A) Location

• Las Canteras is on the west side of the Isthmus of Guanarteme, linking the península of la Isleta (NE) with the rest of the island.

• The beach is located to the NW in what is known as Confital bow.

• The beach is shelter from the currents of the Atlantic by a natural barrier, called La Barra.

B) A brief history about its name

• The name of the beach has been always linked to la Barra (sandstone and limestone deposites).

• It was known as the Reef beach.The barra was a stone quarry where the stone was quarried for making the Cathedral to remember this practice, today is called Las Canteras beach.

C) Areas in Las Canteras beach

• There are five main areas along Las Canteras beach, these are the following:

• 1)La Cícer-We can see the Auditorium Alfredo Kraus, the most important building in this area.

• 2)Peña La Vieja.• 3)Playa Chica.• 4)Playa Grande.• 5)La Puntilla .

D) The sand in Las Canteras: Where does it come from? Where does it go?

• The sand on the beach of Las Canteras fall mainly through the South- South East sector (area Auditorium).

• Then, especially when there are W. Or NW. Wind storms a transfer is stablished from the South- South East sector of the beach to La Puntilla area.

E) Tides • Tides are the rise and fall of

sea levels, caused by the combined effects of the gravitatonal forces exerted by the moon and the sun and the rotation of the Earth.

• The tides change depending on were the sun and the moon are.

• High tide -It is the rise of sea level(Picture up).

• Low tide –It is the fall of sea level (Picture down).

F) Blue flag

• The blue flag is an award for environmental quality developed by F.E.E. (Foundation for Evironmental Education in Europe-European Commission)

• It is awarded to communities that make a special effort to keep beaches clean.Itwas born in 1982.

G) Some tips to care for our beaches (Las Canteras beach)

• 1)Dump organic waste in bins on the beach.• 2)Avoid breaking glass.• 3)Carry your on bag the trash.• 4)Be aware that the sea is an the beaches are

not public bathrooms.• 5)Don’t capture any species in the sea.• 6)Protect seabirds.• 7)Don’t carry any species from National Parks.
