    1. ADMINISTRATIVE AND TOURIST MAPS OF LAM DONGPROVINCE

    2. AN OVERVIEW OF LAM DONGLam Dong Province lies south of the Central Highlands, a mountainous regionsouth of Truong Son mountain range. Lam Dong borders on Khanh HoaProvince, Ninh Thuan Province and Binh Thuan Province to the east and the

    south, Dong Nai Province, Binh Phuoc Province to the west and Dak Lak

    Province and Dak Nong Province to the north.

    Area: 9,764 square kilometers (mountains and forests occupy 70 percent of

    the area).

    Population: over 1 million residents.

    Administrative units: Da Lat City, Bao Loc Town and 9 districts: Cat Tien,Lac Duong, Di Linh, Da Huoai, Bao Lam, Da Teh, Duc Trong, Lam Ha, Don

    Duong.

    3. THE MAKING HISTORY OF LAM DONGFor long, Lam Dong has been inhabited by the natives. However, according to

    data, the land was given any private name but part of the central South and

    the South with its names such as Son Dong, An Dong or Thuoc until the 17thcentury- the proven time recording the settlement of the Kinh at this place.

    The place-name of Da Lat was known after Alexandre Yersin- a Frenchdoctor of Swiss origin set foot in Dan Kia in Lang Bian plateau in 1893. AfterYersins discovery, the French surveyed and turned the land into a

    microcosm of Paris in Indochina to meet their demands for relaxation and

    disease treatment. In 1950, the former King Bao Dai launched Edict No.6and Decree No.3 QT/TD concerning the establishment of the Royal Courts

    Territory, changing Da Lat into a self-governing land (a visa is required for

    entrance to Da Lat. Under the former Saigon regime (1955- 1975), Da Latdeveloped certain fields such as tourism, culture, science, education, military

    affairs, and religion

    After 1975, Da Lat- Lam Dong has made dramatic strides. Remarkably, DaLat has been widely known as a world-class tourist city and convalescence

    center.

    4. THE ROAD TO LAM DONG PROVINCE

    Da Lat can be reached by road and air.

    By road: Getting to Da Lat along National Road 20, National Road 20B,

    National Road 27 and some provincial roads for arrival in the neighboringprovinces. Tourists can get there by renting motorbikes, cars from coach

    service firms and travel companies

    By air: Direct flights to Da Lat from Ho Chi Minh or elsewhere depart fromTan Son Nhat airport for a transit to Lien Khuong airport (30 kilometers

    from Da Lat) and vice versa. Lien Khuong airport is under renovation to

    become an international airport by 2006.

    5. PLACES OF INTEREST

    Than Tho (Lament) Lake Tourist Resort:

    Under the French domination, the lake was called Lac des Soupris and thenrenamed Than Tho (Lament). After 1975, Than Tho lake was dubbed Suong

    Mai (Dews early in the morning), 6 kilometers from the center of Da Lat tothe northeast in Ward 12. The lake hides itself amidst a green pine forestand tranquil landscape. Coming here, tourists will be told moving love stories

    and legends.

    Xuan Huong Lake:

    Located at the hub of Da Lat City on an area of around 38 hectares, XuanHuong lake looks like a crescent moon lying a little slantwise towards the

    northeast southwest. The lake is regarded as the heart of Da Lat City since

    it is surrounded by an asphalted road, green grass covers and rows of pine-trees, willow trees, apricot cherry blossom, creating poetic scenery. To the

    north of the lake is an international 18-hole golf-course; to the southeast of

    the lake is Da Lat City Flower Garden. Tourists can take a stroll or travel byhorse-drawn carriage around the lake to contemplate the lakes scenery, go

    yachting in the lake or sip coffee or wine at Thuy Ta restaurant and Thanh

    Thuy restaurant.

    Da Thien Lake- Thung Lung Tinh Yeu (Love Valley) Tourist Resort:

    Lying in Ward 8, 6 kilometers from the center of Da Lat to the northwest,

    Love Valley is very deep amidst towering pine hills and has long become anideal rendezvous for local lovers and travelers. Hence, the valley is named

    Valley dAmour by the French. In addition to Love Valley owning the beauty

    of a water-color painting, this area hosts Da Thien dam, which was built in

    1972 to create a lake for irrigational purpose. Tourists can go sightseeing,

    go camping, picnic, amuse themselves, enjoy delicious meals in restaurants

    and get a view of the surrounding scenery from the scenery-watching tower.

