After her hugely successful 2013 concert, Belgian neo-soul diva selah sue, one of the most important european artists of her genre, is returning to the A38 ship for a hopefully even more successful show. on this night, she is presenting us her latest album reason. With this concert, we are offering a dinner which costs 3500 ft. support comes from swedish-born singer Antonia Vai.

Beatles cover band Blackbirds, formed 11 years ago, are bringing a truly special prog-ram to the A38. it hasn’t been attempted in hungary before, and who knows, it might never happen again: we will have the chance to hear the last two Beatles albums in full, accompanied by string and wind instruments, and with a projection presented specially for this night.

two excellent, young and local singer-songwriters on the thematic weekly series of the A38; two musicians who teleport the country and the blues genre over to hungarian territory and transform them into an urban style. Zanzinger says he likes delta blues and Bob Dylan, but he doesn’t play American music - he plays his own. András Upor studied at goldsmith University in london and earned his degree there; beside folk and blues, he also takes inspiration from the rock music of the 60s and 70s.

hardcore / metalcore parade on board! the main act of this night, stick to your guns from California are presenting us their new album Disobedient, but it is also worth checking out the other bands: Australian party hardcore group Deez nuts, punk hardcore outfit trash talk, and last but not least, Being As An ocean, who play melodic metalcore.

something’s definitely happening in Denmark - it’s enough to think of widely known goth-punks iceage. on this night, another exciting Danish band is paying a visit to the A38: built around multiinstrumentalist Brian Batz, sleep party people wear rabbit masks and mix new wave, post-punk, shoegaze and post-rock with contemporary electronica. support comes from local band polar Dear whose style can be best described as romantic electro-pop.

terence fixmer is among the greatest reformers of electronic dance music: his naked, dark, industrial techno and his pioneering and groundbreaking eBm (reminiscent of the classic tracks of the 80s) has been on the radar for over a decade and a half since he released his debut work muscle machine on DJ hell’s emblematic label Deejay gigolo records. fixmer redefined modern techno and pushed its limits further. his latest work, Depth Charged, which counts as his absolutely most introspective so far, was released earlier this year.

one german and two local guitar pop bands share the stage of the A38 on this night. the picturebooks, hailing from gütersloh count as the Karl may of alt-rock-blues, as both lived through the americana atmosphere (as a matter of fact, though, may never really left his german hometown, whereas the picturebooks tour continuously). lo-cal support comes from garage-punk trio Dope Calypso and under-ground supergroup terrible ted.

James holden is a British DJ-musician-producer, a cult figure of the contemporary electronic music scene. he started his career at the end of the nineties, at age 19. he released his early singles at several labels, and in 2003 he created his own record company called Border Community. he has made remixes for Britney spears, Depeche mode and madonna among others, and his first long-player (released in 2006) was named one of the best electronic debut albums of all time by the guardian.

Bristol is the new project of marc Collin, known as the mastermind of nouvelle Vague. Whereas his main band likes to go back to the 80s, Bristol takes inspiration from the following decade - it is influenced heavily by 90s triphop: Collin transforms the best known songs of massive Attack, portishead, morcheeba and tricky into cool jazz and soundtrack atmosphere. the first Budapest performance of nouvelle Vague took place on the A38 - same as in the case of Bristol.

charming neo-soul singer-rapper akua naru has played on the a38 before, and now she is returning to enchant us with her outstanding repertoire. since her first performance on the ship, she has released a new album, so even if you attended last year’s concert, it’s worth seeing her again and hear her new songs.

Akua naru was born in new haven, Connecticut, later she lived in phi-ladelphia for a while, and after a trip that covered half this planet, she decided to settle down in Cologne, germany. Knowing this information, we shouldn’t be surprised that she called her first album the Journey Aflame, released in January 2011. it is safe to label her a world citizen, who was discovered by none other than tony Allen, mr. Afrobeat himself, who even asked the charming Akua to perform with her. the songs on her debut clearly had inspiration taken from the likes of erykah Badu and lauryn hill, which meant that the musical palette included soul, jazz, hip hop and funk.

