It’s Almost Tournament Time! After nearly a year of planning, the United Leasing
Championship at Victoria National is only a few weeks away! Victoria National is buzzing in preparation for an estimated 15,000 enthusiasts expected to gather from June 25 – July 1 to take in seven spectacular days of golf.
Why Victoria National?Terry Friedman, late founder and original owner of
Victoria National, along with several other visionaries, dreamed of Victoria playing host to an event such as the United Leasing Championship. The dream becomes reality with the assistance of the Evansville Sports Corporation, guided by Tournament Director Becky Kasha, United Leasing, Inc. and Victoria National. United Leasing, Inc., owned by Ron Romain, a Victoria National member, has generously agreed to be the title sponsor of the Championship through 2014.
Rave ReviewsThe tournament’s field of
156 golfers will compete for a total purse of $550,000, with the winner’s share totaling $99,000. These players are in for a challenging champion-ship as discussed in April among four TOUR regulars who were in town for Media Day to promote the upcoming tournament. Craig Bowden, a 43 year old from nearby Bloom-
ington, tour rookie Hudson Swafford, a recent winner on the Nationwide Tour, B.J. Staten and Josh Broadaway gave Victoria National rave reviews. After tour rookie
Swafford played Victoria for the first time he stated “I’m probably going to pack a few extra golf balls. This course will challenge every aspect of your game.” Broad-away chimed in “I’d heard a lot about the golf course before I played it,” he said. “It’s all that and more, the best course we’ll play. We need more tournaments like this one.” Victoria National intends to deliver “all that and more” to the players, spectators, volunteers, vendors and guests this year and in the years to come. Let the tournament begin!

Southern Indiana continues the trend of having the most unpredictable weather pattern in the entire country. This past spring gave us an extra month of favorable growing conditions that we were able to capitalize on in efforts to restore tournament playing surfaces. We pushed growth in the rough and fairways and had great success filling voids left from the 2011 summer. Greens are healthy, roots are deep, and we are prepared to maintain quality conditions throughout this summer. We have eight full-time employees that have bachelor degrees in agronomy and have added another eight student interns from top universities across the country for the summer months. Having a staff that is trained to understand how bentgrass grows and reacts when placed under extreme stress will be a great value to our golf course this season. The horticulture team has added staff this season to improve the ambiance around the Clubhouse, on the boulevard, and throughout the golf course. Our goal is to restore areas that have been stagnant for the past six years, so once again, we can truly be a top golf club in the country from top to bottom. We have also replaced 25% of our maintenance equipment this year with John Deere equipment to ensure that we are on the “cutting edge” of the golf maintenance industry. In June, we have an opportunity to showcase the course; first at the Victorian Cup, and then to the rest of the world during the United Leasing Championship at Victoria National.
Back in March, we had the opportunity to jump ahead of schedule and aerify all our greens, tees, and fairways. This early start accelerated our bentgrass to start pushing new roots earlier
than years past and also gave us time to focus on restoring the quality of the rough. This opened an opportunity in April for us to continue to compliment our off-season project work by addressing smaller projects in high profile areas throughout the property. These smaller projects include
repair work to all our bridges on the course, renovating the bank in front of #15 green, installing Zoysiagrass on the lower range tee, improving the sand depths and quality of the greenside bunkers, and repair to the rock wall below the bunker on #16. The
improvements to the short-game and driving range in the off-season are areas where I have received great feedback, and these areas will continue to be a focus moving forward. We will be topdressing and adding extra fertility when needed to ensure the quality
of turf matches the golf course. Native work will continue, but be very selective in efforts to keep it from becoming too invasive to the golf course. The landscaping on the entire property has also become a higher priority. We have added staff to help us reach our goal of keeping the natural theme of our grounds. We will be doing this by adding native perennial plants. Along with keeping these areas clear of weeds, trimmed tight, and edged will be a dramatic improvement.
Our equipment fleet has been updated this year with new walking green, tee, and approach mowers. This will provide an outstanding quality of cut that is necessary in order to deliver championship conditions each day. We also have replaced 13 utility carts, added another tri-plex riding approach mower with vertical mowing heads, and purchased a new topdresser for close cut bentgrass areas. Being able to vertical mow our greens, approaches, and tees and then evenly spread sand across the area will remove the leaf blades that are being missed by our mowers. The result will be a much tighter and smoother surface with no disruption to our golfers.
The golf course is being prepped for a very exciting June this year. The staff is continuing to focus on details throughout the course so we have everything peaking to the highest level possible the entire month. The Victorian Cup will be a great opportunity for our Membership to showcase Victoria National to their guests. From tee to green the course will be prepared in championship condition. Following this event, we plan to begin the preparation process for the United Leasing Championship at Victoria National. Volunteers from clubs such as Crooked Stick, Muirfield Village, Valhalla, Olde Stone, Philadelphia Cricket Club, and Augusta National will be helping my staff during the week of the event. We will have 60 employees during the event week, and will be prepping the course to PGA TOUR standards each day. Our goal is to make this the best Nationwide Tour course these guys have ever played, and I feel that we are on pace to deliver.

