Important Club Notices

Tuesday Club Meetings

Just a friendly reminder that the FOCC Club Meetings are now going to be held on the second Tuesday of each month.

The decision was made earlier in the year to avoid double booking the hall on Monday nights.

The meetings start at the same time as always - 8:00PM. We hope that this does not cause too many issues for our club members.

Please refer to the schedule opposite for the dates of the proposed meetings.

New Club Membership Cards

There has been a slight delay with our membership cards this year as we have decided to have new ones designed and professionally printed on hard plastic similar to a credit card.

We opted to do this as it is far easier to write out new membership cards on the evening rather than having members wait for them to be printed on an individual basis.

The new cards will be available at the next meeting (January) from the Club Secretary. Please enquire on the evening and have your receipts available so the secretary can verify these.

4 REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT

The weather has warmed up a bit and there have been a couple of wild storms to go along with the weather. Now living in the country I am a bit more aware of fires and there have been a couple started by angle grinders used under the wrong circumstances. The other ignition source is lightning and if it is a dry storm and no heavy rain more fires can be caused.

On the weekend of 15 and 16 November there was new event at Mannum for the old vehicle and engine scene and some model steam as well. One hour trips on the paddle steamers “Oscar W” and “Marion” were well in demand. They also had a steam traction engine and a steam lorry there as well. I do actually “rabbit on a bit” about steam vehicles and if you have not been up close to a full size live steam vehicle the two vehicles will be attending the “Power of the Past” display week end at Mount Barker in March. For further details see our other events section.

The Early Ford V8 Lenswood Picnic went over well and good use was made of the FOCC gazebos. There was a good range of Ford vehicles there for all to look at. Some had a bit of a hiccup finding the right road (there is more than one Swamp Road in the Hills) and when coming from the south the gate to the oval is very close to a left turn as lots found out. I am a member of four of the clubs that were at the event.

The day before the last FOCC general meeting for 2014 the FOCC held its December Christmas Event. It was a bring your own everything meal at West Terrace, Kensington Gardens. We had a good turnout and the gazebos once again were an asset as we had a couple of showers to contend with. Some of the rain managed to get between the gap between the gazebos and the teddy bear picnic had to be moved to get them away from the drips. We also collected some tins of food for the Vinnie’s Christmas hampers. The raffle was well supported and covered most of the costs of the day.

It has been reported that SMASA has made an approach to the current Labour Minister for Transport to support some form of conditional registration for vehicles legally modified and outside of the current conditional scheme for un-modified vehicles. The submission has not been rejected out of hand which is promising news. That puts a “square boxy” 100E two door Anglia sedan or a 300E van (same as the 100E body style) back on the possible purchase list. I am not real keen on a 300E Squire or Escort but you could try me.

The FOCC constitutional changes and the Street Rod conditional registration which is being held up by the constitutional changes is still a work in progress.

The next FOCC general meeting will be start of a “new era” for the FOCC as we will meet from now on and into the future on the second Tuesday of each month with the first meeting on the 13th. of January. The change will affect some members positively as they have children’s sport on a Monday night. Some others may have a previous commitment to the second Tuesday in the month and the change may well not suit them.

By the time that you see this message it will be after Christmas so it will be “happy new year and best wishes for the year 2015” from the President.

5MANCAVE SPECIAL

GRAHAMSTEMPLE OF SOLITUDE

Reading about Paul’s man cave in the last edition of CAMTORQUE has encouraged me to share my man cave story.

I guess I’ve had a man cave in various forms since my wife, Alice and I moved into our current home in 1979. During this time I have accumulated many types of collectables and memorabilia some which is on show around the house and a quantity in cartons waiting for an appropriate place to display.

In October 2013 I decided it was time to retire after nearly 40 years in the Federal public service. Everyone advised me to make sure I kept my mind and body active. Then Alice and I discovered the Ford Owners Car Club and using our son’s 1971 XY Falcon Ute we went on some club cruises and activities. We were hooked, so much so that we purchased our own car, a 1975 Lincoln Continental Mark 1V.

Article Written By Graham Farell

Owning such a long vehicle demanded that I lengthen our current garage by 2 metres making the total area 8M X 6M. This expansion allowed me to construct a decent man space area that incorporated the Lincoln as a feature. I have decorated the walls with various items some that haven’t seen the light of day for some time.

Some of the items on display are number plates, petrol signage (some reproductions, some original), flags, oil tins, traffic lights just to list a few. As I was advised to keep active I have restored a Golden Fleece Bowser, made a revolving tyre coffee table, restored a miners couch and recently got the creative juices flowing and made a cheerleader table. I find that every town I visit now my first port of call is their second hand shops.