the Journey Aflame went number one on the Us college radio charts, and her songs also became well-known in Western europe and the far east. the growing success also meant lots of collaborations: apart from

tony Allen (who said that she was “the keeper of the cool, cool flow”), she has worked or performed together with some of the most hyped names in the current music scene, including Blitz the Ambassador, elzhi, lords of the Underground, patrice, Ursula rucker and Wax tailor. Apart from recording and performing, Akua has also given some lectures at the hip hop Academy in hamburg.

in 2012, she released a live version of her first album titled live & Aflame sessions, and she resumed touring with her backing Digflo, the line-up of which includes musicians playing guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, wind instruments and turntables. As well as touring, she started to work on the follow-up to the Journey Aflame, and it was finally released this february with the title the miner’s Canary. on one hand, the songs recite the atmosphere of the debut, but on the other hand, they take the listener on a different journey. the album includes a variety of featuring guests: Cody Chesnutt, fetsum, jazz trumpeter Christian scott, georgia Anne muldrow, Ahrel lumzy, Ben l’oncle soul and even Africana pro-fessor Dr. tricia rose. the A38 concert on may 21 will present the brand new Akua naru songs, but she will definitely play some older tunes as well. Don’t miss it!

albanian-born singer alba hyseni has been living in hungary for quite a while now and she has become an important part of the local music scene over the years. she’s at home in several different genres, be it jazz, electronica, rock, blues or even metal. On may 14, she is going to perform her album inner mission in an acoustic set. On this occasion, we had a little chat with her.

you’ve just obtained the hungarian citizenship. why did the process take so long?it took me 18 long years to obtain hungarian citizenship. the person resided in hungary continuously with no hungarian origin according to the hungarian law has to have an absolutely clean criminal and financial record, their livelihood and residence have to be 100% assured in hun-gary, their naturalization must not violate any interest of the state and they must provide the state with the proof that they have passed the examination in constitutional studies in hungarian language, and this exam is also about hungarian literature hungarian history. i’ve lived in this country for almost two decades as a non-citizen as i said. yet i’ve gotten my artistic reputation here, spoken hungarian, paid my taxes every year and now that the moment has finally come, the one thing i can safely say is that i really feel relief. some people have asked me what it means to be a hungarian Citizen to me, what’s different in my life now? i don’t think there’s any real way to convey the advantages of being a citizen without talking about what it’s like to live in hungary without having citizenship. i guess many of you people reading this probably don’t think too often about the fact that you are hungarian citizens. there are many words that i think sum up what citizenship means to a former non-citizen, but the ones i keep returning to are opportunity and freedom. What do i mean by these words? i came to hungary escaping ex-yugoslav war in 1997. so, the opportunity is having the option to travel wherever i wish to travel and to do my part of the job in order to shape both this country and the world. it is the chance to make a difference in this world, to take control, to take ownership of my own fate, and the fate of the place that i live in many possible ways. it is all about my self-determination in its purest form. i have freedom and the ability to leave hungary without having any fear of not being able to get back in my own country whenever i wish to do so. this also means being able to settle down here, to live here, to have a home here, without worrying that one day you’ll be asked to leave this place i’ve contributed so much to.

your second album also seems long to be made. what’s the reason for that?making music for my first album inner-mission ended up being a needed catharsis during the last few years for many people here and i really did put a lot of myself into that album. it was a true therapy for me. i very much enjoyed doing something absolutely different than any other woman in this country. the music on inner-mission felt like me, i sang and i lived. i also explored my past for the first time totally. When i initially got the album in my hands, i really didn’t know what was going to happen. oh boy, am i glad that hungarian media was willing and able to rate the album as one of the most unique pieces of art in past 20 years in almost three hundred different articles? i was. i was really overwhelmed. i think the end result is far better than i could ever imagine it to be. i love everything my producer Csigó tamás wrote and i think we complimented each other pretty well by releasing this album. so as for my second al-bum, Amor-fati, the really unique thing about it is that i got the idea and see the release of it in various ways. i’m totally happy with what i have for now and i don’t want to participate in the music business with a piece of crap, just because i have to release an album. in contrary, i want to lay out all the options for myself first, and the second solo album will not come out until it is as unique as inner-mission was/is. on the one hand, the changes in hungarian politics and music business were and are a terrible blow to arts in general, but on the other hand; i think i’m lucky in a lot of ways. the complete album idea is there, in my heart, growing at the edges of things. maybe this perfection will bloom into another year, in another country. it’s also a concept and i’m excited to try it out. do you have any plans to work abroad?i actually did go through a couple of countries in recent years and i saw various places. i’ve learned a number of things while doing it, and hopefully some of the things i’ve learned will help me in the future. i’m absolutely ready for an international tour and that tour starts in late July this year. Alba hyseni project will play shows in Kosovo, switzerland, Denmark,

