asia market saved PVEP POC an estimated USD 2.2 million.
