We promote sustainable forestry

• Wood supply is guided by Metsäliitto’s environmental policy and the principles of corporate responsibility

• We know the origin of the wood we supply – We have certified quality and environmental management

systems which include a wood origin tracking system– We do not procure wood from protected areas or any other areas

where logging is prohibited– We have a certified chain of custody in place in most of our wood

supply countries • We train our personnel and subcontractors in good environmental

practices and safety at work• We support forest certification and work closely with our stakeholders

to promote sustainable forestry

We support forest certification based on independent third-party verification

• Forest certification is a good tool to ensure and communicate sustainable forest management

• We aim at increasing the share of certified wood in our products and introduce more labeled products

• The majority of our wood is PEFC-certified–PEFC is the predominant system in small, privately-owned forests

• In 2008, 75 % of the wood supplied by Metsäliitto originated from certified forests

Legal and sustainable material

• In international market it is not always as a matter of course– Illegal logging, forest extinction– Forest role in climate change

Chain of Custody

Chain of Custody and product label

A Chain of Custody is a well documented system that makes it possible to trace back the flow of wood raw material and products made of it, including every transfer from one party of the supply chain to the next. If a certain percentage of the wood raw material originates from a a certified forest and ALL parties involved in the supply chain have a certified Chain of Custody, the product manufacturer can apply for a product label.
