Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

Highlights of the Round

Of the 18 matches played 6 teams recorded 1st up wins and would have enjoyed singing the AJAX song after the match following their victory.

The winning teams were:

U9 Stars by 80 points. U10 Jets by 82 points.

U12 Comets by 8 points.

U12 Jets by 6 points.

U15 Comets by 83 points.

U16’s by 99 points.

Highest Individual Goal-Kicker

This week’s “golden boot” goes to Daniel Maisner (U10 Jets) who slotted 7 majors.

Milestones

Mazel-Tov to the following boys who all registered personal milestones in Round 1.

Josh Duieb (U12 Jets) – 50 games.

Josh celebrated his milestone with his team winning by a goal.

Max Shapiro & Brody Velleman (U14’s) – 50 games. Unfortunately both Max & Brody could not celebrate their milestones with a victory, but I’m sure they were ecstatic to play 50 games.

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

Round 1 Team Results & Match Reports

U9 Comets: St.Kilda City U9 Black 6.11 (47) d Ajax 3.5 (23) Goals: Okun, H. Sheezel, Thurston Best: Graham, Pike, C Sheezel, H Sheezel, Spicer, Wrobel Match Report The Ajax Under 9 Comets, with fourteen first gamers, put in a solid effort against an older and stronger St. Kilda City team. It was a good start to the season with many players showing great promise and the team finishing strongly. U9 Jets: Waverly Park 6.10 (46) def Ajax 4.0 (24) Goals: Stein 3, Segman Best: Greenbeg, Schauder, Segman, Stein, Wasbutzki, Zielinkski Match Report Ajax Under 9 Jets had a great first match with a solid effort from all 24 players. Everyone contributed and the team kept on improving as the match progressed. Finished very strongly outscoring the opposition 18-1 in the final quarter. Great signs for Round 2. U9 Stars: Ajax 14.9 (93) d St Bedes 2.1 (13) Goals: Mooseek 3, Alter 2, A Birnbaum 2, Shuster 2, Black, Borowitz, Brooke, Guttmann, Rosham Best: Alter, A Birnbaum, Borowitz, Levin, Mooseek, Shuster Match Report Today was the start of many Ajax careers. In bright sunshine, the Ajax stars came out to play. Full of enthusiasm and team spirit, the stars got off to a flyer. Winning the ball out of the centre and pumping it long to our key forwards. The sharing of the ball was fantastic, with player’s handballing and kicking to their teammates in a better position. When we did not have the ball, Ajax picked up their man, and were full of running for the entire game. Every single player made a contribution to the result. The team followed the coaches instructions to the letter, and deserved to sing the song at the end of the game. Go Stars! U10 Comets: East Sandringham 5.8 (38) d Ajax 5.3 (33) Goals: Jacobs 2, Kavellero, Landau, Nissen Best: Briskin, Davis, Kavellero, Lindell, Mond, Nissen Match Report The Comets fought hard only to come up short by 5 points. We gave the opposition a handy early lead and battled to come close but could not close the large gap. There were contributors all over the ground but to compete against strong teams a more consistent effort will be required.

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

U10 Jets: Ajax 13.11 (89) d Mordialloc Braeside White 1.1 (7)

Goals: Maisner 7, Bardas, Efron, Kanat, Klooger, Rajch, Spark

Best: Bardas, Felbel, Maisner, Schwarz, Spark, Rudzki

Match Report

The first game of any season has the players, coaches and spectators wondering

what to expect. Today we got an outstanding display of teamwork and positive attitude from every

single one of our players. After what seemed to be a slow start, with 5 behinds being scored,

the goals soon came and by quarter time the boys had opened up a nice lead.

What Leigh and I were most proud of was the maintenance of the intensity and attitude throughout the whole game. Even in the 3rd quarter when the opposition restricted our scoring opportunities, the boys maintained their intensity and kept the forward pressure up.

All in all, a very pleasing first round - the boys can be rightfully proud of themselves.

