Mediante Die Festo In the middle of the Feast
In the Orthodox Church, in our attempt to literally remain
on the path of Christ, before and after the major feasts, we
have pre-feasting (pre-announcing and gradual entering
into the spirit of the celebration) and after-feasting (that is
a rekindling of the joy of the feast). Since we are in the
middle distance between Holy Pascha and Pentecost, on
the Wednesday of the fourth week after Pascha, we also
observe the so called mid-feast.
In the Latin translation of the Bible, called Vulgata, the
words for “In the middle of the feast” are “mediante die
festo.” I chose these words for a title just to catch your
attention, and I hope I did, because the Resurrection is so
significant that we should celebrate it every single day.
Then, the Pentecost is certainly the cherry on the cake of
our faith. On this day, the Liturgy is celebrated, the Small
Blessing of the Water is performed and the fields are
usually blessed to bear abundant crops.
In the Gospel of Saint John (7, 14), we learn that “in the
midst of the feast Jesus went up into the Temple, and
taught.” He gave us His Word as “the living water”. At
this celebration, this renewal of Pascha, as we sing Christ
Is Risen, we also sing a special troparion: “In the middle
of the Feast, O Savior, fill my thirsting soul with the
waters of godliness, as You did cry to all: If anyone thirst,
let him come to Me and drink (John 7:37). O Christ God,
Fountain of our life, glory to Thee!”

Mediante Die Festo In mijlocul praznicului
În Biserica Ortodoxă, în străduința noastră de a rămâne
pe calea lui Hristos, înainte și după marile sărbători,
avem o înainte-prăznuire (care ne introduce în praznicul
ce urmează) și o după-prăznăuire (care reînnoiește duhul
serbării trecute). Deoarece suntem la mijlocul distanței
dintre Paști și Rusalii, în a patra miercuri de după Paști,
ne bucurăm de mijlocul praznicului.
Întrucât în Biblia latină, numită Vulgata, cuvintele “la
mijlocul praznicului” sunt “mediante die festo”, le-am
ales ca titlu, doar ca să vă câștig atenția. Sper că am
reușit, deoarece Învierea este atât de semnificativă încât
ar trebui serbată în fiecare zi. Apoi, Rusaliile sunt cireașa
de pe tortul credinței. În această zi, pe lângă Sf. Litughie,
se face Sfințirea Apei și se binecuvintează holdele ca să
aducă roadă bogată.
În Evanghelia după Ioan (7,14), învățăm că “în mijlocul
praznicului Iisus S-a dus în templu și a învățat pe
oameni”. El ne-a dăruit Cuvântul, “ca apă vie.” La acest
moment liturgic, de înnoire a bucuriei Învierii, pe lângă
Hristos a înviat, cântăm de asemenea troparul următor:
„Înjumătăţindu-se praznicul, sufletul meu cel însetat
adapă-l cu apele dreptei cinstiri de Dumnezeu,
Mântuitorule; că tuturor ai zis: cel însetat să vină la
Mine şi să bea! (Ioan 7,37) Izvorule al vieţii, Hristoase
Dumnezeule, slavă Ţie“.

serve the Akathist and special intercessions for the sick
and for the medical workers. The service will be live-

