Shepherd’s Sharing Notes: The frequency of the musical note A

above middle C is 440 Hz (Hz=cycles per second). It is the note that most orchestras use to tune their instruments. Every note on the musical scale has its own specific frequency. It’s important that the musicians all agree on the frequency or pitch for the notes of the music that they are going to play. So, whether the note is played on a piano, trumpet, clarinet, violin, hand bells or guitar, it is the same note. The sound waves produced by that note always vibrate at the same number of times each second. This consistency enables composers to arrange the notes of a song into a specific melody that will come out the same way each time it is played or sung. Every-one can recognize “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” (or “The Alphabet Song” which uses the same tune) as long as the notes are arranged in the same way every time. Yet in spite of this consistency, the same note sounds different when played on different instruments or sung by different voices. An electric guitar has the same notes as an acoustic guitar, but the same song played on each of them will sound different. Each instrument brings its own unique characteristics. There’s even a difference within a group of the same instruments. For example, experienced violinists can probably tell the difference between 440 Hz played on a Stradivarius and that same frequency played on a Walmart violin. Although orchestras, bands, and choirs often add different melodies in harmony or counterpoint to the main tune to provide different parts of different instruments or voices, sometimes all the instruments and voices repeat the same theme in their own unique way or blend their sounds in unison. When Sir Paul McCartney sings “Eight Days a Week” it’s not the same without John, George and Ringo.

What all of this is leading up to is that sometimes it’s not just the song, but the singer or musician that makes a difference. The same can be said about a message. Two people can deliver the same message and one will be listened to and the other ignored. I’ve given talks at other parishes and have been well received. In talking about it with the pastor or other priests from the parish, they often tell me that they have been preaching about the same thing for some time and their parishioners reacted as though they were hearing it for the first time from me. Perhaps it has something to do with novelty. They had gotten used to hearing from their own priests, but now they were hearing from someone else. Although the message was not new, the messenger was. In other cases, it is something about the messenger himself or herself. Simply because they don’t like or respect the messenger, they ignore any message offered. That seems to be the case with the episode in today’s gospel reading. The “home town crowd” had already made up their minds about Jesus. The importance of His message and the works He had been to perform elsewhere didn’t seem

to make a difference. In other settings, the crowds saw Jesus as doing and saying something new. Although much of His message was not all that different than what the “Law and the Prophets” had proclaimed, He “taught with authority, unlike the scribes.” Although the idea that accepting or rejecting the messenger can lead to ac-ceptance or rejection of the message, that notion is even more significant with Jesus. He is not only the messen-ger, but He is also the message itself. He is the Word made flesh, the embodiment of the message. That’s why His teaching carried more authority. He was not merely passing on a message He had received from someone else as the prophets of old had done when God sent them to the people with the message He gave them. Jesus and the message were one and the same.

There are two parts to any form of communica-tion: the sender and the recipient, the transmitter and the receiver. You can broadcast a powerful message, but if no one listens, there is no real communication. Television and even radio live and die by their ratings. They are constantly checking to see how many people watch or listen to what they put on the air. As good or as important as a program or message may be, it counts for nothing if no one is paying attention. The prophets had powerful messages. They came from God. But as our first reading points out, the messages went unheeded because the people did not listen. With the myriad of television channels, radio stations, billboards, websites, etc., there is no lack of “transmissions.” And there is no way we can “receive” all of them. We choose what we want to see and hear; we change the channel or just “tune out” the ones we don’t want. The senders of that information are doing their job. Some are better than others at getting us to “tune in” or pay attention. But the real power of communication is in our hands, our hearts, and our minds. We make the choice to complete the circuit that is communication and sometimes those choices are based on the instrument that carries the tune.

This is the Easter Sacrament because the Eucharist makes present all the Paschal Mysteries of Christ, and is the completion of the Paschal Mysteries of His life, death and resurrection.

GREAT NEWS! Our parish is in the process of updating our Family Database and Census Reports. It’s been some time since our last update and as you are aware life has a way of changing on us. Some of you have moved, changed your phone number, added a cell phone number, married off your children, added children, or lost a loved one in your family since the last time our records were updated. Some may have had their status as a family member change. Some of you are Snow Birds and would like to have access to your St Germaine fam-ily while you are away. Our new program gives you an option to stay connected. If you choose you can have access to local information at your fingertips. If you do not want your information accessible you have that option as well. However, this update will give you the option to update and have access to your own information, to your offertory information and to our calendar of events so you can see parish events that may be of interest to you. There are a few ways we are trying to accomplish this task. We will have a print out for you to preview in the church vestibule after masses. ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and physical strength during a serious illness, as well as near the time of death. This Sacrament offers peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that are associated with disease, illness, or dying. People of all ages can avail themselves of the grace of this Sacrament. Anointing of the Sick is encouraged for anyone that is in danger of death from sickness or old age and also immediately before a serious opera-tion. Those suffering from severe mental disorders are also encouraged to seek the peace of Christ in the Anointing. This Sacrament can be repeatedly administered to a person if his/her condition becomes worse, or a new serious condition develops, and is recommended for the elderly as they become more and more frail. Alumni Update Katie Scholl - Class of 2008 After graduating from St. Germaine, I attended Marist High School and then the University of Illinois where I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and a minor in Business. I began my working career in 2012 as an economic consultant, supporting testifying experts in antitrust matters through research and data analytics. While working as a consultant, I decided to continue my education and pursued a MBA degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. After working full time and attending classes in the evening, I finally completed my MBA degree in June 2017. Recently, I made a pivot in my consulting career from economics to strategy and operations consulting in the higher education space. Although it has been almost 14 years since my time at St. Germaine, I have stayed close with many of the friends I made in my graduating class. Attending St. Germaine taught me the importance of a good education and the value of long lasting friendships.
