Yeoval Central School Term 2 Week 5
21 May 2012
The School Athletics Carnival was held on Friday on a beautiful sunny day. Students had a wonderful day competing in a number of events and scoring points for their sporting house. The winning house was Farrer. Congratulations to all our age champions on the day. A list of results will appear in next week’s newsletter.
Selected students will now compete at the next level in an effort to gain selection in the Western team to compete at state level. Primary students selected in our school team compete at the District Carnival in Term 3. Secondary students qualify (times and distance) to compete at the Western carnival in early Term 3. Mr Olsson and Mrs Sargent will notify students about their selection. Congratulations sporting House Captains for the fantastic job you did organising relay teams and encouraging students to participate. Your house chants and war cry at the end of the carnival was the best we have heard.
We would like to pass on our appreciation to the P&C and parents who volunteered and catered for stu‐dent and parent refreshments / lunch at the school Athletics Carnival last Friday. Your support and work was acknowledged by everyone in attendance. It was great to see a number of parents attend the carnival and support our students.
Mr Olsson did a fantastic job organising the day with the support of all teachers. John Bernasconi, Principal
I would like to acknowledge the parents who volunteered once more to complete the Nit Buster’s program this term. A letter of appreciation will be sent to the parents involved. It is important that all parents keep an eye on the condition of their child’s hair and treat it accordingly when there are signs of activity. Our senior School Captains were to present a speech at the Cabonne Council Meeting this Monday. Unfortunately both students have Year 11 exams. A new date will be de‐termined. Mrs Johnson will be taking students to a Drumming Workshop this week. Our drum‐mers led the ANZAC march and are keen to learn more about the instrument. Their next performance should be something to look forward to. Our SRC is holding a treats day this Friday at recess. The money raised supports our sponsorship with World Vision and assisting students involved in school activities. Only a small amount of money is required for children to buy a treat at recess. COMING EVENTS: Term 2 21st May: Year 11 exams commence 23rd May: Mrs Allison completes her visit to Year 2 25th May: SRC Treats Day 28th May: 7‐10 Half Yearly exams and assessments commence 29th May: CWA Public Speaking > Bathurst 30th May: Boys choral workshop 1st June: All Year 9 – 12 DER laptops at school for programming 1st June: Primary District Cross Country > Tullamore

Year 11 have their Half Yearly exams commencing Week 5 (21 – 25 May). The timetable has been established and all students should be studying at home to equip themselves for the exams. Year 7 – 10 exams will be held in Week 6 (28 – 31 May). All students will have com‐pleted units of work in class that will be part of their exams. Students need to at‐tend school to complete exams and as‐sessments. Mr Olsson and Mr McLaurin will be away from school for four days this week. Both teachers are manager / coaches of West‐ern CHS teams at state carnivals. Mr Ols‐son is managing Boys Hockey and Mr McLaurin, Girls Soccer. A number of other teachers have com‐mitments to professional development activities that prepare programs for stu‐dents in Key Learning Areas at our school. Half Yearly exams are scheduled next week for students. It is important that parents know about their child’s progress at school. Our Reporting to Parents pro‐gram involves Parent Teacher Interviews Thursday 28 June. All parents should be available to discuss their child’s report with their teachers and be aware how they are progressing. To assist you in this process please con‐sider the following questions you could ask: What are they doing well? What do they need to improve? How does their work compare with oth‐ers or with Stage requirements/ What specific information or resources do they need?