    Tuyen Lam Lake Tourist Resort:

    Tuyen Lam lake comes into being as a result of an intersection between Tia

    stream and the upper reaches of Da Tam River. According to muchexplanation, Tuyen means stream and Lam means forest. With an area

    of around 320 hectares, Tuyen Lam is the largest lake in Da Lat, around 7

    kilometers from the center of Da Lat City. The lake is clear and blue,reflects the image of clouds from the sky above and stretches away to the

    foot of a nice green hill- that is Truc Lam Zen monastery. Tourists can go

    angling, take a stroll by motorboat or go yachting in the lake to feel Nature-awarded fanciful and poetic scenery.

    Dan Kia- Suoi Vang (Gold Stream) Tourist Resort: To reach Suoi Vang,tourists go across a 12-kilometer rough stretch of road winding its waythrough undulating pine hills. At Suoi Vang, green pine hills are mingled with

    primeval forests that are home to plenty of rare and precious wild animals.

    Suoi Vang lake comes into being as a result of 2 dams blocking the currents

    of Da Nung River, which rises from Mt. Lang Bian. Suoi Vang lake includesDan Kia lake lying above and Ankroet lake below with its neighboring

    gleamingly white Ankoret waterfall clamouring all day and night. Suoi Vang

    lake has a capacity of 20 cubic meters of water for supply to the entire DaLat City and Ankroet hydroelectric plant. The place will become the largest

    tourist site in Vietnam in the future. The tourists that arrive in the highland

    city but do not set foot in Suoi Vang- Dan Kia are not considered to haveever visited Da Lat.

    Prenn Waterfall Tourist Resort:

    Lying in the boundary between Da Lat City and Duc Trong District, Prennwaterfall tourist resort is characterized by its lake, waterfall, pine forest,

    flower garden, zoo, specialty restaurant and temple to King Hung, Lac Long

    Quan and Au Co. Being around 6 meters high and 20 meters wide, Prenn

    waterfall is naturally endowed with a hollow vault deep in the cliff like agrandiose water cavern. Coming here, tourists can gaze with admiration at

    the waterfall by telpher, suspension bridge made of rattan and bamboo, orexcurse Thai Duong (Sun) stone garden, zoo, or highland crocodile lake.

    Datanla Waterfall Tourist Resort:

    Datanla waterfall sits in the middle of Prenn mountain pass, 6 kilometers

    southwest of the center of Da Lat City. The resort features waterfall, pineforest, primeval forest, flower garden, especially the Death Abyss with

    towering cliffs for adventurous sport games.

    Dambri Waterfall Tourist Site:

    Located in the outskirts of Bao Loc Town, Dambri waterfall tourist site

    represents lake, waterfall, pine forest, primeval forest, bamboo forest,

    caves, zoo, outdoor playgrounds, and the Ma minoritys villages. In additionto Dambri waterfall, 57 meters high and 30 meters wide in the middle of a

    primeval forest, down the lower reaches is a chain of magnificent waterfalls

    including around-60-meter-high Darasa waterfall and 20-meter-high Datonwaterfall. Whats more, a little far from the waterfalls is a vast grass hill

    with hundreds of hectares, well suited to ecological tourist development.

    Gougah Waterfall Tourist Resort:

    Gougah waterfall belongs to Duc Trong District, 38 kilometers from Da Lat

    City. The name of Gougah waterfall stems from the legend that Gougah

    waterfall used to record the footprints of Queen Nai Biut from the Champa

    Kingdom. The waterfall with a height of around 20 meters rises from DaNhim River. Besides the splendid and imposing waterfall, there exist pine

    forest, streams, flower garden, camping grounds, and poetic landscape.