Albania, etc. i also believe that strong will and my good intentions will only get me far and my plan is as bullet straight as possible. i look objectively at my own skills and i am capable of delivering all of them. truth be told, i am going to travel to the United states next autumn as while objectively evaluating myself for many years now, i know that i am certainly someone who has enough knowledge in many areas and i definitely want to release an album there. experience goes hand in hand with talent. i really want to be able to show that i have experience. i want to put anything i can out there, my goal is to impress those people too, and i won’t do that with puppy eyes alone. i am aware of course that every region has different approaches to the cultural and artistic issues, but i also know that my biggest advantage is me. the rest is in god’s hands.

since your debut came out, what new albums have been your favorite ones and will they have an effect on your second long-player?there is no “new” band that can catch my attention for a long time, not longer than 15 minutes, and i would not want to refer to any “new” bands this time, honestly. i am a sworn fanatic of music and its tradition, and “new” music does not affect that tradition in me at all. nowadays i listen to bands such as Depeche mode, Joy Division, the stranglers, talking heads, psychedelic furs, einstürzende neubauten, sonic youth, nine inch nails, pink floyd, early albums of psychic tV, etc. they’re moody bands but they have a great artistic attitude and very good lyrics of course. i listen to them for they are completely different kinds of bands, one be-ing more soulful, while the other being extremely artistically oriented. i think this will reflect well in the final stages of my next solo album. these bands are also a good distraction to me as their work is both elegant and artistically beautiful. i like to hear sounds of all sorts on their albums of course. i also like classical music, jazz, blues, and i also like the elements of gospel, punk and noise, as for me, tradition in music is all about a wonderful mix of sounds and as long as it can serve as a means to connect me to the same tradition through the evoking of emotions or the chanting of a true message, these bands and these genres will affect my life for a long, long time. these genres can also cut through the thick fog that sometimes shrouds my mind when i just need a moment of a true inspiration, especially clarity. they can make me sit in somber reverence to the meaning these genres are conveying through their tunes. these sounds can make me jump up and down and throw myself around my home, as i thump my feet and bob my head to a melody that comes from the pit of my stomach that also needs to be set free. i like to explore the odd, the quirky, and the weird and soon enough while listening to these genres, the odd becomes absolutely normal to me, the quirky becomes very interesting, and the weird becomes truly exciting.

do you have any special plans for the fifth birthday concert of the alba hyseni Project?i’m gonna pull that information to the audience directly from the stage on 15th of April, i’ll be calm until then about the names of the four respected guests who will play with Alba hyseni project in toldi Club that evening. this special event will be recorded by hungarian Duna tV.

the material of the exhibition presents the latest graphic works of the artist. the displayed graphic sheets show masses of people billowing, from rock concerts to protests.

the series that has been in the making for three years weaves the 21st century metropolitan mass motions and mass dynamics into visual markings. the artist started the preparation of the picture flow titled masses with background research into social sciences and the analysis of several works of art, reaching back to the beginning of the 20th century.

she has researched the processes systematically, where the experience of existing in a crowd can occur, she has watched the dynamics of masses in sports events, cultural events, on the every-day stages of urban life, family scenes, through the studying of the materials made about the social-gentilitial and religious-societal protests after the 2008 crisis to the peace marches embodying societal stability.

it has become her concept that she consciously refers to human social tissue as a converging power.

the form order is toned when the visual world of the 1910s and 1930s looks back, the shapes reflect on the futuristic art of the age of the great eco-nomic world crisis, as that period brought similar social problems to surface as the crises of our modern day. the tension stemming from the similar-ity of the two periods has drawn her attention more and more towards dynamics. At the same time, the work process has been constantly inspired by music. the musicality of the picture has become defining, which she visualizes with the most simple geometrical shapes: spheres and triangles.