Dan and Leigh

U11 Comets: St Pauls 6.7 (43) d Ajax 6.5 (41) Goals: E Cohen 2, King, Star, Taranto, Zuker Best: Brick, Cohen E, de Waal, Gold, Morris, Taranto Match Report It was a sunny day and the Under 11 Comets were excited about their first game for 2013. Seven new players were warmly welcomed to the team which played away against St Peter's. After a slow start and trailing by over three goals half way into the second quarter, the boys picked up their work rate and began a remarkable comeback. They were hard at the ball, focused and made great position upfield. The tackling was ferocious and most of the second half went goal for goal as St Peter's picked up their intensity. The ball movement was fast and skilful but unfortunately, the siren sounded, with Ajax 2 points behind, just as they opened the play through the wing with players streaming forward for what looked like a certain goal. A fantastic, entertaining game that was a pleasure to watch.

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

U11 Jets: Cheltenham 7.11(53) d Ajax 4.1 (25) Goals: Fibishenko, Grodski, Mondel, Sheezel Best: Faiman, Fibishenko, Lambert, Mitsel, Sheezel, Zukerman Match Report After a long wait between seasons and an interrupted lead-up, all of the boys were extremely excited for our round one game at home against Cheltenham. Unfortunately, a tough initiation for the Jets to Under 11 football. The team competed really well against a quality opposition, consistently putting their bodies on the line. All of the boys embraced the new tackling rules for Under 11 football, and often took on opponents who were often much bigger in size. Unfortunately, Cheltenham was too strong all over the ground and kicked away in the second half. We can’t wait for round 2. U12 Comets: Ajax 7.7 (49) def Murrumbeena 6.5 (41) Goals: Lipton 3, Krongold 2, Miller, Siegel Best: Krongold, Levine, Lipton, Bloom, Kessell, Zukerman) Match Report Great first up with for the boys (and coaching staff). Great team effort but also outstanding individual efforts that bear mentioning. Toby L I P T O N, taking on the entire Murrumbeena side, to slot not one but two goals from essentially the wing. Benji Krongold, solid as ever with some mighty tackles as well as 2 excellent goals. Hoody continues to improve with a solid performance at CHB, a position he has made is own, as well as a run in the ruck. Tagging role from today’s captain Maxy Bloom, essentially taking number 3 out of the game. Big improvements on last year from the following players Zuky, Kessell, Kotzman and Southwick. As well as all the usual suspects Harris, Siegel and Peker. Well done boys. U12 Jets: Ajax 4.5 (29) def Waverley Park 3.5 (23) Goals: Cowan, Jacobs, Pincus, Rosenbaum Best: Altman, Duieb, Goldberg, Herzog, Jacobs, Pincus) Match Report Brilliant first up performance by the boys. Josh Duieb celebrated 50th game in style – ably supported by the rest of the team. Special mention to newcomers Ariel, Akiva and Natan.

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

U12 Stars: East Malvern Red 17.15 (117) d Ajax 0.0 (0) Goals: Nil. Best: Grunfeld, Kalb, Lang, Machlin, Micmacher, Pacanowski Match Report A Sunday morning that starts at 7.45am was bound to be a challenge for the boys (and a few fathers), having recently come off Pesach, and it seems the Matzoh Balls had not yet passed through all their systems. The opposition clearly had time for their Weetbix this morning. They jumped to a commanding position at the end of the 1st quarter at 3.4.22 and made it hard for our boys to catch up. In trying conditions that some said were better suited to a cricket game than footy, our boys held the final margin down to only 117 points. Lang announced his arrival in the 1st quarter, and received special mention from coach Shenker at the 1st qtr break for his performance. Machlin as usual was a standout in the pack, always working hard to get the ball for his team. Jackson Kalb showed great courage and determination throughout, but special mention must be made of his effort in the 3rd qtr, successfully taking his man down after a chase that seemed to go on forever – pure inspiration. Grunfeld showed us that he’s back this season, with some awesome tackling, laying his body on the line every time he goes in for the ball. Special welcome to the new boys on the team, Niv Lang and Kai Yaffe. Special thanks to Max Rosenberg who came up from the U11’s to help us today. Finally, this was the match we had to have – it only gets better from here, with the team determined to show their coaches they can do better, harder, faster. U13 Jets: East Malvern Blue 16.9 (105) d Ajax 2.3 (15) Goals: Gross, Briggs Best: Aisen, Braverman, Briggs, Klooger, New, Rubenstein Sturgess Match Report None submitted U13 Comets: Prahran Red 6.7 (43) d Ajax 6.6 (42) Goals: Hendel 2, Antman, LaSala, Michelson, Ossip Best: Antman, Hendel, Hymans, Ossip, Webb, Zielinski Match Report None submitted