Samariteanca - Ioan 4
Iisus călătorea odată
Spre Galileea, ţara Sa.
Mersese dimineaţa toată
Şi miez de zi acum era.
Arşiţa grea îl copleşise
Şi Domnul, de drum ostenit,
Lang-o fântână se oprise
Iar ucenicii au pornit
Spre o cetate-apropiată,
Unde voiau a cumpăra
De-ale mâncării, fiindcă iată
Că şi foamea îi chinuia.
Iisus rămase la fântână
Şi ostenit şi însetat.
Era fântâna cea străbună
De unde patriarhii-au luat
Sute de ani, apă curată
Şi bună, pentru toţi ai lor
Dar Domnul nu putea să scoată,
N-avea găleată, nici ulcior!
El aştepta privind în zare
Şi iată, din Samaria,
Grăbită, o femeie-apare
Cu un ulcior, apă să ia.
Ea scoate apă-n mare grabă
Fără să zică vre-un cuvânt.
Nu dă bineţe, nu întreabă
Nimic. Privi doar la veşmânt
Şi înţelese că străinul
Ce stă tăcut şi-ngândurat
Este iudeu.. Dar pelerinul
Nu se arată supărat
Şi El nu ţine deloc seamă
Că ea e din Samaria.
N-are dispreţ, silă sau teamă
Să se apropie de ea
Ci El, cu glas duios îi zice
Încet şi simplu: “Dă-mi să beau!”
Femeia, ochii să-şi ridice
Se teme, pentru că nu au
Iudeii nici o legătură
Cu ei, cei din Samaria,
Ci sunt priviţi numai cu ură,
Deci, cum îi cere El să bea?
Femeia, uluită tare,
În loc ulciorul să i-l dea,
Îi adresează o-întrebare:
“Dar cum se poate-aşa ceva?
Tu, un iudeu, ceri de la mine,
Samariteancă, precum vezi,
Apă să bei? Nu-înţeleg bine?
Se cade asta? Tu ce crezi?”
Ca drept răspuns, Iisus îi zice:
“Femeie, de-ai fi cunoscut
Pe cel ce pacea poate-aduce,
Tu singură ai fi cerut
Şi Eu ţi-aş fi dat apă vie
Iar tu ai fi dorit să bei,
Să nu-însetezi o veşnicie!
Aşa o apă, tu nu vrei?
“Doamne, fântâna e adâncă
Şi apă n-ai cu ce să scoţi!
Dar apă vie, din ce stâncă
Ar putea curge? Ce socoţi?
Eşti Tu oare cumva mai mare
Decât străbunii ce-au săpat
Fântâna binefăcătoare?”
Zise femeia c-un oftat.
“Oricine bea această apă,
Mult prea curând va înseta
Însă acel ce se adapă
Din apa vie ce-o voi da,
N-o să-înseteze niciodată!
Ba mai mult, ea s-o transforma
Într-un izvor şi minunată
Va fi în veci curgerea sa!”
“O, Doamne, dă-mi te rog şi mie
Aşa o apă, precum zici!
De voi avea o apă vie,
N-am de ce mai veni aici,
Că sete n-are să-mi mai fie!”
Dar Domnu-i zise dintr-o dat”:
“Ascultă ce-ţi vorbesc Eu ţie:
“Cheamă-l aici pe-al tău bărbat!”
Dar ea oftă încă o dată
Şi îi răspunse: “N-am bărbat!”
“De cinci ori ai fost măritată
Şi cel de-acum nu-ţi e bărbat!
Aici rostit-ai adevărul!”
Zise Iisus îngândurat.
Femeia, potrivindu-şi valul
Şi-ascunse chipu-îndurerat
Şi zise: “Doamne, văd prea bine
Că stau de vorbă c-un prooroc!
Aş vrea să mă-înveţi şi pe mine
Care-i adevăratul loc
De închinare? Pe-acest munte
Sau în Ierusalim, la voi?”
“Vor trece zile nu prea multe
Până primi-veţi haruri noi.
Vă veţi putea ruga oriunde,
Dacă voiţi într-adevăr,
Nu doar în templu sau pe munte,
Ci simplu,-n har şi-n adevăr!
Astfel de-nchinători doreşte
Şi Tatăl nostru cel de sus!”
“Da, ştiu, Mesia când soseşte…
El va avea multe de spus!”
Zise femeia încurcată.
(Parcă nici grai nu mai avea!
Aşa de emoţionată
N-a fost nicicând, în viaţa sa!)
Iisus îndată se ridică,
Priveşte dincolo de ea,
Apoi continuă să zică:
“Mesia-i cel din faţa ta!”
Femeia aruncă ulciorul.
Nici apă nu-i mai trebuia!
Fugi să spună adevărul
Tuturor din cetatea sa.
“Veniţi, aflaţi vestea cea bună!
Hristos-Mesia-a apărut!
L-am întâlnit jos, la fântână,
El mi-a spus tot ce am făcut!”
Locuitorii din cetate
Veneau să-L vadă pe Iisus
Şi au crezut, ascultând toate
Cuvintele ce El le-a spus,
S-au adăpat din apa vie
A Logosului întrupat.
Dar astăzi, oare cine ştie
Că Duhul Sfânt a fost vărsat?
Tu ai aflat că pentru tine
Hristos a fost crucificat?
El vrea să-ţi fie ţie bine
Şi să te scape de păcat!
Dear Parents & Campers,
Christ is Risen! I pray that you and your family are all
doing well and in good health!
At Camp Vatra, our first priority is the safety and well-
being of the students and staff entrusted to our care. As
you know, these are difficult and challenging times with
the emergence and spread of the COVID-19
coronavirus. It has affected, to various degrees, almost all
aspects of public and communal life throughout the
world. Regions of Michigan have been especially
affected.
It is with much sadness, but with profound sense of
responsibility, that His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel
and the Camp Vatra Directors have decided to CANCEL
the Summer 2020 sessions of Camp Vatra for Seniors
and Juniors. We pray that by Summer 2021 the medical
community will have developed the necessary
preventative measures and treatments necessary for
controlling this pandemic to the point where communal
activities can again take place safely.
Even though we will not gather in person as usual, we are
working to organize some “virtual camp” activities during
the Summer months that will enable us to remain in
contact via the electronic means of communication. We
will announce those activities on our Camp Vatra
Facebook page (facebook.com/CampVatra)!
Let us keep our faith alive and hope in our Lord Jesus
Christ who loves us all and who will deliver us from all
harm and danger. Let us remember His words from the
Scripture, “no one will take away your joy from you”...
and so, let us make the best of the situation at hand and
keep a positive attitude, pray for one another, and occupy
our time productively with study, good readings, hobbies
and healthy activities. Most of all, let us keep in contact
with each other and our families!

