Welcome Message from the EDTNA/ERCA PresidentDear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great honor that I welcome you to the 44th EDTNA/ERCA International Conference taking place in Dresden, Germany, 26th–29th September 2015.

This year’s Conference theme is: “Quality and safety in Renal Care: Shared Responsibility among Health Care Professionals and Patients”. We hope to achieve a high level of quality care for patients and their families through:

• Developing and continually updating renal care standards & guidelines • Promoting the advancement of renal care through education and continuous professional development • Creating awareness for our Members of social, cultural and ethical implications involved in the provision of renal care • Initiating, promoting and conducting research in the renal care field

The Scientific Programme provides an excellent platform for us to share multi-disciplinary expertise, transfer knowledge, promote innovation that enhances practice and in turn improves patient care. An excellent number of scientific sessions, Industry sponsored sessions, especially workshops and posters were submitted, giving the opportunity for knowledge to be shared with experts in the field. A visit to the poster area is an excellent opportunity to discuss different topics with the authors in greater depth. The Scientific Programme will allow you to increase your knowledge through interaction during the Conference with other participants and the many experts presenting research from around the world.

You will have the unique opportunity to meet colleagues from many countries, exchange knowledge and experiences and share the way patients and their families are the main focus, in their daily practice.

In addition, you will have the unique opportunity to visit an exciting exhibition covering the most up to date technology and research in renal care. This exhibition is supported by our industry partners who have collaborated with us for many years with great results. I especially want to thank all of the people who have worked tirelessly with great skills and patience to facilitate this year’s Conference.

At the same time you can explore the beautiful and historical city of Dresden and learn about aspects of its history. I sincerely hope that you will have a memorable time.

I look forward welcoming you to the beautiful city of Dresden!

With kind regards

Electronic LibraryEDTNA/ERCA Consultants are working on papers for the Electronic Library as an educational resource for Health Care Professionals (HCP).

The purpose of this ongoing project, led by Karen Jenkins and Lesley Bennett, is to create easily accessible educational materials at 3 education levels: ranging from advanced to expert and to make them available online for all EDTNA/ERCA members. Ultimately, we want to ensure that all members have access to practical information related to their respective fields and also to be able put to the test newly gained knowledge by means of learning outcomes and critical questions available at the end of each paper.

If you’re not currently a member of EDTNA/ERCA, register now and gain access to a wide range of education materials that can greatly benefit you in your clinical practice.

New: Four new papers in the Electronic Library:• Anaemia of Chronic Kidney Disease (advanced level)• Detecting and treating malnutrition in People with Chronic Kidney Disease (advanced level)• Managing Change: the challenge for renal leaders (advanced level)• Leadership in the Renal Unit (advanced level)

Notably, we were concerned about the very considerable time it took the European Commission to adopt its proposal for a recast of the Tobacco Products Directive. We also observe that a proposal for nutrient profiles in the context of the nutrition and health claims regulation has not yet been published, despite being planned for January 2009. We are above all awaiting a strong political signal on chronic diseases from the European Commission: a proposal for a European Union Strategy and Action Plan on Chronic Diseases, including recommendations to address the major health risk factors: poor nutrition, alcohol and tobacco consumption and physical inactivity. We look forward to seeing substantial progress before the end of your second term. We are sure you are aware of the burden of chronic diseases and the impact it has not only on people but on the economy. To emphasise and highlight the necessity to take action on the matter, here are some figures:

up to 40% of the EU population aged over 15 report a long-standing health problem related to chronic diseases

up to 80% of health-care expenses are allocated to chronic diseases – in other words costs of

chronic diseases are in the billions of euros every year; cardiovascular diseases alone are estimated to cost the EU economy 196 billion euros (health and non-health costs) every year

chronic diseases to cost the world $ 47 trillion by 2030 in lost output.