There will be a large range of books, fiction and non‐fiction, as well as all the pencils, rubbers, sharpeners etc. I look forward to seeing many of you there. Annabel Gavin Teacher/Librarian NITBUSTERS We had another successful day on Wednesday with our NITBUSTING, all the kids were fantastic. We had some wonderful mums come along and help with the day. We would like say a big thank you to all our helpers. We seem to have made some progress with the number of nits definitely on the decrease, how‐ever it would be recommended that you treat your children one more time by Wednesday 23 May to try and decrease the ongoing problem. Notes will be sent home this week to let you know what the outcome was for the past two weeks. If you have any further queries you can contact the school or Belinda Lorimer.
APPS FOR LEARNING Young children love smartphones. Rather than just playing Angry birds, why not download some edu‐cational apps that are fun too? You can find them at many different sites including:

Don’t forget to download the terrific free app available at School A to Z for smartphones and tab‐let devices at: www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/about/mobile‐applications. HOMEWORK AND STUDY TIPS Homework helps distil and expand on concepts learned in the classroom. Relaxing, getting organ‐ised and using good time management are all ways to help make homework less of a stress for the whole family. For a host of great tips that will have your teen blitzing their homework, see the School A to Z homework tips under the homework and study link: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework‐and‐study/homework‐tips THOUGHTLESS EATING Being distracted at mealtimes, such as by watching television, can make you miss the signals from your body to say that you are full. This may cause you to overeat. Healthy eating habits develop from eating at the dinner table, paying attention to how much are eating rather than focusing on something else. It’s also a great way to spend time together as a family. AND turning off the TV means the kids won’t be ex‐posed to as much junk food advertising!

P & C NEWS
A big thank you to the 5/6 parents and friends who made the Athletics Carnival canteen so successful. It is early days yet but I am sure you raised a good sum of money to help offset the cost to Canberra. I would also like to thank the efforts of the P & C fundraisers who donated the food and drink for the 5/6 excursion.
Please remember that it is the P & C’s turn for Meals on Wheels for week commencing 28th May. At pre‐sent we have Monday and Tuesday covered but we have no‐one for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It doesn’t do our image any good to fail in this easy task. All you have to do is pick up two Year ten students at 11:45 am, take them to the UPA, collect the red bags from there, drive the students to the various houses, drop the bags off at the UPA once empty and then drop the students back at school when you are finished. You get a good feeling buzz, time with two fantastic teenagers, and my undying gratitude for half an hour (if that) of your time.
Someone else who will give you undying gratitude is Amanda Cameron. Please volunteer to help her out over the long weekend with the canteen for the bike rally. Contact her for details.
Not long now until we meet on the 12th June.
P&C Chair Gaela Elliott PARENTS URGED TO REMEMBER CYBERSAFETY
Aussie school kids are more connected than every with new Telstra research revealing four in five par‐ents will send their kids to school this year with an internet connected device.
Telstra’s Cyber‐Safety survey of Australian parents with children aged 10 to 17 revealed almost eight in 10 children own a mobile phone by the time they are 13 and seven in 10 will take one to school this year.
The research also found that while school bags are increasingly packed with internet connected gadgets including mobiles, laptops and tablets, nine in 10 parents have concerns about cyber‐safety risks such as approaches from online strangers and cyber bullying.
Telstra’s Officer of Internet Trust and Safety, Darren Kane, said it was important for parents to equip chil‐dren with the skills required to use new technology safely as they pack their gadget‐filled bags for school. “Our research found that parents’ cyber safety concerns don’t necessarily motivate them to prepare their kids for the digital schoolyard. Almost half of parents (45%) admitted they haven’t spoken to their children recently about how to handle approaches from cyber bullies and more than a third (37%) have‐n’t spoken to them about how to respond if a stranger approaches them online.”
While mobile phones and laptops are the most popular devices to take to class, one in three are return‐ing to school with a smartphone, while 6% will take a tablet to school this year.
Unsolicited contact by strangers is the single greatest cyber‐safety concern among parents (with 34% cit‐ing it as their top concern) followed by cyber bullying (15.3%) and unsupervised access to information (14.7%).
31% of parents haven’t spoken to their children recently about how to protect personal information like photos, address details and passwords when online while 42% of parents haven’t spoken to their kids about who they should share their mobile number with. www.tesltra.com.au/cyber‐safety