    Pongour Waterfall Tourist Site:

    Since being renowned as the most magnificent waterfall in Lam Dong

    Province, Pongour waterfall, 40 meters high and 100 meters wide, depicts

    plenty of branches running swiftly through layers of towering cliffs downtowards a lake at the root of the mountain, making resounding echoes like

    thunder. Annually, on the night of the fifteenth of the lunar first month,

    tourists from elsewhere flock to this place to attend the Kho minoritysfestival called Pongour Full Moon Festival. The tourist resort lies in Tan

    Thanh Commune, Duc Trong District, 50 kilometers from Da Lat City.

    Bobla Waterfall Tourist Resort:Bobla waterfall, over 50 meters high and 30 meters wide, lies between the

    two hills looking like kneeling elephants. Bobla is transcribed from the

    language of the Kho minority, meaning the top of elephants tusk. In

    addition to magnificent resounding Bobla waterfall, the place hosts lakes,

    forests, flower garden, and restaurants, which satisfies tourists demands

    for excursion and outdoor activities. The beauty spot lies in Lien Dam

    Commune, Di Linh District, 80 kilometers from Da Lat City.

    Hang Cop (The Lair Of Tiger) Waterfall Tourist Resort:

    Situated in Tuy Son Hamlet, Xuan Tho Commune (Da Lat), the resort is 13

    kilometers southeast of the center of Da Lat City. Hang Cop waterfall with aheight of 25 meters sits in the middle of an extremely green primeval pine

    forest divided into 3 layers with grandiose, large natural stone caves.

    Cam Ly Waterfall Tourist Resort:

    Cam Ly waterfall entertains an attachment for Da Lat through poems, pieces

    of music and paintings since Cam Ly is the only waterfall to lie inside the city

    but maintain poetic beauty. The waterfall overflows into a large granitefoundation, producing a gently sloping current and then suddenly rushes

    down to the bottom of the waterfall, which forms a small lake. In addition toCam Ly waterfall, tourists come here to visit Cam Ly church with itsarchitecture modelled on highland communal houses, Cam Ly statue and the

    tomb of Mr. Nguyen Huu Hao, who is the father of Queen Nam Phuong- the

    last queen of the Vietnamese feudalism. The place-name lies in Ward 5, Da

    Lat City.

    Lang Bian Tourist Site:

    Located in Lat Commune, Lac Duong District, 12 kilometers from the center

    of Da Lat City, Mt. Lang Bian comprises 2 adjacent high mountains of over2,000 meters looking like a maids shapely bosom full of vitality and is

    considered the rooftop of the Central Highlands. The name of the mountain

    is closely attached to a legend about the love story between a young mannamed Lang- son of Chieftain KDenh from Lat tribe and a beautiful girl

    called Bian from Cill tribe. Since being forbidden to meet each other, the

    two lovers committed suicide to show their faithfulness. Feeling regret attheir death, Chieftain KDenh incorporated the three tribes of Lat, Cill and

    Sre into todays Kho tribe in order to leave the three tribes young men and

    girls free to choose their life partners. And since then, Mt. Lang Bian isnamed in commemoration of the faithful couple.

    Da Lat City Greenery And Flower Garden: (also called Bich Cau Garden)

    Situated in Ward 8, 2 kilometers from the center of Da Lat City, the garden

    features diverse types of special, imported flowers, rare and precious

    ornamental plants in Da Lat City, Lam Dong. Annually, on the New Year

    festival, the garden witnesses the organization of a spring flower festival

    and most recently, Da Lats Flower Festival.

    Mong Mo (Dream) Hill Tourist Site:

    Transformed from Rong (Dragon) lake tourist site, Mong Mo hill tourist site

    is adjacent to Love Valley tourist site in Ward 8, Da Lat City. At the top ofthe hill records the existence of the Virgin Marias statue, celebrities

    statues, sculptures, the miniature Great Wall, a stage of gongs

    Madagui (Madagoui) Forest Tourist Resort:

    The place-name belongs to Madagoui Town, Da Huoai District, 148 kilometers

    from Da Lat City. The tourist resort used to be named Suoi Tien (Fairies

    Spring) as a result of being crossed by Gui stream. Madagoui forest is a vastprimeval one bordering on Cat Tien national forest and features plenty of

    rare hundred-year-old wood, diverse types of orchids and many rare andprecious animals. Notably, Madagui forest tourist resort also possesses achain of interesting caves lying deep underground with a depth of 10- 12

    meters or on a high knoll of 10 meters above the earths surface. In

    addition, the place is characterized by its Thach Lam beach with scores of

    giant egg-shaped stones hiding themselves in the forest. Along the eitherside of Fairies Spring records the habitat of the Chau Ma minority and

    spring bathing-places in the forest.

