August 2017 Who are the WARF lifeGuards? WARF Warrenton Aquatic & Recreation Facility We are high schoolers. For many of us, it is our first job. We work a day or two after school and on weekends. Some of us are saving for cars or college. Others of us just want pocket money. We are thankful for a paying job where we can mature and grow. We are parents, moms and dads, some of us single parents. We add extra income to the family finances or help put our kids through school. Some of us work during the day while our kids are at school. We found an extended caring, loving WARF family that supports us in many ways. We are local college kids from LFCC, NOVA, and George Mason paying tuition. Some of us are catching our breath for a semester or are on gap years. Some of us are recent college graduates looking for the perfect full time jobs in our fields. The WARF has proven to be a resourceful network in many ways. We are the new young retired generation. We like to keep busy and get a free membership at the WARF. We also sit in the hot tub on our days off. We are gregarious and love to laugh and like the 4:30am shifts. We love helping others and being a part of the community. We are reserves and future soldiers of our United States military. We workout in the weight room, run on the trails, and swim laps. The WARF has supported us every step of the way and thanks us for our dedication to our country. We are the in-betweeners. In between jobs, in between this and that, in between seasons in our lives. WARF gives us flexibility in shifts and days. Who are the WARF guards? We are you! Come join us! We are now hiring fall and year-round guards. Need certification? Our next pretest is August 4th from 7-8:30pm followed by a four day certification class August 5th – 8th from 9am – 4pm. You must be present all four days. A limited number of partial and full need based scholarships are available for any applicant(s) willing to commit to the WARF. Questions? Contact Denise at [email protected] or 540-349-2520.

WHy Water? Whether you are old or young, athletic or not so fit, exercise in the water offers every type of program that you may find on land, but with less wear and tear on the body. In water, anyone can exercise to improve or maintain fitness levels, work out pain free, use powerful movement, or float freely like an astronaut. The benefits from water exercise easily compete with those gained from training on land. When trained properly, individuals experience greater improvements with less pain and in a safer environment. Training in water can maintain muscular strength, balance, mobility, agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. The key is to have a progressive exercise inventory for a total-body program. Research has confirmed that simply dropping land movements into water will not elicit the same intensity or results as doing those moves on land. However, using the protection of the water andwater-specific equipment is the key for keeping programs progressive, interesting, and, most importantly, effective. Here are some advantages of water exercise: Water dissipates blood lactate, with the massage effects of water helping with recovery. Weak muscles are naturally strengthened, while tight muscles are naturally stretched. This helps with injury prevention. Hydrostatic pressure adds traction, decreases inflammation, and provides multidimensional resistance. Water offers security, confidence, and the ability to move. Fall prevention may be trained safely with movement cushioned by water surrounding the body. Core musculature is constantly engaged (when moving against water and staying off the wall). If you would like to try a water workout, the WARF offers a variety of shallow water, deep water, and lazy river classes. Go to www.warffitness.com to view our Group Fitness Brochure with all of our water and land class offerings.
