of the two cities was always meant tohappen.

With grand fanfare Mayor NormanS. Edelcup and the City Commissiondid not spare any effort to impress theTaormina delegation with what SunnyIsles Beach has to offer. On the firstnight the delegation was invited to adinner event where the Taormina del-egation presented an impressive his-torical architecture and contemporarylife video of Taormina. Following thepresentation gifts were exchanged.

In fact the delegation was so takenby their great impressions of our City, that Dino Papale, who is also a jour-nalist, wrote daily articles about theupscale City of Sunny Isles Beach, thegracious hosts, which were publishedin the Taormina press the very nextday. One of these articles has beentranslated into English and is pub-

lished here (see right).Acting as the City’s very gracious

co-hosts were Michael Dezer, devel-oper of Trump Properties, and ElenaBaronoff, Vice President of theTrump-Dezer Group and our City’sInternational Ambassador to Europe. They gave the Taormina delegationthe grand tour of the Dezer AntiqueCar and the James Bond CarMuseum, the largest museum of itskind in the World. The delegationwas also treated to a sightseeing boattour and trips to other places in SouthFlorida.

City staff organized tours for thedelegation to the Mount Sinai MedicalCenter and the Florida InternationalUniversity Biscayne Bay Campus. The group also enjoyed the experi-ence of South Beach on famousLincoln Road which is the home of

some of the most indulgent restau-rants in the world. In short, theTaormina delegation had an unforget-table experience and as Mayor MauroPassalaqua said in his farewell speech,it will be difficult to match, when theCity of Sunny Isles Beach delegationtravels to their city this comingSeptember.

On the final night of the Taorminadelegation stay, at the farewell din-ner hosted by the City, the letters ofintent for the Sister City agreementwere signed by Mayor Norman S.Edelcup and Mayor MauroPassalaqua. In signing they haveplaced the cornerstone of what is tobecome a permanent bridge of cul-tural, social and tourism collabora-tion between the Pearl of Sicily,Taormina, and Florida’s Riviera,Sunny Isles Beach.

Rhonda had been married twice whenboth of her husbands seemed to enjoy otherwomen and giving them pretty nice giftsthat she never got. After thedivorces, she decided that maybeit would work out better for her tobe “the other woman.”

Their lives seemed better thanwhat she had gotten out of hermarriages. She was a successfulbusiness woman and all sorts ofmen dealt with her in the RealEstate field; she was very attrac-tive which helped her even more.

Over a bit of time she had a revolvingdoor of male friends that she was able tohandle quite well because they were mar-ried; much older than her and had just somuch time available to be with her. Sheliked them much older because theirdesires fit in to her schedule, after all howmuch time did it take to please someone 20or more years older?

Then much to her dismay Viagra cameon to the market. All of a sudden her three

or four sometimes lovers got themselvesrejuvenated. Here she was now with threedemanding lovers who were pretty much

stepping over each other to get toher. She had always allowed her-self time off to keep her businessgoing and properly spacing allother matters. Since she wasn’tany of their wives they were fullof ginger and always trying to gether attention and actually affect-ed her business trying to accom-modate all this with her.Something had to be done.

She decided to discuss all of this with afriend who was a psychologist. After a fewsessions and discussions she was offered apretty good solution. If she wanted marriedmen then she had to find those older mar-ried men that took Nitrates for their heartsand thus wouldn’t be able to take anythingin the Viagra classification. Her only prob-lem now with that is how she can get a lookat their medical charts before she getsinvolved?

What do you get for thecity that has just abouteverything on its 15th

anniversary? Here are somesuggestions to help cele-brate life in the City ofSunny Isles Beach wherethe best keeps on getting

better every year…

MORE PALM TREES: The city is always working in implement-

ing streetscape beautification plans, so agreat anniversary gift would be even moreswaying palm trees to complement thewhite, sandy beaches – but then again, moresand might be an even better gift since therenever seems to be enough beach renourish-ment projects!

