MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES

The end of the trimester is quickly approaching and your students have been working diligently in all

areas to showcase their growing academic portfolios. Student-led conferences for all Middle and Upper

School students are an important milestone in creating confident learners who can communicate their

weaknesses and showcase their strengths. Emersion Term presentations will be from 10:00-11:30am on

March 13th at the Davis Street Gathering Space and families can then join us for conferences in the

Greenwood Terrace Gym in the afternoon of March 13th, and the morning of March 14th.

There will be no classes for Middle or Upper School students, as the faculty will all be present for

conferences. Students will lead the conferences using portfolios and teachers will be available for

additional questions and support. Reflecting on the success from our first round, this trimester we have

increased the number of simultaneous conferences, so that ten conferences will happen concurrently in

the gym. Please use the link below to sign up by writing your child’s name in a box at the time that works

for you. If you have more than one child, you should sign up for back-to-back times (ex. 1:30 and 2:00).

A NOTE ON TUITION:

This school year has been full of changes, and one more change is to the re-enrollment process. TBS admits students based on their merit—not their parents’ ability to afford tuition. To that end, contracts have been issued to families in advance of any financial aid award decisions being made. Some of the changes you will see in the 2014-15 contract process are:

Your deposit will be credited toward your tuition cost. All-inclusive tuition. In an effort to be up-front with extraneous expenses that pop up during the

year, this year’s tuition includes the following fees: registration, technology, Upper School books (if applicable); as well as grade-specific field trip costs.

Your contract reflects the full amount of tuition charges. Financial aid conversations and decisions are underway and will be completed in the coming weeks. Contracts will be adjusted and redistributed accordingly.

As stated in the State of the School Address (the presentation can be found here) there are budget pushers that affect our operational costs. Enhanced programming like drama instruction in the Lower School, fuller advisory in Middle and Upper School, more athletic teams, enhanced student support services, and new curriculum in the Lower and Upper School are significant needs; enhanced administrative leadership and confronting systemic challenges from years past are all issues we must contend with in the coming years.

We do not want cost to be a reason you choose not to re-enroll your child for the 2014-15 year. If you have concerns about the cost of tuition for next year, please contact Leanna Giles or Smokey Oats to discuss the financial aid opportunities that are available. It is not too late to apply! WINTER SPORTS RECAP

SENIOR NIGHT RECOGNITION CEREMONY

On February 4th in between the Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball games, senior student-athletes who participated during the winter sports season were recognized for their leadership and commitment to TBS Athletics. Athletic Director Ron Johnson said, "The very best interscholastic athletic programs encourage student-athletes to become leaders not only on the fields and courts but in the community as well... I believe we saw that in this year's group of seniors." During the ceremony, the student-athletes were escorted onto the court by their parents as the "voice of the Spartans," Loryn Payne, read a list of accomplishments and complimentary messages written by coaches about each senior.

POST SEASON RESULTS:

The Varsity Swim team participated in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) State Swimming Championship held January 17 at the Greensboro Aquatics Center. Over 50 Class 1A, 2A, and 3A schools from across the state made their way to Greensboro for the event.

Competing against teams with a larger number of participants, our TBS swimmers made a huge impact! Congratulations to Head Coach Emily Daniels and the Spartans Swim Team on a terrific year! The following are some of the highlights from the State Championships:

• Overall, our boys team finished in 11th place (of 32 1A and 2A schools)

• The boys relay team of Mitchell Holsclaw, Piotr Tarala, Brannin Webber, and

Philippe Weissenborn finished 12th (of 23) in the 200 yard Medley Relay

The following Winter Sport senior athletes were

recognized:

Boys Basketball- Josh Pennix, Asad Khan

Girls Basketball- Allie Bardes,

Maddie Crissman

Swimming- Meredith Piatt

• The boys relay team of Piotr Tarala, Mitchell Holsclaw, Tanner Slaughter, and Brannin Webber finished

10th (of 25) in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay

• Meredith Piatt captured 12th place

(of 26) in the 100 yard Butterfly.