”De Ce se ridică troițe la marginea
drumului?”
Troița se ridică mai ales la răspântii,
amintindu-i călătorului că pe orice drum ar
apuca, Dumnezeu este cu el.
Există acest obicei de sute de ani, de a
așeza la răscrucile drumurilor câte o cruce
înaltă de lemn, numită Troiță (în Moldova
i se mai spune Sfântă,iar în Ardeal, Rugă).
Ele sunt asemenea unor mici altare, așezate
la răspântiile drumurilor pentru a-i proteja
pe călători și pentru a le aminti drumeților
de Dumnezeu și de rugăciune. Troițele ne
”spun” că la fiecare pas Dumnezeu este cu
noi, că niciodată pe drumul vieții nu
suntem singuri, pentru că mereu suntem
însoțiți de îngerul nostru păzitor. La fel ca
și în cazul bisericilor, creștinii se închină
când trec prin fața unei troițe, în semn de rugăciune și
mulțumire.

El îţi va dărui şi ţie
Ca şi femeii, altădat’
Acest izvor de apă vie:
Pe Duhul binecuvântat!
Vino, să bei apă curată
Din acest minunat izvor!
Să nu mai însetezi vreodată!
Să bei acum şi-n viitor!
Mergeţi, creştini, cu râvnă mare

Fourth Sunday of Lent The Samaritan Woman
I am the woman Christ met at the well
My life was a mess, it was like living in hell
Until I came across a man like no other
I was a Samaritan and He was a Jew but I felt like his brother
He asked me for a drink from the well so I filled my cup
He spoke of me and my life and I listened up
He knew all about me and my life full of sin
He knew the shambles that my relationships have been
He said “Drink of my living water and you will never thirst”
You can turn your life around even at your worst
My heavenly and living water will set you free
Your bonds will break just believe in Me
He spoke to me with compassion saying “I am the One.
I am the Messiah, Christ, God’s only Son”
His Father is sitting on heaven’s throne above
Looked down on his people and the world with a heart full of love
I immediately left my water pot and went away
Realising how far I have gone astray
I was struggling with sin, unworthy and weak
But His gentleness changed me and now heaven I seek
I journeyed along and rushed into town
To tell the people about my smile and joy that once was a frown
People gathered around, I said, “The Messiah has come!
He came down to earth to save all people, not just some”
I went to the well as reject and as a woman full of sin
I returned with a full cup, and I had Jesus within
I have turned to Christ and His will; He is worthy of all praise
Therefore I will never thirst again for the rest of my days
