ANITA LOUISE SMITH (Maier)

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Im-maculate Conception Church in Eden for Anita Louise Smith (Maier), of Eden, who entered into the Heavenly king-dom on Sunday, May 19, 2013. Anita is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Ronald Smith; her children, Lisa (Paul) Winter, Nadine Schlegel, Michelle (Tom) Wahl, and Jeff Smith; her grandchil-dren, Jessica Smith, Chris-topher and Anna Winter, Jacob and Lucas Schlegel, and Morgan and TJ Wahl; and her great grandchild, Brooklynn. Anita was pre-deceased by her beloved sister, Elsie Hausberger. Shortly after her mar-riage, Anita and Ron moved to Eden where she chose to stay home to raise her four children. Once her children were grown, she worked with BOCES for 19 years. After her re-tirement, she concentrated most of her time on her grandchildren and volun-teered for the Tri-County Crisis Pregnancy Center where she served on the board for many years. Ani-ta and Ron loved to travel and enjoyed many beauti-ful vacations together, as she loved and appreciated God’s creation. Anita was involved with many activi-ties at Immaculate Con-ception Church, including membership of the Altar & Rosary Society, as well as the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Anita was also very passionate about the weekly prayer gatherings that they hosted in their home. Arrangements were by the Laing Funeral Home, Inc. DEACON EDWARD O’CONNELL

Deacon Edward O’Connell passed peace-fully last Wednesday, sur-rounded by loved ones. The oldest of eight chil-dren, Ed lived a rich and fulfilling life. Despite working from an early age to help his family out he found time to get his Eagle Scout badge at the age of 15, and stayed active in scouting for the next 30 years, mostly as a troop leader. He enlisted in the army and served his coun-try for four years in WWII, being stationed mostly in Germany and France. After returning from the war, he attended the Uni-versity of Buffalo (UB) on the GI Bill, receiving a B.A. in American his-tory. While there he also met and married a young pharmacy student named Doris Kellogg. They had two children, Marsha and Matthew. He found his true calling as a teacher in the Buffalo school district where he taught 4th and 6th grade students. He fin-ished his M.A. during night school, while teaching during the day. He taught for almost 30 years before retiring. A number of his students toward the end were the 2nd or 3rd gen-eration of children he had taught earlier in his career. Many former students who were now parents used to tell him they were glad their kids were in his class; that they had specifically asked to have their kids in Mr. O’Connell’s class. They remembered him not because he helped them understand social studies or math but because he helped them become better people. He was very active in the Catholic Church in Eden, where he lived since

1970. For approximately eight years he was head of CCD classes (aka Sun-day school) at Immaculate Conception Church. In the mid-1970’s the diocese introduced the first per-manent deaconate and he was accepted as part of its inaugural class. He served as a deacon in the church for the next 20 years. During that time he was involved in a wide range of charitable activities in-cluding a program at Cra-dle Beach which provided severely disabled children with an opportunity to play in the sun and be involved in outside activities near Lake Erie. He loved those kids and they loved him. To them, he was simply Deacon Ed. After he retired from teaching, he and Doris spent time driving around the country. Doris passed in 2003 and Ed stayed home in Eden for the next 7 years. In the final couple of years, he moved into El-derwood at Rosewood, an assisted living facility, and then late last year into the skilled nursing facility at Elderwood at Lakewood. He enjoyed the time he spent at both Rosewood and Lakewood. He loved the people; and from what we’ve been told, they loved him as well. He was a proud Buffalo-nian. He loved the area, its history, and its people. He is survived by his daugh-ter Marsha, his son Matt and his daughter-in-law Mari. Goodbye, Ed. We love you and we miss you. Thanks for everything. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 24, 2013; 3:30PM at Immaculate Conception Church, 8791 S. Main St. Eden, NY. Followed by a wake at the Four Cor-ner’s Café, 8571 N. Funeral Services were held from Holy Spirit Church for Margaret Brit-ting, affectionately known as “Ma Britting,” formerly of North Collins, who died on May 20, 2013 at the age of 89. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert H. Britting; loving mother of Bernadette Hart, Elizabeth Smith, Kathleen (Jeff) Ivey and Roberta Britting (Dan Davini); grandmother of Katie, Michael, Doug-las, Will and Seth; sister of Marjorie Ryan and the late Mildred (William) Archibald. Arrangements by the Wentland Funeral Home. Margaret was a re-tired librarian from North Collins Central School.

With summer fast approaching, we are enthused about the beginning of another exciting time at our Town Park. Kicking off the summer season will be our Memo-rial Day service held at our Memorial Park on May 27th at 9 am. Then on June 21, 22 & 23rd we will host the 10th annual Summer Fest & Strawberry Jam. This year’s festival will feature a midway with rides & games sponsored by Goya Foods, J. Mills Distributing & Pero Family Farms. There will be entertainment every night with plenty of food and refreshments for all to enjoy. On Saturday we will be sponsoring a 5k run/walk to benefit the Madison McCarthy foundation.Life Guards are needed for the town pool which will open June 29th and recreation will begin on July 1st and end on August 9th. Also on July 1st Concerts in the park will begin and play every Monday night until August 12th. The Brant Firemen’s Softball schedule consists of 3 home games on June 4, July 16 & July 23rd with the league championship held on August 17th. The inactive records room is 90% complete and our block grant to create access to handicap restrooms at our town park is in the beginning stages. Local 17 oper-ating school has once again volunteered and has begun the work of adding a new parking lot and extending our walking path for your enjoyment. The dog warden has notified me of a donation from Marybeth Cantwell of Love-ly Things by Capable Hands of a beautiful Homespun Lion brand yarn Afghan to be raffled off at the summer feast for the benefit of our animal shelter. The town would like to send prayers and best wishes to Justice Linda Crouse & Town Custodian Goldie Disaverio for a speedy recovery and thank Justice Peter Gugino and his staff for all of their time spent making the courts run smoothly in Linda’s absence. Also a big thank you to Marge Bates, & Alan Nolan for keeping our Town Hall clean from dust bunnies while we wait for the return of our beloved Goldie. Police Chief Don Hepkins informed me of 2 intern students from Erie 2 Boces & SUNY Fredonia criminal justice getting the training needed to further their ed-ucation. It is also my pleasure to announce that Officer Nick Nesci received recog-nition of his Erie County regional enforcement of the DWI law award for 2012. We are looking into a town wide tire drop off site to correspond with our E-Waste (electronic) drop off held every 4th Saturday behind the Highway garage from 9 am to Noon.