Greetings Everyone,
I hope this note finds you well. We are pleased to report after completion of the cottages, the feedback from the membership as well as guests has been overwhelmingly positive.
Year to date we have sold 15 of the 22 Founding Private Residence Club Memberships and feel strongly that the remaining seven will be sold by mid-June if not sooner. In addition, 95% of the cottage room nights available to the Founders have been reserved in advance, proof that the cottages are delivering real savings and value in addition to world class luxury. As with any business, and with
regard to the laws of supply and demand, as demand increases price will go up. This is why if you are considering joining the Private Residence Club, time is of the essence! If you or your company is interested in learning more about our Founding Membership Program, please give me a call. Once the Founder offering is sold-out, there will be no more opportunities to join at the introductory price.
Sincerely,Brian Stock 812.858.8230 ext. 228 • [email protected]
Ladies’ Guest DayForty-three ladies turned out for our spring Ladies’ Guest Day – “Ladies Night Out”. With a light lunch and some re-freshing rum smoothies the ladies took to the course for an afternoon of fun followed by dinner, cocktails and musical entertainment in the clubhouse. The golf professional staff had a few fun twists up their sleeve with a putting demonstration prior to play, a guessing game contest on the course, and a “Let’s Make a Deal” game show at dinner. In the 2 best ball scramble format we had some outstanding golf. Mary Ruth Geny and her guest Mary Frances Evers paired with Marty Jordan and her guest Brigitte Landford to win the gross division, while Patty McGowan and her guests Karen Dalton, Maggie Kennedy and Brenda Hilde took home the net division. Thank you to everyone who participated, and don’t forget the Ladies Member Guest this fall on October 11!

We concluded the 2012 Victorian Cup – Men’s Member Guest on Saturday, June 2, with a full field of 64 teams! The 9-hole match play round-robin format always provides some excitement as the teams try to outlast their flight and qualify for the champions shootout. Eleven flight winners finally came to the front and convened at the 10th tee for the 4-hole alternate shot format shootout. Twenty-two players marched down the fairway with 40 spectator carts following the action. After eliminating four teams on the 10th hole and 3 on the 11th hole the final four teams were standing on the 17th tee. Gary Cooper / Drew Sandefur, Zach Hickson / Beecher Metzger, Bob Maisch / Doug Brownley and Chris Combs / Dave Carson all put it in play well off the tee.
Unfortunately, all 4 teams made bogey 5 and a chip-off was necessary from the front of the green. Zach Hickson and Beecher Metzger and Bob Maisch and Doug Brownley escaped the elimination and proceeded to the 18th tee. Bob Maisch and his partner Doug Brownley were able to navigate away from the water off the tee while Zach Hickson and Beecher Metzger just missed the fairway in the water by 5 feet. Bob Maisch and Doug Brownley were able to make a routine 5 to win the 2012 Victorian Cup Championship! Congratulations to them and all of the flight winners and runners-up below.
Bragger’s Cup Our annual “Bragger’s Cup” concluded on May 6 with the World team taking home the title. The competition saw 42 players compete over this two day “Ryder Cup” style event, and the World team was able to forge a 17-16 lead after the day one four-ball matches. Sunday action saw 20 individual matches take place and the overall result still in the balance. The World Team used a strong second day performance to outlast the Indiana Team and win their first Bragger’s Cup in four years. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated!

Dear Members,
The golf season is well underway, and the course is in outstanding condition! Matt Weitz and his team have done a wonderful job this winter to upgrade the practice facility and the golf course. With the aerification being completed early in the spring this year the course should stay in excellent condition and be in prime shape for the inaugural PGA TOUR Nationwide United Leasing Championship at Victoria National.
With respect to our member event schedule the season is in full swing. We completed our “Nationwide Tour Sunday Experience” with
over 80 participants learning how the course will play for the professionals this summer. The Bragger’s Cup also saw a great field compete in the annual member favorite event.
Our instructional programs have been well received this year, as we look to improve and expand the instruction offerings at the club. Our Ladies Clinic Series, our Beginner’s Golf School, and our Short Game School were all very successful, and we continue our Junior Play Day’s and Camps on through July.

Professionally,David von Hoffmann, PGA
