A number of schools have appointed full-time IT coordinators whose primary duty is supporting the pedagogical aspect of teaching through IT and helping teachers use technology to best support student learning, taking into account technological pedagogical content knowledge. This study explores the role of selected IT coordinators and examines what they do to improve teaching through IT in their schools. In examining these cases, this study will develop both practical knowledge and some general principles about what makes IT coordinators successful in today's schools.

Title: A Study of Information Technology Coordinators in Schools: Unique People for a Unique RoleName: David James WooProgram: PhDEmail: [email protected] words: information technology coordination schools TPCK

Information technology (IT) coordinators in schools are often teachers first and IT coordinators second, and their role as an IT coordinator has, in the past, predominantly focused on supporting technical aspects of teaching with IT.  However, the role of the IT coordinator in schools in Hong Kong may be changing, due to the increasing presence of IT in schools and changes to  specific ways that schools think about IT in education. This study will employ multiple-case study methodology with the IT coordinator being the unit of analysis.  Data will be collected by observing and interacting with selected IT coordinators at work.  The IT coordinators, principals and teachers will be interviewed.  Documents will be collected and a number of class lessons will be observed.
