About the AMRUT City:
Overall Profile of the City-
i. Asansol Municipal Corporation is the largest corporation in terms
of area and 2nd populous City in the West Bengal covering an area
of 326.48 sq. km. and population 11,56,387 (as per Census 2011).
It emerged as a Municipal Corporation in the year 1994 by way
of a merger which brought together the Burnpur Notified Area,
some rural parts of Asansol Block and some colliery areas with
erstwhile Asansol Municipality. Now Asansol Municipal
Corporation emerged as a big Municipal Corporation this year i.e.
2015 by way of a merger of Kulti Municipality, Jamuria Municipality
and Raniganj Municipality.
Maintaining the tradition of civilisation settlements grew in and
around the river Damodar and Ajay during the British period.
Railways and road network developed gradually making this area
one of the most prosperous and fast developing urban centre in
India. Population is growing leaps and bound both naturally and
through migration.
The city also has a mining-commercial centre in West Bengal.
Thus today Asansol has a features of mixed culture and
cosmopolitan character unlike most of the towns in West Bengal.
The administrative authority of Asansol provides its citizens all
basic services and amenities. However in the last 60 years the
manner in which the population had grown, put a tremendous
pressure on land and infrastructure, economy and society.
The Asansol Municipal Corporation grown into a vast service city
from the industrial as well as mining point of view and for which
the rate of traffic congestion is becoming high day by day and to
cope up with the present situation of traffic congestion it has
become essential to increase bus terminus in the city.
Base Map of Asansol Municipal Corporation Area
ii. Asansol is located in the Burdwan District of West Bengal. While
most of Bengal is flat alluvial plain, Asansol subdivision lies on
exposed Gondwana rocks and consists mostly of undulating laterite
soil. It forms the lower Chota Nagpur plateau, which occupies most of
Jharkhand. It is located between two mighty rivers, Damodar and
Ajay. Another river, Barakar joins the Damodar near Dishergarh. A
small rivulet Nunia, flows past Asansol. While Dhanbad district
lies on the western side, Durgapur sub division of Bardhman
district lies on the eastern side. To the south, across the Damodar
River are the Purulia and Bankura districts. To the north are Dumka
and Birbhum districts. Dhanbad district across the Barakar River in
Jharkhand is also a major mining area and has close links with
Asansol. Both lie in the Damodar valley.
There is a Vishnupur style temple in Chhotodighari village providinga clue to its links with Vishnupur. The local dialect and culture of theregion has closer affinities with those of Bankura and Vishnupur thanthe other neighbouring areas. It is evident that the area was part ofdifferent kingdoms at different points of time.
The Ghagarburi temple on its banks attracts devotees round the year. While most of Bengal is flat alluvial plains, Asansol subdivision lieson exposed Gondwana rocks and consists mostly of undulatinglaterite soil.