It is also worth noting that although the European Union has a high average life expectancy, namely 79.4 years, healthy life years expectancy is 61.45 years. This difference of 18 years is not a positive sign for governments wishing to postpone retirement age until 65 years of age or older! There is still time to pick up the chronic disease challenge and reverse the alarming projections of chronic diseases and the downward trend in the number of people in the workforce by 2020. To do so, prevention of chronic diseases must be placed right up there next to the prevention of economic ill health. We are ready to help. Yours faithfully, The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) The European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) The European COPD Coalition (ECC) The European Heart Network (EHN) The European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA) The European Respiratory Society (ERS) The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) The European Society of Hypertension (ESH) The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) The International Diabetes Federation Europe (IDF-Europe)

Open Letter to Mr. José Manuel Barroso President European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 1049 Brussels

Brussels, 14 May 2013 Dear President Barroso, We are the European Chronic Disease Alliance (ECDA) – an alliance of 10 organisations representing over 100,000 health professionals and millions of patients. We write to you again now because we are concerned about the lack of political will with regard to chronic diseases from the leadership of the European Union. This is notwithstanding the ground-breaking political declaration that Heads of State adopted in September 2011 during the General Assembly of the United Nations on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. Not to mention – closer to home – the EU Council Conclusions on

(2010) and the European Parliament’s Resolution (2011)1. 25 by 25 is a target that the World Health Assembly signed up to last May (2012). It is a target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from chronic non-communicable diseases by 2025. This target is not a target for the health ministers of the world; it is a target for all politicians. The European Union will only deliver on this target if it commits to a long-term, dedicated strategy for the prevention of chronic diseases. Without this, our citizens will continue to suffer the debilitating effects of these diseases which all too often lead to premature death. The overarching target referred to above will be accompanied by specific targets, including a 30% relative reduction in mean population intake of salt/sodium, a 10% relative reduction in harmful use of alcohol, and a 30% relative reduction in prevalence of current tobacco use in persons aged 15+ years. Policies to achieve these targets fall well within the regulatory competence of the European Union. Inaction will have disastrous outcomes – both in terms of Healthy Life Years lost and continued strains on healthcare systems. Chronic diseases cost economies immensely, through medical and social care needs, as well as through impact of premature retirement and reduced work force productivity. In a statement in August 2011, ECDA said that robust action to prevent and control chronic diseases “… will not be an emergency bailout but a long-term investment in the most valued primary resource: people Presiding over an economic downturn is difficult but EU initiatives and legislative measures have great potential to help reversing chronic diseases (meeting the targets referred to above). 1 of 15 September 2011 on European Union position and commitment in advance to the UN high-level meeting on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases D.

Public TransportationDresden has a very well-structured public transport system. It is possible to use trams, buses, commuter railways, ferries or taxis in Dresden. For longer trips there is also the railway system.

There are 12 tram lines and 28 bus lines through the city area, running every 10 minutes during the day. Public transport in Dresden is running 24 hours 7 days a week. During the nights and weekends there is reduced public transport. Public transportation timetables can be found on Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG public transport company and on their web-www.dvb.de (German, English). On their website the companies display the entire network, all timetables and connections. You can plan your journey according to your own individual requirements here. The web-site also provides information about the prices of tickets and where they can be purchased. You can also find information about departure times at every bus or tram stop. You can buy tickets at the stops, on the trams or buses and at service points. You must then stamp your tickets in the machines on the vehicle. If you use public transport often, it is advisable to buy a multiple-trip ticket, a monthly ticket or a yearly ticket. Do not ride without a ticket as checks are often made. If you are caught without a valid ticket you’ll have to pay a fine.

Most important sights at a glanceDresden carries visitors away with a synthesis of the arts: fascinating buildings and art treasures, impressive museums, as well as orchestras and choirs of worldwide reputation.

Dresden offers attractions in great variety and combines three aspects which complement one another: notable art treasure, architectural sights and a charming landscape. Magnificent promenades on the bank of the Elbe, interesting museums and institutions, industrial monuments, charming details. A trip to Dresden is always a great experience.

Granted, none of the seven wonders of the ancient world are to be found in Dresden. Back then, the river was probably still busy sculpting the natural features of the local sandstone. The wait was rewarded with a magnificent landscape, but in later times, the Elbe valley saw such a blossoming of architectural and artistic brilliance that the visitor today forgets to count and can only rub his eyes in wonder.

The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), Royal Palace, Zwinger, Semper Opera House, Elbe castles, Villa Quarter, Hellerau garden city or the award-winning modern buildings – not forgetting the ‘Blue Wonder’ bridge to the east of the city centre. It seems the likes of Augustus the Strong and his successors were not prepared to wait for nature to finish the job; with their skill, artistry and determination, they filled the Grüne Gewölbe (Green Vault) and Türkische Kammer (Turkish Chamber) with treasures from all over the world, collected paintings and porcelain, and were patrons of the great composers. No wonder then that Dresden today ranks as a world-class city of art and culture.