Meredith also finished 12th (of 39) in

the 100 yard Backstroke

• Mitchell Holsclaw finished 12th (of 21)

in the 100 yard backstroke

• Piotr Tarala finished 4th in the 500 yard Freestyle

• Brannin Webber brought home two medals! He finished 2nd in the 100 yard Butterfly and the 200 yard Freestyle! The Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated Burlington Christian in the first round of the Triad Athletic Conference tournament but due to inclement weather, the tournament was unable to be completed. For the NCISAA state basketball playoffs, only 12 of 35 Class 1A schools are selected to participate in the tournament. The Spartans were awarded a very impressive sixth seed! The team began tournament play by defeating Hickory Christian Academy at home 63-31. Advancing to the State Quarter-finals, our boys team lost to a very talented and experienced Greenfield School team 75-50. The team finished the season with an impressive 23-4 overall record.

Romeao Ferguson, Raekwon Villines, and Sae'Quahn Rogers were selected to the Triad Athletic Conference (TAC) All-Conference Team

Sae'Quahn Rogers was selected to the NCISAA Class 1A All-State Team

Head Coach Ron Johnson was named TAC Boys Basketball Coach of the Year

WINTER SPORTS RECOGITION CEREMONIES:

Parents are encouraged to attend next month's Winter Sports Recognition Ceremonies. The ceremonies will take place as follows: Middle School Sports- Wednesday, March 26th at 8:00am on the Greenwood Terrace Campus Varsity Sports- Thursday, March 27th at 9:00am in the Davis Street Campus SPRING SPORTS PARENT MEETING:

There will be a meeting for parents of student-athletes who are competing in Spring Sports on Monday, March 3 at 6:00pm in the Greenwood Terrace Campus library. This is a great opportunity to meet your student-athlete's coach. Coaches will address team/athlete expectations, game day plans, season schedules, uniforms, parent questions, etc. We hope to see you on March 3, 2014!

A NOTE FROM COLLEGE COUNSELING:

Asad Khan of the Class of 2014 has been selected as a UVA Jefferson Scholars Finalist. In order to make it to the final round of competition, Asad was nominated by TBS, completed an extensive application process and progressed through two rounds of interviews at the regional level. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation receives approximately 1,400 nominations each year. From those nominations, 115 scholars progress to the finalist round. During a long weekend event in March, Asad will be interviewed again, complete math and writing tests and attend seminars while learning about UVA. Following the weekend, 33 students will be selected to be part of the prestigious Jefferson Scholars Program. The Scholars from outside the state of Virginia receive an annual stipend valued at over $53,000 in addition to enrichment activities throughout their four years at UVA. Academy (AYLA). The description is on the sheet attached to this week’s issue. In order to join, students

must attend the summer workshops at Elon University and submit a completed application to Pam

Weatherly by March 14th.

LUNCH SERVICE DISCONTINUED

We have recently learned from our lunch providers, Charli Girl Catering, that beginning on March 1, they will no longer be providing lunch service to the Greenwood Terrace Campus. Chef Bill and Heather Veraldi have sent their thanks to TBS parents for their support over the past few years, and while we lament the loss of their services, we do appreciate their dedication and delicious food they have provided the school. With this change, parents who had been utilizing the services of Charli Girl for their students' lunches will now need to make other arrangements beginning March 1. Think brown bagging! (Milk is still available for those who have signed up for that program.) If you have any questions, please let us know.

SCIENCE FAIR SUCCESS!

After successfully advancing past our school-level competition and the Piedmont Fair at High Point

University, TBS student and fourth grader John Stanfill won first place in the Region V Science Fair on February 22nd, while 5th grader Spencer Hood won 5th place - both will advance to the State Science

Fair! The 2014 North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair will host 64 competitors state-wide and will be held March 28-29, 2014 at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

KEEP ILLNESS AT BAY!

Recently, we have had a number of students leaving school early or missing school all together due to illness. We want to remind everyone that if your child is sick, they must be fever free for 24 hours before they may return to school. We suggest to parents during the cold and flu season to be sure their children get enough rest, exercise and proper nutrition. It's also important that we wash our hands thoroughly and frequently. If your child will miss school please email the Lower School teacher or the Middle School/Upper School advisor to let him/her know he/she is sick. If there is missed work, ask the teacher/advisor to collect the materials and have them available for you at the front desk. We hope we can keep our children healthy and in school by just following these few simple guidelines. -Leslie Blank, Community Life Facilitator
