WHEN TO GIVE FIRST AID If you give first aid incorrectly you may

hurt the victim more. Don’t give first aid if you are in danger. Call for help right away.

CHECKING A VICTIM Is the victim unconscious? Are there any obvious injuries? Is the victim breathing? Does the victim have a pulse? Are there any bottles or boxes which

indicated poisoning? Does the victim have any preexisting

health problems?

MAKING EMERGENCY PHONE CALLS Call 9-1-1 Stay calm Give the following information:

Your nameYour locationThe type of emergencyThe condition of the victim if someone is

hurtWhat you have done to care for a victim.

TREATING CUTS, SCRAPES, AND DEEP WOUNDSAsk yourself… If you answer is yes, then

you should…

Is the scrape or cut minor? Clean the cut with mild soap and water. Cover with bandage.

Is the cut deep? Cover the cut with clean gauze. Apply pressure until it stops bleeding. If bleeding doesn’t stop call 9-1-1 you may need stitches.

Is there a lot of bleeding? Call for help. Cover wound with gauze. Apply pressure until help arrives. Add more pieces of gauze if the bleeding continues.

BURNS First Degree

Red, mild, and not very deep. Example: mild sunburn.

Second DegreeCause blisters and are very painful.

Third DegreeDark in color. These burns destroy pain

receptors, so they are not as painful as second degree burns.