WIDER SIDEWALKS: Wider sidewalks for pedestrian safety

would be a very practical anniversary giftfor the city – but health and fitness expertsadvocating the benefits of narrower waist-lines could protest claiming that just like

bigger burgers, wider sidewalks contributeto enabling the “supersizing of America!”

ARTS & CULTURE: A Cultural Arts Center would be a won-

derful anniversary gift for the city – andsince Sunny Isles Beach is becoming worldrenowned for being “Florida’s Riviera,” thecity might even be eligible to sing its prais-es and become the next “American Idol.”

LOTS OF NAPKINS: Shorty’s barbecue will be featured at the city’s

15th anniversary celebration - so the greatest giftwould be cases and cases of extra napkins!

THE GIFT OF “UNITY”: The old saying “every man for himself” is

becoming an antiquated notion as munici-palities like Sunny Isles Beach foster com-munity unity promoted by city sponsoredevents like the annual anniversary celebra-tion, So since “we’re all in this together,”remember to be extra nice to your neighbors– but if you don’t feel like getting then allanniversary presents that’s OK since thegreatest gift everyone already shares is aSunny Isles Beach address!

A symbol is a representation of some-thing. It stands for something else. It can bea metaphor or it can be allegorical. Symbolsare personal, cultural, and universal. Theyreflect the thoughts and emotions of thedreamer in the current moment. Each indi-vidual is the best interpreter of their ownsymbols and the meanings they hold.Symbols allow you to gain insight and tobring those things in your subconsciousmind into your conscious mind. This aware-ness helps you to understand the issues andto deal with them. Understanding your sym-bols and working with them can be quiterewarding.

Start to pay attention to your dreams.Keep a pad by your bed to jot down any-thing you remember immediately uponawakening. Notice your feelings. Are youhappy or sad, apprehensive, frightened orfrustrated? Notice your emotional responseto the people or events in your dream. Everyperson in the dream usually represents an

aspect of your personality or an aspect ofyour relationship with them. Become awareof any recurring themes in your dreams orthe repetition of a certain dream.

Invest in a book that has explanationsof the images in your dreams. It will helpyou to interpret the possible symbolic mean-ings. Choose the explanation that closelyresembles what is happening in your actuallife. There is a correlation between yourdream images and your feelings and theactivities and experiences in your wakinglife.

The symbols in your dreams provide aninsight into your psychological health. Theywill let you know how you are doing andwhere you are psychologically in the currentmoment. There is a reason you are havingthat particular dream and using those partic-ular symbols. Many therapists use dreaminterpretation to better help the patientunderstand their own personality and theirown subconscious. Interpreting the symbolsprovides a means to evaluate the individ-ual’s issues and their behavior. It can helpto foster and support the integration of theirpersonality and the healing process.

The Memoirs by Harry S. Truman (Yearsof Trial and Hope) are revealing as to thefuture State of Israel. According to Truman, his first official contact with the issue ofPalestine (Israel) took place shortly after hebecame President on the death of FDR, bySecretary of State Stettinius who “briefed”him. Truman was advised that “althoughPresident Roosevelt at times gave expressionto views sympathetic to certain Zionist aims,he also gave certain assurances to the Arabswhich they regard as definite commit-ments…there would be no decision alteringthe basic situation in Palestine without fullconsultation with both Arabs and Jews.”Truman was further advised, “In his meetingwith King Ibn Saud early in 1945, Mr.Roosevelt promised the King that as regardsPalestine, he would make no move hostile tothe Arab people and would not assist the Jewsagainst the Arabs.” On April 5, 1945, five

days before he died, FDR “signed a letter toIbn Saud repeating the assurances which hehad previously made to the King.”

