LIVING THINGS All animals and plants are living things and
BIOLOGY is the study of these living things.
LIVING THINGS have seven characteristics.

The Seven Characteristics of Living Things
1. Feeding All living organisms need to take substances
from their environment to obtain energy, togrow and to stay healthy.
Some animals predate other animals(predator) or eat the same type animal(cannibal)
Based on its food source, animal are groupinto four, namely herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and detritivores.

Some organisms gain their food by living on or
taking it from other organism, they called
PARASITE.
There are also organism such as fungi and
bacteria that decompose organisms, they
called DECOMPOSERS.

2. Movement
All living organisms show movement of one
kind or another. Movement in an animals and human is active,
and in a plant is pasive.

3. Breathing or Respiration
All living things exchange gases with theirenvironment. Animals take in oxygen (O2and
breathe out carbon dioxide (CO2).
Two kinds of breathing process. Anaerobic andaerobic respirations. Anaerobic respiration is
cellular respiration, for example fermentation
by yeast to make fermented Casava.
Aerobic respiration is cellular respiration that
requires oxygen. Organism with an aerobic
respiration has respiratory organ.

4. Excretion
Excretion is the removal of waste from the
body. If this waste was allowed to remain inthe body it could be poisonous.
Excreting organs of human and animals
include: kidney, liver, skin and gills.
Excreting organ of plants include stomata on
the leaves and lenticels in the tree trunks.

5. Growth
When living things feed they gain energy. Some
of this energy is used in growth. Living thingsbecome larger and more complicated as they
grow.

6. Sensitivity
Living things react to changes around them.
We react to touch, light, heat, cold and sound,as do other living things.

7. Reproduction
All living things produce young. Humans make babies, cats
produce kittens and pigeons lay eggs. Plants also reproduce.
Many make seeds which can germinate and grow into newplants.
Organisms can reproduce either sexually or asexually, but some
can reproduce in both ways.
the mating phenomenon is also known as fertilization. In this
phenomenon male and female gametes meet.
in plants the result of its sexual reproduction is seeds, in
animals it is eggs or fetus.

Non living things
Sand, wood and glass are all non-living things. None of them shows any of the characteristics
listed above.
Non-living things can be divided into twogroups. First, come those which were never partof a living thing, such as stone and gold.
The second group are those which were once
part of living things. Paper is non-living but it isalso made from trees. Jam is also non-living butit was made from the fruit of a plant.
