A Publication of the Cursillo Movement of the Albany Diocese VOLUME 2017, ISSUE 1 JANUARY 2017 Happy New Year! 2016 was certainly a busy year for Cursillo. In late January we held a workshop, Be Still and Know that I Am God an introduction to Centering Prayer at Corpus Christi Church in Clifton Park attended by about 30 people. The workshop was preceded by a Brown Bag Lunch enabling us to share friendship before the workshop. During Lent about 40 of us shared a Soup Supper and companionship with parishioners of St. Jo- seph’s in Scotia. After the meal, we embarked on the Way of the Cross. A Diocesan-wide Ultreya held in April at Church of the Immaculate Conception in Glenville was attended by over 50 Cursillistas. We enjoyed pizza, salads & dessert prior to the Ultreya. We reconnected, welcomed home the snow- birds & shared out stories. In May we held an Information about Cursillo night at St. Ambrose Church in Latham. About a dozen people attended who were interested in learning more about Cursillo. The Commissioning Mass for the 2016 Women’s & Men’s Weekends was held in June at St. Pius X Church in Loudon- ville followed by the Annual Cursillo Picnic at the Cross- ings in Colonie. The Holy Hour for the Women’s weekend was held in August. Over 40 Cursillistas gathered, participated in the Holy Hour & shared a meal. The Women’s Weekend also was in August. Many Cursillistas attended the Closing & welcomed our new Cursillistas In September we had a day at Pyramid Life Center. We had a brief prayer service (Creation & Re-Creation) on Sat- urday & those who stayed over participated in a Commun- ion Service on Sunday. We spent our time enjoying the beautiful lake & each other. The Holy Hour for the Men’s weekend was held in Sep- tember. Cursillistas again gathered to participate in the Holy Hour & share a meal. The Men’s Weekend was held in October & Cursillistas gathered welcoming our new Cur- sillistas at the Closing. The Reunions for the Women’s and Men’s weekends was held on October 30 th . Following the Reunions we shared a meal & had a Diocesan Ultreya. For the third year Lessons and Carols sponsored by Cur- sillo was held at St. Edward’s Church, Clifton Park. It was a wonderful spirit-filled event. As we embark on a New Year many events are being planned by your Secretariat for 2017. The first one will be a Diocesan Ultreya on Sunday, January 29nd at 1:30. We will also be launching a new website during 2017 and we are very excited about this endeavor. Until it is launched you will be able to keep up to date regarding Cursillo events on the old website. Linda and Tom Message from the Lay Directors School of Leaders In the fall of 2016, the School of Leaders relocated to St. Jude the Apostle School (STREAM room), in Wynantskill. The sessions began at 6:30 p.m., and were well received. From Oct. through Dec. 2016, we completed reading and discussing the book, The Holy Year of Mercy, by Pope Francis. In addition, Sr. Monica provided us with a compre- hensive list of Parables and offered thought provoking questions, for the selected Parables. Throughout 2017, she will lead us in further Parable reflections. During winter and spring 2017, we plan to explore litera- ture from the National Cursillo website, at www.natl- cursillo.org/. We will focus on our personal connection to Christ, and our roles as members of the Cursillo Movement. Watch for our monthly meeting announcements which will include the link to the article we will discuss. If possible, we will also provide the Parable(s) and related questions. This will be helpful for those unable to attend. In addition, direc- tions are always provided with each meeting reminder. We are excited to begin a new year of study and friend- ship. We look forward to seeing you at our 2017 winter/ Happy 2017 to everyone! In our School of Leaders this year we have picked the Theme of Parables. Jesus so of- ten spoke in parables and illustrated his teaching by draw- ing on everyday experiences. Our hope is that we can learn from them and grow in our ability to see God in the everyday events of our lives. Advent has ended and Christmas has been celebrated now it is our time to find ways to bring Christ to life in our own everyday experienc- es with one another. The extra time to listen, the refrain- ing from judgments, the smile, the note we write just be- cause we care, looking at the ordinary in a new way and seeing how extra-ordinary it all is. In the parables Jesus used images and characters taken from everyday life to create a story to illustrate his mes- sage. The other morning a friend and I were having break- fast at a diner and an older gentleman passed our table. We both looked up and gave him a friendly smile and said Happy New Year. A few minutes later the owner of the diner passed our table and took away our bill. He said it was paid for by an anonymous patron. When the man passed by later we smiled and said “Thank You” and he said, “For what?”. Silently we knew. Christ is present in the kind word; Christ is present in the unexpected gift; Christ is present in the knowing smile and thank you. It is so important to take the time in quiet moments of our day to just be aware of all the many opportunities we have to bring Christ to birth in this world. We don’t have to wait for the big events as most of our lives are made up of all the little everyday happenings. Perhaps when we get to- gether during the year we will have some opportunities to share with one another some of the “parable moments” we have experienced this year and what God was teaching us. Tell your stories so that we can all learn to recognize the presence and presents of God. May 2017 be a year of blessing for all. On December 18, 2016 about twenty Cursillistas came together for our annual Christmas luncheon. This year we met at I-Hop. We enjoyed a meal together and some good conversation. It is always good to get together and connect with other Cursillistas.

Warm hearts on a cold night!

"That my soul will sing praise to you and not be silent.

O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever." Ps 30:12

The Advent Lessons and Carols sponsored by Cursillo at St. Edward’s Church in Clifton Park

was a beautiful and inspiring experience for all who attended. It was a wonderful evening of

scripture and glorious music. A HUGE thank you to the St. Edwards music ministry for lead-

ing us in song, Father Pat Butler for his ongoing support of Cursillo, Cursillistas who were

lectors or sang with the choir, those who helped with hospitality, those who coordinated the

basket raffle, sold raffle tickets, bought raffle tickets, hosted raffle ticket sales at their parish

or made baskets for the raffle. Cursillo made over $3,000 in profit on the raffle.

It is a bit of work to get it all done, but this is one of our two fundraisers of the year along

with the year-end annual campaign. The funds are used to help defray the costs of

the weekends, sponsor candidates and accomplish Cursillo events that are held throughout

the year.