Author Jim Bishop (FDR’S Last Year)provides a fascinating interpretation ofFDR’s letter. FDR, who considered himself astrong supporter of the establishment of aJewish homeland, was a very sick man in hislast year of life. He suffered from heart dis-ease, which depleted his physical and mentalfacilities. He was unable to stand up to strongadvocates. When FDR met with King Saud inearly 1945, he had hopes of “arranging for aPalestine homeland for the Jews.” The furtherRoosevelt pursued the subject, the worse hefared, as Ibn Saud had arrived prepared forthe argument, stating, “Arabs preferred to dierather than live in proximity with Jews.” “Atthis point, Roosevelt “seemed to weakenbadly, reversed himself, and promised thatthe U.S. would do nothing to assist the Jewsagainst the Arabs.” Stettinius said ofRoosevelt’s April 5, 1945 letter that he wasdisorientated and was “simply trying to pre-vent bloodshed between Arabs and Jews.”

Despite strong opposition, Truman fol-lowed through with his long-held belief in theestablishment and recognition of a Jewishhomeland.

As hurricane season 2012 approachesthere are a few things that all residentsshould be aware of:

Hurricane season runs from June 1 toNovember 30 each year.

Our City is located on a barrier island, located in Red Zone A. If a hurricane is pro-jected to strike in the vicinity of our coast-line, all barrier island communities are sub-ject to mandatory evacuation.

It is a good idea to update your family’shurricane kit each May. These are thingsyou may need to shelter in your home aslong as a mandatory evacuation order hasnot been issued. See ideas at: www.miami-dade.gov/oem

Once a hurricane watch is issued youhave 48 hours to prepare. The more stormpreparation you can accomplish ahead oftime, the better for you and your family.

If the watch is changed to a hurricanewarning, the storm will hit within 36 hours. If your preparations are completed early, you will be ready if a mandatory evacuationof Red Zone A is ordered.

• Have a “Go Kit” ready - things youwould take to the shelter if you must evacu-ate. Suggestions can be found on the MiamiDade County Office of EmergencyManagement website atwww.miamidade.gov/oem.

• Make plans to secure your property.Permanent storm shutters offer the best pro-tection for windows. A second option is toboard up windows with 5/8” marine ply-wood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tapedoes not prevent windows from breaking.

• Fill up your car or cars with gasoline; infact it is a good practice during hurricaneseason to refill when half empty. If you areleaving a car outside, and don’t have agarage or carport, park the vehicle as closeto a building as possible and away from thetrees.

• Determine how and where to secureyour boat.

• If you have a pool, lower the water sixinches, add extra chlorine, turn off the elec-tricity to the pool pump and securely wrapin plastic.

• If you live in a multi family building, remove everything from your balcony andask your building association what else youare required to do.

• Special needs shelters require pre-regis-tration. For details go to –http://www.miamidade.gov/fire/evacuation-program.asp

• Also requiring pre-registration are petshelters, forms can be found at -http://www.miamidade.gov/OEM/faq-pet-friendly.asp

The City of Sunny Isles Beach follows allemergency watches and warnings issued byMiami-Dade County. The main informationnumber for the County is 311. Once amandatory evacuation order is given all Cityfacilities will be closed and the Sunny IslesBeach Police Department (305-947-4440)will be the main point of contact for resi-dents. When storm winds reach a certainspeed, all police and fire personnel are alsomandated to evacuate. Emergency calls willbe rerouted to the County dispatch center, but at this point emergency personnel areprohibited by law from responding.

After the storm passes, it is up to the policein our City to determine when to issue the“all clear” allowing residents and businessowners to return to their homes and business-es. This decision will be influenced by manyfactors, the most important being the safetyof the general public. It will also be influ-enced by the soundness of individual build-ing damaged by the storm (as determined bythe Building Official), the availability ofcommon utilities like water, gas and electric-ity, and by when our roadways are sufficient-ly clear of debris to allow for normal traffic. The City will work as quickly as it can underthe circumstances to restore its services and asense of normalcy to our community.

In the most recent Travel Trends sur-vey conducted by Travel Leaders, experttravel agents cited Panama as the top up-and-coming vacation destination in Centraland South America, and with good reason. Many people are familiar with the PanamaCanal, the impressive 98 year old manmadewaterway that links two oceans and, initself, is a reason to visit the CentralAmerican country. However, there is muchmore to Panama than the canal. The incred-ibly diverse landscape ranges from quietbeaches ringed with coral reefs to pristinerainforests and mountain peaks that losetheir tops in the clouds.

