S ince my first day at Volunteer Fairfax I had heard from my coworkers what an amazing experience Celebration

Day was, and how much they looked forward to this day all year.

The moment I walked through the doors of Hutchison Elementary School, an intense sensation of excitement rushed into my veins. All of our hard work for the program came to fruition, from stuffing the backpacks in November to setting up the classrooms the night before. I could not wait to see the kid’s faces when they entered their classrooms that morning.

After arriving at Discovery Day I spent most of my time supervising the set up and making sure that everything ran smoothly. We had to verify that all volunteers signed in got a classroom assignment and received an orientation. This year Volunteer Fairfax provided all of the volunteers not only talking points about giving and sharing, but also lesson ac-tivities such as team teach and reading stories. The lessons gave the volunteers different ideas for games and topics to discuss with the students.

As I accompanied one volunteer to her classroom, a teacher stopped us in the hallway. Tears welled up in her eyes as she struggled to get her words out. She looked the volunteer and me straight in the eyes and began to thank us.

While the tears fell down her cheeks, she expressed her sincere thanks to Volunteer Fairfax and to all of our passion-ate volunteers. She said as her kindergartner’s opened up their backpacks and saw their prizes they became overjoyed! She knew how special this day was for her students and how much it meant for them to know someone cared about them. She thanked us for not only the presents we left her kids, but also for the volunteers who shared the important concept of volunteering. She knew she could try and explain the value of volunteering to them until the end of time, but we showed them the importance of it, and how it feels when someone helps you just because they want to, not because they have to. She thanked us again with a smile on her face and the volunteer and I walked quickly to our classroom, eager to meet the kids.

Just as we walked in, before even speaking a word, the students began screaming their thanks to us and one little girl ran up and gave me a huge hug. At that very moment I understood how important this program had become to our community and to the volunteers. I knew that we made a dif-ference that morning and as I left the school, I could not wait until the next year when we would do it all over again.

CGS Reflection

Four Schools Learn About A Celebration of Giving and SharingOn December 7, 2007, Volunteer Fairfax surprised more than 2,200 deserving children with their own backpack filled with toys, school supplies, and a brand new book. The fifth annual “A Celebration of Giving and Sharing” brought joy to many Fairfax County elementary students who might not otherwise receive gifts during the holiday season. In addition to brightening the lives of children in need, this program helps introduce the concept of volunteerism to local elementary school students and provided a tangible way for the schools to teach the concepts of giving, sharing, and, most importantly, volunteering.

In order to accomplish this feat, hundreds of volunteers gave their time to create the backpacks, deliver them and then visit with the children during school. The Packing

Party, held on November 14, kicked off the celebration. Two shifts of volunteers created assembly lines to put the assorted toys and books into the backpacks and then separate the appropriatenumber of bagsper school.

On December 6, volunteers decorated the students’ classrooms with tinsel and chalkboard drawings and put the backpacks on the students’ desks. The next morning, volunteers were waiting to the see the students’ faces light up as they ran to collect their new backpacks.

The schools that participated in 2007’s celebration were: Braddock Elementary, in Annandale; Glen Forest, in Falls Church; Hutchison, in Herndon; and Mount Eagle, in Alexandria. Schools are chosen based on the percentage of students who participate in the free and reduced lunch program.

In 2008, Volunteer Fairfax is partnering with Weyanoke and Woodlawn Elementary Schools, both located in Alexandria. Hutchison Elementary School, in Herndon will participate in a school-wide volunteer project practicing the ideas they were taught last winter as part of “A Celebration of Giving and Sharing.” For information on the 2008 “A Celebration of Giving and Sharing,” visit www.volunteerfairfax.org, and click on “CGS Registration.”

Fourth grader Richard Torres, a student at Hutchison Elementary, was thrilled to get his backpack from Volunteer Fairfax on Discovery Day.

On September 25, 2008, more than 500 Ernst & Young

employees traded in their calculators and spreadsheets for

hammers and glitter pens. Coordinated by Volunteer Fairfax,

Ernst & Young, a global accounting firm, held its second

annual Ernst & Young Mid-Atlantic Cares Day by volunteering

at 12 different projects in the Washington, D.C./Metro region.

This was done as part of a regional effort in which employees

in Richmond, Baltimore and Philadelphia engaged in similar

day-long volunteer activities.

Volunteers participated in a wide variety of projects, including

maintaining and beautifying Fairfax City parks, assembling

care packages for troops, installing lights for an outdoor

winter garden show, making lap blankets and stuffed animals

for hospice patients, preparing food for the homeless, and

making hats for sick children.

At Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School in Alexandria,

volunteers worked with Junior Achievement (JA) to teach

JA in a Day lessons to students. JA provides curriculum to

students that uses hands-on exeriences to help young people

understand the economics of life. It brings the real world to

students, opening their minds to their potential. Volunteers

also served at Phillips Programs VA, a nonprofit private

organization serving the needs of individuals with emotional

and behavioral problems.

At Phillips, employees worked with one on one with students

on interview skills

and also created

scrap books for

students, built

picnic tables and

benches, outdoor

landscaping and

painted a mural

inside the school.

“Mid-Atlantic Cares

Day enables us

to combine our

employee volunteer

force with our focus on corporate responsibility to make

a difference in the Greater Washington area,” says Chris

Caffrey, Mid-Atlantic Community Engagement Champion with

Ernst & Young. “Our people share a sense of purpose that

starts with the work we do for our clients and extends into the

communities in which we live.”

Volunteer Fairfax provides logistical planning to corporations

looking for a unique way to give back to their communities

and enhance their employees’ team skills at the same

time. For more information on corporate volunteering, visit