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

U14 Comets: East Malvern 24.12 (156) d Ajax 2.6 (18) Goals: Berlinski, Beaconsfield Best: J.Bassat, Berlinski, Rosham, Shapiro, Velleman, Zuckerman Match Report A tough day against quality opposition. I think our boys were given a lesson on how big the step up is to division 1 facing the reigning premiers in round 1. Body size, fitness, skill and strength were all telling factors today. We tried hard but were simply out classed. U15 Girls (Jackettes): St Peters 26.7 (163) d Ajax 0.0 (0) Goals: Nil Best: Altman, Friedman, Rose, Roth, Silver, Zivin Coaches Report After a successful season last year we finally built a girls team to represent the AJAX football club in 2013. With only a brief lead up of pre season training the girls were very excited to get on the oval today and play their first game. Unfortunately we faced last years under 14 premiership team, however our girls gave their best for the entire game. Every player on the team got a touch of the ball and the girls got to see the difference between the under 12 and under 15 competition with the introduction of tackling. I am very impressed with our girls (who were playing a superior team with much more experience), that they never gave up. We will only grow from here. Well done to Zali, Alicia, Melissa and Mia who all played their first game for the club. Thanks to all the parents for their support and encouragement for the girls today. Coach - Braham Team Managers Report Today the Jackettes took to the field in the U15’s girls competition. The morning commenced with Coach Braham Morris & Asst Coach Danielle Shmerling welcoming the team and the new girls and their parents to the Jackettes, namely Zali Altman (Darren & Nat), Mia Borowitz (Savannah & Daniel), Melisa Guoga (Vita) & Alicia Wise (Paul). A welcome was also extended to the girls who played last year namely Cheryl Cherry, Romy Fanarof, Cassie Friedman, Ieva Guoga, Amanda Morris, Miffany Rose, Maddy Roth, Morgan Rothschild, Bianca Silver & Jessica Zivin (and their parents). Once the introductions were over the team was issued with their “Jackas” jumper and after trying them all on and ensuring they were the right size the girls all lined up for a team photo. It was interesting to note these days no one seems to own a digital camera as all the photos taken by the parents were done on i-phones/smart phones. After all snaps were taken coach Braham Morris & Asst Coach Danielle Shmerling explained the team positions to the team & read out the positions. Captain for the day was Amanda Morris who then led the Jackettes onto Oval 4 as they were the 1st match scheduled for the day. The 1st quarter saw several good passages of play take place and at the ¼ time break the scores were Jackettes 0.0.0 to 6.4.40. The 2nd quarter saw the Jackettes run and carry the ball but couldn’t penetrate the defence of St Peters.

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

U15 Girls (Jackettes) continued The ½ time bell rang with the score being Jackettes 0.0.0 to 13.4.82. As the girls have a 10 minute ½ time break, the 1st 5 minutes saw the girls thoroughly enjoy the big bowl of oranges the Altman family supplied. Darren must have picked up some lovely sweet ones and Nat would have spent a good few hours cutting them up. This was warmly appreciated by the Jackettes as they were all gone after 5 minutes. The Team Manager never got to eat any this week!!!. The 2nd half of the match saw the Jackettes attack the ball with fierce determination and had lots of excellent passages of play, good smothers, good tackles and showed desperation for the ball. (must have been something in the oranges!!!). Although they failed to score during the match, the Jackettes fought the game out to the very end. The girls were up against a bigger and stronger opposition team today that played in the U14 competition last season. Final scores were Jackettes 0.0.0 to St Peters 26.7.163. My thanks go out to the parents rostered on duty today being the Altman family (for the oranges), Umpires Escort (Vita Guoga), Goal Umpire (Michael Rothschild), Timekeeper (Saul Fanarof), Boundary Umpire (Yardena Solomon), Runner (Mark Silver), Trainer (Paul Wise), and Water Person (Brendan Cherry). Also thanks to Braham & Danielle and to the parents and grandparents who were at the match supporting the Jackettes. David Zivin U15 Jets: Murrumbeena Gold 12.12 (84) d Ajax 12.6 (78) Goals: Carp 3, J.Cohen 2, Takac 2, Benge, R.Cohen, Katz, Krakauer, Sandler Best: Carp, R.Cohen, Krakauer, Nissenbaum, Sandler, Wise Match Report None submitted U15 Comets: Ajax 19.10 (124) d St Bedes/Mentone Tigers 6.5 (41) Goals: Klooger 6, New 4, Belnick 3, Cohen 3, Faraday 2, Hellinger Best: Belnick, Cohen, Klooger, Lebowitz, New, Tovel) A fantastic start by the U15 Comets. The boys showed a lot of heart, muscle and great team structure for a well deserved win. U16: Ajax 15.21 (111) d Mt Waverley 2.0 (12) Goals: Teleshevshy 5, Lipton 4, Mastellone 2. Michelson 2, Janover-Rocha, New Best: Holloway. Kalmus, Levy, Lipton, Michelson, Teleshevsky Match Report None submitted