Panama City, which lies at the Pacificentrance to the Panama Canal, offers avibrant atmosphere, stunning skyscrapers, great dining, and a convenient base fromwhich to see the rest of the country. Thereare really three Panama Cities, all worthexploring: the modern city, Panama Viejoand Casco Viejo.

In the 1500s, development of the orig-inal Panama City was set back severaltimes by fires and earthquakes. The citywas completely destroyed by fire inJanuary 1671 after being attacked bypirates. The ruins, located in the suburbs ofthe modern city, have are now a popularattraction called Panama Viejo.

After the destruction of the originalcity, residents conceived of a walled citythat would protect against future pirateattacks. This is now the historic districtcalled Casco Viejo, which is full of won-derful buildings and monuments.

Panama City is within easy driving dis-tance of the beautiful Soberania NationalPark. The park, which stretches along muchof the length of the Panama Canal, is greatfor hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, bird-and monkey-watching, or simply taking inthe beauty of the rainforest.

You’ll need to venture a bit fartherfrom the city to tour Panama’s spectacularhighlands. From the heights of Volcàn BarùNational Park, it’s possible to see both theAtlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as thecoffee plantations around the charmingtown of Boquete.

Then, of course, there’s the famouscanal, a true marvel of engineering. TheMiraflores Visitor Center is a 20-minuteride from Panama City. It has a museum ofinteractive exhibits and an outdoor terracewhere you can get a close-up view of tran-siting ships. Another way to experience thecanal is to hop on a day cruise that will takeyou through one or more of the threeimpressive sets of locks. You can also takea cruise from Miami or Los Angeles thatwill sail through the canal as part of alonger itinerary.

FRIENDS FOR LIFEAnna Ostrowiak and Brenda Senders are

more than just good friends. Both born inPoland, they each endured the horrors of theHolocaust and lived to bear witness. That’swhat led them to make a commitment to help-ing other Holocaust survivors, by volunteer-ing at Jewish Community Services. For 12years, Anna and Brenda were part of the teamat JCS’ Behavioral Health Services office inAventura, working in the Holocaust SurvivorSupport Program.

Each week, Anna, 88, and Brenda, 87,devoted themselves to assisting fellow sur-vivors by translating and filling out paper-work that allowed the survivors to receiveservices, pensions and reparations due tothem. Often, they would just listen, givingthese men and women an opportunity to tellpersonal stories that Anna and Brenda knewall too well, of the deprivation and devasta-tion they experienced during the darkestchapter of their lives.

THEIR HAUNTING PASTSAnna lived with her parents, brother and

sister in Warsaw until she was 14 years old. When the war broke out the family escaped toa small Polish town called Deblin. The nextyear, they were rounded up with their fellowJews and forced to live in a ghetto, wherethey had little food, no work and disease wasrampant. In 1942, Anna’s father was takenaway and never seen again.

Soon after, Anna got word that theGermans were planning to kill all the peopleliving in the ghetto and the family managedto escape the mass slaughter. However, theywere soon taken to a concentration camp inCzestochowa, Poland, where they labored ina munitions factory until 1945, when theRussians liberated everyone. Anna lived in adisplaced persons camp after the war, whichis where she met her husband. They came tothe United States in 1951, settling in Duluth,Minnesota before eventually retiring toMiami in 1980. Anna’s husband passed awayin 1984 and she is now remarried, to anotherHolocaust survivor.

Brenda’s story is just as harrowing. In1942, Hitler rounded up all the Jews living inher hometown of Sarny, Poland, and forcedthem into a ghetto. Brenda, her parents andtwo sisters and two brothers lived in fear andstarvation; Brenda and one of her sisters werethe only members of her family to survive. The sisters were separated and Brenda wentinto hiding at her uncle’s house, secretly serv-ing as a resistance fighter who wielded a riflefrom atop her horse.