    Cat Tien National Forest:

    Stretching across the three provinces of Lam Dong, Dong Nai and Binh

    Phuoc, Cat Tien national forest has long recognized by the UNESCO as

    World Biosphere Reserve. The forest describes plentiful and biologicallydiversified flora and fauna. Notably, the place hosts a community of single-

    horn rhinoceros with around 7- 8 individuals. Cat Tien national forest owns

    peculiar traits for ecological tourist development; however, according toregulations, the forest is allowed to receive the maximum of 200 visitors

    and tourist groups of no more than 100 visitors. Nearby (Quang Ngai

    Commune, Cat Tien District), there is a regionally significant archaeologicalsite, which was discovered and unearthed in 1985 with a length of scores of

    kilometers.

    Bidoup Mt. Ba Natural Reserve:

    Located in Lac Duong District, 15 kilometers from Da Lat City, Bidoup Mt.

    Ba natural reserve covers an area of 64,366 hectares. This is a subtropical

    forest, well suited for ecological tourist development with diverse flora and

    fauna. In addition, the natural reserve represents plenty of rivers, streams,lakes, waterfalls, wild landscape, fresh air and cool climate.

    ARCHITECTURAL AND RELIGIOUS WORKS

    Lam Dong Province Museum:

    The museum was once Mr. Nguyen Huu Haos villa, which was built as a gift to

    his daughter Queen Nam Phuong- King Bao Dais wife (Her maiden name is

    Nguyen Thi Huu Lan). After 1975, the place was used as Vietnam-The SovietUnion Friendship Recreation Center. The museum consists of 9 exhibition

    pavilions aimed at introducing the collection of Lam Dong Provinces culture

    and history, the natives peculiar traditional cultural traits, and the localitysrevolutionary history.

    Thien Vuong Co Sat Pagoda:

    The pagoda is also named Tau (Chinese) or Phat Tram (Buddha). It was builtby the Chinese monks and Buddhists in 1958 and then restored in 1989. This

    is a big pagoda with statues of Buddha and special relievos.

    Palace 1:

    To reach Palace 1, tourists depart from the center of Da Lat City alongNational Road 20 (Da Lat-Phan Rang), Tran Hung Dao- Hung Vuong route and

    turn right at Trai Ham crossroads along Tran Quang Dieu Street. Upon the

    formation of the Royal Courts Territory in 1950, King Bao Dai purchased thehouse from a French named Robert Clement Bourgary in 1949 and then

    rebuilt it into the courts governmental office. Along the entrance into the

    palace, there are two rows of lofty abele trees with their white bodiesstanding out from the green pine hill. Lying in the middle of the tranquil pine

    forest, Palace 1 conveys ancient, imposing but elegant traits. The palace has

    an underground trench open to Palace 2 and hosts branching entrances intocertain villas.

    Palace 2:

    Palace 2 was the summer villa of French Governor-general of IndochinaDecoux, and thus named Governor-general palace. Built from 1933 to 1937,

    Palace 2 sits on a pine hill on an area of 16 hectares at the top of Tran Hung

    Dao Street, 2 kilometers southeast of the center of Da Lat City. The placefeatures beautiful landscape and offers a looming view of Ho Xuan Huong

    lake through the canopies of pine leaves. Far from the distance is Doi Cu (Cu

    hill) with extremely green grass covers. Apart from 25 de luxe rooms,

    Decoux had his subordinates build solid secret tunnels linking to a winecellar, around 1.5 meters wide and over 1 meter high, and many solidly

    concreted nooks and crannies. Under the regime of Ngo Dinh Diem, Palace 2

    became the resort of Counsellor Ngo Dinh Nhus family. Palace 2 now servesas Lam Dong Province Peoples Committees guest-house.

