Deputy Principal’s Report 9 Greetings from the Deputy’s Desk and welcome to winter. It is good to see the school back up and running after the interruption of COVID-19. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to you all for supporting your children in working on-line during the shutdown. It was quite a challenging experience for many families and students who none the less worked diligently and conscientiously throughout the emergency. It was a highlight of my career seeing all those happy faces return to school and engage quickly in the learning with vigour and vim. Well done! The school has almost returned to full function with a few restrictions on sporting activities and excursions remaining in place for the time being. Unfortunately, students are not allowed to play ball games other than handball at recess and lunch as the Department of Education has placed restrictions on this. Now that winter has arrived it is a good time to reinforce that hooded jumpers and tracksuit pants are not permitted at school. Also, grey jumpers or jumpers with logos are not permitted. Should a student be seen wearing a non-uniform jumper they will be asked to remove the item of clothing and given a lunch detention. The Uniform Shop is open every Wednesday and you are able to order clothing through Flexischools. Half Yearly reports are being written and edited as I type. Please be aware that the reports will reflect the COVID-19 shutdown. As students have spent a significant amount time away from face-to-face learning they will not have had the opportunity to meet some of the outcomes in any given course. Where this has happened, your child will receive a N/A against the outcome. Similarly, some courses in TAS did not run and your child may not receive a report or will receive a comment of a generic nature as a result. The end of year reports will return to the usual format as will examinations and formal assessments. June 2020

CONGRATULATION TO . . .

Part of the onboarding that newly appointed teachers have to do is a process called Accreditation. Teachers collect evidence and are asked to map these pieces of evidence against professional standards. This is usually celebrated by other staff at morning tea. In absence of our usual fortnightly whole school morning tea I would like to congratulate the following teachers on successfully completing their Accreditation.

Executive Director’s Visit Today, The Ponds High School enjoyed a visit from Mrs Catherine Brennan, Executive Director, School Performance Metropolitan North. She was accompanied by Mrs Jeanie Brown, Acting Director Educational Leadership The Ponds. During the visit, I shared with them what I think the 10 best things about The Ponds High School are:

1. Staff’s enthusiasm to participate, build, teams, year advisers, LEARNING & SUPPORT and SASS 2. Electives structure 3. Organisation 4. Use of Technology 5. Assessments 6. Leadership 7. Sporting opportunities especially knockouts, Combined High Schools championships, swimming,

soccer and athletics 8. Beginning teacher support program 9. Careers support for students 10. Active P&C Committee

From left to right Mrs Brown, Mrs Brennan, Mrs Weal and Mr Laird Mr Tolentino shared our Leadership vision, Mr Cook and Mrs Page shared our Validation preparation and Mrs Morrison presented Staff Welfare in action. Mrs Brennan and Mrs Brown then visited Year 12 Visual Arts and Year 11 Wood Work, before exiting to visit John Palmer Public School. I trust they enjoyed their experience at The Ponds High School.

Wednesday sport procedures for Term 3 Great news! Restrictions are lifting and sport is gradually returning to normal. After the relaxation of restrictions and with the approval from Macquarie Zone Sport, we will be able to recommence Wednesday Sport in Term 3. Therefore, students’ timetables will be changed back to their original structure. This means all students are expected at school to attend their regular roll call at 8:30am. This change will be updated on Sentral for the start of Term 3.

Season 1 Sports will continue to allow students to engage in their chosen sport further. There will be no changing of sport groups until the commencement of Season 2 sport. As such, all Season 1 Sport invoices are applicable. If you have paid in full, no further action is required. If you still have money owing on this account, we ask that you pay prior to the start of term. Term 3 Week 1 • All recreational sports will recommence. This includes sports that remain on school grounds, such as Rec

Cricket and Rec Soccer, as well as sports using external venues, such as tennis, gym and yoga. • Grade Sport will have a training week where they can refamiliarise themselves with the sport and their team.

They will be able to utilise our home venues (Jonas Bradley Oval and Peel Reserve). Term 3 Week 2 • Recreational sports will continue. • Grade Sport will commence their next round of inter-school games. The venues/organisation will be

communicated to students the week prior. Safety procedures • We will continue to follow hygiene practices during this time. • This will include the use of hand sanitiser, washing hands with soap and water and disinfecting equipment

Child Studies The World Is My Playground Educational Resource As part of the Child Studies elective, The World is My Playground, students investigate how toddlers and young children grow and develop. Students have been involved in a range of interactive activities which reflect the different kinds of children’s play and reasons for that play, relate to how young children learn and the types of activities which are appropriate for them. The aim of their latest assessment task was to construct an educational resource targeting 3-6 year olds. These resources were designed to develop the child’s cognitive, social, language and fine/gross motor skills. Our students worked very hard to produce a great range of high quality educational resources. This task was a great chance for the students to put the screens away during our online learning experience and try something different! We are very proud of their efforts! PHOTOGRAPHY Hi my name is Lucy, I am a year 12 student studying Photography, Video and Digital Imaging. I am currently working on my body of work and I have chosen to capture cityscapes. I enjoyed exploring the city on the weekends and capturing the amazing architecture through my photography. These photographs will be used to develop my portfolio, which will then be used to take part in university, Tafe and employment opportunities after year 12. Thank you for the opportunity to share my work with the school and local community. Lucy Year 12.5

UNIFORMS NEWS The Uniform Shop still remains closed for trying on uniforms. Flexischools (www.flexischools.com.au) is the preferred method to order uniforms and only students are allowed to collect their orders. Parents are not yet permitted on site to collect/exchange uniforms. Flexischools orders need to be placed before the cut-off time, 4:45pm on Tuesday for collection on Wednesday from Recess onwards. If the cut off time is missed, the orders are packed the following week. PARENTS, please check your Flexischools Account for the correct class. Many orders have the wrong class entered and therefore are difficult to locate. Only students can purchase uniforms. Eftpos is the preferred method but cash is allowed for purchases $22.00 or less ie socks, tights, tie, cap and scarf. Exchanges can be done by the students at the Uniform Shop on Wednesdays. Exchanges are ‘like for like’ ie blouse for blouse, shirt for shirt and must have the original packaging and Tags on. Please check your orders carefully before submitting to avoid wrong choices. Sizing of Uniforms Winter Uniform Girls The general rule is; based on the school dress size, order the blouse one size up and the skirt one size down. This works for most girls. Winter Uniform Boys Generally, the trouser size is the same size as the school short size Jackets Generally order the jacket one size up from the school dress size or school shirt size. Other items are available on the website Some items are currently blocked on Flexischools as we have run out of stock. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused supply problems for our manufacturers and current date of deliveries are not able to be given. If you have any queries, please email me at [email protected] Jo Leaver Uniform Shop Manager
