Abiotic/ Biotic
Abiotic
• Non living factors in an ecosystem, that an organism depends on.
Air• Atmosphere – contains Nitrogen 78%
Oxygen 21% • CO2 O2 in photosynthesis
Water• Most organisms are 80% water• Greater diversity with more water
Soil• Mixture of sand, silt, clay, and organic
substance – source of nutrients• Has many layers and may contain living
things in it.
Sunlight• Life requires energy – common source is
the sun• Sunlight determines season change
Temperature• 0- 50°C – most desirable temperature• Temperature depends on elevation and
latitude
Climate• Weather over time• Allows living things a consistent and
predictable environment.
Biotic
• The living or once living things in an ecosystem.
Dead Things
• Bones, Sticks, Leaves, Grass, Etc.
Living thing cause:
• Disease
• Predation - Food
• Protection
Ecology Notes
Biosphere• entire portion of the
earth that is inhabited by life.
Ecology
• Study of interactions that occur among organisms and their environment.
Eco – Homes
Ology – Study of
Ecosystem• Interaction of
living things with their non – living environment.
• An organism’s home or shelter.
1.Individual - One single organism of a species
2. Population- All the organisms of a species in a specific area
3. Community - All the populations in a specific area
4. Ecosystem- All the living and non living things in an area
5. Biomes - major types of communities and ecosystems that
are typical of broad geographic regions
6. Biosphere- Sphere of earth that comprises of all living things
Example
Food Web – interconnection of plants and animals
Food Chain – follow a single path
Autotrophs - make their own food (plants)
Heterotrophs – can’t make their own food (animals)
Producer – food source ( Plants, Bacteria)
Consumer – Eats producers or consumers ( dog, grasshopper, humans)
Decomposers – Breaks down consumers and producers ( Maggots, Mushrooms, Vultures)
Herbivore – Eats plants only (deer, cow)
Carnivore – Eats animals only (lion)
Omnivore – Eats Plants and Animals (bear, humans, birds)