It’s very important for a bloke’s health and wellbeing to have a place where you can gather your thoughts surrounded by memories and history. Even the cave man decorated his man cave with pictures of hands and hunting animals.

I feel at peace when I’m in my man cave and love sharing it with others. Alice and I often sit in the man cave and ponder the day’s events over a cup of coffee.

I also wish to acknowledge the tremendous support I get from my partner Alice.

6 HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR RIDE - CAR BIBLES

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR RIDEOver the coming month’s you’ll find in-depth articles describing in intricate detail how everything automotive works.

This month, we continue with Basic Car Maintenance.

Electrical

Disconnecting and reconnecting your battery

If you’re going to do any work on your car involving the electrical system, disconnect the battery first. To do this, loosen the connector for the negative/ground terminal first, and wiggle the terminal cap off. Use a wire-tie or similar to tie the cable back out of the way. If you need to take the battery out, you can now take off the positive connector.

Why negative then positive? If you disconnect the positive side of the battery first, the negative side is still connected to the entire car. If you drop a tool and it lands on the positive battery terminal and touches anything else on the car, you’ll have an electrical short. By disconnecting the negative first, you’re cutting off the return path for the current. Now, if a tool drops on to either of the battery terminals, it doesn’t matter if it touches part of the chassis or not - there’s no continuous path for the electrical current.

Reconnecting your battery. Connect the positive terminal first, and the negative second - the reverse of removal, and for the same reasons. When you slip the negative connector on, there will be a spark as it gets close and makes contact with the negative battery terminal. Don’t be afraid of this - it’s nothing to worry about. Make sure the terminal caps are done up nice and tight.

Check your battery terminals

Most modern cars run on a 12 volt negative ground electrical system. If your battery terminals or contacts aren’t clean, you’re making it more difficult for the current to pass around the electrical system. Remove the terminal caps as described above and clean each contact post with a wire brush to get a nice clean metal contact surface. Do the same to the terminal caps, then reattach them as described above.

Lights

One indicator or blinker is flashing faster than the other

When you indicate one way and the blinker flashes quicker than when you indicate the other way, it means one of the bulbs has blown.

An auto parts store will be able to tell you what sort of bulb you need to replace it with and your manual should show you how to get at the indicator bulbs - they’re different on every car.

Don’t touch the glass when changing headlight bulbs

Most headlight bulbs now are filled with halogen and have special coatings on the outside of the glass. If you pick the bulb up by the glass with your fingers, you will leave trace amounts of oil and grease on the glass.

When the bulb is used, that area of the glass will get hotter than the rest and it will eventually cause the bulb to crack. When changing headlight bulbs, only hold the metal bulb holder at the base, or make sure you’re wearing rubber surgical / mechanic’s gloves (clean ones) if you’re touching the glass.

Dash / instrument warning lights

The check engine light

Every new car now comes with OBD-II - On Board Diagnostics 2. This is a fault-registering system connected to sensors all over the car, engine, fuel and emissions system. When the check engine light comes on, it can mean many things. There are something like 4,000 unique OBD2 codes that can be stored. Handheld OBD2 diagnostic tools can be plugged in to the OBD2 port which is normally under the dash on the driver’s side. These tools can read out the fault code and/or reset the system to contain no codes. Codes are split into two categories - historical/inactive, and active. The historical codes are lists of things that have been detected in the past but are no longer an issue, whilst the active codes are things that are a problem right now. Codes are subdivided into B-codes (body), C-codes (chassis) and the biggest list of all - P-codes (powertrain).

The service engine light

This might indicate “Service”, “Service Engine” or “Maint Reqd”. It’s an indicator that you’re getting close to a scheduled maintenance interval. On some cars it’s as simple as counting miles before it comes on, whilst on others it maps engine temperatures, oil temperatures, air temperatures and other indicators of probable stress to tell you when it might be time for new oil or a service. In most cars this can be overridden or reset by you, the owner. Your handbook will tell you if this is the case. If you take your car for a service, the garage should reset it for you.

Oil warning light

Typically this light will come on if your oil pressure is too low. Low oil pressure is serious and if you continue to drive with this light on, eventually your engine will die. Low oil pressure can be caused by a failed oil pump, a blocked oil filter or strainer in the sump, or by low oil levels - for example if your engine is burning oil. Either way, you need to get it fixed, and fast. Low oil pressure is A Bad Thing and your engine won’t thank you for leaving this problem untreated.