    Palace 3:

    Palace 3 served as King Bao Dais summer villa and thus was called Bao Daipalace or Summer private residence. Situated in Ward 4, Da Lat City, the

    palace was built in 1938 by Architect Huynh Tan Phat and some French

    designers. Palace 3 is located on a pine hill and encompassed by park, royalgarden, and a small lake. The palace remains almost undamaged, arousing

    tourists feeling of a royal familys solemn but friendly, cosy atmosphere.

    Da Lat Railway Station:

    The vestige is situated in Ward 10, Da Lat City. Being 1,500 meters high

    above sea level, Da Lat railway station was constructed from 1932 to 1936,

    designed by two French architects and regarded as the biggest and most

    beautiful station in Indochina at that time. Going on a tour to this place,tourists will have a chance to contemplate the beauty of Da Lats vegetable,

    flower gardens, orchards stretching across terraced hillsides, gaze with

    admiration at Than Tho (Lament) lake from above and visit Trai Mat village.

    At Trai Mat village, tourists will have an opportunity to excurse Linh Phuocpagoda that is also called Mieng Sanh (glazed terra-cotta splinter) pagoda.

    Cobweb Castle:

    Cobweb castle, also named Hang Nga (Phoebe) villa, is located in 3 Huynh

    Thuc Khang Street, around 1 kilometer southwest of Da Lat City. With its

    peculiar architecture, the castle looks like a termitary or an ant-hill in thedistance. It was designed by Architect- Dr. Dang Viet Nga.

    Linh Phong Buddhist Nun Pagoda:

    The pagoda lies on a hill hidden from amidst the pine forest in Ward 10, DaLat City. In 1944, Linh Phong pagoda was made of wood and later decorated

    with solid granite and tiles. The place not only features tranquility and nice

    landscape but also draws tourists attraction to its unique decoration and

    architecture. Linh Phong is the largest pagoda of Buddhist nuns in Lam Dong

    Province and the most renowned one in the South.

    Linh Phuoc Pagoda:

    The pagoda is situated in Ward 11, Da Lat City. Despite its late inception in1949, Linh Phuoc pagoda becomes the choice of tourists from elsewhere

    upon their arrival in Da Lat thanks to its peculiar architecture characterized

    by huge statues of Buddha and the Great Bell of over 10 tons.

    Linh Son Pagoda:

    Linh Son is an ancient pagoda chosen as the office of Lam Dong Province

    Buddhism Association. The pagoda was built from 1936 to 1940, modelled onVietnam Buddhisms traditional architectural style on a hill and surrounded

    by a very green tea garden. In addition to a group of unique architectural

    vestiges, the pagoda hosts its adjacent Buddhology Basics Schoolspecializing in teaching Buddhistic scriptures to recluses in the province.

    Cam Ly Church:

    Built by a French Catholic priest from 1960 to 1968, the church featuresthe indigenous ethnic minorities distinctive architecture like a highland

    communal house. Its two roofs are 17 meters long on either side and covered

    with 80,000 tiles weighing over 90 tons. The church sits on a hill next to a

    waterfall of the same name (Cam Ly waterfall) in Ward 5, Da Lat City.

    Da Lat Main Church:

    The church is also named Cock church. Built by DIDEC for 11 years (1931-

    1942), the church is symmetrically designed in accordance with thetraditional classical style of Western churches with a 47-meter-high

    steeple. The church is also renowned for its echoes of 4 bells, and 70 panes

    of color glass on which the pictures of saints are painted artistically. Thesepanes are decorated close to the roof and around the church and the bronze

    cock that is placed at the top of the Cross on the ridge of the steeple

    Domaine de Maria Church:

    The church is inhabited by nuns of philanthropy descent in Ward 6, Da Lat

    City. The locals also call it the domain of Madonna and give it the

    Vietnamese name Mai Anh church because the hill supporting the churchwas once covered with striking cherry-blossoms. Despite being constructed

    for only 3 years (1940-1943), the church depicts special architecture and

    scale.

