SPORT
Myles claims victoryFOUR groups and 25
minutes separated the six-man scratch bunch and the lone limit rider at last week-end’s Hume Veterans handi-cap road race at Benalla.
Raced around one of the club’s favorite courses, a 53km circuit of Moorngag, Tatong and Emu Bridge, the race saw the limit rider swallowed up by the out-markers at the halfway mark.
Last week’s prize winner, Mick Cathie, fell victim to the increased pace as new member Paul Sanderson made his presence felt.
With 10km to travel the middle markers caught the leaders with the back mark-ers still well out of sight.
Strong efforts by the leaders were in order to secure the win and Peter Gottschling wasn’t going to allow the group to get caught as he kept geeing everyone up to keep the pace high.
The wind played a big part throughout the morning with strong gusts either as a head or head/side wind with the finishing straight blow-ing all riders to the road edge with a strong northerly side blast.
INSIDE RUNNING: John Myles found the right line to edge out the competition in last week’s Hume Veterans road race.
Any rider on the outside was going to find it tough as all moves began on the left hand side.
With everyone search-ing for a wheel it was John Myles and Sanderson having a ding-dong bat-tle right up to the line and with the inside run Myles got home centimetres
ahead of Sanderson. It was a close battle
for third place as Bernie Grealy managed to hold Gottschling out to take the final podium position.
The blanket finish had the judges going to the cam-era to separate the first six places before giving Gra-ham Davison the nod for
fifth and Graeme Neilsen sixth.
As the backmarkers were a combined bunch they fell short of the anticipated travel speed by only a small margin and had to settle to fight out the fastest time honors just two minutes in arrears with Geoff Morley taking the sprint narrowly.
Results: 1 – John Myles (10) 1.29.04 (35.70 kph); 2 – Paul Sanderson (20); 3 – Bernie Grealy (10); 4 – Peter Gottschling (10); 5 – Graham Davison (10); 6 – Graeme Neilsen (20); 7 – Colin Stokes (10); 8 – Chris Wilkins (25); 9 – Stephen O’Brien (20); 10 – Geoff Morley (scr). Fastest time: Geoff Morley (scr) 1.21.54 (38.83 kph).

The group had enough breath on route to sing Happy Birthday to one member who, having just turned 85, is one of the club legends and is a superb inspiration to younger members.
Although this area had been extensively logged, some stately stands of trees remain and after the recent rain, streams were running and evidence of prolific wildlife was noticed on the track.
