BOSOM Buddies is a locallyfounded support group forwomen affected by breastand other cancers.

One of Bosom Buddieskey messages is: ‘‘Be breastaware, and remember: earlydetection saves lives’’.

Now in its 13th year, it’smonthly meetings, Febru-ary to November, are held atthe RFDS Cafe to offer peersocial and emotional sup-port in an informal,confidential and friendlyenvironment.

Over a coffee or a cuppa,women come together toshare experiences, becomeinformed and gain hope andencouragement duringtreatment and recovery.

Family members orfriends are also welcome.

The support and under-standing of others who havebeen through similar exper-iences can be helpful aswomen and families adjustto what is a life-changingexperience.

Bosom Buddies engageswith other community or-ganisations to addressneeds of people in our com-munity affected by cancerand its treatments.

The most recent exampleof this has been the tre-mendous generosity of theLions Club of Alice Springs,which has responded to ap-plications made to them.

The first, supported alsoby the Australian LionsFoundation, resulted in adonation of $17,400 to pro-

vide a scanning laser for thePhysiotherapy Departmentof Alice Springs Hospital, toenhance treatment optionsfor patients suffering fromlymphoedema, a conditionwhich can result from can-cer treatment.

More recently, the LionsClub of Alice Springs hasprovided the funding to en-able the Yoga After CancerProgram to continue for afurther 12 months.

This program, originallyfunded under the AliceSprings Town Council’sHealthy Communities In-itiative, is conducted by

Fiona Gordon at TraegerAve Physiotherapy Clinic,and is greatly appreciatedby those recovering fromcancer.

They can attest to its heal-ing benefits, mentally, em-otionally and physically.

Bosom Buddies is gratefulto the Lions Club and itsmembers for their terrificcommunity spirit and gen-erosity in making such adifference in the lives oflocal people impacted bycancer.

Breast cancer remains themost common canceramong Australian women(excluding non-melanomaskin cancer).

Survival rates continue to

improve in Australia, with89 out of every 100 womendiagnosed with invasivebreast cancer now survivingfive or more years beyonddiagnosis.