    Vietnam Biology Sub-institute:

    The building is now intended for scientific research and exhibition.

    Previously, it served as the Savior Institute affiliated to Catholic Church.Built in 1950, the building looks like a grandiose castle on a hill, 1,550 meters

    high above sea level. The building now makes a display of 2 universe models

    produced by the Soviet Union and then granted to Vietnam in 1989.Sofitel Dalat Palace:

    Sofitel Dalat Palace is the most ancient hotel that remains operative and

    also the only five-star hotel in Da Lat. Built from 1916 to 1922, the hotel isdeeply influenced by European style with its initial name Lang Bian Da Lat.

    Sofitel Dalat Palace not only features a typical order of architecture,

    occupies a nice site in Da Lat but also is a historical relic. The place used tobe inhabited by two delegations of the French colonists and Republic

    Democracy of Vietnam, who arrived in Da Lat to attend Fontainebleau

    preparatory conference in 1946. The hotel was also chosen by the VietnamCommunist Party Politburo to hold the summation conference of the 1975

    historic Ho Chi Minh campaign.

    Da Lat Teachers College:

    Upon its inception in 1935, the school was called Grand Lyce Yersin. In thepast, it is the biggest school of all in Da Lat aimed at training French

    students and the Frenchs generals in Indochina. After 1975, the school

    becomes Da Lat teachers college. This is the only architectural work of

    Vietnam to be listed among 1,000 most typical architectural works of themankind in the 20th century.

    Truc Lam Zen Monastery:

    Lying in Ward 3, Da Lat City, Truc Lam Zen monastery sits on the high

    summit of Mt. Phung Hoang (Phoenix), looking down Tuyen Lam lake. The work

    was built from 1993 to 1994 and designed by the famous architect Ngo VietThu. The monastery includes plenty of significant works. It serves as not

    only a place of worship, an area of study and meditation for Buddhist monks

    and nuns but also an exhibition center where the souvenirs offered byBuddhists all over the world are on displayDa Lat Flowers:

    Da Lat is considered the city of flowers since nowhere offers more charmingflowers than Da Lat. Every year, Da Lat organizes flower festivals which arefound nowhere else in Vietnam. The place represents a variety of flowers:orchids, cherry blossom, and roses, especially some kinds of flowers thatoriginate abroad. In addition, Da Lat features over 20 categories of

    chrysanthemum blooming all year round. Remarkably, the city offers wildsunflowers that are yellow, cluster along the streets and only blossom in thesunny season- the season of tourist welcome.

    7. MEANS OF TRANSPORT

    This is a long-standing traditional occupation in Da Lat. Currently, it ismostly found in Da Lat Su Quan (Da Lat Club-house) trade village tourist

    resort, affiliated to XQ Co., Ltd in Mai Anh Dao Street, Ward 8, Da Lat.

    Hand-embroidered paintings not only proves to be durable and striking butalso represents a variety of forms. Hence, these products are widely loved

    by foreign tourists.

    Rattan, bamboo knitting:

    Knitting rattan, bamboo to create household, fine art products such as

    flower baskets, closets, tables, chairs, cosmetics cases are a traditional

    occupation found in much of the province. At present, much of theproduction is done in Madagui (Da Houai District) and Hamlet 4, Da Kho

    Commune (Da Teh District).Silkworm raising, silk cord unraveling, silk weaving:

    Silk products have long shown fairly strong development in Lam Dong and are

    supplied to silk weaving mills and brocade weaving businesses in the province.

    Raising silkworms and producing silk products are mostly popular in Nam Ban

    Town (Lam Ha District) and Bao Loc Town.

    9. TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS

    In addition to such traditional festivals as congratulation on new crops

    (gongs, buffalo stabbing), and exhumation rites of the Kho, the Ma, theChu Ru, the Mnong Da Lat hosts many other festivals including Pongour Full

    Moon Festival that is celebrated at Pongour tourist site on the night of the

    fifteenth of the lunar first month, and Da Lats birthday commemorationfestival held every November. From 2005, Da Lat starts organizing Flower

    Festival on the Christmas Day and Valentine Day by mid-April (the lunar

    second month) every year.
