A Message from Fr. Rolly…

May 3, 2020

How is everybody as we start another month of social

distancing, wearing mask when getting out of the house to do

errands and staying safe at home? I certainly hope that you

are doing well. It looks like we are approaching the end of this pandemic but we

need to make sure that we do not put down our guard as we try to navigate this

“new normal” ahead of us.

This weekend, we celebrate the Liturgy of the Fourth Sunday of Easter. The liturgy

invites us to look up to Jesus, the Risen Christ, as the Good Shepherd. He assures

us that whoever comes to him will never experience rejection and indifference.

He is also like the gate where the sheep would enter and be kept safe and fed. “I

am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but

the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will

be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to

steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it

more abundantly.”

What a beautiful and assuring statement of Jesus. This is what we need at this

time of crisis. Knowing that there is a God who takes care of us, keeps us safe, is

comforting and reassuring. However, it is not enough to know this spiritual reality.

There is still something we need to do, as baptized Christians, to keep this loving

assurance of safety and security be known throughout the world. It is our spiritual

and moral responsibility to spread this good news.

I believe the challenge for us is to become instruments of God to spread this

good news. Let us try to be kind and loving to all we encounter in life, especially

during this time of pandemic. We may not be actually encountering people

physically at this time, but we can reach out virtually by using modern

technology. Let us not allow this health crisis to stifle our effort to be connected

with each other. Wish everyone well and let them know that you care and love

them. Above all, let us pray for one another. Be assured of my prayers for you as I

ask you to do same for me. I believe in a few weeks’ time we will see each other

again in church. When that time comes it will be a joyful reunion and celebration.

In the meantime, let us stay home safe and try to be healthy at all times. May

God bless us always.

Father Tino’s Corner...

Fourth Sunday of Easter In this fourth Sunday of the Easter season, the Gospel reading invites us to reflect on Jesus like the Good Shepherd. In each cycle, the reading is from the tenth chapter of the Gospel of John. This chapter establishes the framework for teaching Jesus about himself as the Good Shepherd. Today's reading falls among the stories of Jesus' healing of the

born man blind and the resurrection of Lazarus. Both stories were proclaimed in the Gospels found in this year's Lenten season. After the controversy that followed when Jesus healed the blind man, Jesus directs his allegory about the sheep and the shepherd towards the Jewish religious leaders of his time, the Pharisees. Throughout the Gospel of John, the Pharisees do not accept the ministry and teaching of Jesus. They show themselves "like real thieves" because they try to guide the sheep without entering the door. Through these comparisons, Jesus tells his listeners that those who follow him and his path will find abundant life. He identifies himself as the shepherd and the door. The shepherds who are faithful to him are the ones that the sheep (disciples of Jesus) must follow. The relationship between the sheep and their shepherd is based on familiarity. The sheep recognize their shepherd and will not follow a stranger. At the end of the day, the shepherds lead their sheep from the pastures to a common closed area called a fold. There, a shepherd protects all the sheep until the next day, when each shepherd returns to bring his own sheep to the pasture. As the shepherds move among the sheep, the sheep only follow their shepherd. Today's Gospel also gives us an opportunity to reflect on Christian leadership. Jesus' words suggest to us that those who they will lead the Christian community, will be known for their fidelity to Jesus. Leaders will recognize that Jesus is the door for all sheep and that having a good relationship with Jesus is the main characteristic of a Christian leader.

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very

fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and

also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic

vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely

defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers.

The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a

particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from

their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we

come to a profound realization of how much we need a

shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might

follow him in faith forever. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

Saint of the Week

SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES

Feast Day: May 3

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come

out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed

Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the

prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy

enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip

their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s

answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper,

finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John

14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know

me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer:

“I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s

James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says,

author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for

his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not

what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons

aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to

Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not

hearers only” (James 1:22). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. — 1 Peter 2:24a

Mensaje de nuestro parroco, Fr. Rolly…

viene a robar, a matar y a destruir.

No

SEMANA…

SANTOS FELIPE Y SANTIAGO

(Siglo I)

Festivo: 3 de mayo

Felipe nació en Bastida y fue

discípulo de Juan Bautista.

Él mismo descubrió en la

persona de Jesús al Mesías,

al anunciado en el Antiguo

Testamento y va a

comunicarlo a los demás.

Asimismo, el evangelista

pone en boca de Felipe la

falta de fe: ‘Ni doscientos

denarios (salario por un día

de trabajo) bastarían para

darle de comer a esta

multitud’. Jesús multiplica el

pan y alimenta a la multitud.

Se cree que Felipe murió

hacia el año 87 y sus restos

fueron llevados a Roma, a la

Iglesia de los Apóstoles, junto

a los de Santiago, de ahí que

la fiesta litúrgica sea el

mismo día. Santiago “el

menor” es el hijo de Alfeo y

también pertenece a los

Doce. Fue obispo de

Jerusalén a partir del año 42,

debido a la muerte de

Santiago “el mayor”. Fue él

mismo quien escribió la carta

canónica que aparece en el

Nuevo Testamento.

BEWARE:

CYBER SCAMMERS LATEST TEXT SCAMS

TARGETING ADLA SCHOOLS AND PARISHES

“Smishing” ( SMS phishing ) is a type of fraudulent activity

that involves using SMS or text messages to trick people into

giving up personal or confidential information so that money

can be fraudulently obtained. Perpetrators use various social

engineering techniques to gain the trust of a victim and

usually provide specific instructions, which if followed, usually

result in some sort of monetary loss to the victim.

Smishing is very much like phishing (email-based scams). Perpetrators will impersonate

someone you know that is in some position of authority (a priest, teacher, manager, police, or

government agency) and will advise you of some emergency or crisis that requires your

attention. They will ask (or demand) that you do something to resolve the situation (provide your

passwords, click on a link that takes you to some web site or buy a gift card and text them the

card information). They may even ask you to call them at the number they are texting from to

“verify” that they are who they say they are.

DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM. If you receive such texts do the following:

• Take time to consider your actions before responding to suspicious text messages.

• Ask yourself if the sender, if genuine, would really contact you via text.

• If in doubt, call the published main number of the parish, school or administrative office

from whom the text claims to have been sent to authenticate the text message.

• Remember that even if the text message seems to come from someone you trust, their

number may have been hacked or spoofed. Look closely at the area code of the number.

If it is not a local area code then the text may not be legitimate.

• Do not click on links in text messages unless you are 100% certain that they are genuine

and well intentioned.

• Do not respond to the text message if you doubt its origin. A response could be used as a

verification that your number is responsive to text messages and you may be inundated

with similar messages. Hackers build and sell lists of numbers to others for fraudulent

purposes.
