introduction

Sea technologies, including the branches devoted to innovation and new technologies, represent the opportunity to reacquire competitiveness and to drive the upgrading of the industry. The sea technologies chain includes knowledge-based companies inventing, developing, producing and distributing technological products or knowledge-intensive technological services specifically intended for the nautical and naval sectors. Sustainability is a central point for this industry and, therefore, Italian nautical companies have started to develop and implement managing and operational systems fulfilling strict technological innovation and environmental sustainability criteria, while maintaining the usual quality regardings the typical “Made in Italy” styling and functionality.Technological innovation represents a real opportunity to add new differentiation elements bringing new competitive advantages on international markets. Its development needs cultural commitment and investments in order to enable the application of new process and products.

Marineria Italiana - Italian Marine Network is not a common internationalization project designed for local companies, without any links to the national scenario. The strategic perspective of the project is innovative. Local dimension is overtaken through the creation of a wider system and the coordination with the national bodies in charge of internationalization activities.Marineria Italiana unites and coordinates all the bodies in charge of internationalization (ICE, UCINA, Chambers of Commerce, Italian Chambers of Commerce abroad, Regions, Embassies and Consulates) in order to contribute to the promotion of the Italian nautical industry in the world.Acting at a national level, with a coherent and recognizable image, it allows participating companies to benefit from greater exposure abroad from a system that is able to value Italian marine network, a gem of the “Made in Italy” in the world.

WTC GenoaGenoa,Liguria

the territoryand the sea

The related territorial system is located in the north-western region of Liguria, denoted by a strong marine vocation thanks to its 300 km long coast, its port and shipbuilding tradition. With regards to machinery and shipbuilding, some of the most relevant Italian industrial plants are situated in Liguria. As a consequence, it is evident that a multitude of satellite activities have developed next to those plants.High-technology industrial sectors are, as a matter of fact, one of the few emerging realities in the Ligurian economic scenario.Although historical plants are still present on the territory, the industrial system of the region has recently started to move towards activities related to the development of technologies and innovations, with a particular focus on biotechnologies, robotics and ICT.Concerning research and innovation, such a dynamicity is confirmed by both entrepreneurial initiatives and national economic strategies. The latter, in particular, have foreseen Liguria as a territory where

technology-intensive research projects should be concentrated. The Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa is a clear demonstration of this perspective: it is a centre devoted to the development and the promotion of scientific and technological excellences. It operates directly, through its multidisciplinary research laboratories, but also through the collaboration with national and internationals laboratories and research groups.