U17: St Peter 12.13 (85) d Ajax 8.11 (59) Goals: Havin 2, Shapiro 2, Bracler, Klein, Paltiel, Velleman Best: Herszberg, Velleman, Marom, Breckler, Klein, Paltiel Match Report The first game was always going to be tough, new players, new coach and with limited training. Apart from a few minutes of lost concentration, the boys showed courage and skills to within stand the pressure and create their own. Looking forward to training and Round 2.

As a reminder the CLUB SONG should be SUNG IN THE ROOMS AFTER THE GAME AND NOT OUT ON THE GROUND.

SEASON 2013 AJAX WEEKLY WRAP , ROUND 1

AJAX FC Club Sponsor

AJAX Blitzes Fitzroy, Under19’s big win. AJAX has kicked off its 2013 campaign in sensational fashion with an 18.20 (128) to 4.11 (35) win over Fitzroy at Gary Smorgon Oval on the weekend. AJAX came up against former Sydney premiership player, Luke Ablett, but the Jackas were eager to play well for Ari Lewski in his 100th

game. It was an impressive performance from the Jackas, winning every quarter despite a strong wind favoring one end. AJAX’s midfield was superb all day. Star midfielder Ezra Poyas kicked five goals and Eugene Routman carried the ball with speed, while Ari Lewski, Josh Ludski and Gary Blieden won plenty of contested possessions. The key forwards capitalized on the midfield’s work, with David Fayman kicking four goals, Jake Lew three goals and Richie Simon with two. Routman and Poyas both kicked unbelievable goals in the second term and the home side went into half time having only conceding one goal. However, Fitzroy fought back early in the third quarter, booting three of the next four goals. Ablett asserted his influence on the game but AJAX took their opportunities going forward and managed 4.1 (25) for the quarter. The Jackas responded to coach Leigh McQuillen’s pointed message at three quarter time, putting on more blocks and defensive pressure in the fourth quarter to finish with a 93-point victory. McQuillen was pleased that every player played their role, including Jason Ritterman and Luke Peters in defence. The Reserves fielded a strong side and were beating Fitzroy by five points at three-quarter time but ended up going down by ten points. Nadav Harel and Matthew Nissen were classy in the middle while Jesse Kochen, Sam Bruce and Josh Gottlieb showed their experience in the backline. It was a disappointing fourth quarter but the Reserves will look to rebound next week with a home game against Werribee Districts. Match report by Joel Benjamin

Edition 2 Weekly Wrap 2013 – Round 1

AJAX Thirds played Fitzroy in the first of their Sunday games allowing many of our religious youth an opportunity to play competitive football. But they came up against a fitter and stronger Fitzroy team and AJAX failed to block and tackle as coach Barry Simon wanted. The Jackas did lift in the second half but the result was really never in doubt.

Under 19’s

Against an unknown opposition players were asked to set the scene for the rest of the season. AJAX was able to grind out a tight first quarter that asked the players to put their bodies on the line (one contest resulted in Daniel Cohen being sent to hospital to receive stitches to his face) and work in numbers against taller

opposition. However, as a result of tireless work from our talls (Goody, Keddie and Orren) we were able to wrestle the ascendancy in the game and if it wasn’t for some inaccurate kicking would have gone in with a larger half time lead.

In the third quarter Dylan

Rothchild and JR were able to increase their run across the half back line and assisted Adam Lerner, Dean Rotenberg and Nick Lewis to pin point the footy to our forwards. Of great significance was the spread with AJAX having 13 goal kickers throughout the game.

The boys were able to put out a solid 4 qtr effort and show that they will be a force to be reckoned with this year. - Adam Sacks Coach