After a stint in a displaced persons campafter the war, where she married and had adaughter, Brenda also emigrated to the U.S.,landing in New York City in 1951 and even-tually settling in Washington, D.C. She andher husband retired to Miami in 1989. In1996, she met Anna at the March of theLiving – an annual event dedicated to honor-ing Holocaust survivors — and the twowomen have been inseparable ever since.

JCS BECOMES THEIR COMMON CAUSE “When we started volunteering at JCS,”

Brenda remembers, “we were welcomed withopen arms. Every day we came in there werepeople lined up waiting to see us – the invisiblepeople, they were called, because they werepoor and had nothing.” Their fellow survivorsneeded help and that’s exactly what Anna andBrenda provided for them, until Brenda’s fail-ing health wouldn’t allow her to continue.

In recognition of their selflessness andcompassion, the Greater Miami JewishFederation announced Anna and Brenda asthe 2012 recipients of their Volunteers of theYear Award, a prestigious honor which theyrichly deserve. But as these two ladies willtell you, it is an award that belongs not just tothem but to all the people like them whoendured unspeakable tragedies and survivedto tell their tales.

THE FIRST FIVE YEARS Back in 1998, the late Mayor David

Today the state-of-the-artGovernment Center building is just onemagnificent landmark testifying to thecity’s monumental success story.

In just the first five years followingincorporation, Sunny Isles Beach quicklybegan transitioning from “rundown motelrow” to “millionaire’s row” featuring luxu-rious developments now gracing the eastside of Collins Avenue. Ever since Sunny Isles Beach incorpo-rated in 1997, the City Commission andmembers of city staff have been commit-ted to drafting fiscally responsible budg-ets with the goal to maintain the highestlevel of services along with the lowestpossible property tax rates. As a conse-quence of increased property values, thisyear, the city was able to keep its taxrate steady and unchanged – and still hasone of the lowest tax rates in Miami-Dade County.

In 1997, when Sunny Isles Beachbecame a newly incorporated city andresidents were looking forward to receiv-ing higher levels of service above andbeyond what was previously provided byMiami-Dade County, the tax rate for fis-cal year 1997/1998 was $2.683 per$1,000 of taxable assessed value. Today, the property tax rate for the 2011/2012fiscal year is only slightly higher -$2.8860 – and virtually everywhere youlook around Sunny Isles Beach, theongoing quest to make the city “firstrate” is more evident than ever.

Expressing the sentiments of MayorNorman Edelcup and members of theCity Commission, the late, great BillLone said it best while providing SunnyIsles Beach updates to business andcommunity leaders: “We are apprecia-tive of our growth and proud of ourcity’s accomplishments. Those of usaffiliated with the city truly celebrateSunny Isles Beach!”

‘WORLD CLASS FESTIVITIES’ The city’s 15th anniversary celebration

City Historian

That day set apart eachyear, first by custom andlater by statute, for thepurpose of honoring thememory of the soldierswho fought in the CivilWar, is a successor to

Decoration Day which originated with thesouthern states when flowers were strewnover the soldiers’ graves.

After hostilities between the Union andConfederate forces had ceased, the wid-ows and friends of the slain southernersshowed their sincere love and gratitude totheir fallen heroes in this fashion. Thiswas not confined to confederate gravesonly. These fine women of the South alsodecorated the graves of the northern dead. The news of this touching tribute flashedacross the North as a ray of new light andhope for brotherhood, and in 1868,General John A. Logan, then Commanderin Chief of the Grand Army of theRepublic, showed his deep admiration ofthis symbolic custom by issuing an orderdesignating May 30th of that year as theone on which all posts of the G.A.R.

should commemorate the dead of the CivilWar by decorating their graves with floralbouquets and wreaths.

Action was soon taken by the legisla-tures of various states and the 30th of Maywas set-aside for that purpose in themajority of states.

We also pay tribute to those Americanswho sacrificed their lives in the wars sincethe Civil War and now including ourarmed forces in Europe, Asia and theMiddle East. We should never forget thatpeace & liberty, as our forefathers learned, comes at a cost of great sacrifice, but theresults can be everlasting into our nextgeneration.