Coolant warning light

If this comes on it means that the level of coolant in your radiator is low and needs topping up. DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT! The coolant system is pressurised and it could easily release pressure and spray you with boiling coolant. Do it when the engine is cold.

Top up the system with either a pre-mixed coolant bought from a shop, or with distilled water. Don’t use tap water - the mineral deposits in it boil out in the cooling system and calcium gets depositted around the inside of the radiator making it less efficient (which will eventually cause it to fail). It’s always best to use pre-mixed coolant, or to mix your own rather than using neat water.

7ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

Summer is on us now so I would expect to see some more of those classic cars out there on the road. I know there are quite a few in the Club but rarely do we see them. Pictures are flat and can be hung on the wall to be looked at and admired and take up no room. Cars are big and three dimensional plus absorb lots of room as well as being fitted with wheels so they are easily moved so get them out there. One way to enjoy your classic is to come along on a Club cruise. Other Club members and the public would love to see them. Why bother putting the car on Historic registration if it is going to live its life in a shed. Why bother being a member of the FOCC if you are not going to support it. The FOCC is not a Public service. If more of you brought your cars on Club runs, the cruise organisers may get encouraged to find bigger and better things to do on a cruise.

It is time for the Committee to set the calendar of FOCC events for 2015 so if you have an idea or have been somewhere that you think others would enjoy please let the Events Manager know. (That would be me)

Car 1: The Galaxie Skyliner.

The Galaxie is officially on the road with still a few things to do. Some more rubber seals to be fitted and all the trim and upholstery to be done. Last month I said that some of the trim was no longer made but you just need to keep digging. On the Zippel Cruise the other night (Cruises for American Vehicles) I came across a past member of the FOCC who found a supplier of trim for 50’s through to 70’s cars. Bingo. Checked out their website and they have everything I need (www.smsautofabrics.com). Now to get a quote and most likely a bank loan to buy some.

The Galaxies’ roof is still not 100% but is working. The ‘ready to lift’ micro switch is a bit naughty and needs a thump at the right time to get the roof lifting. That is on the to do list.

Truck 1: F700.

Took out the trucks’ clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder to be re-kitted. Time has rendered the rubbers a bit hard and leaking hydraulic fluid does not do many favours for the paint work. Simple enough job and that gives me the ability to move the girl under its own power again. The brakes also need doing but need to organise a flat surface to be able to jack her up. That flat surface would be my shed but having trouble getting the floor Concreted. So far, no concrete company has been willing to send their trucks to my place. Those that have seen my drive way will understand but enough said that it is too steep for the trucks to get out. The job has been booked twice but failed to happen so have to wait till next year.

Truck 2: 1942 Jail Bar.

On to preparing the engine. The flat head v8 in this truck is seized so some early works are needed. There is a long list of possible ways to go about this but the first step that I am going to undertake is fill the engine with Diesel. It will do no harm, is easy to flush out and penetrates very well. Using a squeeze bottle, fill each cylinder via the spark plug holes, to the top. Being a side valve, by also filling the sump it will do the crank bearings as well as the valve gear. Now it is time to just let it sit and refill the cylinders weekly. Should be turning over any time now. But you know what Mr Gullible’s simple jobs are like. Find out if this has worked in next month’s issue.

TABLETOP STIRLING ENGINE

Power this super-cool Stirling Engine with a hot cup of tea! The original Stirling Engine was actually patented in 1816 by the Robert Stirling who designed it to replace the notoriously dangerous steam engines during the industrial revolution. Where steam engines require very high temperatures and pressures to function, the Stirling Engine uses heat sources to cause the expansion and contraction of gas inside the chamber, which in turn drives the piston.

To get this cool engine firing, simply apply a heat source that is 20 degrees Celsius greater than the environmental temperature. If you don’t have a cup of tea, a very warm hand on a very cold day will work!

10 EVENTS

FESTIVITIESIN THE PARKAnother year has flown by at the FOCC and the last club event was held at West Terrace, Kensington Gardens.

The Teddy Bears Picnic was hosted by Paul & Gloria Howe with donations of tins and food going towards St. Vinnies. People were asked to bring along their teddies so they could have some tea on the rug.

The picnic proved popular and there was a good turnout of regular and new club members. Many people decided to come in Christmas attire with Dominique Klotz winning the best dressed on the day!

We’d like to thank Paul & Gloria for all of their hard work and effort in putting on this event and we hope they decide to do it again next year!