“There is an analogy between my own working method of drawing and the topic that gives a frame to my work: the formation of masses. The drawing and the urban crowd are both ‘increasing structures.’ If the material in my hand increases and becomes a mass, then it is being shaped at the same time. Similarly, if a gathering starts to happen in an urban spot and if there are already many people present, they separate into smaller groups, and these smaller groups will later develop into further groups, bunches. After a while, focuses start to appear, and then, at a certain point of the process, the totality of the groups will form a segmented mass. Although the people within the crowd don’t see the form of the mass, they still feel and shape the dynamics of the mass. During drawing, I mainly concentrate on this intensity. In this work, the form and weight of the crowd is developed at the same time.”

liquid synth sounds, jazz-influenced arrangements, hip-hop, funk and folk: shigeto (aka Zach saginaw, who also produces music under the moniker Frank Omura) blends these elements together into a beautiful and somewhat futuristic mix. Before his second show on the a38 (taking place on may 16), we sat down for an interview with him. you’ve already played on the a38 four years ago, together with africa hitech – what kind of memories do you have about that performance?funny you should ask... Besides getting to meet and play with two huge inspirations, mark prichard and steve spacek, the next morning i boarded a small pilot plane to romania and the engine exploded during take off! i truly thought it was over. the woman sitting next to me was squeezing my hand. We ended up landing in a field by the airport and there were ambulances and fire trucks waiting for us. i’ll never, ever forget that. your stage name, shigeto is a nod to your Japanese ancestry and your album lineage was centered around your dedication to Japanese history and what your grandparents went through. what does that country mean to you?Japan and being Japanese is something that seems so close but so different. i used my middle name „shigeto” as a way to pay homage to my grandmother, i guess. show her that our history means something to me. i definitely consider myself American which is why having the name shigeto helps me feel linked to where i came from. you toured with school Of seven Bells for a bit more than a year as their drummer: how is playing drums in a band is different from when you hit the stage just as shigeto?Well, playing drums in a band put a lot more pressure on me. it wasn’t my own music so i was more concerned about playing it perfectly. When i’m on my own, i have a lot more freedom to go different places but i miss the interaction with others. in a lot of interviews you mention jazz artists like Bill evans or John coltrane as your earliest influences: how did they shape your sound and approach to music?it’s just what i grew up listening to and what makes me feel good. i can always go back to their music and have a sense of comfort. after jazz, what drew you towards electronic music and how did you end up at Ghostly international?i started producing electronic music almost by accident. i have tendonitus in my wrists and couldn’t play drums. i fell in love with being able to make

music all on my own as i’m sure a lot of us did when we experienced it for the first time. detroit gave birth to genres like techno or protopunk and was considered one of the most inspiring city back in the days: what’s going on in the city nowadays?A lot of the same in my opinion. you should visit and see. tell us a bit more about recording your latest album, no Better time than now with a more live- centered setup. what inspired this change?no point in staying the same. you’ve said about it, that it’s ”an electronic album mixed like a rock album” what did you mean by that?mixed more like a band. less compression. no side chaining. more traditional in a sense. you are also composing a film score for the documentary, street Fighting man. tell us a bit more about it, for example, in what way is it different to compose songs for a score than just writing your own songs?it was very difficult trying to fit someone else’s vision but very rewarding in the end. what are your five all -time Ghostly international favourite releases?1. Dabrye - one/three2. Audion - suck fish3. Various Artists - idol tryouts Vol. one4. tadd mullinix - Winking makes A face5. Dabrye - two/three you are part of dave douglas’s new quartet, alongside with mark Guiliana and Jonathan maron. how does it came?i got to play/meet Dave at a rBmA event in nyC. shortly after we kept in touch and Dave chatted with me about the idea. i was into it immediately. you mentioned on your web page that your next album is coming this year. could you share with us some insights? are you going to perform some of the new tracks?i have an ep coming out in July. i will be playing some new tracks. Budapest is the last station of your european tour. what can the audience expect? i’ll be tired and excited to play for you guys, expect me to sweat a lot.

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.
