HOLY FAMILY

In the secular world Christmas is already over. In the Church, however, we celebrate until the feast of the Baptism of our Lord on January 12. Through this extended season of celebration the Church is saying, "Christmas is too much of a mystery to celebrate in one day. We will take two weeks to ponder its meaning." As part of this celebration we ponder the mystery of the Holy Family today.

Today we hold up their example and ask their intercession for our families. Whatever our living situation, we can draw strength from the Holy Family, wheth-er we are two-parent families, single-parent families, single people, religious or anything in between, we can learn from the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Some people might say, "There is no way we can be like the Holy Family. They were all saints! They had it made. How can I relate them to my family? How can the Holy Family empathize with me?" At first glance this may appear true but upon further examination we can see the great difficulties in life that the Holy Family experienced. What are some things that we can learn from this humble family of Nazareth? There are many lessons but, following a writing by Pope Paul VI for this feast, I will choose three; silence, work, and generosity. As we imagine the tranquil homestead of Nazareth we can be sure there was a peaceful silence that hung over the homestead. In the silence of the heart God speaks and these three people were at work seeking the will of the heavenly Father every day. In order to do this they had to drown out the many other noises present around them. Can you envision Mary sitting quietly every day in a small prayer room? This was probably the setting the day the archangel Gabriel ap-peared to her asking her to be the Mother of God. With that special day of the Annunciation her days of prayer did not cease. We can imagine her bringing her young son with her to read the Torah and spend time listening to the voice of the heavenly Father. How can we bring the silence of Nazareth to our homes? How can we listen to the voice of the Father every day? Silence was an essential part of the voice of Nazareth because it allowed the voice of God to be heard. Work was another element of Nazareth. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of workers and he helps to show us the dignity of human labor. We can imagine young Jesus learning the skills of a carpenter at the side of his Father as his moth-er worked around the house. In work humans reflect the glory of God who creat-ed the universe. Does our attitude towards work reflect that of the Holy Family? Generosity would be the last trait I would examine today from the Holy Family. No sacrifice was too great for the Holy Family to make for the heavenly Father. In Jesus’ ministry he reached out to the anawim, the poorest of the poor, the blind, the poor, the lepers, the outcasts. This was not a spontaneous action but undoubtedly something learned from His days at home where his parents would show love and concern to all those in need, even though they themselves did not have much. Today we stop and thank God for the gift of family. They are the building block of society and the sanctuary of life. We thank God for our families that God has entrusted to us. We thank God for the example of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We are thankful for our many beautiful families here at our church. We ask for the grace to be silent so as to hear the voice of the Father, strong to complete the work set before us and generous to give our entire lives to God so that God may be glorified in everything. -Fr. Tim McKeown

has been brought to this special time. Thank you!
